FROM THE WBS As we near the end of 2010, we at the WBS have much to be grateful for. 2010 presented many challenges including an unrelenting poor economy and an unprecedented environmental catastrophe presented by the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. We are most grateful that these difficult times are behind us and the rebuilding of our economy, our businesses and our lives has started. Too many remain struggling and hard times will continue. However for the first time in longer than we wish to remember, the light at the end of the tunnel no longer seems like an onrushing train, but a ray of hope that conditions are improving. On behalf of everyone associated with the WBS, we wish to thank our sponsors, advertisers, tournament directors, captains, mates and most of all, our anglers and volunteers who support the tournaments and the charitable events that make up the WBS World Tour. We look forward to 2011 with great optimism and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year! The World Billfish Series

INDUSTRY NEWS

WBS WANTS 99.6% PERCENT OF FEDERAL WATERS NOW OPEN TO STAY CONNECTED WITH OUR ANGLERS NOAA has reopened to commercial and recreational fishing 8,403 square miles of Gulf waters which extend from the Louisiana state water line to due south of the Alabama/Florida state line. This is the eleventh reopening in federal waters since July 22. This reopening was announced after consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and under a reopening protocol agreed to by NOAA, the FDA, and the Gulf states. The total area reopened is about 3.5 percent of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico and 89 percent of the current closed area. No oil or sheen has been documented in the area since July 25.

We here at the World Billfish Series want to do all we can to keep our membership, anglers, fans and anyone else who might be interested in whats happening on the WBS World Tour as up to date as possible. That is why we have created a Facebook and Twitter account open to everyone. These two forms of social media networks provide a wealth of information and are updated often to help keep you up to date on tournament changes, news and angler accomplishments. The quick links to both our Facebook and Twitter accounts can be found on the home page of our FishWBS.com website. You can see everything that we post on Facebook immediately on Twitter as we have linked these two accounts. This is part of our on going drive to make sure that everyone knows what is going on here at the WBS.

At its closest point, the area to be reopened is about 10 miles from the wellhead. NOAA sampled this area between August 31 and November 1 for finfish and shrimp, including tuna, swordfish, escolar, and royal red shrimp. Sensory analyses of 286 finfish samples and 55 shrimp samples and chemical analyses of 207 finfish samples in 33 composites and 50 shrimp samples in nine composites followed the methodology and procedures in the reopening protocol, with sensory analysis finding no detectable oil or dispersant odors or flavors, and results of chemical analysis for oil-related compounds and dispersants well below the levels of concern. “This is the first reopening where we have added a supplemental test to detect dispersants in seafood, and all the samples passed,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under

secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “This is yet another indication that our Gulf seafood is safe for consumption.” As announced on October 29, 2010, NOAA and FDA have developed and implemented a chemical test to detect the presence of dispersants in fish, oysters, crabs and shrimp. The level of concern for dispersants is 100 parts per million for finfish and 500 parts per million for shrimp. The test can reliably detect Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS) at levels of 2,000 times below the lowest level of concern.

NOAA continues to work closely with the FDA and the Gulf states to ensure seafood safety. NOAA and FDA are working together on broad-scale seafood sampling that includes sampling seafood from inside and outside the closure area, as well as dockside and market-based sampling. An area covering 1,041 square miles immediately surrounding the wellhead, remains closed to fishing. The boundary of the fishery closure has changed 32 times after it was first instituted on May 2, at which time it covered about 3 percent (6,817 square miles) of Gulf waters around the wellhead. As oil continued to spill from the wellhead, the area grew in size, peaking at 37 percent (88,522 square miles) of Gulf waters on June 2. To date, NOAA has reopened more than 82,900 square miles of oil-impacted federal waters under this protocol and sampling regime.

