CVII serves vital community need - with a smile

Busy hands, happy hearts, and loving souls. That triad of virtues is a good way to describe the work that goes on every day at Cleveland Vocational Industries, Inc. (CVII) located at 650 N. Post Rd., Shelby.

CVII’s motto “We believe that all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are defined by their own strengths, abilities and inherent value...not their disability”, defines the work that goes on there and serves as a guidepost for its mission of uplifting, educating, and employing folks with a wide range of physical and mental challenges to be the best they can be.

Will Mabry has been CVII executive director for over two years but his involvement there goes back to 2012 when he joined the board of directors. He is passionate about CVII and his work.

“I have always been interested in people with intellectual and developmental challenges,” Mabry said. Mabry explained exactly what goes on at CVII.

“We offer a variety of services to address the needs of adults in the abled community who face barriers to employment,” he said. “Our mission is to provide training and employment opportunities, as well as assistance with social, coping, and daily living skills.

Based on individual needs and desires, associates may be provided with classroom training emphasizing personal and social adjustment, job seeking and maintenance skills, personal grooming and hygiene, and communication skills.

Supported employment services are offered when an individual shows the aptitude for outside competitive employment but needs the support of a one-

on-one worker to be successful in their new role. Supported employment includes activities needed to sustain paid work including supervision and training and is a paid position at minimum wage or higher.

We teach how to work, how to communicate with others, how to take care of your personal needs, and how to get along in your community more independently. Associates will determine goals to work towards while participating in See CVII, Page 10

Summer fun for active seniors

Seniors may

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults age 65 and older get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. There are plenty of ways for active seniors to meet this exercise goal and have some fun along the way. The following are some good starting points.

• Join or start a walking club. Walking is a great way to stay in shape and work the mind as well. View new sights along the way by changing the route each time you go. Walking with friends can pass the time and provide the motivation to keep going.

• Take a fishing charter. Casting a rod from a dock or pier is perfectly acceptable, but securing a spot on a fishing charter is a great way to spend hours out on the water enjoying the scenery and the sport of fishing. Plus, there’s the added benefit of enjoying the fruits of your labors by cooking the day’s catch for dinner once you arrive home.

• Be a tourist. Many cities and towns have their own tourism boards and showcase interesting spots that have historical significance or appeal to other interests. Be a tourist for the day — even in an area with which you are familiar. Hop on a trolley or sightseeing bus to view the town as an outsider.

• Spend time swimming. Swimming is a low-impact activity that can work the body in many different ways. Devote time to doing a few laps in the pool. Or make a day of going to a lake or another body of water to wade out and enjoy some strokes in nature. Stick to swimming areas that are

monitored by lifeguards for optimal safety.

• Tend to a garden. Gardening is a great form of light exercise that can produce rewarding results. If you don’t have a garden or enough space for one at home, many neighborhoods have community gardens in which you can secure a plot.

• Visit a fair or farmer’s market. The warm weather months are a peak time for outdoor activities, including various community fairs and farmer’s markets. Chances are you can find a farmer’s market nearby most days of the week, but especially on the weekend. A town market or state fair is a great way to get out and walk, play games of chance or enjoy some live entertainment. Check your community calendar for local events.

Active seniors can embrace long, warm summer days to enjoy plenty of time away from home.

In the early morning of November 4th volunteers set up, registered anglers, and successfully launched the Annual Eaton / SONC annual Fishing Tournament for Cleveland County Special Olympics NC at Lake Norman. The event was made possible by a large group of volunteers and local area sponsors to make this event a success. With 111 boats in the water, and prizes for biggest catch and weigh in awarded for the top 30 catches, the event raised over $46,000.00 for Cleveland

County SONC. This funding will support state competition travel costs, uniform updates and sporting equipment needs for our athletes.

A special Thanks to Rick Peace and Eaton Corporation for their planning and continuous work to make this fundraiser possible.

