FIRST PLACE: OPTICAL For the second straight year, Cedar Valley Eye Care has been named as the voters’ clear choice for optical services in the Cedar Valley in the 2016 Best of the Best annual survey. It is an achievement the staff is excited to celebrate. “When we heard that we were named ‘Best of the Best,’ we were so honored and humbled to learn that our customers wanted to support us like that,” said Gina Allison, optical manager with Cedar Valley Eye Care. “I just can’t thank our customers enough for taking the time to vote for us.” Allison said her staff of six opticians has always been dedicated to providing outstanding customer service, which this honor truly reflects. “Our opticians have more than 150 years of combined experience. Customers tell us that they appreciate the extra effort that we put forth. They like how we take the time to actually listen to them … to better understand what they want, and how we help them find the perfect eyewear that fits their personalities.” The opticians at Cedar Valley Eye Care

We can narrow things down and help find the looks that they’ll love. From chic Italian luxury brands like Bottega Veneta to the cutting-edge styles from the Stella McCa-
rtney Collection, our customers can truly express themselves.” With fall right around the corner, customers can also stop in to experience the new Ray-Ban colors, which are here just in time for back to school. Along with the exclusive lines that cannot be found anywhere else in the Cedar Valley, Cedar Valley Eye Care offers the most technologically advanced digital lenses, from progressives to single vision. These premium products are of the highest quality, providing sharper optics as well as a wider reading area; think watching high-definition, as opposed to analog TV! Teamwork is a primary key to the success of the opticians at Cedar Valley Eye Care. “Our opticians truly do work together as a team, helping each other to better serve all of our customers,” said Allison. “At the end of the day, it’s not just about making the sale, it’s about creating relationships. Our customers put their trust in us — it’s something that we never take lightly. Our customized approach reinforces to our
customers that they get the best eyewear and vision solutions for their individual needs.” Over the years, Cedar Valley Eye Care has expanded to better serve customers throughout the community. In addition to the Waterloo location on San Marnan Drive next to Red Lobster, the Cedar Falls location is a state-of-the-art facility on First Street. “Our customer base in Cedar Falls continues to grow, and our expansion into that market has been a success,” Allison said. “Now, it’s more convenient than ever for residents on the west side of the Cedar Valley to get access to all of our physicians, specialists and opticians.”

Oakridge Realtors FIRST PLACE: REALTY FIRM; REALTOR — DAN BERREGAARD HONORABLE MENTION: REALTOR — CARL ERICSON Now in its 35th year, Oakridge Realtors is the Cedar Valley’s largest real estate brokerage. Owners Dan Berregaard, Brian Page, Ann Lyons and Carl Ericson are proudly continuing a tradition of excellence that has earned them The Courier’s 2016 Best of the Best designation. Oakridge leadership attributes the company’s success to their 55 dedicated and highly trained agents. Oakridge associates participate in rigorous ongoing professional development programs to ensure that their clients benefit from working with the area’s most knowledgeable agents. This is why more homes are sold by Oakridge Realtors professionals than any other real estate company in the Cedar Valley, according to 2015 statistics from the Northeast Iowa Board of Realtors. they serve. “The Pink Ribbon Run, Boys and Girls Club, Sartori Festival of Trees, Habitat for Humanity, GBPAC’s Beers to You, Cedar Falls Community Theatre, Hartman Reserve, College Hill Arts Festival, Cedar Valley Hospice, Love INC, the
Oakridge Easter Egg Hunt and The United Way are all organizations and events where our agents are giving back to their communities,” said Lyons. “We are especially excited to be a presenting sponsor for the Pink Ribbon Run again this year.” “These are also examples of where we direct our corporate sponsorships and contributions. While we understand the importance of investing in our agents we also recognize the value of investing in our communities,” added Berregaard. An area of interest to both home sellers and buyers is the technology changes that have impacted the ways in which residential real estate is marketed. Ericson and Page direct the deployment of technology at Oakridge. “Social media platforms such as Face-
book and Twitter, and an upgraded interactive website are all tools that Oakridge agents utilize to facilitate making the buyer-seller connection,” Page said. Ericson adds, “A strong online presence is essential in today’s real estate market.” As Courier Communications’ Best of the Best real estate firm for the ninth consecutive year, Oakridge Realtors has made their case: In the Cedar Valley, we “Trust the Leader!”

