The Catawba Two Kings Casino held its official groundbreaking, or MANUU HAR HE WE, which in the Catawba language means “We intend to dig the earth,” at 538 Kings Mountain Blvd. in Kings Mountain on Friday, June 7.

Kathy George, President of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority, welcomed guests and local dignitaries, saying, “What a great day to have you all join us, and what great weather we have. So, thank you to all who dialed that in today.

“A special thank you to our tribal elders, the entire Catawba Nation citizens, the Executive Committee leadership, and the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority Board leaders. In addition, thank you to all of the tribal members who have come before us to pave the way for today, tomorrow, and future generations to come.

She added, “Also, thank you to all of our partners, vendors, and government officials who are with us today or have stood by us throughout the last few years to get us to today. I’d also like to thank our distinguished speakers, who will share a few words with us to help memorialize the day.“Last but cer-

License-Free Fishing Day is July 4

No fishing license is required for anyone who fishes on July 4, 2024 between the hours of 12 a.m.-11:59 p.m., and applies to residents and visitors. Anglers must follow North Carolina fishing regulations, including length and daily possession limits and bait and tackle restrictions. Need equipment? Find out about the Tackle Loaner Program at www.ncwildlife.org/ fishing/fishing-programs.

New Rule Adoptions for 2024-25 Wildlife Commissioners adopted new rules for the 2024-25 seasons effective Aug 1. Among the rules adopted are changes to the Wildlife Poacher Reward Program, deer hunting, game lands and trout water classifications.

Please note: NCWRC has adjusted its annual rulemaking schedule to better align with the General Assembly’s legislative calendar. Proposed rules for the 20252026 seasons were presented during the June 6 meeting, and a virtual public hearing will be held in August. Previously proposed rules were presented in October and adopted in February of the following year with public hearings in January.

License Fee Increase

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is announcing an increase to fees for hunting, fishing, trapping and activity licenses, permits, stamps and cer-

tifications, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024.

Commissioners at their April business meeting adopted the new fee increase rule effective July 1. This rule was then approved by the Rules Review Commission in May. The fee increase rule was presented at a virtual public hearing held in February. NCWRC received input from constituents via email, an online comment portal, mail and at the public hearing. Commissioners carefully reviewed the comments prior to voting.

The fee adjustments are based on the total increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) since the last fee increase (January 1, 2020) and will help the agency with operating costs exacerbated by inflation and increased demand for its services.

The NCWRC is funded by the sale of licenses, vessel titles and registrations, federal grants, general fund appropriations and other receipts. Funds generated from license sales make up, on average, approximately 25% of annual agency revenue. These funds and others are used to support agency programs focused not only on species management and habitat enhancement, but on enforcement, education and public access.

To purchase a license, visit gooutdoorsnorthcarolina.com or a Wildlife Service Agent. Submitted by NCWC

like to welcome the Catawba Men’s Group, who will perform a Calling Song.”

Following the song, George introduced Chief Brian Harris. The Chief welcomed everyone and recognized the Catawba citizens by asking them to stand. He reminded the community of the most recent tribal election, with the most participation in Catawba history.

Chief Brian Harris ran on a platform of change, and he reminded the citizens, “Change is what you got. Not only did we make history with the most citizen turnout, but we also made history in the fact that we elected our first female assistant chief.”

He shared, “It is with great pleasure and pride that I stand before you today on this momentous occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Catawba Indian Nation’s Catawba

Two Kings Casino and Resort. This groundbreaking represents not just the physical construction of the building but the realization of a dream. It’s always been a dream for the Catawba to get out of the shadow of others, to be self-sufficient and self-sustaining. It is one of my jobs, along with the ladies and gentlemen of the executive committee, to create generational wealth to cherish and deserve. And that is what we are doing.

“The establishment of this

casino is a major accomplishment for the Catawba Indian Nation, the residents of Cleveland County, and the City of Kings Mountain. It signifies our ability to come together and create opportunities. Mayor Wagman, we are going to do that, correct? (Mayor Wagman confirmed.)