INCREASED FATALITIES PROMPT FWC TO REACH OUT TO BOATERS With just a few weeks remaining in the year, 2010 has proved to be a tragic one for boating accidents. So far, there have been 76 boating fatalities, a 24percent increase from this time last year. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants Florida boaters to reverse this trend. "The most unfortunate part about these statistics is boating fatalities are usually preventable," said Capt. Tom Shipp of the FWC's Boating and Waterways Section. While the FWC patrols Florida's waterways and strongly promotes boating safety year-round, this year's higher number of fatalities prompted an increased emphasis on prevention. At least 41 of the 76 deaths were due to drowning, and the FWC has some advice about that. "One of the best ways to prevent a drowning is simply to wear a life jacket," Shipp said. "Boaters don't always expect to find themselves in the water, but if they do, a life jacket can save a life." There is a variety of life jackets available to boaters. New styles are much smaller, lighter and more comfortable to wear than the traditional vest-style life jacket. "The ‘belt pack' is worn around the waist. A ‘suspender' style is also available," said Brian Rehwinkel, outreach coordinator for the FWC's Boating and Waterways Section. "These types of life jackets are inflatable, and some models activate automatically if the wearer falls into the water." While a few unusual accidents have occurred this year, the majority are similar to those of recent years. They involve boaters failing to pay attention to their surroundings, neglecting to wear life jackets and operating at high speeds. "We strongly urge boaters to follow safe boating practices," Shipp said. "Pay attention to the weather and your surroundings, make sure your boat and motor are in good working condition, check all safety equipment before embarking, and don't drink and operate a boat." The FWC also encourages boaters of any age to take a boating safety course. To find a course or more boating safety information, visit MyFWC.com/Boating or call 850-488-5600.

Story by Barry L. Wickre

As the tournament began the big question on the minds of all the teams was which direction they should choose for their hunting grounds.

T

he 27th Annual Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament took place at Pirate’s Cove Marina in Manteo, NC., was planned out to be their biggest and best yet with lots of fun and festivities for the entire family. Of course competive fishing was on the agenda for all who wished to go out on the water. For those who wished to stay on tera firma the plans were for a ladies day out to local dress shops for a fun day of shopping. A mixology classes (sampling encouraged), and a jewelry show and a fashion show so our line ladies could show off their new clothes and jewelry. The Embers Band was on hand to seranade all our anglers and friends at

the Beach Party. Friends, fun and family combined with good music, good food, captain and mate contests, and giveaways kept the spirits up and the fun flowing for everyone. Sixty-nine boats and over four-hundred anglers participated this year. The Anglers had to fished three out of four

days from August 10 – 13 with them choosing which day would be their lay day. The big question on day one of the fishing event for the participating teams was which way should the teams go when the boats head out of Oregon Inlet. Should they go North or South?

For several weeks there had been a good number of sailfish in the area south of Cape Hatteras and to the north so the white marlin fishing had been heating up. Only time would tell as the boats came back in to report their catch which way was the best and if they made the right decision. One-hundred fifty-five White Marlin, nine Blue Marlin, and thirty-three Sailfish were released during the Tournament with moderate sea conditions.

First place and the big check was awarded to team Uno Mas.

After four days of fishing the total prize money distributed during the tournament was $612,890. Uno Mas out of Ft. Lauderdale took first place with total winning of $326,317. Captain Glynn Loftin out of Pirate’s Cove on Stefanie Ann, fishing with all junior anglers ages 9 to 15 years old took second place with total winning of $122,027. Captain Michael Birch in the Caroline out of Fayetteville, NC took third place with total winning of $81,352.

The Stephanie Ann came in at second place.