Bill Colwell Ford
FIRST PLACE: AUTO DEALERSHIP HONORABLE MENTION: AUTO SERVICE, BRAKE SERVICE Bill Colwell Ford has been serving the Cedar Valley and the surrounding areas for the past 32 years. Located in Hudson, they want to thank all their loyal customers for voting Bill Colwell Ford the Cedar Valley’s No. 1 overall dealership to do business with. Their goal is to make the buying process and ownership experience simple, stress-free and non-confrontational for each of their customers. The reward is their customers’ loyalty. The dealership is family-owned and operated with Bill Colwell, owner, and his son, Blake Colwell, general manager. The automotive industry runs deep in the Colwell bloodline starting when Bill Colwell Sr. opened his first used car store in Mt. Morris, Ill., in 1960. The Colwell family eventually moved to the Cedar Valley where Bill Colwell Sr. and Bill Colwell Jr. established Bill Colwell’s Auto Mart in Waterloo in 1975. In 1984, Bill Colwell Jr. bought the Ford franchise from Keith Motor Company and opened Bill Colwell Ford. In the past 32 years the corner of Highway 63 and Waterloo Road in Hudson has changed quite a bit. Bill knew at some point he would need to expand the business to accommodate its growth. When the building and land directly behind them became available, Bill saw an opportunity and purchased what had previously been Kerry Ingredients. In 2012, the renovation process began. A new, spacious showroom was added to the front of the old building allowing for more desks for sales staff and showroom floor to showcase more vehicles. The previous building was converted into office space, a comfortable service lounge and a state-of-the-art service department. Once the new building was completed in July 2013, the process of removing the previous dealership, which had been there since 1960, began. Finally, in October 2013, the journey came to an end and the grand re-opening of Bill Colwell Ford was held. More recently, to accommodate the needs of their customers, Bill Colwell Ford expanded again and opened the Cedar Valley Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center in July. The Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center provides a full range of services including oil changes and essential maintenance, tires, alignments, brakes and more for all makes and models. The

Blake and Bill Colwell Bill Colwell Ford believes it is important to keep evolving as a company and stay up to date with their customers’ needs, but even with all the changes over the past 32 years there are a few things that have remained constant. In an age where people switch jobs or careers every couple of years, Bill Colwell Ford has four employees who have been there the entire 32 years they’ve been in business. These employees include Bill, Kurt Kienitz, assistant service manager; Joel Peterson and Kim Johnson, both automotive technicians. And there are countless other employees who have been there 20-plus years. “I believe one of the main reasons Bill 238 Waterloo Road, Hudson Colwell Ford has been successful all (319) 988-4153 these years is because Bill treats Toll-Free (800) 300-6950 his customers and employees Showroom hours: with respect and fairness. by WorkplaceDynamics, LLC, a leading research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement. Several aspects of workplace culture were measured, including alignment, execution and connection, just to name a few. “This has been a big year for Bill Colwell Ford. We opened the Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center, were named the Best of Best in the Cedar Valley by our customers and were named a Top 150 Workplace by our employees. It’s really been a humbling and proud moment to know that our customers and our employees really appreciate everything we do,” said Bill Colwell. In addition to the daily business and the growth of the past year, the dealership finds time to give back to the community. Earlier this week Bill Colwell Ford recently held its eighth annual Drive 4 UR School event for the Hudson Athletic Booster Club. To date, the event has raised $50,000 for the organization, and that number keeps growing. The Booster Club uses that money for uniforms and equipment replacement for students. Bill Colwell Ford has also worked with other organizations including Cedar Valley Hospice, March of Dimes, Give 2 the Troops, Beyond Pink TEAM and most recently the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. They were able to surpass their goal of 300 items by collecting a total of 548 items to be donated to the food bank. Those 548 items totaled to be more than 654 pounds, which is the equivalent of 545 meals. “Being able to give back to the community where we live and work has given us a chance to earn their business; that’s what keeps up going. The Cedar Valley is a great community and we’re happy to give back and fortunate to be a part of it,” said Bill Colwell. If you are in the market for a new, preowned or Certified Pre-Owned vehicle feel free to give Bill Colwell Ford a call or visit their new website www.billcolwellford. com, which has thousands of pictures and information on their inventory. If you’re not in the market for a new vehicle, they also have an outstanding service department and brand new Quick Lane facility to help maintain your current vehicle. Of course, you can always stop by the dealership to get assistance with any automotive need, or just to say hi and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Prestige Quality Dry Cleaning will be celebrate its 19th year in business Oct. 2 and is excited to be a part of the 2016 Best of the Best! Prestige believes it has earned the spot due to excellent customer service and top-notch clothing care. We at Prestige recognize that we don’t just clean clothes for our clients. We are eliminating a chore by saving our customers time, making it fast and easy for them to look their best and most professional. In addition, we care for our clients’ clothing – which is very personal. A favorite shirt or the pair of pants that fit you better than any you’ve ever had is many times not replaceable, or at a minimum, hard to replace. Dry cleaning your favorites helps to keep those garments looking new and wearable for as long as possible. Prestige also is the only computerized dry cleaner in the area, electronically
tracking each item of clothing brought into its stores. Clients are given a receipt for clothing brought in. This aids in eliminating the potential for loss. No one else can say that! Fun fact: Prestige has a small tie to Tinsel Town — the 2015 Season 19 “Bachelor” is a great client and has been for years.