“As we start the process of building and growing, it’s important to remember the significance of unity, collaboration, and perseverance. Let’s continue working together towards a shared goal of prosperity and success,” he urged.

“And let’s never forget the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us, the legacy we honor today with this groundbreaking ceremony.”

“During the event, Chief Brian Harris acknowledged the presence of Donald J. Trump, Jr., and thanked Donald Trump for his support of the Catawba, as well as many North Carolina and South Carolina politicians who supported them, including Governor Roy Cooper.

Several dignitaries spoke at the event, including Ryan Foxx, Chair of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority; Lou Jacobs, CEO of Delaware North; Mayor of Kings Mountain Rob Wagman; Jason Falls, Business Development Director of Cleveland County; Kevin Gordon, Chairman of the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners; Christine Cribb, President of Cleve-

land County Chamber of Commerce: Nory Hazaveh, Principal of SOSHNY Architects; Chet Nadolski, COO of Yates Construction; and Aaron Thomas President and CEO of Metcon Construction.

During his remarks, Mayor Wagman shared, “It is an honor to represent the city of Kings Mountain on this incredible day. People may not know that I am also Native American from a tribe in northern Wisconsin, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. What I love about the partnership that I have with the Catawba Nation and Chief Brian Harris is that we don’t celebrate things; we celebrate people. So, a groundbreaking is an amazing thing, but more important than the groundbreaking is every person it represents.

Mayor Wagman noted that Kings Mountain is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year by honoring the people who make it a great place to live. He then honored the chief of the tribe with a proclamation from the city, stating that ongoing conversations would continue between the Catawba Nation, the City of Kings Mountain, and Cleveland County.

After reading the proclamation, Mayor Wagman said, “I, Robert C. Wagman, Mayor of Kings Mountain, and an official member of the Red Cliff Band Tribe of Lake Superior Chippewas,

do hereby acknowledge the contributions, communication, friendship, and community impact of Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris.

He continued, “This endeavor is single-handedly allowing the city of Kings Mountain and the County of Cleveland County officials to have conversations we should have had a long time ago. And for that, you deserve a round of applause.

He then explained, “If you have an eagle feather in your car or your garage, you’re going to jail, unless, of course, you are Native American. Native Americans are allowed to gift an Eagle feather to another Native American.

“The impact of the moment that you guys are experiencing is pretty incredible honestly.” Choking back tears, Mayor Wagman continued, “So, from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewas, we would like to give you this feather for the honor, the dignity, your character, and all things that you are.”

After the ceremony, the Friendship Song - Southern Eagle dance, was led by Monty Branham, followed by the AIM Honor Song performed by the Catawba Men’s Group and Southern Eagle Warpaint. The Traveling Song was played, and the event concluded with the Groundbreaking Ceremony.

Right now, I’m craving a quiet float down the river. It’s not the fishing that I’m drawn to. It’s the simplicity of a kayak, the solitude of the surroundings, and the song of the river. An added draw this time of year is that at any moment I can decide to pull the boat to the bank, wade to a spot, and fish for an extended period. Then maybe jump in and take a swim.

The lakes are full of fishermen and recreation boaters. The river is full of life of another kind. So full that it infuses it into those who float against its breeze. The early mornings are my favorite. The fog that lifts from its waters is nothing less than God slowly unveiling His latest unique masterpiece. To expose it too quickly would overwhelm us and cause us to miss the beauty of each distinctive curve and line. The water that passes will never be here again. Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed times of competition on the lake. There’s nothing I know of that encapsulates everything a man loves more than a fishing tournament. There’s the outdoors, the fishing, the competition, and the prize for success. It really is a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. Competition, however, is a word that is left in the truck at the river ramp. Words like rewind and reflect are river words. Even repentance is welcome on the river. Because it’s there one changes his mind about lots of things. I’ve just noticed this whole article is sounding probably a little too abstract and philosophical. More evidence I just need to gather my gear, head to the river, and go fishing. And while I’ll enjoy all the introspection when I get there, I’ll be a little disappointed if I don’t catch any fish. See you soon.

