TOPMAN PRESENTS SPECTOR LIVE IN SINGAPORE

O

nce again some of the WAVES team were lucky enough to let loose in the name of work courtesy of Universal Music Singapore on 4th October when Spector, the British band performed LIVE at Avalon, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

Fans were seen eagerly waiting for their favourite band before 7.00 pm and when the action finally started, there was no turning back. The somewhat quirky indie rock band looked chic dressed in Topman’s finest and they kicked off the show with Friday Night, Don’t Ever Let It End. The crowd was in trance singing along every ‘la la la’ with them during ‘Grey Shirt And Tie’ and what’s a rock show without any head banging?! Enthusiastic fans were singing away and swaying and thumping their feet to the highly energetic performance of “Chevy Thunder” and “Never Fade Away”. What a night it had been and of course one can never forget! We leave you behind with a bevy of photographs.

Just like you and me, Stickybox was conceived in a bedroom and started out small and began to grow into one of a kind clothing line. Based in Johor Bahru, the line was formerly known as “Kotak Melekit Clothing”, the name Stickybox (Kotak Melekit) was inspired from the concept of “to-‘stick’-withone” which is simple while “Box” refers to the idea of thinking out of the box. Stickybox consists of a few teenagers who have the same interest in the basic foundation of arts and design. Stickybox seems to have its own followers and fans for its concept of simplicity as more than 5000 pieces of shirts designed and produced were sold since its establishment. Apart from clothing, Stickybox also offers designing services, printing and producing merchandises such as lanyard, keychain, stickers, button badge and etc. Or motto: “Stickybox for All, Stick with Us”. You have multiple roles to play, not forgetting being a good husband and father to three adorable children, where do you find the time to juggle all roles? I create a routine for myself that I follow with full discipline and regardless if it involves professional work or familyrelated responsibilities. Almost always, when I’m at home, I will ensure that I bathe my 3 boys before I leave for work or before I travel, and my wife will do so in the evening. When I’m back, spending time with my wife is a must, whether it’s an hour of quality time at a fast-food restaurant or 2 hours of fine-dining! At the same time, I do not forget my responsibilities as a son where I would always say my goodbyes to my parents who live across the street. All this ensures my positivity throughout my daily routine at work.

You are a renowned motivational speaker and did something inspire you to turn into this field?

It started 14 years ago, when I first got my SPM results. I was offered by four different sponsors to pursue my degree. For the very first time at the age of 17, I was asked to give my first motivational talk at St John’s Institution, the school which nurtured me to be who I am today. I was always very active in school, whether as a debater, public speaker, performer or as a Taekwondo contender. My inspiration came from wanting to do my best and in hoping others to emulate what my father has taught me; “To become jack of all trades, and master of each”.

You received a great response for your book titled “Motivasi Santai # Cinta”. What led you to write on this topic?

Funny as it may seem, the name “Abang Asmara” was given to me by a prominent entertainment editor. Since my song “Asmara Ini” became a nationwide hit about 10 years ago, the word “Cinta” has become a branding for me. People will ask me for love advice and relationship tips. This remained until today, where people ask me via social media. I decided to come up with the hashtag #Cinta which was very well received. This led to the birth of the book.

We hear that you are out with your new book, tell us a bit more about it.

There were talks of you intending to open an exclusive restaurant, what is the progress so far?

The original idea was to open a bakery for my wife. She is a fantastic baker and cake decorator, running a busy home business. Winning the title has allowed me to revisit the plan. We are in discussion to open a French fusion cafe within the bakery itself. I would love to include a teaching kitchen corner where enthusiasts can come and share knowledge. It is all now in the pipeline.

You have released a new single titled “Jaga-Jaga” with rapper Altimet under your 5th album. What can your fans expect from this album?

It is called “Lima” for a good reason. It being the fifth album, there is a title track “Lima”, talking about “5 steps to falling in love”. Within these five steps, one will experience different level of emotions before grasping the real meaning of love. The album encapsulates the experience of being in a relationship whether it works or not. All I can say is that whoever missed “Abang Asmara”, this album is about him! He..he..! I have penned most of the songs myself, with the help of great producers like Azlan Abu Hassan, Imran Ajmain, Ajai, Rafikoncept and Mode RuffEdge.