Cedar Valley Hospice was started in 1979 by volunteer members of the community who saw a need for compassionate, dignified, end-of-life care. It is the original hospice in the Cedar Valley and has been the area’s leader consistently delivering on its core values: compassion, respect, integrity, education, leadership, relationships, quality and excellence. Led by a volunteer Board of Directors, the not-for-profit organization’s 110 employees and over 400 volunteers primarily provide services to those with a terminal illness or with a prognosis of six-months or less to live. Ultimately, the goal is to allow patients to stay in their own homes surrounded by loved ones and supported by an interdisciplinary team of professionals. The area’s only Hospice Home is also available to its patients for short-term stays to manage pain or for respite and residential care. In 2015, 906 hospice patients were cared for plus hundreds more through its community grief support, palliative care and HIV/AIDS case management programs.

HONORABLE MENTION — FURNITURE STORE Locally operated and family owned by Jerry and Martha Muller for more than 35 years, there is no secret why Jerry’s Furniture received 2016 Best of the Best honors. For the Mullers, good service and quality products are business as usual at Jerry’s Furniture. “The same name, same values, same place, same quality, same great selection … not a whole lot changes around here,” Jerry said. On-time delivery, great prices and the expertise that comes with nearly four decades of experience are what sets the furniture store apart from their competition.
Jerry’s Furniture Owners: Jerry and Martha Muller 1209 Flammang Drive, Waterloo (319) 234-7283 www.jerrysfurniture.net
Jerry’s Furniture carries top-quality brands like AAmerican, England, Hooker Furniture, Ashley, Vaughan-Bassett, Peter-Revington, Liberty and Englander. “We have a great team that puts the customer first at every level of the furniture buying experience,” Jerry said.
Owners Brad and Dana Smith say taking care of their clients is paramount. “We feel strongly that our success is based solely on how much we care. We want our clients to have a great experience from start to finish. Whether we’re picking up, cleaning and dropping off a fine rug, cleaning their carpet, tile and upholstery in-home or drying out their wet basement, we want the experience to be one they go away from feeling like an outstanding job was just done by a new friend. “I love that I’ve gained a number of friends as a result of this business. As a matter of fact, one of my best friends today started out as a client just a few short years ago. I love that I can see people on the street and am able to connect with
them on a deeper level. It’s sort of a goal of mine.” Another one of his goals is to bring consumer awareness and education to the public. Their philosophy is simple: educated homeowners make better decisions. This is one of the driving factors in the Smiths establishing a free, recorded message that anyone can listen to at any time on their website, www.mrcarpet.net. The Smiths would like to thank everyone who voted for Mr. Carpet again this year.