The Pirates Cove Big Game Tournaments is proud to be working with our local charities to raise money for their causes. Thanks goes out to all of the participants sponsors and volunteers who help make this event possible. We have earned over $20,000.00 so far this week for these groups. Come by, help out and buy a ticket to win a new Harley Davidson Electra Glide to help benefit the Billfish Foundation. he boat Islamar won the International Billfish Tournament with six releases, followed by Tati Way boat with five releases. Three other boats scored four marlins each (50/50, Ambush and Gaviota) in the four days of competition which ended with 69 releases. Local angler Federico “Fico” Lopez Juarbe retained his top position as angler with three releases or 1,200 points, followed by Thomas Cordero, female angler Cristina Muñoz, Miguel A. Donato and Luis Alberto Rubi. In fact, seven female anglers had an extraordinary participation. Cristina Muñoz released three, Carolina Figueredo released two, and five other anglers released a fish each. Joe Clark, from BVI and Scrub Island, Jay Iqbal from Pakistan and Clark Smith from Florida won the first, second and third positions as International Anglers. As international teams won first place USA (Thomas Cordero, Bill Crawford and Jamie Rezor); Honduras (Rigoberto Alvarenga, Luis A. Rubi and Herbert Soto) and British Virgin Islands (Clark, Julio Betances and Alexis Barbosa Seijo). Interclub Teams winners –Venezuela’s Laguna Mar Club, Puerto Rico’s Cangrejos Yacht Club and Club Náutico de San Juan (CNSJ) —were represented by William Morrison, Osvaldo de Leon and Jose Luis Ramirez fishing for Venezuela; Donald McLeod, Salvador Egea, Jr., and Manuel Matienzo fishing for Cangrejos Yacht Club; and Miguel Donato, René de la Cruz and Jose Diaz Umpierre for CNSJ.

“We had a superb tournament with 69 released and 12 competing countries,” said Frankie Mirandes, Tournament Chairman. “Puerto Rico is and remains one of the top marlin destinations in the world. We were able to prove that with satellites information and other data and guide participating boats towards the fishing hot spots with plenty of strikes, basically concentrating in those coordinates suggested by the Organizing Committee,” said Mirandes. “Now we begin planning next year’s edition and keep our efforts across the world to bring the best deep-sea anglers to Puerto Rico.” From picking up international anglers at the airport, welcoming them and taking them to their hotels to a wide array of activities, every Club member knows that the Tournament is the Club’s flag event of the year. Again, this year, Marely Gutierrez, Tournament coordinator, enjoyed it to the fullest. The “Marlin International Dancers” delighted all those present at the traditional “Fiesta Típica,” which this year turned itself into a “Disco Party”. The Club changed into a disco music, 1980s ambiance and décor, and everyone had a batch. About 30 members of the Organizing Committee wore shiny gold or silver robes. The Tournament received international anglers as Joan Vernon on the Tijereta, Wally and Margie Adams on the Fishing Machine, Diane Locke, and other boat owners as Robb Brownin from Florida, and Jose “Pepe” Anton from Ecuador.

TJ Nutter, President of John Cannon Homes and founder of the Sarasota Slam announced at the awards ceremony that this year the anglers donated over 1000 lbs of fish to the Salvation Army of Bradenton and Sarasota.

With the situation in the Gulf this season the Slam decided to really focus on the inshore division. Team First Draw was awarded for Dolphin and Wahoo.

Each year the Sarasota Slam fishing committee selects a charity and it was unanimous with our choice this year to help Mote Marine Laboratory with their continued research to establish a “base line” for marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. Mote will continue to monitor the effects of the oil spill and will be instrumental in giving guidance to the restoration of the gulf waters back to a normal condition. With our 10th Anniversary we added a junior fishing event with the “Kids Klub” and hosted 20 kids from the Venice YMCA, sponsored by Ruth’s Chris Steak House and CB’s Saltwater Outfitters. Each of the junior anglers were given a new rod and reel to take home and fished off the docks at Marina Jack. Several fish were caught, they received Sarasota Slam Medals, had lunch on the dock and were given a tour at Mote Marine Laboratory.

Another happy team Papa Chops came in with the winning Trout.

Miami Swordfish Tournament

M

iami has always been known as a billfishing hotspot. The blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico caress the white sand beaches all year and they bring all kinds of fish into their fishing grounds.