What: ARRL Ham Radio Field Day

When: June 23.

Where: Cleveland Co. Fairgrounds, 1751 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC.

More Info: Groups across the continent use Field Day as a literal “show and tell” exhibition. At sites from the tundra of Alaska to the sandy beaches of Puerto Rico, amateur radio brings together its resources to show officials in government and various agencies what “amateur radio can do.” ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, thousands of radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar. The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions.

(Part 3 of “Pride” Series)

In this digital age, it’s nearly impossible to walk down the street, sit in a café, or even attend a family gathering without encountering someone snapping a selfie. The allure of capturing that perfect moment, showcasing our best angles, and sharing it with the world is undeniable. I, too, find joy in taking selfies, especially when surrounded by friends and loved ones. The ability to enhance these moments with a filter adds a fun twist, allowing us to present an idealized version of ourselves on social media. However, the prevalence of selfies, particularly among teenagers, serves as a mirror to our society’s growing obsession

with self-image. We’ve become a generation fixated on self. The Bible, in its timeless wisdom, warns us about this very mindset. In 2 Timothy 3:2-5 (ESV), we read a sobering description: “For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without selfcontrol, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

True Fulfillment

It’s easy to get caught up in the allure of social media, where likes and comments can give us a fleeting sense of validation. However, true fulfillment comes from aligning our lives with the teachings of

Christ, a life marked by kindness, compassion, and humility. Furthermore, as we enjoy social media, we must remember to use these platforms responsibly and with a heart that seeks to honor God. We have the opportunity to share our joys, achievements, and moments with others while also promoting messages of hope, encouragement, and faith. Our online presence can be a tool for spreading the gospel and demonstrating the impact of God’s love in our lives. Colossians 3:17 (AMP) says, “Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER: Father, because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. Lord, please forgive me for being self-focused instead of Christ

focused. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. I am not. I bow myself to your will and your ways. When I am weak, give me the strength to deny myself, take up my cross and follow you. Please send like-minded people my way, who want to live for you and build your kingdom. I love you.

In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

Wildlife Law Enforcement enhance efforts to reduce impaired boating during July 4

Operation Dry Water aims to prevent alcohol-and drugrelated boating incidents

In efforts to ensure a safer July 4 holiday experience on the water, wildlife law enforcement officers with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) will participate in Operation Dry Water, a national campaign being observed July 4-6, developed through the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

The focus of the campaign is to heighten enforcement and awareness about the dangers of boating while impaired. Wildlife officers will be increasing water patrols, providing boaters with information on the dangers of impaired boating and enforcing state laws.

“This is one of the busiest weekends for boaters every year. The presence of law enforcement officers in North Carolina is

a key factor in preventing incidents from occurring or escalating,” said Lt. Forrest Orr, of the NCWRC's Law Enforcement Division.

“The Operation Dry Water campaign is an effective resource in providing safer boating opportunities, keeping boating safety at the forefront of holiday activities.”

It is unlawful to operate a recreational vessel with an alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, or while being appreciably impaired by alcohol, drugs or other impairing substances. During last year’s campaign, NCWRC wildlife law enforcement officers deployed 159 officers and removed 40 people from

Officials also stress the importance of other boating safety practices while on the water. So far this year, 37 boating incidents have occurred in North Carolina; seven were fatal. Wildlife law enforcement officers urge boaters to boat responsibly. Last year in North Carolina, boating incidents resulted in 19 fatalities. Of those, 17 were not wearing a life jacket.

ALWS General Admission Tickets Available Now

Prices for general admission tickets that cover all 15 games of the 2024 American Legion World Series will remain at $35, the price established in 2011. The general admission tickets are on sale now!

“We have always aimed for pricing that fits most people’s budgets and allows them to attend all the games,” says local Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “Prices for all of our reserved seats will hold steady also, as well as those for day passes.”

