Foothills Quilters Guild meets monthly at Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The members come together to share their love of quilting. They are here to learn, teach and encourage anyone who also shares that love. The group gladly welcomes new members from Shelby and surrounding areas.

The group truly believes in supporting Cleveland County through a number of community service projects. In 2023 they made and donated 143 quilts that went to Oncology patients at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute in Shelby, Wendover Hospice in Shelby and Foster children in both private and state run homes in Shelby. Their pillowcase project is a major one for them. The 600 pillowcases shown in the pictures will soon go to Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. The quilts underneath the pillowcases will be given to

Oncology patients in Shelby.

This is a year round project but the group manages to finish about 100 pillowcases during their annual two day Community Service Sewing Marathon. Every February they come together on a Friday and Saturday to finish as many projects as possible. Some members are piecing quilt blocks, others putting lap quilts together and still others are sewing pillowcases. They distribute quilts throughout the year but the pillowcases they hold onto until after the Christmas holidays are over. They are then washed, ironed and delivered to Charlotte.

Projects like these are made possible by continued community support. This year the Guild was fortunate that Mountain Wash Laundry in Shelby donated their services to wash and dry all of their pillowcases. The group is grateful and can’t thank them enough for all the time

HOME GARDEN & H D M RD R O A AR ARD OM Guide

and effort they put into this project.

The price of quality fabric has risen to $10-12 a yard. One pillowcase is 1 yard of fabric. They buy a lot of fabric! All of this wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the grant money received from the Dover Foundation and private individuals who contribute, like H&H Pest Control and Sandy’s Country Christmas.

In addition to these projects the group provided 115 kennel pads to Cleveland County Animal Shelter, 129 hats for newborns at Atrium Health Cleveland Shelby, 50 hats

for women in Oncology and 68 port pillows for Oncology, Shelby. All this keeps them very busy.

Foothills Quilters Guild is a 501 (c) (3) Charitable Organization, and they gladly accept any donations.

Wake Forest University to play Appalachian State University in Shelby

Admission is free for the Jim Horn Tribute game

The American Legion World Series (ALWS) Executive Committee will present a college baseball game at Keeter Stadium, the home field of the ALWS, on Tuesday, April 30. The game between the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Appalachian State University Mountaineers is scheduled for 6:00 PM with free admission. Wake Forest Head Coach Tom Walter is giving up one of the university’s home games to host the game as a tribute to the late Jim Horn. Horn, a Wake Forest graduate who played football and baseball, was a member of the college’s 1955 national championship baseball team. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 82 team that won the 1951 state championship.

Horn served as co-chairman with Eddie Holbrook of the local ALWS committee from 2002 until Horn’s death in 2015, the fifth year with Keeter Stadium as the home field for the ALWS.

Jim Horn and his wife Linda were both volunteers for the ALWS from the initial work to bring the series to Shelby. Linda Horn still volunteers and spearheads the preparations for the April 30 game.

“It is an honor to welcome Coach Walter and his team to Shelby again,” says ALWS Executive Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “He has been a strong supporter of the ALWS for years. He is generous in giving us a home game to celebrate Jim Horn.

There’s nothing like the sound of a gobble at daylight. If you’re close enough, it seems that it reverberates throughout the hollows and ridges. It will truly make you wide awake like nothing else. The method most of us use to cause a tom to gobble is by using some kind of shock call. For the non-turkey hunters, a shock call is simply a loud noise that is made that causes a gobbler to react to the sound by gobbling. There are also other calls that are used like an owl hoot. I’m not totally sure but I think the turkey despises the old hoot owl so much that when they hear one, they just fuss back at it by gobbling. But whether you shock one or owl hoot or crow call, the results are the same; a turkey is located.

It seems to me the old gobbler is a cantankerous bird. When something unexpected happens, he fusses. When some other creature wants to sing out, he fusses. When something is different or interrupts his normal routine, he fusses. But what he doesn’t realize is that by his responses and reactions he lets everyone know where he is. And in turkey hunting that’s good for the hunter and not good for him. He sort of reminds me of some people I know. They are fine when everything goes their way and when everything is as it should be, and when there are no unexpected interruptions or unplanned circumstances. But when something happens out of the ordinary, they fuss and complain. It may be the clerk at the grocery store who smashes his bread or the waitress at the restaurant who gets his order wrong, but again, the results are the same. What he doesn’t realize is that by his actions he is letting everyone know where he is. He is telling the world around him that what you see might not be what you get. He is telling everyone what is really inside. I think he forgets about his own imperfections and his own mental lapses. He seems to demand more from others than he does from himself. I hope you’re not that way because the true test of Christian character is not how we act during the expected but how we react when we are shocked by the unexpected.

New plants can add much to a landscape. Whether they’re replacing plants that are no longer thriving or being added to supplement an existing landscape, new plants are an affordable way to give a home’s exterior a whole new look.

• Document sunlight exposure. Plants have different needs, and one of the biggest differences between species is the amount of sunlight they need to thrive. According to Penn State Extension, plants characterized as “full sun” require six or more hours of sunlight per day, while those considered “partial sun” need between four and six hours of sunlight per day. Plants designated as “partial shade” need two to four hours of sun per day, while “shade” plants need less than two hours of sunlight a day. Documenting sunlight exposure in advance gives homeowners an idea of which

plants should be planted and where they should be planted. Jot down these observations in a journal over several weeks and then choose plants that will thrive in each area.

