Why buy Pure Catskills?

When you make a purchase from Pure Catskills farmers, foresters and businesses you support a rural economy, protect the working landscapes, preserve water quality, and ensure that small communities in the Catskills survive.

It protects the environment. Well-managed farms and businesses help keep the soil fertile and the water clean, which is critical to the ecosystems that plants, animals and humans inhabit.

It preserves the working landscape. Protecting the working landscapes in the Catskills ensures the delivery of over one billion gallons a day of clean, fresh drinking water to nine million New York residents.

It’s part of our culture. Our culture is rich with music, art and literature that have drawn from the values instilled through working the landscape. Helping our farmers, woodworkers and other local businesses stay profitable is an essential part of our cultural heritage.

It is an investment in the future. Supporting a safe, local food system enables us to feed ourselves for generations to come.

About Pure Catskills

Pure Catskills is a regional, buy local campaign developed by the Watershed Agricultural Council to improve the economic viability of the local community, sustain the working landscapes of the Catskills and preserve water quality in the NYC Watershed region.

Pure Catskills works to promote hundreds of farm, forest and local businesses throughout Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties in New York State.

ABOUT THE WATERSHED AGRICULTURAL COUNCIL

The Watershed Agricultural Council (WAC) works with farm and forest landowners in the NYC Watershed region to protect water quality on behalf of more than nine million New York residents. The WAC uses Whole Farms Plans, Forest Management Plans and Conservation Easements to help farmers, forest professionals and private landholders address water pollution concerns on properties located in the Croton and Catskill/ Delaware Watersheds.

The Watershed Agricultural Council’s mission is to promote the economic viability of agriculture and forestry, the protection of water quality, and the conservation of working landscapes through strong local leadership and sustainable public-private partnerships.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

Visit nycwatershed.org for more information about the four key programs. For questions or other inquires contact communications@ nycwatershed.org or at (607) 8657090.

2023–2024 Guide to Pure Catskills Products

Welcome to the 2023-2024 Guide to Pure Catskills Products, your onestop source for where to eat, drink, shop, stay and play in the Catskills! The pages of this publication showcase over 350 farm and forest-based businesses, restaurants, local artisans, other nonprofit organizations, activities and accommodations located throughout Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties in New York State.

Community is the root from which the Pure Catskills initiative started and continues to grow from. Our membership, as shown throughout this Guide, has reached 350 for the first time since we launched in 2004. Pure Catskills has always been a trusted resource for Catskills residents and visitors alike, but more than that, we continue to be a trusted space for businesses (old and new) to be a part of something bigger and to market their work, products and story. It is also a testament to our farmers that grow and produce high-quality food, and to the consumers who value knowing where their food comes from.

This year, we are proud to highlight our Pure Catskills community through multiple lenses. On each county map you will find a featured town that lists local farms and products, places to eat and stay, places to shop, support organizations, and activities and events. You’ll also find a cultivation of stories from farmers, producers, makers and chefs. We encourage you to shop from Red Kill Mountain Homestead Farms where you can purchase a variety of preserved goods, and River Breeze Alpacas where you can shop for all your raw fiber necessities. If you’re looking for places to eat, visit The Kaatskeller and Maggie’s Krooked Café two restaurants serving locally sourced food year-round. These features, along with all our member listings, are what makes this region so special.

Supporting farms and forest businesses, protecting water quality, and preserving the pristine environment of the NYC Watershed region is our way of life. Visit purecatskills.com for upcoming events, extended member listings, wholesale information, member news and additional resources. Please contact us with any questions regarding Pure Catskills at purecatskills@nycwatershed.org or (607) 865-7090.

Thank you for supporting Pure Catskills by picking up this magazine, and thank you for supporting our members by eating, drinking, shopping, staying and playing here.

info@the607csa.com

The 607 CSA is a multi-farm, collaborative, whole-diet CSA celebrating the Catskills' tradition of small-scale family farming. In addition to our four collaborating vegetable farms, who provide a weekly or bi-weekly vegetable share, we offer season-long shares of pastured meat, eggs, dairy and more, as well as add-ons from more than 35 additional neighboring farms and food businesses allowing you to customize your share weekly. We offer sliding scale pricing, payment plans, and we now accept SNAP benefits. You can also contribute to our Food Justice Programs, which provide healthy food to people in need, both upstate and down. We believe that by participating in an economy of collaboration rather than scale, area farms can feed our communities while continuing to produce the most delicious food in NYS! the607csa.com

Ancestral Family Tradition

Miller is an old name in Bovina, with the first Miller, David, arriving around 1815 from the Scottish Borders. Millers owned, resided and/or leased on Miller Avenue from 1832 to 1973. Miller Avenue is a 1 1/2 mile town road connecting Bramley and Lee Hollow to County Route 6 and the Bovina Center hamlet.

In 1832, William Miller, the brother of David, took a lease on a section of land, approx. 144 acres from Edward P. Livingston. His rent included 20 bushels of wheat, two fowls and one day riding (basically a day of labor on the Livingston estate). In 1859, Miller purchased the property from Livingston’s heir, Louisa Livingston for $575. In April of 1862, the property ownership fell to William’s sons, William Junior and Berry Shaw Miller. The property descended through to Berry Shaw Miller’s grandson, Mural 0. Miller, who was a second cousin of Anna Bell Barnhart LaFever. In 1973, it was sold out of the Miller family until 1999 when it was purchased by Duane LaFever, a third great-grandson of William Miller and grandson of Anna Bell Barnhart LaFever.