General admission tickets are available through the ALWS office at 117-A West Warren Street or via the website at www.alws.us.

The ALWS staff informed reserved seat, box seat and rocking chair seat holders in January that the seats they purchased in 2023 would

be available for them until a deadline set in early May. After that deadline, any seats not purchased are offered to people on a waiting list.

The ALWS games are scheduled for Thursday – Tuesday, Aug. 15-20, with the first game at 10:00 AM Aug. 15. Ticket sales have grown substantially since Shelby became the official home of the tournament in 2011. In 2022, ticket sales reached 132,804 – the most tickets ever sold for an ALWS tournament.

Sugar substitute linked to possible strokes and heart attacks

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic announced that they discovered that higher amounts of the popular sugar substitute alcohol xylitol are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Dr. Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., led the team that confirmed this association through extensive patient analysis, preclinical research models, and a clinical intervention study. The findings were published on June 6 in the European Heart Journal.

used in other countries.

Xylitol, a common sugar substitute, is frequently used in sugar-free candy, gums, and baked goods. It is used as an additive and boasts up to 40% fewer calories. Over the past decade, sugar substitutes, including sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, have surged in foods marketed as healthy alternatives.

While, Xylitol is commonly used as a sweetener in processed foods and can also be found in dental care products like toothpaste and mouthwash. While it may help prevent cavities, elevated blood levels of xylitol have been associated with heightened platelet reactivity and cardiovascular events.

Dr. Hazen’s team previously linked erythritol, another sugar alcohol, to cardiovascular risks last year. Although xylitol is less common than erythritol in keto or sugar-free products in the U.S., it is widely

“This study again shows the immediate need for investigating sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, especially as they continue to be recommended in combatting conditions like obesity or diabetes,” said Dr. Hazen, Chair of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and Co-Section Head of Preventive Cardiology in the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. “It does not mean throw out your toothpaste if it has xylitol in it, but we should be aware that consumption of a product containing high levels could increase the risk of blood clot related events.”

The research analyzed over 3,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe, finding that high levels of circulating xylitol were linked to an elevated three-year risk of cardiovascular events. A third of the patients with the highest plasma xylitol levels were more likely to experience such events. Pre-clinical tests showed that xylitol caused platelets to clot, increasing the risk of thrombosis. The researchers also found that platelet activity significantly increased in people who ingested a xylitol-sweetened drink compared to a glucose-sweetened drink.

The authors stress that further studies are necessary to assess the long-term cardiovascular safety of xylitol. They caution that

clinical observation studies show association, not causation, and recommend consulting a doctor or certified dietitian for personalized dietary advice.

This study is part of Dr. Hazen’s ongoing research into factors contributing to residual cardiovascular risk. His team identifies chemical signatures in blood that can predict the development of heart and metabolic diseases over time. Dr. Hazen has made pioneering discoveries in atherosclerosis and inflammatory disease research, including linking gut microbial pathways to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Dr. Hazen also directs Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Microbiome and Human Health.

Pinnacle Classical Academy archery team soars at state championships

Pinnacle Classical Academy hosted the North Carolina Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) state championships on June 8.

The PCA Thunderbirds archery team was the runner up in the elementary division and won the state championship in the high school division.

PCA students Ryleigh Dellinger, Anzlee Kilby, and Emma Gladden finished in first place in individual competitions; Brylee Gladden, Duncan Pittillo, Dinah Gladden, Mackenzie Glenn, and Hunter Gladden finished in second place; and Savannah Mikell, Heather Carswell, and Aidyn Smith finished in third place. All high school students who received awards in individual competitions also received scholarships.

"We are so proud of our student-athletes for their dedication, skill, and sportsmanship," said Dr. Shelly Shope, the school's headmaster. "Some of our graduates have received significant archery scholarships that have helped pay for college. We are grateful for the hard work of archery coach Todd Tongel, who consistently fields award-winning teams."

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3 mini loaf pans.

• Mix flour, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