South Florida has an excellent swordfish fishery and swordfish are truly one of the toughest predators and hardest fighting fish in the ocean. This is what makes the swordfish - the gladiator of the sea. Once an angler feels the power of a swordfish and the beauty of it in the boat or upon release, he or she will be hooked for a lifetime. Broadbills are the toughest billfish that swim the oceans and will test the endurance of any angler seeking their trophy of a lifetime. Swordfishing has also been gaining in popularity to those diehard sportfishermen. This species require a different technique then the average billfish. The folks that want to catch this elusive creature have to work a little harder and stay up much longer, in fact into the wee hours of the morning, to catch their prey. The noble swordfish will put up a definite fight. The anglers don’t leave the docks until sunset for a full nights work. The odds of hooking up one of these beasts are better when the sun goes down and the baitfish rise to the surface to feed themselves.

This year after the Blue Horizon disaster and the uncertainty of ANY events taking place in the Gulf for 2010, what started off as a potential disaster, ended up awesome for the boats in this years Miami Swordfish Tournament. The Miami Swordfish Tournament was on September 23 – 26th out of Miami Beach Marina. The captain and angler’s meeting was held Thursday night at Monty’s Raw Bar.

out was called; eleven fish had been caught with six releases and five boated fish. The Deja Bluish was still hooked up. The Reel Deal had two releases and a fish in the boat, Double D had three releases and a fish in the boat. It would all come down to the weigh-in. The Deja Bluish eventually pulled the hook on their second fish.

The food and drinks were fantastic but the talk of the meeting was the wind. The wind was forecast was 18 – 22 knots for Friday night’s fishing. On Friday, the committee called off the nights fishing; winds were at 25 knots and gusting at 35 knots. The tournament would therefore be one night of fishing on Saturday night. Saturday the wind had calmed down considerably and it looked like a great night for swordfishing. Lines in at 7:00 pm couldn’t have come soon enough; everyone was excited to get fishing. The first boat to hook up was the Deja Bluish at 8:00 pm. The bite had started and proved to be excellent throughout the night. The Double D released the first fish of the tournament at 8:11 pm. At 10:41 pm Beck Daniel on the Deja Bluish with Captain Brett Dudas put the first fish in the boat. An hour later they hooked up again with another big swordfish. Over the course of the night everyone was hooking up with fish. The lead would change several times. At 2:00 am lines

The final standings were; Reel Deal 313 points, Deja Bluish 312 points, and Double D 300 points. The largest fish and top angler honors went to Beck Daniel on the Deja Bluish. Top release went to the Double D with three releases. Eric Reynolds on the Reel Deal took home top captain and the top mate was Dimas DeLaCruz also on the Reel Deal.

The Miami Swordfish Tournament is the final leg in the “Florida Swordfish Series”. T

he 12 th annual New Smyrna Beach Billfish Invitational sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Daytona Beach was a great success, with boats tallying 121 sailfish releases along with good wahoo, tuna and dolphin fishing, in two days of calm seas and perfect fall conditions. Day one started with birds working and sailfish cutting the surface looking for bait. The first sailfish was released at 8:12 AM by the team on the Wild at Heart with the fleet continuing to enjoy a good bite through the morning. Capt. Glen Cameron on the Zues caught nine fish to win the day followed closely by Capt. Darrin Cobb on the Playtime with eight releases Friday. A total of forty nine sailfish were released by the fleet on day one. Several boats were in position to challenge after Friday’s fishing with Saturday bringing better billfishing conditions and more releases for the fleet. Day two started with cool fall temperatures but the action heated up within minutes after the ‘lines in’ call. By 8:07 AM, Billfishing Magazine

Day two started with cool fall temperatures but the action heated up within minutes after the ‘lines in” call. Capt. John Lloyd on the Grand Slam had scored the first release of the day with the fleet releasing another seventy fish on Saturday as the battle for the final standings were fought. Competing aboard his new 64-foot Weaver sportfisherman, owner Ted Smith and his talented angling team on the Southern Pride led the Chivas Regal Aruba Caribbean Cup presented by the Centro di Pesca Hadicurari, nearly wire to wire. And the small island nation of Aruba is also now firmly on the map of the world’s top fishing destinations.

