nearby excursions Field of Dreams

While there’s lots to see and do right here in the Cedar Valley, a nice variety of attractions are also located nearby… Heart of the Saints Highway 27 from St. Louis to St. Paul is known as the Avenue of the Saints. A section of this highway goes through several cities in Iowa that call themselves the Heart of the Saints. These cities include Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, the Amana Colonies, Iowa City and Coralville. Each community has a wide variety of attractions and venues which provide activities for everyone. You’ll find sporting events and golf courses; great restaurants; museums highlighting the heritage of the people who made Iowa their home; visual and performing arts and great shopping in local shops and great settings. You’ll find all of this within a short drive from the Cedar Valley. Agricultural Heritage Northeast Iowa offers a wide and wonderful variety of attractions showcasing the agricultural heritage of our area. Just south of the Cedar Valley via Highway 218, in La Porte City, you will find the FFA Historical & Ag Museum. East of the Cedar Valley, just off Highway 20 in Independence, you will find the Heartland Acres Agribition Center which takes “you on an educational journey of the past, present and future of agriculture in the Heartland.” North of Independence is

45 www.cedarfallstourism.org

the small town of Hazleton where you may pick up a map showing the many shops and farms of the Amish community that has built itself in this area. Just to the south of Waterloo in Hudson you will find Heritage Farm, which is home to the large Percheron horses and a trip back to farms of the past, as well as Hansen’s Dairy Farm where you can milk a cow, make butter and see wallabies, all while the Hansen family runs a commercial farm operation. Frank Lloyd Wright Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright have two wonderful opportunities to see his work by traveling just a short distance from the Cedar Valley. Cedar Rock, which is located just off Highway 20 to the east of Waterloo, is the Walter House. This home is an example of one of Wright’s most complete designs. Nearly everything in the house bears his imprint. The Stockman House located in Mason City, less than 90 minutes to the north on Highway 218, was the first Iowa building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Stockman House is decorated and furnished similar to the way it was when it was built in 1908 and showcases Wright’s impression of a modest house of that time. The Barn Quilts of Grundy County The Barn Quilts of Grundy County is a public art project designed to highlight the

visitors guide 2010

agricultural heritage of Grundy County and the folk art of quilting. Many of the towns in the county, including Grundy Center, have gift shops and art studios for visitors to explore. Additional Sites to Visit Nashua is home to the Little Brown Church in the Vale where thousands have been married and return every summer for a reunion picnic and vow renewal ceremony. The church is over 150 years old and was made famous by the song “The Church in the Wildwood” by William Pitt. Located north of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, it is just three miles off the Avenue of the Saints. The movie “Field of Dreams” was filmed just an hour to the east of the Cedar Valley in Dyersville. The movie site still exists surrounded by family farms and the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa. There are no formal activities that take place on the site, so visitors can bring their bats and gloves and have a catch, just as Kevin Costner did on the same field. Dyersville is also home to the National Farm Toy Museum and the Basilica of St. Xavier, which is one of only 52 basilicas in the United States. Dyersville is a short drive away from the Cedar Valley on Highway 20. Call our offices for additional ideas or itineraries.

where your story begins

aul and Lisa’s love story began in downtown Waterloo. Paul received a text message from his buddies to meet at “4 East Downtown Waterloo.” That night, Lisa’s friends invited her to Screaming Eagle American Bar & Grill, where they could celebrate the new job Lisa landed through City & National Employment. Paul and Lisa met, laughed and joked together and Lisa agreed to go with Paul to the Bourre Lounge on Saturday night. Shopping with her best friend at Classic Kitchen & Bath, Lisa couldn’t stop talking about this great new guy she’d met. She told her friend about how Paul took her to the Waterloo Center for the Arts where they got better acquainted while viewing and discussing Haitian artwork and other exhibits. They were impressed by the new Phelps Youth Pavilion and development taking place in downtown Waterloo, including the newly renovated buildings and businesses like The Samuels Group, who works with downtown leaders to develop properties and construct green-friendly environments. After many dates — and a few heated discussions — Paul knew Lisa was the right woman for him. While

picking out new office furniture at Techline, he told an office buddy he was going to propose marriage. He would get the ring at Roth Jewelers. Paul made dinner reservations at CU Restaurant and popped the question before he got cold feet. Lisa said yes. She could hardly wait to tell her best friend as they had their nails done at College of Hair Design. An excited Lisa and her best friend started dress shopping at The Bride’s Corner that very day. The happy couple invited their parents to dinner at Roux Orleans, the perfect place for everyone to get to know each other. The next day, Lisa and her mother shopped for rehearsal dinner outfits at Oh So In Boutique and made appointments at Beau Monde Boutique & Salon for their pre-wedding hair, manicures and pedicures. As Lisa and Paul planned their big event, they stopped at Main Street Waterloo and Silos and Smokestacks. They wanted to include a list of events happening in downtown Waterloo in their wedding invitations. The big day finally arrived. Their wedding and reception went off without a hitch at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center, and now they’re living happily ever after. l