The event would not have been possible without the sponsorship of the following businesses and individuals: A

The turkeys are gobbling the woods down. Their call is one of the most recognizable in all of nature. Whether one is a turkey hunter or not, everyone knows this familiar sound. And even though a tom turkey will gobble the entire year, he is especially vocal during the spring mating season. The turkey is an amazing bird. Just a few years ago there were so few, most hunters turned into fishermen during the spring. Now, the turkey is in every state except Alaska. And not only are they surviving, they are thriving. The reintroduction of the turkey has been a great success story for fish and game commissions all over the country. There has been a concerted effort between them, some conservation groups like the NWTF, and the turkey themselves. Yes, the turkey has really done its part in this process as well. They have adapted. It seems no matter what type of terrain the turkey is placed in, it adapts. It seems to have the ability to accept its environment and make it its own. It doesn’t care if it is placed in the mountains or the flatlands, in the cold temperature or hot. It is going to not only endure its situation; it is going to enjoy it.

That’s how I want to be as a follower of Christ. I want to be an “enjoying” Christian and not just an “enduring” one. And it’s really not up to anyone or anything but me. All my life, my circumstances have changed. I have noticed as I have gotten older that nothing stays the same. It seems just as I get a grasp on some new thing, it is replaced by a newer thing. I could grumble, complain, long for the good ole days, refuse to change, and endure the rest of my life as a cantankerous old man. Or I can choose to relish the opportunity to learn, be thankful for the opportunity to live in this new arena, adapt, and enjoy every minute I am blessed to be here. That is an easy decision for me. I hope it will be for you. But if you choose the former, don’t be surprised if I offer you a kind word of hello, and then promptly back away. I’m not going to stay around long. I’d much rather hang with a flock of turkeys that are enjoying life, than stay around a grumbling group of people that are not.

Webbstock returns to GWU April 20

Webbstock ’24 is less than a month away, and the event has all the ingredients for a family fun day. Gardner-Webb and the Town of Boiling Springs are making plans to showcase talented regional musicians along with a tasty variety of food and unique items for sale by artists and crafters. Main Street will come alive on Saturday, April 20, with free performances in the Brinkley Amphitheater and the Main Street stage. The festival opens at 11 a.m., and the first band performs at 1 p.m.

The vendor list already has over 20 participants, and more continue to be added each week. The lineup includes favorites from previous years, as well as new artisans and food trucks.

Performers on the Main Street stage:

• 1 p.m.: Java Band –These musicians have a versatile style that includes jazz standards, rock, Motown/beach, R&B, hip hop,

and country. They perform all over the U.S., delighting audiences with their energy, creativity, knowledge, and attitude.

• 5 p.m.: Exit 180 – A band formed by a group of guys with the same vision and purpose: Play authentic rock, classic and southern rock, as well as familiar country songs that inspire people to dance and sing along. They feature sounds, from acoustic and electric guitars to keyboards and multi-part harmonies. Their song list covers a wide range of artists that audiences know and recognize easily.

Guests on the Brinkley Amphitheater stage:

• 3 p.m.: Cassette Rewind—Born in the ‘80s and raised on radio, Cassette Rewind is the ultimate authentic ’80s experience, featuring dynamic perfor-

mances by Prince, George Michael, Journey, Whitney Houston, and other ’80s pop icons.

• 7 p.m.: LANDSLIDE (A tribute to Fleetwood Mac)—This group takes audiences back in time to an era when the greatest rock music was being made and the careers of the legends were born.

LANDSLIDE recreates the hits from yesteryear, taking fans on an electric journey through Fleetwood Mac’s incredible catalog of music, including the hits from their solo careers.

A variety of musical talents will entertain throughout the afternoon and evening. The bands will play music from several genres, and the evening concert features songs from the legendary Fleetwood Mac. Main Street will be

closed to traffic from College Avenue to Branch Street during the event, creating a vibrant and safe space for all. In addition to the live music that will fill the air, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. A free kids’ zone on the lawn in front of GWU’s Noel Hall, unique items for sale by local artisans and other vendors, and a range of specialty food options will keep you entertained and satisfied. For those 21 and older, the Broad River Greenway will host a beverage garden in the parking lot that serves downtown businesses.

the program and we will assist associates in reaching their goals.

We help associates learn life skills including appropriate work habits, specific job skills, selfhelp skills, socialization skills, and communication skills. We offer people an opportunity to work if they could not be hired in a competitive environment. We give them meaning, purpose, and socialization.”

According to Mabry, CVII has between 75-80 associates at any given time. Associates are referred to CVII by parents, guardians, Medicaid, and state agencies. Associates range in age from 25 to 81 years with the majority in the 40–50-year-old range.

Staff members number around 38 full-time and 18-20 part-time.

“Most are paraprofessionals trained to work with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities,” he said.