Among all the “many hats” you put on, which are you most passionate about?

This may surprise you; I enjoy being a father the most. I like to think with my many hats, I expose my children to the many businesses I am involved in. They see me sing, cook and act via the TV. So, they’re my first priority no matter what I do.

Who is your role model in life?

My father for his loving yet disciplining nature on emphasizing that education comes first. My mother who is the most patient person I’ve ever known on earth. Although the both of them have given me the space to become who I want to be, they nurtured us to apply modern thinking without compromising religion. Of course, I do have a spot for YA Bhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, for his endless thirst for knowledge and always giving wholesome answers to life’s toughest questions.

Final words to your fans and especially WAVES Lifestyle readers.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving” - a quote by Albert Einstein that I live by.

It is actually my 5th book. It’s all about motivating others through simple, straight to the point quotes. There will be about 200 quotes in this new book ranging from positive tips on how to face adversity in life to how to withstand criticism from your loved ones.

What were your thoughts upon attaining the First Celebrity MasterChef Malaysia 2012 title and what led you to participate in the first place?

Honestly, I entered the competition blindly. I thought I was going to be the in-house motivator. I didn’t realize I was going to be the contestant! The journey was filled with perseverance, resilience, and creativity especially in dealing with the challenges of cooking up a storm for the 3 renowned chef-judges. I achieved it all by having my wife, kids, parents, grandma and siblings in mind. Their faces were always in my head, and it was going for a noble cause- a charity called Yayasan Jantung Negara. Both my paternal grandparents died due to heart problems. Therefore, winning the title allowed me to first contribute the prize money to the organization and secondly, embark on a career as a celebrity chef. www.waveslifestyle.com

DJ LEEY HOUDINI What led you to become a DJ? Music is my passion, hobby and work. However, I didn’t expect that I would end up being a producer and a DJ. Initially I learnt it just for fun until I started mixing in July 2011 by making my own podcast “Leey Houdini Trance Podcast” every month and it got many positive feedbacks from friends & listeners. It then inspired me to produce my own tracks and let them listen and enjoy it. Where and when did you first start? My journey began late November 2011 through my friend, Amirul Ahmade (Rojak Bois member) and I subsequently learnt it further by jamming at Maddkidz Studio. My first show was at Exit Club, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur on 8th December 2011. I was invited by an old friend who is a DJ there to co-spin and it was attended only by close friends to overcome my nerves! What do you hope to achieve in the next 10 years? I would like to produce and release my own album and would like it to reach an international level. Besides that, I would love to spin alongside international DJs and bring up our country’s name. Describe your music style/taste.. I use complex, intelligent-progressed melodies, highly layered and tech bass line for my production. I would consider my music taste towards progressive and uplifting trance. If you were not a DJ, what will you end up doing instead? I used to work as a designer and photographer. I am still in the field and am also interested in art.

If your house was on fire, what three things will you save? My External hard-disc, mobile and a pack of cigarettes to release stress while watching my house on fire! Touchwood! What is the one song that is always on your playlist? I keep changing my playlist but at the moment, I play my own new track “Leey Houdini - World Journey (Original Mix)”. Name three artists that inspire you. - Above & Beyond - W&W - TRIMIX (Malaysia Trio Group) and Blink & Goldfish which is another successful Malaysian group. If I could live my life all over again, I would… I would start my career as a producer and DJ much earlier. Where do you usually spin? Where can our readers find you?! I am basically a guest DJ. I used to spin at Milk Club at Bangsar, KL, Water Place at Heritage Row, KL and at The Vogue - Mont Kiara et cetera.

He can be reached at his band page under Leey Houdini and on Facebook and Twitter @leeyhoudini for more upcoming updates.

6 WAYS

To Wear A T-Shirt Manisha Dhalani tells readers how to dress up with the good old t-shirt and do it right with the following ways:

5

This may be a great tip for the girls, but it’s also an awesome idea for the boys. Use your pin or badge collection to decorate your t-shirt so it doesn’t look oh-so-boring. Ladies can “bling” your look up even more by using sparkles – which are great for the kids as well. To top it off, finish your look with great accessories such as a hat, belt, studded earrings, headbands or even long necklaces.

