Life 101.9 ‌FIRST PLACE: RADIO STATION In 1953, the University of Northwestern, then Northwestern College, purchased KNWS-AM in Waterloo for $60,000 as part of their vision for a media outreach to share God’s love on radio stations around the upper midwest. I was putting myself through business school and wrestling at University of Northern Iowa. I also saw the importance of putting on a quality roof that would protect one’s family and/or livelihood. I’ve never been a stranger to hard work and I always saw myself doing something that would allow me to enrich my community by building a trusted, quality product. Everyone needs a roof over their heads,

Cedar Valley Hospice ‌ IRST PLACE: MEDICAL STAFF MEMBER -- DR. JOHN ZEHR; NURSE PRACTITIONER -- ERICA JENSEN; RECEPTIONIST -- BERDELL SCHAULS F HONORABLE MENTION: PROGRAM BENEFITTING YOUTH -- EUCALYPTUS TREE GRIEF SERVICES; MEDICAL STAFF MEMBER -- DEB CARD; HOME HEALTH AGENCY An organization is only as successful as the people who work for it. In the beginning, the notion was that if enough volunteers poured their heart into a mission of starting a hospice, they could change the lives of so many in our community. Throughout four decades, strides have been made to honor this goal to provide compassionate and dignified endof-life services to families. Today, Cedar Valley Hospice has a solid foundation and the expertise to continue this journey, and they credit their employees and volunteers. In its 40th year, Cedar Valley Hospice offers the most experienced staff and compassionate care in Northeast Iowa. Combined, its staff has an average

of almost eight years each working for the organization. This is nearly double the median number of years a worker is employed at a business, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means their employees believe in and are committed to the calling of helping others. Likewise, the organization is equally as committed to making sure its employees have the tools to be successful in fulfilling our mission. At Cedar Valley Hospice, expert care is a top priority, which means its staff training program needs to follow suit. Thanks to some generous donors and grants, a new simulation lab was created to masterfully train the organization’s best practices to its staff. The goal of the lab is to provide a place where clinicians can train in an actual setting that is similar to a person’s room in their home — which is where Cedar Valley Hospice cares for the vast majority of its patients. The simulation lab is equipped with furniture, a medical bed,

a mannequin, and a Go PRO video monitoring system with audio equipment that can simulate and record teaching sessions. Ultimately, all employees will undergo the same intensive training, further ensuring visit standards and understanding, along with consistency and top-quality care. They are calling it the Cedar Valley Hospice Experience. When you ask for Cedar Valley Hospice, it means you do not have to travel your journey alone. Making the call sooner rather than when you are in a

crisis situation ensures a better quality of life for the patient and support for the whole family. As part of the Cedar Valley Hospice Experience, you receive: — A team of experts to care for your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. — Staff trained to Cedar Valley Hospice standards in its new simulation lab. — The highest level of knowledge, respect, and compassionate care. — An organization with a 40-year history of helping families make each moment matter. It’s important to feel in control of your health care. Let Cedar Valley Hospice help you navigate the health care system, get answers to important questions, and ultimately manage your symptoms and ease your pain. It’s never too soon to call and get the support you and your family deserve. Their experts are waiting to provide you with the Best of the Best care, every time.

Bill Colwell Ford ‌FIRST PLACE: AUTO DEALERSHIP, AUTO SERVICE, AUTOMOTIVE SALESPERSON — ERNIE DOEDEN, BRAKE SERVICE (QUICK LANE), OIL CHANGE SERVICE (QUICK LANE), TRANSMISSIONS HONORABLE MENTION: AUTOMOTIVE SALESPERSON — AL SHEPARD AND DAVID PEREZ Bill Colwell Ford, located in Hudson, wants to thank all their loyal customers for voting their dealership the Cedar Valley’s No. 1 overall dealership to do business with year after year. And they’re extremely privileged to be recognized as the Best of the Best in Auto Service, Transmission Repair, Oil Change Service (Quick Lane), Brake Service (Quick Lane), and Automotive Salesperson to Ernie Doeden. They also want to recognize David Perez and Al Shepard as honorable mentions in the Automotive Salesperson category. Not only is the dealership being recognized as the Best of the Best in the Cedar Valley, but 2019 marks their 35th year in business. If you ask Bill what the success of Bill Colwell Ford can be attributed to, he would simply reply with two words, “our employees.” The growth this company has seen in the past 35 years is from the consistent hard work from its employees. Bill set a standard of how to take care of their customers and the employees have followed it, and because of that they have built a repeat loyal business. “All of our employees know that our customers can buy a car or get their oil changed anywhere, which is why we have to go above and beyond when it comes to customer service,” said Bill Colwell. Customers may have plenty of options when it comes to purchasing and servicing their vehicle, but they choose Bill Colwell Ford year after year. On average, the Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center performs 50 oil changes a day — around 1,300 a month. And over the past 35 years Bill Colwell Ford has sold over 45,000 vehicles to customers spanning four generations. When Bill Colwell opened the doors in 1984, he believed in treating his customers and employees with respect and fairness. He had seen some of the pushy sales tactics that were being used by some dealerships in the 1970s and knew he wanted his business to be different. He wanted an ethical business where his employees were trained right and represented the manufacturer accurately. Thirty-five years later, the business has

