WAVEparticle Executive Summary What follows is an update on the progress regarding the development of the artworks for the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. It also details the successful two-day art residency focused on the artworks and the art strategy, undertaken by the WAVEparticle team in the Gorbals Health Centre at the end of October. PORTRAIT GALLERY – detailed pg 13-20 •
WAVEparticle have created a map of all the portraits taken to date, (cover page) – it’s a stunning image. This image, which is an ongoing work for our own indexing purposes, suggests itself as a fantastic candidate for a wall work within the new building.
•
The ongoing process of meeting many local people through gathering portraits for the Portrait Gallery has suggested the opportunity for a number of short documentaries that are focused on specific groups of people. For example, through the work WAVEparticle has done in parallel with the Keep Well events at the Citizens Theatre, we met a group of 5 amputees who have moved in beside each other in the new housing in Laurieston, and become friends. They are delighted with the support they have received to date and the fact that the Housing Association has grouped them together in one housing block. They have insightful stories about their lives.

WAVEparticle would like to drawdown funding from the additional £30k garnered from other sources, to develop a series of these documentaries with the idea that they form part of an archive and can be screened on occasions when it is suitable to have sound within the new health centre or at the Laurieston Arena or even in the foyer of the NGHA - connecting the new health centre to the broader community.

New Gorbals Health & Care Centre Update Report WAVEparticle Executive Summary • John Goldie, Head of Addictions suggested that he might be able to source funding to make a specific work in relation to the opportunities and parameters within the Community Addictions Team. • The tendering process for the monitors for the Portrait Gallery has been done (Robert Armstrong) and has had a good response. * There is a strong relationship between the screening of the video portraits at the Laurieston Arena and the Portrait Gallery. It embeds the work within the local community. SECOND FLOOR • A successful application has been made to the endowment fund and £4.5 k garnered to specifically address the second floor of the new building and to ensure that artworks are embedded there. Everyone has agreed that this is important and WAVEparticle will be meeting haa design to progress this. haa design has already incorporated elements that emerged from WAVEparticle’s earlier community engagement in to their design. RECESSES – detailed pg 21-22 • Further to a meeting with John McDonald (JM architects), John highlighted that recesses may pierce the wall space and create issues with sound transfer. WAVEparticle, with JM Architects, are looking for a design solution to this potential problem, including soundproofing in the areas with recesses, and /or thickening of the walls. • WAVEparticle are researching the best system to present a re-sealable recess, based upon the recesses seen at the visit to the West Centre. • Another option is to put a series of unsealed recesses above 2 meters.

New Gorbals Health & Care Centre Update Report WAVEparticle Executive Summary TREE OF LIFE Part 2 – detailed pg 23-34 • With the help of Liz Peden from Gorbals Art Project, all the people in the Tree of Life photograph have been identified and the hope is to contact them all, to make a video portrait. • Two portraits are already gathered in relation to the Tree of Life Part 2 i.e. Jimmy Mutter and Dr. Marshall. TOUCHSTONE – detailed pg 25 • As has been agreed by the Arts Development Group, Touchstones will be incorporated at the heart of the southern courtyard at no additional significant cost to the art strategy, as WAVEparticle already has this project under development in the local area, within the overall Laurieston Art Strategy. WALL WORKS – detailed pg 26-30 • Texts: WAVEparticle will write a short brief for the Gorbals Art Project in relation to gathering potential inspirational and apposite texts for the wall works. • Vinyl Landscapes: beautiful landscapes for identified walls in the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre, particularly the Addictions Unit. REGLIT - detailed pg 29-30 • WAVEparticle has been working in partnership with JM Architects to develop a series of design proposals that will integrate art within the glazing of the external elevation and courtyard spaces of the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. To progress these ideas WAVEparticle have contacted the Reglit Glasgow branch to engage in a testing process of possibilities which will allow us to design a piece of art that is unique to the Gorbals, whilst allowing Reglit to explore future possibilities and uses for their product. During the Gorbals Health Centre residency WAVEparticle displayed the Reglit samples, allowing staff, patients and visitors to examine and physically touch a material that will be used in the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre, making the future present. This allowed for the consideration of aesthetics and practicalities, which resulted in valuable design information being gathered by WAVEparticle.

New Gorbals Health & Care Centre Update Report WAVEparticle Executive Summary ON-SITE ARTIST RESIDENCY • In conversation with John Goldie (Head of Addictions), a discussion arose about the possibility of a short-term artist residency that would focus on building an artwork specific to the experiences of staff and patients involved in the Recovery Unit. WAVEparticle has identified a Glasgow-based artist with a background in community / social work who could take this idea forward. WAVEparticle will write a brief and present this at the next meeting of the Arts Development Group. FLOORWORKS • There has been a specific staff enquiry about returning to the floorworks for the CAHMS area within the new building. It’s coupled with another suggestion to migrate the designated CAHMS area within the new building into individual rooms. • WAVEparticle explained that whilst this was not possible within the budget tolerances of the current art strategy we believe this can be productively progressed during a proposed artist residency. • WAVEparticle will continue to gather and bank any material that comes through the engagement process that would be useful in terms of the artist residency. WAVEparticle will bring a costed proposal to the next meeting of the Arts Development Group.