1

To show your arty-farty side

We haven’t met anyone who gets tired of reading people’s t-shirts. T-shirts are perfect to show your artistic side. Get hold of t-shirts that have quirky words, abstract designs, even local brand names such as STICKYBOX (support local!) to show off your creative mind. Want to take it to another level? Then get down and dirty by learning how to silkscreen, embroidery or even tie-dye your own plain t-shirts. It’s definitely an eye-catcher!

6

Heading out to meet some friends but running late? Just wear your plain t-shirt – yes, plain! It’s hard to go wrong with a plain white, black or even coloured t-shirt paired off with a comfortable pair of jeans or three-quarter pants and your favourite pair of shoes, slippers, flats, platforms, heels and boots! You are all set and yet able to look good.

2

3

Underneath it all

This is a classic. You’re off to an interview but you just can’t tolerate the heat, so how are you going to wear that thick blazer? Here’s a tip – wear a plain t-shirt underneath on your way and then layer it up with a blazer or a vest just before that important meeting. Make sure your tshirt is clean and ironed, of course. Another tip is to tuck in your t-shirt, or wear a loose t-shirt to make it look like a blouse. www.waveslifestyle.com

Just the way it is

It’s all about the layers

You’ve seen celebrities do it and you’ve seen this idea displayed in shop fronts – now it’s about time you try it out too. Layer your plain t-shirts with gorgeous scarves available at retail outlets, or even with colourful tank tops for that added effect. We’ve tried out a couple of these looks ourselves and we’re definitely fans!

“Bling” it up

4

Wear it under a sleeveless dress

This is a great tip for the conservative ladies. Maxi dresses are becoming extremely popular but most of them are either halter, tube or sleeveless. So what do you do? Wear a t-shirt (short/long sleeve – up to you) underneath. It’s a great look to cover up areas of your body you don’t want to expose, plus you get to show off your brand new dress to your friends. Flip over to see t-shirt designs by STICKYBOX and let’s support local!

The Goodness World of

Chocolates

F

or years chocolates have been getting a bad reputation and we are here to set the record straight that it is not bad but good for you. Yes, all you chocoholics out there, you heard right. For those who are not aware (even after all these years), chocolates come from the seeds of cocoa tree that have been cultivated for at least three millennia in Mexico, Central and South America. Even Malaysia is not left out in this bandwagon for we are also cocoa producers and there is a Malaysian Cocoa Board in Nilai that produces locally made chocolates and cost a fraction lower than the international ones. Through proper Research & Development, the Malaysian made chocolates are also tasty and of superior quality.

“Chemically speaking, chocolate really is the world’s perfect food. --Michael Levine, nutrition researcher, as quoted in The Emperors of Chocolate: Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars. U.S Researchers have found that regular chocolate eaters may more frequently have lower BMIs. Scientists suspect that antioxidants in cocoa help protect the energy-producing mitochondria which are power cells. Dietitians advise savouring small amounts - just a few squares a day of chocolate with a cocoa content of 70 per cent or more. However, before you reach out to the next yummy chocolate bar, beware that all chocolates are not created equally. For instance, dark chocolates have more health benefits compared to milk chocolates that are packed with sugar and high calories.

16

www.waveslifestyle.com

Dark Chocolates

Eating dark chocolate could help control diabetes and blood pressure, according to an Italian study. Researchers found that eating 100g of dark chocolate each day for 15 days lowered blood pressure. The same study found that chocolate improved the body’s ability to metabolise sugar.

Benefits

• When it comes to sugar content, dark chocolate surprisingly has a low glycemic index which means it won’t send your blood sugar levels soaring then crashing. • Chocolates are packed with antioxidants, which protect the body from environmental stress. • Chocolates are a rich source of magnesium, which may help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It also contains iron and potassium, linked to a reduced risk of blood pressure and stroke. • Chocolates contain a compound, Phenylethylamine (PEA) that releases “feel-good” chemicals called endorphins in the brain. The same chemicals are released when you fall in love. So when you can’t find a partner, maybe chocolates can be a better lover to keep you happy!