Southern Pride owned by Ted Smith (third from the right) was awarded the top team award. wenty-three local and international teams joined this year’s event, the first Aruban sportfishing tournament to require the use of non-offset circle hooks. Tournament organizers were on hand to provide samples of Eagle Claw circle hooks as well as to provide guidance on rigging and fishing tips when using this new style that’s been proven to reduce post-release mortality of billfish. Some teams would choose to target sailfish in the waters close to home while others would venture far and wide in search of blue and white marlin. With the all-release format and various points scored for each species, the strategies involved would play a crucial part in determining the outcome of the day. In addition, all would be required to use Berkley 30-pound test line, while impartial observers ensured a level playing field for everyone. Each afternoon would be capped by an after-fishing cocktail party at the host marina, Varadero, with a gala awards dinner and celebration taking place at the Aruba Surfside Marina at the close of the tournament.

T

Gary Tarpley, fishing aboard the 35-foot Bertram Teaser, wasted no time in releasing the first fish of the tournament, a sailfish, just five minutes after lines in the water was announced at 8AM. The action was steady throughout the day until the late afternoon. The morning bite was especially productive for the team aboard the Southern Pride, who managed a pair of blue marlin releases before adding a white marlin a bit later. However, the local boat Talika put themselves in great position with one blue and one white marlin let go. Rounding out the top three was the Driftwood, the first to release a single blue marlin which put them ahead on time of release. There were seven blue marlin, four whites and 13 sailfish released on the first day. As is usually the case in marlin fishing, there were many, many more fish seen, hooked and lost than scored as released. While Aruba is known for consistent tradewinds and sporty offshore conditions, the tournament

there were nine blue marlin released, along with five white marlin and eight sailfish. Once again the fishing turned on and off throughout the day, with many double headers of marlin reported.

Eric Mansur’s Alina wound up the event in second place with 1,900 points; three blue marlin, one white marlin and three sailfish (plus 100 additional bonus points for the Grand Slam). The OBX/Decisive team, fishing on the Teaser, slid into third place with a big move on the third day of the tournament. They finished the event with 1,600 points; four white marlin and four sailfish. In the angler standings, the Alina’s Anthony Maduro won first place with 1,000 points. He will receive an automatic invitation to fish in the WBS Grand Championships at the end of the season in Costa Rica. Maduro was followed by Harry Vernon in second place with 900 points for the Capt. Harry’s team on the Kenny’s Toy and Southern Pride’s Tucker Colquhoun in third with 800 points.

While the third and final day of the tournament crept quietly onto the scene, it was clear that the notorious tradewinds had returned by mid-morning. Throughout the day, Mansur’s team on the Alina continued to gain ground on the Southern Pride, who managed only a pair of sailfish releases. But in the end their lead would be insurmountable: Ted Smith, Russell Petranto, Tucker Colquhoun and Mariano del Maso would be named the winners on the Southern Pride. In three days of fishing,

One of the most important outcomes of the Presidential tournaments is the conservation initiatives that are supported. At least one PSAT satellite tag will be funded for the upcoming Adopt-A-Billfish white marlin study in the southern Caribbean, and The Billfish Foundation will receive in excess of $15,000 to further continue their vital conservation work around the world. In three days of fishing, the fleet in Aruba tallied 23 blue marlin releases along with 13 white marlin and 37 sailfish.w

On Day Two, the Southern Pride picked up where they left off, releasing another pair of blue marlin for a total of 1,900 points. But the real news took place aboard the Arubanbased Alina, captained by Eric Mansur. They caught a Grand Slam for the boat, earning an extra 100 bonus points for the team by releasing a blue marlin, white marlin and a sailfish in a single day. They now held second with 1,400 points. The Energy, another boat based in Aruba, moved into third place with 1,000 points, adding a pair of blue marlin releases on Day Two to their total. For the second day of the tournament,

The WBS Top Angler award was presented to Anthony Maduro who won first place with 1,000 points.