New Gorbals Health & Care Centre Update Report WAVEparticle Executive Summary CALEDONIA ROAD CHURCH • Regarding the ongoing development of the Caledonia Road Church site, WAVEparticle has a rolling programme of temporary events underway, related to the renewal of place and to rebuilding community interest in the area. • WAVEparticle are also working closely with Mobilelands, (Strathclyde University project) re using the outside of the church as a growing space, most recently a field of sunflowers that animated the area directly in front of the church. DIGITAL PORTAL • There is an ongoing proposal being developed with the Arts development Group and Jacqui sands about the possibility of creating a digital portal that connects all the wonderful work in health centres and hospitals across Scotland to regional centres like the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. The idea was stimulated by the recent visit to see the art in the New South Glasgow Hospitals. This would give people access to some of the best work installed throughout Scotland as well as build a connection between the smaller health centre and the larger institutions.

WAVEparticle held a very successful 2-day residency, on-site in the Gorbals Health Centre, as part of the ongoing community engagement around the art strategy and artworks for the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. On display were some of the artworks that have been generated with the help of local people, staff, patients and visitors, who were given the opportunity, at earlier consultation and engagement events, to have a say and be involved in the artwork for the new building.

Staff, patients & health centre visitors will have the opportunity to have their portrait filmed for the ever growing ‘Portrait Gallery’ and learn more about the artworks, such as the ‘Tree of Life Part 2’ and other community-led projects. WAVEparticle will be on hand to hear your views, stories and anecdotes and offer you the opportunity to see the developing plans for the new Gorbals Health and Care Centre.

WAVEparticle is working with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow City Council, hub West Scotland Ltd and other partners to fill the building with engaging artwork.

Portrait Gallery Monitor: a monitor displaying a compilation of one minute video portraits of local people taken at a range of local festivals & events, including for example; the Laurieston Past Present Possible gala day on 9th May 2015, the Gorbals Fair, the Laurieston Summer Festival, the Oatlands Square artwork launch and most recently the Keepwell Event at the Citizens Theatre. The monitor displaying the portraits was to let people see first hand how the Portrait Gallery will work. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

Art Strategy / Artworks Portrait Booth Portrait Booth: with the help of experienced filmmaker Basharat Khan a portrait booth was setup in the community room in the Gorbals Health Centre, to give staff, patients and health centre visitors the opportunity to have their 1-minute video portrait taken for the ever-growing Portrait Gallery. Over the two day residency, the WAVEparticle team gathered an additional 51 portraits for the Portrait Gallery, along with local stories, anecdotes and historic facts about the current health centre, from staff, patients and visitors. Portrait Gallery Jeanne Athya
Jeanne Athya who was filmed for the Portrait Gallery, along with her husband, Ambrose, told the story of how she had been a patient with one of the GP practices for 54 years. Jeanne’s original doctor was Dr. David Gordon, she is now with his son’s practice Dr. Jonathon Gordon, in the current health centre.

Portrait Gallery Mary McBride
Mary McBride (77yrs old) has been a patient with the health centre since she was 6 years old. Mary told the story of how her first doctor was Dr Livingston, and back then the surgery was located in an old tenement with no waiting room, which meant that patients went in one at a time, whilst everyone else had to wait outside in the rain and the snow! Dougie Baillie (the Gorbals Health Centre Maintenance Assistant), who has been there for 16 yrs, was able to add that Dr. Livingston’s son Eric followed in his father’s footsteps, became a doctor in the current health centre, and only retired 3 yrs ago.

Portrait Gallery Response to the Portrait Gallery
Response to the Portrait Gallery: people were very receptive to the idea of the Portrait Gallery and to having their portrait taken for it. Many people commented, unsolicited, that they liked seeing the monitor with people’s portraits as they walked into the reception. Quite often people recognised the faces onscreen, in some cases their own! “It’s just great to be greeted by smiling faces, it’s very warm and welcoming!”. Art Strategy / Artworks Wall Recesses
Wall Recesses: Staff and patients will be interviewed to draw out an image or object of particular significance that will be displayed in recesses throughout the new building. WAVEparticle created 1:1 models of recesses of varying shapes and sizes, with sample objects and artefacts in them, to allow people the opportunity to see first hand the idea for the recesses and to consider what object personal to them they might display in a recess.