www.waveslifestyle.com

• Women who ate chocolate daily during their pregnancy reported that they were able to handle stress better than mothersto-be who abstained. Also, a Finnish study found their babies were happier and smiled more. • A University of Nottingham researcher found that drinking cocoa rich in flavanols boosts blood flow to key parts of the brain for 2 to 3 hours, which could improve performance and alertness in the short term. Alternatively, do not feel guilty to reach out to that dark chocolate bar that is hidden in the drawer for a quick brain booster. • Cough relief - One study found that chocolate quieted coughs almost as well as codeine, thanks to the obromine it contains. This chemical, responsible for chocolate’s feel-good effect, may suppress activity in a part of the brain called the vagus nerve. We think that there are more than enough reasons for you to indulge in that sinful and delicious chocolate and say goodbye to its bad reputation but REMEMBER: Stick to healthy chocolate with at least 70% cacao (or cocoa, which is cacao in its roasted, ground form). As long as the content is that high, you can reap the benefits from eating only small amounts. Because of its high fat and sugar content, limit yourself to 7 ounces, or about four dark chocolate bars, a week. So snack wisely!

Production of By Chin Hui Han of Malaysian Cocoa Board

e t a l o c o h C

Most people know how to indulge in chocolates; however, not many know how chocolate is produced.

Processing of cocoa to chocolate starts from fermentation. Well-fermented cocoa beans are dried to not more than 7% of moisture content. Both steps are paramount in producing good cocoa flavour pre-cursor. The dried cocoa beans then undergo few processing steps such as beans cleaning, infra-red treatment to loose out the shell from the beans, cracking to convert cocoa beans to cocoa nibs, winnowing to separate the shell and other impurities from the nibs, followed by nibs roasting at 130-150°C, and grinding the roasted cocoa nibs into cocoa liquor or cocoa mass. Pressing of cocoa liquor will produce cocoa butter and cocoa cake. Cocoa powder is produced by pulverizing the cocoa cake. The production of real chocolate requires cocoa liquor/mass, cocoa butter, pulverized sugar, milk powder, not more than 5% of other vegetable fats, lecithin (emulsifier), vanillin (flavoring agent), and salt. Chocolate which contains more than 5% of other vegetable fats is considered as compound chocolate. There are three types of chocolates commonly found in the market; namely dark or bitter sweet, milk and white chocolates. The difference among the three is that in dark chocolate; cocoa mass, cocoa butter and pulverized sugar are the main constituents, whereas milk chocolate comprises of cocoa mass, cocoa butter, pulverized sugar and milk powder and white chocolate has similar ingredients as milk chocolate but without the cocoa mass. Chocolate making starts with mixing all the required ingredients, followed by refining process to reduce the particle size into 25-30ď m; conching to develop full desirable chocolate flavour; tempering to ensure cocoa butter sets in a correct crystal form to give glossiness, good snap upon breaking, and good storage stability. Various types of fillings in chocolate praline can be incorporated during the moulding process. Cooling and demoulding are the final steps in producing this seductive, delicious and healthy chocolate! If any agency/organization/school/association (but not in individual form) that plans to visit the Cocoa Board, they may write in or contact the following: Centre Manager Malaysian Cocoa Board Cocoa Innovation and Technology Centre Lot 12621, Kawasan Perindustrian Nilai 71800 Nilai Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus Tel: 06-7999001/4 Fax: 06-7941910

Beauty & Fashion

Up close with

Sri Lankan sweetheart... Ornella M.J. Gunesekere Ornella was the 2nd Runner-up of Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2010 beauty pageant. She went on to participate in Miss Tourism International Award that was held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia late 2011 and won the Miss Friendship title. Besides being a beauty with brains, she has a great sense of humour!

When did you start your modeling career?

At the age of fourteen, I modeled for my mother’s friend who had organized a fashion show at a resort but that was just a one off event. I had no prior experience at that time and even though I found it exciting and interesting, I never even remotely considered pursuing a career in the industry. In the latter part of 2009, I was discovered by a renowned choreographer Brian Kerkoven, and not long after that, I found myself officially entering the world of modeling, walking down the ramp at Colombo Fashion Week - the biggest show of the country held annually.

How did it feel to be selected as one of the top finalist in the prestigious Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant in 2010?