Blake and Bill Colwell in front of the dealership with “Bill’s Bird.” grown from six to 57 employees, with over 500 combined years of experience. There are 27 employees in the quick lane, service, and parts departments with over 250 combined years of experience. And in the sales department, there are 18 employees with over 200 years of combined experience. Those numbers are pretty incredible considering Bill was the only salesperson when he opened in 1984. In the past 35 years the corner of Highway 63 and Waterloo Road in Hudson has changed quite a bit. In 2012, the dealership began building a new facility behind the previous dealership, which was built in 1960. In October 2013, the grand re-opening of Bill Colwell Ford was held. In July 2016, Bill Colwell Ford expanded and opened the Cedar Valley Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center. This summer saw a complete remodel of their service drive. Also under constant improvement is Bill Colwell Ford’s virtual location. Their website,, is always being updated with new inventory, photos, and blogs. They also recently launched their new “Personalize Your Payment” tool so customers can start the buying process from the comfort of their own home. And the dealership has a large social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, where they upload videos every week on different automotive topics. “All of these changes have been made with the customer in mind. From day one our goal has been to make the buying process and ownership experience simple and stress free. And as time goes on, we as

a company have to change and keep improving to accommodate our customers,” noted Bill Colwell. Not only has the dealership evolved over the years, but their employees have as well. All departments are constantly being trained to stay up to date with the ever-changing auto industry. As vehicle technology progresses, it requires increased levels of knowledge and skills for automotive technicians and the sales staff. The service department has three senior master technicians including Dan Vaughn, Ben Wilson, and Ross Anderson, who just recently moved into a service adviser role. Senior master technician is Ford Motor Company’s highest technician certification, requiring over 550 hours of Ford training. “As a dealership we have never been more qualified than we are now, and our customers recognize that. Between the number of technicians, including three senior master technicians, the amount of training we do on a regular basis, and the equipment we have to fix cars. Our employees are confident when it comes to helping our customers,” said Blake Colwell, general manager at Bill Colwell Ford. With 35 years of hard work it’s no surprise that the dealership has won its fair share of awards. Bill Colwell Ford has won numerous customer satisfaction awards, including the prestigious President’s Award from Ford Motor Company three times. The award recognizes dealers for excellence in providing outstanding customer service and satisfaction. They have also been voted the Best of the Best mul-