Art Strategy / Artworks Tree of Life Part 2
Tree of Life Part 2: Migrating the existing ‘Tree of Life’ from the Gorbals Health Centre entrance to the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. The proposal is to install a bespoke monitor beside the relocated ‘Tree of Life’ that will screen portraits of some of the adults who made the original work as children in 1996. Dr Marshall, a GP in the health centre, who is in the original photograph from 1996, happily agreed to have his video portrait taken. Liz Peden from the Gorbals Art Project, who worked with the children in 1996, attended a lunchtime meeting with Peter (McCaughey) with a list of the names of the children who took part in the project. Liz in contacting the people involved, quite a few of whom now live in other parts of the world. The hope is we can gather as many of their video portraits as possible.

Art Strategy / Artworks Touchstone
Touchstone: WAVEparticle displayed a series of carved stones to demonstrate the idea for placing Touchstones in the two private courtyard spaces of the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. Touchstone is a project already under development by WAVEparticle, which will eventually see up to 100 large sandstone blocks carved with symbols & text, anything from an everyday saying, to a line from a poem. These will be distributed throughout the Gorbals / Laurieston area, as a permanent marking of place. The overall theme is ‘Universal Love’ and a number of star constellations will be chosen for the placement of the stones. Input from the local community is key to this project to help record the stories and history of the local area - some of the stones will be dedicated to local organisations or individuals, local ‘stars’.

'I would not change you for the world but I would change the world for you'. Wall Works: Texts generated from conversations with staff and patients that reflect aspirations and positive thoughts. Liz Peden from the Gorbals Art Project has gathered a series of inspirational quotations that connect or relate to health and wellbeing in it’s broadest sense. Peter McCaughey, with some of the staff, including Ann Duffy and Mary McAuley from Specialist Children’s Services, considered the quotations and where they might be located in the new building. It was suggested as part of this process that staff, who will work in the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre, will be invited to supply a favourite aphorism or short quotation that would be relevant and inspiring in their working environment and the patients’ health centre. An example of a suggestion for a quotation came from a mother who was in the CAMHS reception in the Two Max building, when WAVEparticle was there consulting about the art strategy.

Beautiful Vinyl Landscapes: Following conversations with John Goldie, (Head of Addiction Services for the Community Addiction Team) and Kim McGivney, (the nurse for the Community Addiction Team), it was decided to choose a wall in the Addiction Services Unit to place an image of a beautiful Scottish landscape.

WAVEparticle had installed in Eastgate, the headquarters for Community Safety Glasgow a series of beautiful wall based landscapes, accompanied with printed postcards providing the instructions on a walking route as to how to get there. John (Goldie) suggested this could link to the walking group that exists within the Recovery unit - there is a Recovery climbing group working with the occupational therapists and the Glasgow Climbing Centre.

Getting there Head west on the M8, then over the Erskine Bridge to the A82. There’s even a drive through coffee shop just after Dumbarton! Wind your way along Loch Lomond to Crianlarich. Turning right onto the A85, parking is available in the lay-by after approx 2 miles. Crianlarich is also served by trains from Queen Street, and City Link buses.

WAVEparticle conducted in-depth interviews with a number of staff on-site to gather response to the ideas for the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. Comments Suggestions and Ideas Kim McGivney: Nurse with the Community Addictions Team, when asked if she had seen anything in other building that she liked, Kim said that she had come across Scottish landscape images in other buildings and found these images to be particularly calming and suggested they may work well within the Addictions Area of the new building. John Goldie: Head of Addictions Services, John was enthusiastic about the possibility of an entire wall in the Addictions Unit of the new building being given over to an image of a beautiful Scottish landscape, along with instructions as to how to get there. Mary McAuley: Project Manager, Specialist Children’s Services, sat with Peter (McCaughey), Ann Duffy and Liz Peden to consider quotations for wall texts and where / in what departments in the new building, certain texts might be particularly apposite.

Art Strategy / Artworks Development and Follow-Up Ongoing Development and Follow-Up: based on the feedback from the staff and patients we spoke to there are proposals to take forward further engagement with patients and staff around the artworks for the New Gorbals Health & Care Centre. These include: • initiate a 1-day residency in Two Max to specifically workshop with the Community Addictions Team. • a WAVEparticle team visit to the Recovery Café at the Adelphi Centre one Friday evening from 5.30 to 8pm to film video portraits. John Goldie indicated that other funding may be available to make a bespoke collection of portraits for the Addiction Area at the new health centre, capturing the aspirational stories of people in recovery. • progress an idea discussed with a number of staff for an artist-in-residence within the Addictions Area of the new building when it’s opened, (this would need additional time and budget). • organise workshops with local schoolchildren to create small permanent mosaics for the Specialist Children’s Services courtyard & garden area.
