ELECTRIC VEHICLE GROUP BUY EVENT

Overview

Wisconsin Clean Cities is proud to present Wisconsin’s very first electric vehicle group, REV UP WISCONSIN. Thanks to our several project partners, the event will provide Wisconsin residents huge discounts on the energy-efficient 2016 Nissan Leaf. The Nissan Leaf is one of the premier electric vehicles currently on the market due to extended battery range, environmentally-conscious design, and huge potential savings. This event runs from August until September so be sure to stop by one of the participating locations to ensure you get your hands on one of these vehicles! Click here for more details on the event! Plug-in electric vehicles can help to substantially improve urban air quality because they have zero (or very limited) tailpipe emissions—emissions like CO2, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides that are produced by conventional vehicles. Moreover, depending on the fuel used to generate the electricity powering them, electric vehicles can also offer significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

ALTERNATIVES TO RISING DIESEL PRICES According to recent reports, the cost of diesel fuel in the U.S. is expected to rise substantially over the next decade. To avoid these rising rates, many fleet managers around the country are replacing their diesel vehicles with alternative fuel models, like those that run on abundant, American-made propane autogas. However, for fleet managers who have not yet made the switch, there is now even more reason to consider alternative fuels. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are jointly proposing stricter diesel regulations that are going to drive the fuel costs even higher. How much higher? Approximately $1,150 to $1,990 per vehicle higher in the first year (2021) and $1,770 to $1,990 per vehicle in years 2024-27. To combat these fees, many transit agencies are making the move to clean-burning, cost-effective propane autogas. For example, Florida’s Lee County transit agency added 20 Ford E-450s equipped with ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas fuel systems to its fleet. The transit agency has seen such success, that it plans to replace the rest of its diesel-powered paratransit shuttles with propane-fueled models over the next five years. With more than 45 percent of its paratransit fleet now operating on propane autogas, LeeTran is averaging $.50 per gallon of propane compared with about $1.50 per gallon for diesel. Aside from cost savings, the agency also expects to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 1.8 million pounds over the shuttles’ lifetime. “We are converting our vehicles to operate on propane autogas for a number of reasons,” says Robert Southall, maintenance manager of LeeTran. “It’s an American-made fuel with significant environmental benefits; converting to propane infrastructure is more affordable; and propane autogas offers lower fuels prices.” Propane autogas is a nontoxic, non-carcinogenic and non-corrosive fuel. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies the fuel as a non-contaminant. It is the leading alternative fuel in the United States and the third most commonly used vehicle fuel, following gasoline and diesel. About 25 million vehicles travel worldwide with propane in their fuel tank.

DIESEL 404-401 TANK AND FUEL SYSTEM INSPECTION CLASS This course is designed to instruct students in the proper procedures required to visually inspect CNG fuel systems from high pressure cylinders to the first stage regulator. It covers cylinder identification, installation, General and Detailed Visual Inspections. The class will be hosted at Milwaukee Area Technical College (South Campus) on August 15th and 16th. The class runs from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM on both days. The address of the campus is 6665 S. Howell Ave. Oak Creek WI, 53154. The cost of the course is $67.96 per attendee. Current regulations require all CNG tanks visually inspected by a certified inspector every 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever comes first or in the event of an accident or fire on the vehicle. This class would cover the inspection requirements and techniques as defined by industry standards and regulations. The class focus is on the high pressure portion of the fuel system from the cylinders to the first stage regulator. This class would serve as a preparatory class for a student who would like to take the CSA certification exam to become a Certified CNG Fuel System Inspector. Seating in both classes is limited to 16 participants per class due to the hands on focus of the class. To register for the class click here. Contact Craig Kuehl at 414-571 4766 or kuehlc@matc.edu with any questions about the course.
