Dream. Aspire. Achieve. Visit to Yerkes Observatory By: Liam Farrell, 3rd Grade
On December 14th, 2023 the third grade classes got to visit Yerkes Observatory. When we first arrived at Yerkes Observatory, we saw the world’s tallest glass tree which is 31 feet tall. Then, a kind lady greeted us and then showed us inside. Next we had to sit in a brown room with a lot of chairs. They said their names and split our classes into two groups. One went outside and saw the sun through a sun spotter. The other group stayed inside and saw Wisconsin’s biggest telescope. Mrs. Schaeffer’s class was learning the Yerkes history like the two founders were George Ellery Hale and William Harper. We also learned about the moon and the solar eclipse that is happening on April 4th, 2024. Mrs.Biley’s class was learning about gravity, black holes, orbit, then played in the grass. Then the groups switched so Mrs.Biley’s class could learn about the telescope and learn about the Moon and the history of Yerkes. My favorite part was getting mountain water called Liquid death while learning about the solar eclipse. I hope you enjoyed reading about our trip to Yerkes.
Not All Learning Happens in the Classroom By: Emily Soley-Johnson, Middle/High School Principal
Williams Bay High School has been fortunate enough to offer The Duke of Edinburgh International Award this year to all students in grades 9 - 12. This learning award encourages students to think outside the box and try new things they’ve never done before. The Award has four components: Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills, and an Adventurous Journey. The program is supported by community members who are willing to share their talents to educate our students outside of the classroom. We currently have students working on physical education, volunteering, and work skills. The specific areas include learning about weight lifting, educating others about aerial silks, and learning how to play the guitar. Any student interested in participating should reach out to Emily Soley-Johnson. If your student is interested in preparing to be “#worldready”, we strongly encourage them to learn more about the program.
