Life 101.9 FIRST PLACE: RADIO STATION In 1953, the University of Northwestern, then Northwestern College, purchased KNWS-AM in Waterloo for $60,000 as part of their vision for a media outreach to share God’s love on radio stations around the upper midwest. That vision was implemented by well-known evangelist Billy Graham, who was the second president of the college. After 12 years of ministry, KNWS-FM (Life 101.9) went on the air in 1965 to expand the reach of the ministry to a larger area around eastern Iowa. For 54 years, Life 101.9 has featured uplifting music and encouraging stories for all of Eastern Iowa. In a world that can be negative and discouraging, Life 101.9 exists to share God’s love with each person who listens. In the beginning, the notion was that if enough volunteers poured their heart into a mission of starting a hospice, they could change the lives of so many in our community. Throughout four decades, strides have been made to honor this goal to provide compassionate and dignified endof-life services to families. Today, Cedar Valley Hospice has a solid foundation and the expertise to continue this journey, and they credit their employees and volunteers. In its 40th year, Cedar Valley Hospice offers the most experienced staff and compassionate care in Northeast Iowa. Combined, its staff has an average
of almost eight years each working for the organization. This is nearly double the median number of years a worker is employed at a business, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means their employees believe in and are committed to the calling of helping others. On average, the Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center performs 50 oil changes a day — around 1,300 a month. And over the past 35 years Bill Colwell Ford has sold over 45,000 vehicles to customers spanning four generations. When Bill Colwell opened the doors in 1984, he believed in treating his customers and employees with respect and fairness. He had seen some of the pushy sales tactics that were being used by some dealerships in the 1970s and knew he wanted his business to be different. He wanted an ethical business where his employees were trained right and represented the manufacturer accurately. Thirty-five years later, the business has

There are 27 employees in the quick lane, service, and parts departments with over 250 combined years of experience. And in the sales department, there are 18 employees with over 200 years of combined experience. Those numbers are pretty incredible considering Bill was the only salesperson when he opened in 1984. In the past 35 years the corner of Highway 63 and Waterloo Road in Hudson has changed quite a bit. In 2012, the dealership began building a new facility behind the previous dealership, which was built in 1960. In October 2013, the grand re-opening of Bill Colwell Ford was held. In July 2016, Bill Colwell Ford expanded and opened the Cedar Valley Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center. This summer saw a complete remodel of their service drive. Also under constant improvement is Bill Colwell Ford’s virtual location. Their website, www.billcolwellford.com, is always being updated with new inventory, photos, and blogs. They also recently launched their new “Personalize Your Payment” tool so customers can start the buying process from the comfort of their own home. And the dealership has a large social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, where they upload videos every week on different automotive topics. “All of these changes have been made with the customer in mind. From day one our goal has been to make the buying process and ownership experience simple and stress free. And as time goes on, we as
a company have to change and keep improving to accommodate our customers,” noted Bill Colwell. Not only has the dealership evolved over the years, but their employees have as well. All departments are constantly being trained to stay up to date with the ever-changing auto industry. As vehicle technology progresses, it requires increased levels of knowledge and skills for automotive technicians and the sales staff. The service department has three senior master technicians including Dan Vaughn, Ben Wilson, and Ross Anderson, who just recently moved into a service adviser role. Senior master technician is Ford Motor Company’s highest technician certification, requiring over 550 hours of Ford training. “As a dealership we have never been more qualified than we are now, and our customers recognize that. Between the number of technicians, including three senior master technicians, the amount of training we do on a regular basis, and the equipment we have to fix cars. Our employees are confident when it comes to helping our customers,” said Blake Colwell, general manager at Bill Colwell Ford. With 35 years of hard work it’s no surprise that the dealership has won its fair share of awards. Bill Colwell Ford has won numerous customer satisfaction awards, including the prestigious President’s Award from Ford Motor Company three times. Lost Island Water Park HONORABLE MENTION: LOCAL/STATE DAY TRIP, FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT For 19 years, guests at Lost Island Waterpark have been treated to a tropical paradise without needing a passport. Fans from near and far have made the Waterloo water park one of the country’s favorite places to make a splash. Lost Island Waterpark was recently named the No. 2 Best Outdoor Water Park in the country in USA Today’s “10 Best Readers’ Choice 2019.” It’s the third year in a row that the water park has made the list. The USA Today article noted that Lost Island guests can “catch a wave in Tsunami Bay, float the Kailahi River, play some volleyball in Blue Iguana Lagoon or ride one of the world’s hydromagnetic water coasters, Wailua Kupua.” Then there’s Lost Soul Falls, for those who live life on the edge. “Not for the faint of heart” best describes this slide, which sends riders free falling at 28 feet per second. Guests can relax and kick back out of the sun in a space reserved exclusively for them. Lost Island’s cabanas make for a great meeting spot for families on the go. There are 26 cabanas scattered around

The Deery Suites: Recover after surgery It takes innovative thinking to create a place for recovery that’s different from hospitals and traditional nursing homes. “It’s peaceful, which is really important because recovery and therapy can be hard word,” says administrator Bethany Wentink. “We have just 20 residents per household so it’s a smaller team of caregivers who can respond to individual needs.” The Deery Suites, opened in summer 2018, allow older adults who’ve had a surgery, injury or illness to recover with all the comforts of home, plus the most upto-date skilled nursing care and therapies available. Residents working to regain strength and return home appreciate the privacy of a bedroom-and-bathroom suite they don’t have to share with anyone else, and the comfortable, quiet surroundings with large, bright windows and easy access to the patio for fresh air. “The staff here is excellent,” says Clifford Wiebke of Nashua, who recently recovered at The Deery Suites after being hit by a car. He says therapists helped him regain the ability to walk. “I would highly recommend this to anyone who has to go for therapy. It’s a wonderful place.” Cliff raved about the meals he was served during his stay. He and his wife, Verna, also attended Fresh Wind Worship services on Sunday mornings inside Diamond Event