As busy as Bill Colwell Ford is, they still are able to find time to give back to the community. It recently held its 11th Annual Drive 4 UR School event for the Hudson Athletic Booster Club. As of 2018, Bill Colwell Ford has raised over $62,000 for the organization, a number that keeps growing. The booster club uses the money for uniform and equipment replacement. Bill Colwell Ford has also worked with other organizations including Cedar Valley Hospice, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Cedar Bend Humane Society, House of Hope, and Friends of the Family. “Being able to give back to those who have given us a chance to earn their business is what keeps our business going. The Cedar Valley is a great community and we’re happy to give back and be a part of it,” said Bill Colwell. If you are in the market for a new, preowned, or Certified Pre-Owned vehicle feel free to give Bill Colwell Ford a call or visit their new website, which has thousands of pictures and information on their inventory. If you’re not in the market for a new vehicle, they also have an outstanding service department and Quick Lane facility to help maintain your current vehicle. Of course, you can always stop by the dealership to get assistance with any automotive need, or just to say hi and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Lost Island Water Park ‌HONORABLE MENTION: LOCAL/STATE DAY TRIP, FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT ‌For 19 years, guests at Lost Island Waterpark have been treated to a tropical paradise without needing a passport. Fans from near and far have made the Waterloo water park one of the country’s favorite places to make a splash. Lost Island Waterpark was recently named the No. 2 Best Outdoor Water Park in the country in USA Today’s “10 Best Readers’ Choice 2019.” It’s the third year in a row that the water park has made the list. The USA Today article noted that Lost Island guests can “catch a wave in Tsunami Bay, float the Kailahi River, play some volleyball in Blue Iguana Lagoon or ride one of the world’s hydromagnetic water coasters, Wailua Kupua.” Then there’s Lost Soul Falls, for those who live life on the edge. “Not for the faint of heart” best describes this slide, which sends riders free falling at 28 feet per second. Guests can relax and kick back out of the sun in a space reserved exclusively for them. Lost Island’s cabanas make for a great meeting spot for families on the go. There are 26 cabanas scattered around

the park, including standard and deluxe cabanas. Lost Island owners, Gary and Becky Bertch and family, say the park’s continuous improvement is what keeps fans coming back for more. “Whether we are upgrading our pointof-sale systems, switching up our menu, adding new amenities, or eliminating single-use plastic, we never stop evolving our business,” the family said. “We are passionate about creating a memorable guest experience.” Recently, the Bertch family announced plans to develop a major theme park south of Lost Island Waterpark. The proposed Lost Island Theme Park would include roller coasters and other thrill rides on nearly 200 acres of farmland across Shaulis Road from the water park and Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo.

Oakridge Realtors, their staff, and agents are actively involved in the communities they serve. “The Pink Ribbon Run, Boys and Girls Club, Sartori Festival of Trees, Habitat for Humanity, GBPAC’s Beers to You, Cedar Falls Community Theatre, Hartman Reserve, College Hill Arts Festival, Cedar Valley Hospice, Love INC, the Oakridge Easter Egg Hunt, and The United Way are all organizations and events where our agents are giving back to their communities,” said Lyons. “We

are especially excited to be a presenting sponsor for the Pink Ribbon Run again this year.” “While we understand the importance of investing in our agents we also recognize the value of investing in our communities,” added Berregaard. An area of interest to both home sellers and buyers is the technology changes that have impacted the ways in which residential real estate is marketed. Ericson and Page direct the deployment of technology at Oakridge.

“Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, and an upgraded interactive website are all tools that Oakridge agents utilize to facilitate making the buyer-seller connection,” Page said. Ericson added, “A strong online presence is essential in today’s real estate market. We are able to provide that for our clients.” As Courier Communications’ Best of the Best real estate firm for the 12th consecutive year, Oakridge Realtors has made their case: In the Cedar Valley, we “Trust the Leader!”

T.E.A.M. Builders ‌FIRST PLACE: REMODELER | HONORABLE MENTION: ROOFER Some choose contruction business ‌ by happenstance. Others choose it by choice. Trevor Engels and Austin Maginnis chose it because they believed they could make an impact. So many new contractors are here today, but gone tomorrow. In fact, 57% of new construction businesses fail within the first year; that number grows to 97% by year five, according to Maginnis. Engels and Maginnis stared these statistics in the face and chose to move forward. At the August 2017 launch of their business, the duo each had young, growing families and other employment. What seemed like a risk to those close to Engels and Maginnis was actually a leap of faith with a heavy dose of optimism and determination to someday make it. They knew they first had to build the business, and success would come as

they gained more experience. Today, they continue to exceed that goal. T.E.A.M. Builders was built on the philosophy that “we can do anything and everything,” Engels said. “Our team has put to use all they’ve learned and we’ve built this business on that.” Exterior specialties include decks, roofing, siding, fences, and pergolas. T.E.A.M.’s interior specialties are full home remodels, kitchens, and finished basements. The business is staffed with skilled,

hard-working craftsmen. “We simply have the best employees who have created the best working environment,” Maginnis said. “Our guys in the field are always positive, pleasant to be around, fun, and hard-working.” Additionally, Engels teaches carpentry at Hawkeye Community College and Maginnis teaches construction management at the University of Northern Iowa. “We try to treat our clients’ homes as if they were our own,” Maginnis said.