• Test the soil. A soil pH test is a simple and quick way to determine the acidity of soil. Soil pH levels will indicate how likely a plant is to thrive in a given spot. High levels won’t necessarily mean an area should be avoided, as some plants thrive in acidic soils. Additional soil testsa can determine other characteristics, such as the nutrient levels of soil and the amount of organic matter it contains. Each of these variables can help homeowners make the right choices as they introduce new plants to their properties.

• Consider local wildlife. If local wildlife makes its presence known on a property, homeowners may want to take proactive steps prior to planting anything new. A new

fence might prevent animals like deer from getting in, but that likely won’t do much to repel smaller animals like squirrels, rabbits or foxes. If wildlife is a concern, homeowners can seek advice at their local garden center about which plants certain animals are likely to ignore. Homeowners who want to attract wildlife can do the same in reverse, choosing plants wildlife will be drawn to. Homeowners who want to deter wildlife should erect fencing or other barriers prior to planting.

• Clear space if necessary. Plants grow up and out, and cramped quarters can make it hard for new plants to thrive. Some may thrive but only at the expense of other plants. If necessary, clear space prior to planting to ensure plants have ample space to grow.

Some pre-planting landscape preparation can ensure new plants thrive.

Tips to revitalize a garden this spring Tips for budget friendly home decor

Home interiors can be spruced up in a number of ways. Ideas run the gamut from relatively inexpensive changes in paint color to more extensive (and expensive) remodels that may include demolition and reconstruction. Investing in new home decor is another way to breathe new life into spaces, and this approach that falls somewhere in the middle in regard to cost.

Material and product costs remain high across the board, so individuals interested in changing the furniture and other design elements in their homes might be seeking ways to do so in the most affordable way possible. In such instances, homeowners can try these budgetfriendly ways to overhaul their home decor.

• Create the illusion of more space. Light, bright and white are key attributes to remember when selecting design elements for rooms where you want to create the illusion of more square footage. Painting the walls in very light colors, increasing natural and artificial light, including using well-placed mirrors to reflect light, and decorating with lightcolored fabrics can help a space seem more roomy.

• Replace the accessories. Replacing curtains, area rugs, throw pillows, and chair cushions is an easy way to change a room without a big investment. Consider updating some wall art and tying color

schemes together with all of the newly introduced elements.

• Splurge on statement pieces that will be used frequently. These may include chandeliers, unique rugs or an eyecatching piece of furniture.

• Shop ‘discount’ stores for furniture and accents.

Traditional design centers can be great places to find plenty of high-quality merchandise. However, don’t overlook local discount or close-out centers that may have items at very reasonable costs. Stores like Home Goods, At Home and Big Lots routinely get new merchandise that changes with the season, helping homeowners to refresh their spaces without having to dig deep into their pockets. Shop the highend stores for inspiration, then try to find “dupes” in the discount stores that will mimic the looks for less.

• Cut out the clutter. Modern homes are lean and clean. A home’s interior instantly looks more highend and appealing when the clutter is removed.

Consider keeping main living areas free from too many knickknacks and other accents. If you want to display a special collection, set aside a room specifically for such items.

There are many budgetfriendly ways to make interior spaces more inviting.

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that pays a host of significant dividends. Many people love gardening because it allows them to spend time outdoors, and that simple pleasure is indeed a notable benefit of working in a garden. But the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture notes that gardening provides a host of additional benefits, including helping people get sufficient levels of exercise, reduce stress and improve mood. With so much to gain from gardening, it’s no wonder people look forward to getting their hands dirty in the garden each spring. As the weather warms up, consider these tips to help bring a garden back to life.

• Discard the dead weight. Winter can take its toll on a garden, even in regions where the weather between December and early spring is not especially harsh. Discard dead plants that have lingered into spring and prune any perennials that need it. Branches that fell during winter storms also should be removed at this point if they have not previously been discarded.

• Test the soil. Soil testing kits can be purchased at local garden centers and home improvement retailers. Such tests are inexpensive and can reveal if the soil needs to be amended to help plants thrive in the months to come.

• Mulch garden beds. Mulching benefits a garden by helping soil retain moisture and preventing the growth of weeds. Various garden experts note that mulching in spring can prevent weed seeds from

germinating over the course of spring and summer. That means plants won’t have to fight with weeds for water when the temperature warms up. It also means gardeners won’t have to spend time pulling weeds this summer.

• Inspect your irrigation system. Homeowners with in-ground irrigation systems or above-ground systems that utilize a drip or soaker function can inspect the systems before plants begin to bloom. Damaged sprinkler heads or torn lines can deprive plants of water they will need to bloom and ultimately thrive once the weather warms up.

• Tune up your tools. Gardening tools have likely been sitting around gathering dust since fall. Serious gardeners know that tools can be expensive, so it pays to protect that investment by maintaining the tools. Sharpened pruners help make plants less vulnerable to infestation and infection. Well-maintained tools like shovels and hoes also make more demanding gardening jobs a little bit easier, so don’t forget to tune up your tools before the weather warms up.

It’s almost gardening season, which means gardeners can start on the necessary prep work to ensure their gardens grow in strong and beautiful this spring.
