Veteran Stability Initiative to hold winter clothing giveaways
By Alan Hodge
The Veteran Stability Initiative organization has two winter clothing giveaway events dubbed “Operation Winter Relief” coming up on December 4th and 6th. On the 4th, winter gear will be available for pickup in Shelby at Trailhead Resources, 318 Gidney St. In Kings Mountain on December 6th, the event will be at The Marketplace, 405 S. Battleground Ave. from 11am to 9pm.
Items folks can avail themselves to include coats, jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, and more. The articles are not reserved just for veterans but are available to anyone in need.
A significant number of articles were lovingly handcrafted and donated by Shelby’s Loops of Love crochet group. The colorful and cozy collection of scarves, hats, gloves, and socks filled a huge bag.

Shelby PD Capt. Chris Flowers talked about the role the department plays not just in Operation Winter Relief but in other similar endeavors.
“I think Operation Winter Relief is awesome,” Flowers said. “The department has always been community-driven. We want to serve in a capacity connecting resources to those in need and are happy to do it.”
So, what is Veteran Stability Initiative? It’s a group that was founded in 2023 by U.S. Army veteran Martin Kemp to help other veterans adjust to the challenges of returning to civilian life.
He drew inspiration and determination from his own experiences coming home after combat service in Afghanistan
“I know first-hand how hard it can be to start your life over from scratch after service, and how hard it can be to get to a
my brothers’ lives could have turned out very differently if they knew of all the services available to help them. I also witnessed other veterans having trouble transitioning to the civilian market when they left the military,” he said. “So, after working with veterans in different organizations I decided to
tive. My whole idea behind the organization is instead of waiting for the government to help, it is better to help each other. That way, more people get helped.”
The upcoming winter gear giveaway is just one thing that Veteran Stability Initiative has been involved in locally. In 2024, Kemp and volunteers loaded a pickup truck with supplies for Hurricane Helene victims.
“We collected and purchased items in Shelby,” Kemp
said. “We took them to a church in Black Mountain that was set up as a distribution center.” Other ways that Veteran Stability Initiative has pitched in includes helping with resume building and job interview skills. See CLOTHING, Page 11

The Overflow
(4th &
There is something powerful about a heart that overflows with gratitude. Not the kind that shows up only on holidays or during highlight reel moments, but the kind that bubbles up from deep within, even when life feels ordinary or difficult. David understood this kind of gratitude when he wrote in Psalm 23:5 (ESV), “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” He was not talking about a season without trouble. He was talking about a shepherd who never stopped being good. Overflowing gratitude is not accidental. It is cultivated. It grows when we decide to look for God no matter what we are going through.
GOD’S BLESSINGS
God never asked us to create our own blessings. He simply asks us to recognize them. James 1:17 (ESV) says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down
from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” When we acknowledge God as the giver, our hearts naturally shift from scarcity to abundance. We begin to see how full our cup truly is. Maybe it is not overflowing with what we expected, but it is overflowing with what God knows we need: strength for today, peace that steadies, grace that meets us at our weakest, and love that never lets go.
CONTAGIOUS
The overflow life is contagious. A grateful person becomes a light in dark places. In Colossians 4:6 (ESV) Paul wrote, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought
to answer each person.” That is exactly what gratitude does. It softens our words. It sweetens our tone. We complain less. We give freely, love deeply, and serve joyfully. Our lives begin to shine with a quiet and steady radiance that reflects him. A thankful heart does not just receive blessings, it becomes one. So as you enter this season of thanksgiving, ask God to fill your cup again, so full that it spills over into your family, your friendships, your work, your worship, and your everyday moments. Let gratitude become your overflow, your offering, and your way of saying, “God, You have been good, and I want the world to see it.”
Happy Thanksgiving!
Let’s Pray: “Father, every time I look around, I see all the wonderful ways you have been good to me. Thank you. Forgive
me for self-centeredness. Lord, let gratitude overflow from my life. Make me a living reminder of your kindness and grace, so that others can taste and see that you are good in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

By Gary Miller
One of the conditions that hunters must face this time of year is the fog. Sometimes it lingers seemingly all day making it difficult to see, especially when hunting with firearms. And then there’s the drive to the hunt. Just seeing each turn can sometimes be almost impossible without some type of marker. This is the case at one of my hunting locations. Over the years I have marked a particular turn by a light. While driving down the road this light creates an illusion that it is in the middle of the road. If there’s no fog, I can see it for at least a mile away. I simply drive to it and then make the turn. It makes everything easy. When there’s a thick fog, this makes it more difficult because now I have to be close to it before I see it. And I have passed it up a few times. The key is slowing down, locating the light, and heading in the right direction.
Sometimes my life seems like I’m living in a fog. Rarely do my directions seem clear and knowing which way to go is difficult to discern. The problem is just like my attempt at hunting; I sometimes forget to slow down and locate the markers that give me the help I need. I instead complain about uncertainty or God’s lack of communication and continue to barrel down the road without adjusting for this fog I’m now in. The truth is, when these conditions show up in my life, I cannot continue to travel as I have been. I must make the necessary adjustments in order that I don’t miss the turn I need to take. The light that marks my way is still there. He is as sure and stable as any marker we might have in our life. But sometimes we must approach slowly, linger longer, and move toward our change of direction with a greater focus on the turn.
Are you living in a fog right now? Have you uttered complaints about the seeming lack of God’s guidance? Are you getting ready to make a move even though you are unsure about the direction? Maybe you need to slow down. The light is still there, but in the fog you’ll have to draw a little closer before you see it. But when you do, you’ll discover this was precisely the reason for the fog – not to hide His will, but to bring you nearer to the One who gives it.

