The Wauconda Park District Board of Commissioners will meet during the summer months on June 12th, July 17th, and August 14th.

Dear Residents, Accreditation - I am pleased to announce that our District recently received Accreditation status in Risk Management from the Park District Risk Management Agency (PDRMA). PDRMA is a risk management agency for a pool of over 150 Park, Forest, and Special Recreation Districts in Illinois. Accreditation is the highest level of achievement that a PDRMA member can attain. The accreditation process measures Park District performance against established agencies, national safety and risk management standards. This recognition for our District is a testament to the quality and safety of its recreational programs, facilities, and events. Our staff is dedicated to providing our residents with safe environments to enjoy their leisure pursuits. New Partnership - One of our goals is to continue to look for ways to provide our residents with additional recreational opportunities at affordable prices that may not be found within our District boundaries. This summer we have formed a Partnership with the Mundelein Park District to offer our residents a reduced rate on a season pass to their Barefoot Bay Aquatic Center along with a discount coupon for Steeplechase Golf Course. Check out page 20 for all the details. We feel this partnership is a win-win for everyone. Park Chats - This summer our Board of Commissioners are rolling out a new program called “Park Chats”. These chats will take place at four parks this summer. We encourage residents to stop by if we are in your neighborhood and join us for an informal chat. We would love to hear your ideas and thoughts on the District. Snacks and activities will be provided. Check out page 14 for more details on this opportunity. Wauconda Fest – “Kudos” to all of you who voted Wauconda Fest the Best Fest in the Daily Herald’s Readers Choice poll. Our Fest Committee was thrilled to receive this news. We can’t thank you enough for your support. We can’t wait to see everyone at this year’s Fest (June21-24). Also congratulations to all of the other Wauconda winners. I encourage you to look through our program guide to check out all the classes and events we have scheduled for the summer. I am sure that you will find something that interests you. If at any time you have any questions or concerns regarding District operations, please feel free to contact me. Enjoy your summer. In Play, Nancy Nancy M. Burton Director of Parks & Recreation

The American Red Cross offers five comprehensive course levels that teach you, your child or other family members how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level of learn-to-swim also includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress. All lessons are taught at Beach Park located at 112 Park Street.

Swim Lessons

Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Lessons

The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills and meeting minimum age requirements. Skill assessments will be done the first day of class and any adjustments will be made at that time. Swim lessons are held Monday through Thursday with Friday left open for make-up days only. The first rain out will be used as the session’s safety day and class will be held for all levels but Infants. If another rain out occurs, the class will be made up on Friday. Red Cross certificate is issued at the successful completion of each skill level. The beach is closed during morning swim lessons. All persons, including parents and/or guests are not permitted on the beach during this time. Persons may observe classes from behind the fence line or from inside the beach house as the children who participate in our swim lessons become easily distracted and this will prevent any class disruptions. At the completion of class parents and students must leave the beach area immediately unless they possess a beach pass or pay the daily rate.

Session I - June 4 - June 15

Week 1- June 4-8: Buggin’ out in a Bug’s Life Planet School’s out and it’s time to “bug out” on a planet full of bugs. There’s a buzz about this planet that things are creeping, crawling and hopping with such activities as a cootie race, and bug bingo as you spend a week building a web of camp friends. Week 2-June 11-15: Tropical Paradise Planet The planet Tropical Paradise is a great place to start this week’s camp adventure. This planet has a great beach to sit under the palm trees in the cool breeze sipping refreshing fruit smoothies with leis hanging from our shoulders. The beach will also be a great place for a game of aloha volley beach ball.

Session II - June 18 - June 29

Week 1-June 18-22: Treasure Hunters Planet Indiana Jones had once visited this planet and found that it was worth the trip since it is full of treasures. You’ll find that it is good for scavenging, geocaching, and treasure chests. Clues to solve a mystery of who stole the jewels and many other hunt games will add to the fun. Week 2-June 25-29: A Year’s Worth of Holidays Planet Shamrocks, hearts, colored eggs, jack-o-lanterns, groundhogs and turkeys adorn the landscape of Celebration Planet. Where we can celebrate all the holidays during our week’s visit. Birthdays qualify as a holiday so it will be everyone’s birthday with streamers, balloons, cupcakes, and a piñata.

Session III - July 2 - July 13 (No Camp on July 4)

Week 1- July 2-6: Stars and Stripes Planet Men in astronaut suits stuck the pole of the United States Flag on the surface of what appeared to resemble a planet. We will stop by even if it isn’t a planet and we’ll make our own U.S. Flag with red, white and blue handprints, create a patri-botic robot, and play flag tag relay. Maybe we can bring back some moon dust? Week 2- July 9-13: All Ball Planet This perfectly round planet offers fun such as juggling, volleyball, golf, bocce ball, jacks ball, popcorn balls, and maybe even “ball” room dancing. Pick a sport to play and then reach into a bag to pick out a token that shows the ball you use to play that sport. Play baseball using a kickball. Thank goodness we didn’t pick the bowling ball token.

Session IV - July 16 - July 27

Camp Wauconda

This summer, we are preparing to takeoff into a galaxy of camp fun. Please climb aboard our Camp Wauconda spaceship for an exciting summer adventure.

23

Week 1-July 16-20: Rock star/Music Makers Planet This is the noisiest planet in the whole galaxy and that is why we want to spend the week there. There will be plenty of instruments to make a band and a music video but the campers will need to become the rock stars. We will create our own version of Stomp using trash can lids, sticks, and other things. We will end our week with a “dress your counselor up like a rock star” day. Week 2-July 23-27: Game show Mania Planet Nickelodeon’s Double Dare, Are you Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, Family Feud, Let’s Make a Deal, Jeopardy. Are you game? Become a contestant and join us on this planet. Not only will we be participating in these games but we will also make our own Me-opoly game board and game pieces.

Session V - July 30 - August 10

Week 1-July 30-August 3: Under the Sea Planet Put on your goggles and snorkel when we land on this planet. Anyone up for a game of Sharks and Minnows? Bring your underwater camera because we will see the Little Mermaid and Nemo. We will make colorful sea creatures, a magnifying water scope and a carp windsock. Week 2-August 6-10: Under the Big Top Planet This planet has a large tent covering all the activity that will be going on this last week of camp as we play acrobat knockdown, elephant stomp, and beanbag throw. There will be animals made out of balloons, face painting, funny photos, pie in the face game and a stuffed animal petting zoo. We will be leaving this planet a day early so that we can return to Bangs Lake for our all camp Beach Bash.

As We Grow Preschool

Our preschool program is intended to help stimulate your child’s social, emotional, and creative development. Our program emphasizes socialization and learning through play. Classroom activities encourage problem solving, creativity, self-expression, as well as academics; and enable children to explore in a room filled with warmth, affection, and respect for others. It is the preschool environment where children learn to respect the authority of adults other than their parents. Friendship, sharing, and cooperation are modeled and practiced on a daily basis. The children participate in all types of learning including art, music, creative play, cooking, poetry, and science. Through carpet time, direct instruction, hands-on learning and free-time activities, the children are exposed to a curriculum that enhances their creativity and also provides a positive atmosphere for learning.