“From the initial consultation, through the install process, to the final project closeout, we strive to add value and quality to every situation. We instill this philosophy in our day-to-day operations of the business. ... We have been able to create a positive working atmosphere that is built around trust, communication, and teamwork.” Last year T.E.A.M. Builders received Best of the Best honorable mention in the remodel category, and this year took the first-place award. The company appreciates the accolades but noted the best reward is a happy customer. “The best recognition we can receive is a referral from a happy client,” Engels said.

Western Home Communities FIRST PLACE: RETIREMENT COMMUNITY, ASSISTED LIVING, NURSING HOME, HOME HEALTH AGENCY —ATHOME WITH WESTERN HOME, PHYSICAL THERAPIST — KRISTIN HENRY HONORABLE MENTION: RECEPTIONIST — SUZANNE MAKINSTER; PHYSICAL THERAPIST — STEPHANIE HANSEN Innovation doesn’t just happen. It takes out-of-the-box ideas, bold vision, a willingness to take calculated risks. And it’s a core value of Western Home Communities, a provider of housing and services for older adults since 1912. You see this innovative spirit in a myriad of new buildings and services, and in how the not-for-profit organization’s employees work to assertively create fulfilling lifestyles for residents and clients — whether they’re active and on-the-go or in need of fulltime care. It’s this spirit that keeps Western Home Communities growing and thriving after 107 years in Cedar Falls.

The Deery Suites: Recover after surgery It takes innovative thinking to create a place for recovery that’s different from hospitals and traditional nursing homes. “It’s peaceful, which is really important because recovery and therapy can be hard word,” says administrator Bethany Wentink. “We have just 20 residents per household so it’s a smaller team of caregivers who can respond to individual needs.” The Deery Suites, opened in summer 2018, allow older adults who’ve had a surgery, injury or illness to recover with all the comforts of home, plus the most upto-date skilled nursing care and therapies available. Residents working to regain strength and return home appreciate the privacy of a bedroom-and-bathroom suite they don’t have to share with anyone else, and the comfortable, quiet surroundings with large, bright windows and easy access to the patio for fresh air. “The staff here is excellent,” says Clifford Wiebke of Nashua, who recently recovered at The Deery Suites after being hit by a car. He says therapists helped him regain the ability to walk. “I would highly recommend this to anyone who has to go for therapy. It’s a wonderful place.” Cliff raved about the meals he was served during his stay. He and his wife, Verna, also attended Fresh Wind Worship services on Sunday mornings inside Diamond Event

Additional amenities inside Jorgensen Plaza make The Deery Suites feel more like a hotel for short-term residents.  The Market — grab-and-go deli foods, cards, gifts, games  Caraway Café — sandwiches, soups, paninis, pastries, and coffee  Gilmore’s Pub — burgers, fries, sandwiches, salads, beer, and cocktails  Table 1912 — creative cuisine, extensive wine list  Salon Iris — Aveda products and services, massage therapy, facials, nail care, beauticians  Diamond Event Center — flexible space for up to 400 at tables, on-site catering team  The Grosse Aquatic & Wellness Center — pool, walking track, exercise classroom, stationary bikes, treadmills, weights

Jorgensen Plaza: Outpatient therapy Anyone who needs therapy can now request these services at Western Home Communities, since the team of speech, occupational, and physical therapists of-

fers outpatient care. Therapists use innovative programs to pinpoint specific therapy needs and target problem areas faster. They often use the 25-yard, four-lane lap pool with its circular resistance channel for aqua therapy sessions. The water’s buoyancy reduces pressure on joints, making it easier to do therapy — especially for those with arthri-

As Western Home Communities planned for the future, leaders envisioned a bustling hub that would serve residents, employees, and the greater Cedar Valley, fostering important intergenerational connections. “We created spaces and venues for that to happen, with a focus on all aspects of well-being,” explains CEO Kris Hansen. “We’re excited to see how this place is bringing everyone together, even young kids. They’re dining or swimming with their grandparents or coming into the salon and making new friends from a different generation. It’s exactly what we hoped.”