Duane and his wife Karen, along with their two sons, Cody and Cullen, continue an ancestral family tradition by producing maple syrup on the 104 acre property. Remnants of

the original sugar house foundation can still be seen today, as well as the barn and rock foundation of what was an old home. Daffodils still come up in the spring around the foundation stones.

From the 2450 taps on the property, Maplewood Farm & Orchard produces 100% pure maple syrup, maple candies and smooth as silk maple cream, as well as many other delicious products such as peppered maple mustard, maple apple pumpkin spread, candied nuts, granola, lollipops, cotton candy, oatmeal and buttermilk pancake mixes. Karen hand-makes these products in her certified Confectionery Kitchen and Gift Shoppe in Delhi. In joint production with maple products, the LaFevers also tend an apple orchard. We have over 500 apple trees. There are 25 varieties to pick including Macintosh, Macon, Honeycrisp and Wellington, just to name a few. The sugar house, pumpkin and U-Pick apple orchard are open weekends 10AM–4PM from September 16th–October 9th 2023. Maple Weekends are the last two weekends in March 2024, 9AM–3PM. Family Farm Day, Sat. August 26th, 2023 10AM–4PM. Appointments are available for visits and purchasing of maple products.

the Kaatskeller

Livingston Manor, NY

The Kaatskeller was opened in 2017 by Jon Westergreen and Chris Tierney along with the help of a few great partners. Our vision was to offer locally inspired wood fired pizzas, salads, sides and cocktails, to be enjoyed in the outdoors under twinkling lights with the glamour of the bygone resort era and the current Catskills vibe.

Located on Main Street in Livingston Manor, the main building is set back on the property which is very unusual for a main street property and adds to the special ambience.

The menu direction is simple, but stands out with the use of high-quality, fresh ingredients. Many of the ingredients are sourced locally from Pure Catskills members farms and wild foraged. Such as ramps used in our housemade pesto blended with local kale, or Hemlock pine used for an infusion to make our Negronis.

The Kaatskeller is open year-round with indoor bar and dining when weather does not permit outdoor dining. We also offer the venue for private events.

river breeze alpacas

downsville, NY

Afterbeing mesmerized by llamas at a nearby farm, I became certain that llamas would be a part of my life. Full of personality: tall with long necks, soft, flowing fiber, large, full, soulful eyes and perfectly shaped banana ears that let you know you’ve got their attention. What’s not to love?

After doing my homework, gathering supplies and prepping the space, I acquired two friendly males. They were beautiful lawn ornaments, curious companions, and easy keepers. Then just like that, two quickly became four, the more the merrier! After some time passed, it seemed to be both logical and adventurous to add alpacas to the group: five charming fiber boys! Cute, compact, fuzzy and inquisitive, my hobby farm was underway.

The fiber from both llamas and alpacas is hypoallergenic, soft, warm and strong. Llamas and alpacas are shorn once a year, and I have their fiber processed at a nearby mill to be used for knitting, needle felting, wet felting and weaving. Some of my Pure Catskills products include felted paintings, ornaments, wet felted soap, all natural drier balls, alpaca 'poo fertilizer, nesting balls for your backyard birds, yarn, rug yarn, roving and raw fiber.

I also have a selection of Fairtrade alpaca products imported from Peru. Fairtrade ensures fair trade terms for farmers and buyers, protects workers’ rights and provides a framework for producers to build thriving farms and organizations. You will find alpaca socks, gloves, scarves, hats, head bands, keychains, pens, stuffed animals and cozy throws.

River Breeze Alpacas is a proud member of Pure Catskills!

Buying local goods not only supports farmers and artisans in our communities, but it also showcases the creativity and dedication essential to producing the products they sell. You’ll find many unique products while supporting the Pure Catskills members, shop local!

River Breeze Alpaca products may be purchased at the Covered Bridge Antiques in Downsville, NY, a seasonal shop. You’re also invited to visit my website at riverbreeze.net , where you will find felting classes, products for sale and felting and farm photos.

MAGGIE'S KROOKED CAFE

Tannersville, NY

Step inside Maggie’s Krooked Cafe and inhale air redolent with aromas of dream-come-true breakfast fare— crispy sweet pancakes, french toast, tasty eggs benedict, savory rancheros, home baked muffins, the best coffee on the mountaintop, plus a selection of pastries from the very best bakeries, fresh juices and smoothies. The walls are covered with art Maggie collects and art that Maggie makes, as well as historic photographs depicting life here in its many permutations. Maggie’s is a place that connects you to and enriches you with the charm and spirit of this unique mountain community. It is a soft landing place in a rugged landscape.

Maggie arrived here as a very young woman in 1985. Her business acumen and interior decorating skills had already created a thriving bed and breakfast spot in a beautiful Victorian mansion she renovated herself. When the space that is now her Krooked Cafe became available, she instantly saw its value and potential. It soon became the warm and vibrant environment it is now—offering a feast both for the palate and the eye.

Maggie owns the building that houses the cafe. This grand old edifice dominates Main Street. Maggie contributes to the community by faithfully sending treats to all the cast and crew of all the high school productions, and all the luminaries who perform at the two impressive theaters in town, and

all the high school athletic competitions. She also sees to it that those less fortunate will always have a decent meal, a cup of coffee, or a doughnut, because it is her pleasure to serve. There are chefs who simply want to cook, but have less impulse to insure the happiness and comfort of their diners. Maggie is not that sort. Her chief impulse is to create happiness. Her skillets and ovens are her canvases. Her perfectly presented meals are her art. Her payment is the pleasure and contentment people find there, in her beautiful dining room, where they are encouraged to come and stay, and above all, enjoy.
