THURLITH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL, ECSS-NORTHERN BAHR EL GHAZAL INTERNAL PROVINCE - PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR TEACHING MATERIALS FOR ORPHANS & STREET CHILDREN

Project description This Project is for the provision of teaching materials for two linked schools, one Primary and one Secondary, specifically dedicated to the many vulnerable children of the Northern Bahr el Ghazal Internal Province of the ECSS. The school has been running for one year with limited teaching materials, and the aim is to provide adequate materials for the future. As the school year has already started, the Project request is “as soon as possible”. A grant total of $ 6786 is sought, calculated as set out below. The project period is 12 months although the furniture will of course last longer.

Background information On 23rd February 2017, Northern Bahr el Ghazal Internal Province through education Director for orphans and street children opened Thurlith Primary School in Akon town, Awan Chan County, Gogrial State as a free school for the large numbers of vulnerable children on the streets of towns in the Internal Province, many of whom are orphans who did not know their relative. And on 30/Mar/2017 The Most Rev. Moses Deng Bol, Archbishop of Northern Bahr el Ghazal Internal Province and the Bishop of Wau Diocese has come for an official dedication of Thurlith Primary school for orphans and street children. The dedication ceremony was attended by County commissioner, Education coordinator and community chief representative. Akon is approximately about 100 miles north of Wau, we selected it to be the base of the orphans and street children schools for the sake of security reasons or purposes so that the school should be far away from the main town which usual targeted by rebel and unknown gunmen, we could made it far in order to avoid the children’s frequent hearing sound of heavy artillery over and over the people in the most main towns of South Sudan. The aim is to provide a dedicated school in one location specifically for the orphans and street children of the towns of Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Providing a school is an alternative to just trying to return children to relatives who are unable to support them, or, in many cases, are unknown. The number of the children we have enrolled in the school for the academic year 2017 was 279 pupils both boys and girls in p1-p5, nursery and level 1-2 And this year primary school have 350 in total but we are not sure whether there will be any information about the children on street that would be reported to us.

The level of the school this year is from p1-p6, nursery and an accelerated learning program (ALP) has two classes level 1 and level 2. We have introduced these educational system to help the children who had failed to get education early so that they catch up their basic education within four years. There were 12 teachers and 5 supporting staff (cooks and security guards) running the school for an academic year 2017-2018 Currently, pupils are enrolled in three educational categories according to their age group and the level of education they already had: 1. We have enrolled children from 3-6 years for nursery school. 2. We enrolled children from 7-13 years in primary education system. 3. And enrolled the children from 14 and above in accelerated learning program (alternative education program) to help them catch up their basic education within four years. There is 13 teachers and 7 supporting staff (5 cooks and 2 security guards) currently running the school for the academic year 2018-2019. The School is continuing well and we have introduced a Secondary School this year for the same purpose so that pupils can continue with their studies after completing Primary level and also help orphans and the children from poor parents who failed to educate their children. We have 3 classes for Secondary school and the total of registered students at the school currently is 67 and registration is still open for anyone up to the midst of this month. We have carefully selected 9 Qualified Teachers in professional skills of different specializations, who have more experiences in teaching methods and educational system which enable them to help students by applying easier methods of quick understanding to the different subjects and comprehensive abilities of learning skills. We are lucky to get such qualified people but we are worried of their long lasting sustainability. Finally, we appeal for $ 313 as monthly incentives of both primary and secondary school staff which will equate to $ 3756 per year.