It was an incredible feeling, the kind of feeling that words cannot explain and we know that most often some of the best things in life cannot be explained but only experienced and should be appreciated to the fullest. I remember being nervous yet I was keen to know what lay ahead because the local pageant organizers groomed us both physically and mentally for the Final and much was learned along the way. In having made the Top 5, and then subsequently placed 2nd runner up, I felt so blessed and could not help but smile till my cheeks were burning! I did not really understand the gravity of the situation I was getting myself into, and because I had no experience in the world of pageantry and so little modeling experience, so when it gradually hit me, I was pleasantly surprised at the turn of events.

You went on to represent your country in Miss Tourism International 2011 in Malaysia and won the Miss Friendship title. Tell us about your experience in Malaysia.

This was my second visit to Malaysia, having spent an amazing Christmas with my family just two years prior. Malaysia was even more beautiful than I had remembered and this time I got to experience the life and culture in a deeper way as we were taken to many places and cities, each different and exciting as the last. A wonderfully diverse country with exceptionally warm and welcoming hosts, Malaysia always promises memories that are truly unforgettable. As for the pageant, I was in so much shock after hearing my country Sri Lanka called into the Top 15! I actually was a little lost on stage as to where I should go because I could not believe the amazing thing that had just happened. Overjoyed and beaming, I was all smiles and winning the ‘Miss Friendship’ honour only added to that blessing. I thank all my beautiful friends for giving me the best Christmas gift that year. It was magical and such a beautiful experience which I wish I could re-live.

In the Miss Charity Queen 2011, you were selected as one of the Top 5 who collected the most amount of money for the charity. How did you achieve that?

I was taken by surprise, so I think we should ask all the generous donors that helped me! He..he.. I guess a warm hearted smile goes a long way, because that was pretty much what I did! They were very generous, eager to inquire about Sri Lanka and I was happy to share. I think they all understood that what they donated was in honour of goodwill, so the real challenge was in the way I presented myself. I had to be confident and when they asked me joyfully, “Why should I help you, Miss Sri Lanka?” I asked them in turn, “Why not?” and gave them my biggest smile!

Any current or ongoing projects that you have undertaken?

Still in its early stage, I am currently in the process of compiling a book. It is primarily based on my personal life experiences and the lessons and values I have learned through them. More about this is revealed in the second last question!

Share with us your beauty tips of having a flawless skin.

Taking care of one’s skin is a vital habit we should consider incorporating it in our daily routine because it really shows when you fail to follow through with it. I have found through personal experience that drinking a lot of water throughout the day really helps achieve a glowing skin. A good night’s rest, staying away from fried food, and most of all, not

www.waveslifestyle.com

picking and poking at one’s face! Also, cleansing one’s face to remove dust, dirt and makeup before bed time is highly recommended. Now, for my biggest secret to flawless skin… Generous doses of smile stemming from a beautiful heart! I tell you, there is nothing that lights up your face and skin than a smile like that; the kind of smile that is so electrifying the Utility Company will charge you! Lastly, apply lots of Nutella all over your skin, this way you will have one of the sweetest faces ever! The last tip is a joke and not to be taken seriously unless you don’t mind ants exfoliating your face!

Do you think that dressing fashionably is important in today’s society?

I believe there is a certain degree of importance in dressing somewhat fashionably in today’s society. By this I am by no means insinuating that one needs to be parading the streets with the latest Louis Vuitton or Chanel ensemble. Fashion is an expression of who you are, and it varies from country to culture to personality. Trends come and go and fashion changes; what’s in today can be out tomorrow. If you dress up and clean up good, it will only reflect positively on you; there is nothing wrong with looking your best. If you have an important event to attend then it is advised that you take the extra effort to put your best foot forward (be it with heels or without) and make a lasting impression. Remember; it’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it. They say ‘play hard to get’ but I think it’s all about playing ‘hard to forget’ so that when it comes to leave the event, you leave a good impression.

Who is your role model in life?

A role model is someone whose life or values you try to emulate, and with that said, I think it is wise if one emulates all that is good, noble and beautiful in this world. Mother Teresa is associated with the word, ‘Love’ and this is not the kind of love that is expressed by the love you have for your favourite car, a summer romance or the love you have for your family. She is worth emulating and I think the world needs more people who seek to be like her. No one can be exactly like another and I do not remedy that notion either. We are all human with both good and ‘not so good’ habits, but we all must learn from one another and help foster the good in each other. This is why my role model is “Unconditional Love” the kind that is patient, kind, not jealous, not boastful, not proud, not rude, not easily angered, not self-seeking and keeps no record of wrong. So, I try to choose to emulate Love every day.