Morg’s Diner
Lighthouse Travel FIRST PLACE: TRAVEL AGENT
FIRST PLACE: BREAKFAST Around town, it’s well known that Morg’s Diner’s home-cooked meals fill the belly and warm the soul. “I think we are one of the most diverse restaurants in Waterloo. We get everybody and anybody,” said Sam Ludwig, a former waitress turned co-owner at Morg’s Diner. Factory workers coming off shift, attorneys getting ready for the day and retirees catching up with friends mingle over fresh pancakes, hash browns and orange juice. The place is usually packed, and the prices are reasonable. Although Morg s is famous for its breakfast, Ludwig said the restaurant is also busy over the lunch hour. A staple since 1945, Morg’s was started across the river on West Fourth Street by H.W. Morgenson. The second location on Mulberry Street, the one that remains today, opened in 1960. Ludwig owns the business with Ron Goodwin.

Over the years, the restaurant has kept its character. “I don’t want to lose anything that is Morg’s,” she said. “We just do the same thing every day. We try to remember their names and try to remember their orders. I think people like that when they come in, and you know them by name,” she said.

Voted Best of the Best Hotel/Motel in the annual competition by the Waterloo Courier for the last four consecutive years, the hotel features comfortable, modern rooms. Each room has been refreshed with new
mattresses, designer window treatments and refrigerators. A sundry shop was also constructed next to the front desk allowing guests the option to purchase necessities and snacks 24 hours a day. Many overnight guests looked for a fitness center when the property first opened. The staff at Isle listened and added a fitness center with everything a guest needs for a great workout. Treadmills, elliptical machines, balance balls and weights can be found in the fitness center next to the pool. The casino itself is ever-evolving. There are currently 950 state-of-the-art slot games including slots with 3-D technology. Guests can find their classic favorites as well as the newest technology. Isle’s slot operations team continually works with game manufacturers to bring in the newest, most popular games for the Cedar Valley to try. Table games are available for those who prefer this type of play. With 25 games available you are sure to find one you love. Live poker is available each weekend upstairs in the poker room. Isle has found a niche offering commission-free baccarat games. When baccarat was originally introduced at the Isle a few years ago the feedback from guests included wanting a commission-free version of the game; today guests are enjoying this option.

Hansen’s Dairy Waterloo HONORABLE MENTION: ICE CREAM Our farm has been in the family for seven generations (152 years). When the four sons of Jay and Jeanne Hansen wanted to come back and work at the farm, we built a creamery to make milk, butter, cream, cheese curds and ice cream. Opening a retail store was a way to sell those products. We sell old-fashioned premium hard ice cream treats along with all Hansen’s Dairy products and other goods from local farmers and entrepreneurs. We want to be known as a hub for quality, local foods. We strive for excellent customer service and quality products. Our ice cream is made just 10 miles away from Waterloo in Hudson, with creamline milk from our closed herd of cows (not blended with other farms’ milk). Our ice cream is slow-churned and made the old-fashioned way. Hansen’s was named one of CNN’s 5 Mouthwatering Ice Cream Tours in 2011 and has been featured on three Iowa Public Television shows in the past year for

While the Waterloo store used to be called Moo Roo (combining our cows and kangaroos we have on the farm), we have updated our logo and retail store signage to be called Hansen’s Dairy. For the last 11 years, I have had the good fortune of working with Farm Bureau, and more importantly, all of my clients. I grew up around the business and the company as my grandfather, father and brother are or were with the company. I saw how much they cared about their clients and what they could do to help them. I never intended to follow them into the business, but life led me to the place I am today. After attending and graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, my wife and I set roots in the Cedar Valley and never looked back. A trip to California’s wine country takes off next month. “When you travel with us, you get the added enjoyment of planning your vacation with friends before the trip, and recalling the fun memories of the trip when you get home,” says Carolyn Martin, director of volunteer services and trip leader.
Looking ahead
A challenging environment of changing expectations – via health care reform, the move to managed Medicaid, the coming influx of baby boomers with different desires – can be viewed as a threat or opportunity. Western Home Communities chooses the latter. That response stems from the mission, vision and values of Western Home Communities: not just words printed on a page, but daily direction for how the organization operates, now and into the future.
