NewAldaya Lifescapes builds on promise By ANNIE VANDER WERFF For the Courier

CEDAR FALLS — NewAldaya Lifescapes, corporately known as the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, opened on July 5. On that day, says executive director Millisa Tierney, “there must have been a rainbow arched directly over NewAldaya Lifescapes. The promise we made to our residents and community has now become a shining reality.” Main Street, a 14,000-square-foot Lifestyles Center, has excited residents. Freda Lovejoy, a longtime resident, says it is “exactly what we needed.” The center adds a social element to residents’ lives, offering a cafe, pub, salon and spa, performing arts center, general store, wellness center and more. It’s a place where friends meet, new acquaintances are made and old

friendships are renewed. “Several people have commented on how nice it is to ‘get away’ on Main Street. You should see how their faces light up, It’s just such a nice, pleasant atmosphere,” said Lovejoy. The new facility shows attention to detail, including architectural details and design work and high, vaulted ceilings painted like the sky. With the face of aging changing by the day, Tierney says, “we have to create an environment that says, ‘You’ll live better,’ and it does. We can’t thank our donors, contractors, subcontractors and partners enough. The dynamic team that Peters Construction produced with Levi Architecture and Paint Out Loud’s Kathy Cessna was amazing.” RICK CHASE / Courier Staff Photographer

The Thuesens were among board of directions, said, “The Main Street building project the first to move into the twocompletes the series of a threephase ‘Community Under One Roof’ building concept set forth by the NewAldaya Lifescapes’ board of directors.” The initial phase in the series was accomplished in 2007, when 18 new Glen Arbor Independent Living and 42 Bryhl Assisted Living Apartments were opened. The second phase removed an age old structure that served for many years as the organization’s front door. As a result of changing codes and regulations, the building had to be demolished. In the third and final phase, Main Street replaced the original structure with a new front door. Elva Thuesen is pleased to see the Main Street become a reality. Staff the reason residents ‘live better’ at NewAldaya By NANCY JUSTIS Reprinted from The Courier

CEDAR FALLS — It has been said it takes a village to raise a child. It also can be said it takes a village to care for others in need. The staff and residents at NewAldaya Lifescapes, formerly Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, take the village and family theme to heart, as evidenced in the name change. NewAldaya is a madeup word based on the Latin word “aldaya,” which means village. “Lifescapes” is a buzz word in the senior living industry that better explains the full-service options offered within the organization. “I believe people really do ‘live better’ at NewAldaya and it’s because we have such a great staff,” said Annie VanderWerff, NewAldaya’s director of fund development for the past four years. “As a retirement community, we work with real people living real lives. NewAldaya management recognizes the needs of its staff as well as of its residents. “As a mom, it is great to have the flexibility to be there for my children for concerts and important milestones,” Mentel said. “Professionally, I have the freedom

‘New normal’ features options on Main Street For the Courier

CEDAR FALLS — Pushing forward with change, NewAldaya Lifescape understands that the face of aging is evolving. These changes revolve around the new concept described as the “new normal,” which is defined as doing more with less. Times change, desires are different, lifestyles have changed and expectations are higher. People want options, choices and no limitations. At NewAldaya, we are constantly in a preparatory state for addressing the “new normal.” “People want to age well and in an active fashion,” says Millisa Tierney, executive director. “They want to be engaged, social, intellectually stimulated and purposeful. They no longer will accept the limitations of the past.” She says society views aging differently in terms of expectations. “We don’t see limits now when we age, we see opportunities.” At NewAldaya Lifescapes, the Main Street has been identified as “trailblazing a new way” The New Day Salon and Spa. in response to the desires of the “new normal.” Main Street is the physical structure that gives people the opportunity to engage in — and experience — life as if they were living in any city in America. It breaks down the walls of isolation and designation of categories society once suggested individuals should live in, according to the organization. Main Street provides people with as much interaction, diversity and cultural experience as they desire. It also affords individuals the opportunity to continue to feel like contributing members of society through opportunities such as volunteerism. Wellness Center helps residents, staff stay fit By ANNIE VANDER WERFF For the Courier

CEDAR FALLS — The concept of wellness can represent different thoughts, actions and ideas. Wellness can be defined as eating right and regularly exercising. It can mean maintaining work-life balance and limiting stress, or defined as maintaining a certain level of independence and quality of life. At NewAldaya, we strive to help our resident and staff populations achieve their personal definition of wellness. The NewAldaya Wellness Center offers a variety of health education and wellness programming opportunities for all ages and fitness levels. For example, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, you’ll find a group of NewAldaya’s Independent Living Residents attending a progressive resistance training class focused on maintaining and improving participants’ range of motion, strength and balance. “I can feel a huge difference since I first started attending the class a few months ago,” says one NewAldaya resident. “I had taken a pretty nasty fall about three years ago and had been sitting ever since. I lost a lot of strength and a great deal of flexibility. Now I am regaining strength and even feel confident enough to walk around without my walker, thanks to Lindsay and the class, I am feeling like myself again.” Wolf gives most of the credit to the residents. “They keep me motivated. I hope to be moving as well and doing as much as they are when I am their age. They are great role models and speak volumes about the benefits of exercise throughout the aging process. As they say, ‘use it or lose it.’” Other residents like the group exercise setting because of its social benefits. Many take advantage of the class, then head to the NewAldaya Main Street River Rock Cafe for coffee. The facility and programs also are available to staff. “First and foremost, we are here to care for and serve our resident population, giving them the best care and highest quality of life possible, but we also recognize that we need a healthy staff in order to do that,” says Millisa Tierney, NewAldaya Lifescapes executive director. Fitness classes, biometric screenings and wellness seminars are just a few of the offerings available to staff members. “I like the fitness classes because they are convenient, right after work, and I have really learned a lot about how to make healthy changes in my life,” says Gabriele Barker, a NewAldaya employee and wellness program participant. Eventually, NewAldaya plans to offer wellness programming opportunities to family and community members. For more information, call Wolf at 553-2261.