You aspire to study nursing and fight adolescent depression. Any reasons behind it?

At the tender age of fourteen, a sport’s injury caused a displacement in my spine which left me having to give up sports along with other things a normal teenager would do. Experiencing the bitter end of depression with all that was happening around me, I had to mentally grow up a lot in order to compensate and handle my delicate situation. For six years, I persevered and achieved so many things that doctors said I would not be able to. In June, I underwent a major spinal surgery where four titanium screws and two rods were drilled into and merged with my bones to give me a straighter spine. At twenty years of age and post surgery, I had to learn how to sit up, stand and walk again all over

24

again! The people who know my whole story say things like, “Ornella was ‘Titanium Girl’ even before any rods and screws! Before this incident, at the age of seventeen I decided that I would be there for someone, to help them along the way. Facing such a difficult situation at adolescence is not easy, but it is possible to conquer. Following a nursing course would not only teach me how to care for and handle people physically but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually and by majoring in overcoming adolescence depression, I hope to share my personal testimony, showing anyone that if I could do it, then they can too. This is why I am keen on expressing even the most personal little tit bits into my book, rightly titled, “Titanium Girl.”

Your inspiring words to young women intending to join the modeling world.

Contrary to popular belief, entering the modeling world does not limit to one being only an entertainer, actress, and model or working in the fashion industry. The scope of opportunities opened out for you are endless whatever your ambition is! Using your experiences and the exposure that comes as a result of working in the industry can aid you in furthering your personal passions and goals. The industry is a grand platform to reach greater things, so be brave and wise in your choices, take that step and watch things happen. Take it from me; having walked ramps in six inch heels with a displaced spine, I was able to achieve success beyond my wildest dreams! Keep your family and friends close, hold fast to your roots and make wise choices. There is nothing that stops you, so persevere knowing that you have my support and blessing.

FnB & Recipes Tony is on a personal mission to put every good hawker in Johor on the World Wide Web, one hawker at a time. He is passionate about photography, writing, good food, people, and cooking. Loves Johor food and is fascinated by Johor’s unique culinary heritage created by its melting pot of diverse cultures.

Food We Love By Tony of Johor Kaki Food Blog

Pisang Goreng (Banana Fritters) In this issue, we bring to you all-time favourite comfort food that we all grew up eating. Pisang Goreng (banana fritters) is a well loved, common street hawker snack in Johor. I would describe its texture as molten hot, almost like sweet melted cheese wrapped in crispy, crunchy fried batter and is a favourite tea time treat for many of us. Chilling with friends at a pisang goreng stall, enjoying this fried snack with a cuppa “teh tarik” (frothy tea) is a special kind of uniquely Malaysian bonding ritual! In this series, I focused on three pisang goreng stalls that we love but I am sure there are more that we have yet to discover.

Pisang Mawar

Sweet Banana

“GORENG 2”

Is arguably the most famous pisang goreng stall in Johor Bahru. Pisang Mawar is a cheerful place with constant streams of customers enjoying their tea break here or bagging loads of goodies to take home to enjoy with family. Pisang Mawar also has many Singaporean customers as it is located on a convenient route for Singaporean drivers to pick up this bag of goodies on their way home. The delicious flavour and texture is what draws customers in time after time.

Another famous pisang goreng stall, Sweet Banana has been selling their popular fried goodies from their road side stall along Jalan Stulang Darat for many years before they recently relocated to their new premise at Stulang Walk. Now customers can relax and enjoy the same tasty fried goodies with comfortable seating and easy, ample free parking. As for the pisang goreng itself, you got to try it to believe its excellent flavour!

This particular stall in Taman Sri Skudai does not really have a name, but it is a favourite place among the residents who like to come here to take a break from the afternoon heat and catch up on the day’s happenings in the neighbourhood. It is not unusual for famous hawker stalls to have no name and yet everyone in the neighbourhood knows about them as it has already established itself as a local landmark. I would say that this is a great place to enjoy a delicious plate of pisang goreng and at the same time catching up with the local happenings.