GARY MILLER
Forest City native, Roy Costner, son of Mary Sandra Costner of Forest City, is bringing a new Christmas Show to the Don Gibson Theater in Shelby on Saturday, Nov. 29. Costner serves as the board chair of the nonprofit South Carolina Entertainment and Music Hall of Fame and is bringing the Coast to Coast Christ-
mas band to Shelby. “When I was growing up in Forest City and riding my bike from Cool Springs to wait on my mom at her job at the Mooneyham Public Library, or singing in the choir at First Presbyterian Church (and the Youth Choir at First Baptist), or trying to survive Mrs. (Nancy) Stallcup’s class at East High School, I never imagined that my life’s journey would lead me to become the Chairman of the South Carolina and Entertainment Hall of Fame,” Costner said.
“We have been touring throughout the state and are now branching out to the Southeast,” Costner said.” As the year 2025 closes out, we are doing four Christmas Shows including the show at the Don Gibson theater in Shelby.”
“ I have been bragging that we will most likely sell out that show simply because of everyone I knew growing up in Rutherford County and all of my family who live there and in Cleveland County. At least, I really hope we do and that people haven’t forgotten
about me,” Costner quipped. A staff of 15 people is required to produce the show. Costner also created and wrote the show for the Casey Kasem Top 40 Countdown Experience and concept was tested a year ago and it proved to be a tremendous success. The show features the voice of Casey Kasem (recreated by Hall of Fame member Howard Hudson from the former Love and Hudson Morning show on WMYI) and a live band playing the top hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
The South Carolina Entertainment and Music Hall of Fame was founded in 1989 by the State of SC Entertainment and Music Commissioner Dr. David Godbold and SC Secretary of State Jim Miles. The nonprofit developed for the purpose of honoring South Carolina natives or those with South Connections that have achieved national success. Originally housed in different venues across the state, the SC Entertainment and Music HOF found a permanent home in Georgetown, S.C. In September of 2013 a fire that engulfed seven buildings, burned most of the contents and memorabilia belonging to the organization. After that, the nonprofit became stale for a while.
In 2018, Justin Ray Williams was recruited to be the next Executive Director to rebuild the organization and in 2020, two new artists, Zack Turner, and Greg Rowles,
were inducted at the House of Blues Myrtle Beach during the South Carolina Country Music Awards. In November of 2022, Dr. Godbold asked Costner to lead the organization. Since then, there have been two major induction shows with thousands of people in attendance.
As a 501-c3 organization, the organization has relied on donations and support from the state of South Carolina to continue to fund these costly induction shows. Entering 2025, funding was “put on hold” so other revenue stream opportunities were created. Later, it was decided to create new shows and events featuring Hall of Fame members to help raise funding. One of those is the Casey Kasem Top 40 Countdown Experience. For more information, visit Roy.Costner@Charter.com or for tickets contact the Don Gibson Theater, 704-4878114.

Cleveland County Sheriff
Alan Norman offers tips for safe holiday shopping
The holiday season is in full swing, which means that local shopping centers will be packed with eager shoppers looking for the perfect gifts for their families and friends. In 2024, an estimated 81 million people in the United States graced their local shopping centers on Black Friday, which means stores, parking lots, and roadways will be busy, busy, busy!
Popular shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday can also lead to spikes in criminal activity like shoplifting, fraud, and even violent crime. Sheriff Norman offers some helpful tips to help your holiday shopping go smoothly this year:
• Keep your purse or wallet close to your body and avoid keeping your phone in your back pocket where it can easily be taken.
• Never fight or argue over an item in the store!
• Stay aware of your surroundings at all times and locate the exits closest to you in case of an emergency.
• Before you leave for the store, let a friend or family member know where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Do not leave shopping bags visible in your vehicle. Stow them in the locked trunk or take them directly home.
• Wait until you are asked by the cashier to take your credit or debit card out of your wallet. Someone waiting behind you may use this as an opportunity to look over your shoulder and get your account information.
• If you see someone or something suspicious, notify a store employee or law enforcement officer.
Last year, more people shopped online during Black Friday than they did in stores, totaling over 87 million online shoppers. If you prefer to avoid the brick-and-mortar stores like many others, you may still be at risk of becoming a victim of a cyber-crime. Here’s some ways Sheriff Norman says you can avoid this:
• Only shop on secure, trusted websites. Look for the “HTTPS” or a lock symbol at the beginning of the URL on the website you are visiting. The “S” stands for “secure” which means it is safe to enter your information.
• Keep a record of all of your online purchases and monitor your bank and credit card activity for any purchases that do not match your receipts.
• Use a secure internet connection to do your shopping such as your home Wi-Fi. Public networks (like those available at coffee shops) are not secure and may be used by bad actors to collect your private information.
• Do your research if you are unfamiliar with a particular online retailer. Take your time to ensure that the website is legitimate before making a purchase.
“During the holiday season it is more important than ever to be vigilant and take extra measures to keep ourselves and our community safe. Take some time to review these safety reminders before you head out in search of gifts for your loved ones,” said Sheriff Norman. “But most of all, remember to have fun, and experience the joy this season has to offer!”