Staff members enjoy the CVII environment as well. Regina Bright has worked there for over 20 years.

“I love it,” she said. “It’s a rewarding job that teaches many life lessons.”

Volunteers are always welcome at CVII.

“If you believe in humanity and the Golden Rule, this is a place to be part of,” Mabry said.

On the facility side of things, CVII moved into its current 60k sq. ft. building in 1998. The structure includes offices, a cavernous work area, a spacious lunch-

room, classrooms, and storage space. The walls are decorated with artwork done by associates and signage offering uplifting messages. The overall atmosphere is one of encouragement and hope.

The actual work that associates perform there varies but can include gathering bits and pieces and packaging them into assembly kits, placing labels on tape rolls and boxing them up, or making roof truss packages. Most of the jobs require a fair degree of manual dexterity and organizational skill.

While they work, associates socialize. Phillip Wright, 51, has been a CVII associate for over ten years.

“I like coming here,” he said.

Ann Payne is a threeyear associate.

“It is a good place to work and earn money,” she said. “I learn new things too.”

It takes considerable funding to keep CVII going.

“CVII is a non-profit,” said Mabry. “The annual budget is between $1.8 million to $2 million. We are funded by state Medicaid and some fed-

eral Medicaid.”

Some money also comes in from the CVII operated Alli’s Cafe at 891 N. Post Rd. It also serves as a training center for CVII associates to learn about and try different jobs in the restaurant industry. Associates work with and under the supervision of full-time staff or job coaches while at Alli’s. The café is open Monday – Friday 7:30am – 2:00pm to the public Monday through Friday, serving breakfast and lunch.

Overall, CVII is a unique oasis of loving kindness mixed with practical employment opportunity that fills an ongoing need.

“There are about 100 thousand people in Cleveland County, six to eight percent of which have some form of IDD (intellectual and developmental disabilities),” said Mabry. “We offer a unique service that gives them hope and self-esteem. I cannot ever see a time when we would not be needed.”

To learn more, visit www.cvii.org and see how CVII benefits, not just the IDD community, but all the citizens of Cleveland County.

Seeds of Faith

(Part 2 of “Spring Forward ” Series)

Just as seeds are planted in the ground during the spring season to reap a harvest of beautiful flowers or vegetables, it is important for believers to sow seeds that will produce the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:2223 (NIV), “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” When we intentionally sow seeds of love, joy and peace etc., we will reap a harvest of blessings in our relationships, attitudes, and actions. The fruit of the Spirit benefits us individually and also others around us as

we reveal Christ in the way we walk, talk, live and give.

WATER YOUR FAITH

As Christians, it is vital for us to nurture our faith in order to grow in our spiritual walk. Just as a seed needs water, sun, and nutrients to grow into a healthy plant, our faith requires constant care and attention in order to flourish and bear fruit. This can be achieved through prayer, studying God’s word, attending church regularly, and surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who can offer support and encouragement. Galatians 6:9 (AMP ) encourages us, “Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.” Our faith and efforts will bear fruit in due time, if we remain steadfast and unwavering in our beliefs.

is extremely small, only measuring 1-2 millimeters in diameter, the mature tree can reach heights of 20-30 feet and have branches and leaves that extend up to 20 feet in circumference. The greatness of the mustard tree lies not in its height, but in the remarkable width of its branches. In Luke 17:6 (ESV), “And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” This scripture emphasizes the incredible potential of faith. Our faith has the ability to grow and to be so great that it will move mountains. So, let us be intentional about sowing seeds of faith in our lives, trusting in God’s promises and remaining steadfast in our devotion to Him. As we nurture our faith and cultivate a deep and abiding relationship with God, we will reap a bountiful harvest of spiritual growth, strength, and joy.

PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I praise you for

giving me a measure of faith. Forgive me for doubt and unbelief. Help me to grow and be strong in my faith. Lead and guide me to the people, places and material that will nurture my faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.

For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who areasleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

I Thessalonians 4:15-19

• In a small bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form. Sprinkle dry pudding mix over cream and whip until stiff. Pipe around edge of pie or dollop on individual slices.

FRESH STRAWBERRY CAKE

2 eggs

•Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until top springs back when lightly touched.

• In separate bowl, combine: flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add melted butter and stir well until well coated and crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the top of the strawberries.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until fruit is bubbly and topping is golden brown.