No. 1 Ikan Bakar (BBQ Seafood) @ Taman Universiti, Skudai, Malaysia

Taman Universiti No. 1 stall seems to be foodies’ ground zero in the town’s busy commercial centre! Among the many stalls situated here, the No. 1 Ikan Bakar stall is a big favourite hangout for UTM (Universiti Technologi Malaysia) students and Taman Universiti residents. The stalls here offer tasty meals at very affordable prices in causal, relaxed surroundings. No. 1 Ikan Bakar is a favourite among the students because of their affordable RM6 dinner set! The Ikan Bakar (barbequed fish) is prepared in a unique way and consists of a slab of stingray, garnished with lady’s fingers and topped with a fried egg and their special sambal chilli. It is noteworthy to mention that each dinner set gets half of the good sized baby stingray and the beauty is all this cost only RM6 and it is no surprise why this dinner set is very popular with students. Besides the set dinner, we can also choose our own seafood to be barbequed. Our Ikan Bakar order came in a large slab of stingray and squids garnished with generous amount of lady’s fingers and petai beans (stinky beans) and smothered in a thick blanket of sambal chilli with everything grilled on a bed of banana leaf.

www.waveslifestyle.com

The aroma from all this flavours is indescribable and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. The most striking thing about No. 1 Ikan Bakar was their signature sambal chilli. According to the owner, Mr. Sim, the sambal chilli is a blend of 22 spices and herbs! The sambal felt gritty from the grounded ingredients and was neither too spicy nor too salty and I personally liked it. The No. 1 Ikan Bakar’s sambal chilli is so popular that Mr. Sim sells them in 360gram containers at RM10 each. No. 1 Ikan Bakar’s grilled seafood is also served with “chinchalok” which comprises chopped onions and calamansi; something that is not often seen nowadays. The chinchalok sauce has that characteristic fusion of tangy, sweet and salty taste. Personally, all these spicy hot sauces numb the taste buds a little and overpower the relatively bland flavour of the stingray flesh. On a positive note, the stingray was reliant on the sambal and chinchalok to lift its taste level. Besides that, Mr. Sim, also prepares fried squids and lady’s fingers. I absolutely loved the lady’s fingers, petai and squids combination with the hot sambal chilli and was glad to have made a stop at this place.

Singaporean Becomes First Woman to Cross the World’s Largest Sand Desert

By Aristotle Nandy

www.waveslifestyle.com

31

Travel & Leisure A Singaporean adventure travels’ organizer has become the first woman to successfully cross the Rub Al Khali, the world’s largest sand desert. Hajar, 32, voyaged her way into the history books after completing her expedition over a seven-day period beginning from the North of the Empty Quarter on 22nd March 2012 through the eastern lobe and completing it in Salalah, Oman in the South on 28th March 2012. In all, Hajar traversed 1400 km across the desert, which spans the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Deemed ‘impassable’ by the Lawrence of Arabia, the first documented crossing of the Empty Quarter was in 1931 by Bertram Thomas, which was quickly followed by a crossing by Abdullah Philby, the father of the famous spy Kim Philby, in 1932. However,

32

no woman has been recorded as having crossed the Empty Quarter, which spans 650,000 sq km, although the renowned explorer Rosita Forbes was the last woman to contemplate a crossing with Abdullah Philby as her travelling partner some 80 years ago. According to research geophysicist, Dr. Jeffrey Wynn, the Empty Quarter is logistically more difficult to cross than Antarctica, and considers an expedition there ‘harsh’ and ‘dangerous’. Dr. Wynn believes that Hajar’s feat makes her the first woman to have successfully crossed the Empty Quarter.

www.waveslifestyle.com

Hajar is the founder of Urbane Nomads, a travel company that is about luxury travel in remote, off-the-beaten-trek destinations. She has spoken and participated on the panels of key industry events in Istanbul, Singapore and Cannes. Hajar was also nominated as one of the ‘Great Women of our Time’ by Singapore Women’s Weekly.

Taking in diverse landscapes- from the areas laced with gas pipelines to the sabkhas (salt flats) of the Umm As Samim (‘Mother of Poison’), from vast plains to the dunes of Ramlat Gharbaniyat or the surreal landscapes of Ramlat Mitan close to the Yemeni border, Hajar’s expedition was replete with excitement and danger including a dislocated roof rack at the start of the expedition, sandstorms in the final few nights and a round of bullets found in the desert close to the Yemeni border.

www.waveslifestyle.com

The founder of Urbane Nomads is now planning her next expedition to Antarctica. She will be heading towards the Pole of Inaccessibility on top of the South Pole. To date, there have been more than 300 people who have successfully crossed the South Pole. Only 6 men so far have managed to reach the Pole of Inaccessibility on foot. If successful, she will be the first woman to do so!

Internet Banking W

hilst online banking is now regarded as a convenient, reliable and a safe way to manage your accounts, it also raises the need for added security and it is crucial to ensure that your bank uses the highest industry standard encryption to protect your confidential account information. There are also a number of steps that you can take to stay safe and we have some useful tips to help you protect yourself against fraud:

1 2 3 4

5

Your bank should never contact you to ask for your personal information. If you get an e-mail or a phone call asking for this information, a fraudster is at work. Do not write down, e-mail or store your account details.

Do not write down your Password and Memorable Information in obvious places.

Check the last time you logged on to your online account every time you log in — if it looks odd, someone else may have accessed your accounts. Check that the website is secure. Secure internet pages will (usually) feature a padlock in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. It will usually show as “https” at the screen. Keep a lookout for that.

6

7

Check the site certificate - sites that are serious about security always show a valid site certificate.

Avoid using internet banking on publicly accessible computers. Internet cafes are not always secure and sometimes these computers save personal information without your knowledge.

8

Choose a strong password for internet banking and change it regularly. Select a 6 to 15 character password that uses a mix letters and numbers that you can remember without writing it down.

9

Always log off. This closes your connection with your internet banking service.

If all of the above are followed diligently, we hope internet banking would continue to be your safe choice of banking.

Learning & Motivation

Dealing with Egoistic Energy By Rose Osman Known as Your Personal Motivator and also a Reiki Healer. She motivates many people via online and offline since 2010 and has started to include Reiki in her programs since 2012. Her passion is towards energy, love, relationships, personal growth and healing.

Ego

; whether defined as a character or in my definition, as an energy is like a battery with two poles. The positive side of the ego is when it lifts your self-esteem and courage. It is hard for you to give up when you have your egos helping you when you need it. The negative side of the ego is when it stops you from making progress in life. It also means that your egos are controlling you with your own power. In any relationship, when egos become the main energy in communications, the relationship will stop growing. Having ego in between you and the other person is like having a thick wall that separates two people from growing in a relationship. If you are experiencing egoistic situation in your relationship, you might want to try these tips to help the relationship grow to the next level.

Spot the Ego

When it comes to communication, who do you actually communicate with? Many people plainly communicate without knowing if they are communicating with the person or the person’s ego. When ego is the one you are communicating with, regardless whose ego it is, you get your point nowhere in the conversation. If you spot an ego between you and the other person, the best way to communicate is by being temporarily silent. Take your time to calm down and let the ego step aside before you start communicating again.

No Finger Pointing

Whenever you are in a discussion or in an argument, never point a finger at the person’s ego. When you do that, it’s like saying ‘come and pick a fight with me’. It is like inviting the ego to step into the conversation. If you are dealing with a person who has so many egos in him/ her, never even mention any traits that relate to his/her ego. For example, if his/her biggest ego always wants to feel right, never say that he/ she was wrong in any way.

36

Praise the Ego

This may sounds surprising but praising one’s ego will make the ego step aside easily or at least having the ego in silence for a while. The important tip in this method is to praise it with love and honesty but never praise it cynically as that will make the ego to become worst. This method is to deal with others’ egos and is truly helpful when you need to be heard. When it comes to dealing with egos, take your time knowing them. It doesn’t matter if the egos are yours or it belongs to the person you are dealing with for egos are egos. They may appear in many dresses but they act the same. If you realize, many relationships stop growing because people allow their egos to represent them during a communication. Yes, it makes them feel good but the feeling won’t last. If you are looking to grow your relationship with others, the first thing to do is to get to know all your egos and where do they stand in your life. It is like driving a car. When you let your ego drive the car, it takes you where it wants to go. But if you have it on the passenger’s seat, they go where you go. In guiding people through mind power, I suggest the back seats for all egos. It tells them that you are in control. www.waveslifestyle.com
