Answer: Due to demand, Black Hawks season ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase a reserved space in the lot closest to Young Arena for every game. The front office has received many questions about this, so here are some important details: -No, not every spot in this lot will be reserved. -Handicapped spots may not be reserved and will still be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Send your “Tawk to Us” messages to info@waterlooblackhawks.com. We reserve the right to shorten comments/questions in order to fit the space available, in addition to publishing first and last names.

-An attendant will be on duty to assist those who are taking advantage of this opportunity. The lot will be staffed until one hour after puck drop. -Pricing divides out to just $6 per game per car. That is $180 per season. If you have additional questions or would like to reserve one of the limited available spaces, please call the Black Hawks’ front office and ask for Evan Schludecker.

Q uestion: I missed Hawky Havoc. W h ere do I g et my season tickets? – Ro b in M. Answer: Season tickets may be picked up from the Black Hawks front office during normal business hours. On October 8th, we will set up a special season ticket pickup table inside the arena, near the season ticket holder entrance (east end, street level near the flagpole). After the home opener, season ticket holders picking up their tickets on a game night should visit the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office.

AND N OTA B L E DATES October 16, 1983

Rookie Rod Taylor scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Black Hawks clipped the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 5-4. During his regular season career over three seasons in Waterloo, Taylor accumulated a team record 115 goals. October 18, 2013

First-year defenseman Hayden Shaw scored 1:40 into an extra period to lift Waterloo to a 4-3 win against the Green Bay Gamblers. Fellow defenseman Mark Friedman also scored during the game, as did forwards Zach Sanford and Patrick Russell. Since then, Sanford and Russell have signed NHL contracts, Friedman has been drafted, and Shaw has won an NCAA Championship.

October 24, 1970

After Waterloo’s Iowa Stars spent one season in the professional Central Hockey League, the Black Hawks returned to United States Hockey League action. Paul Johnson had a goal and two assists, but Waterloo fell, 7-3, in their first game of the season, on the road against the Marquette Iron Rangers.

October 25, 1987

The Hawks lost a 4-3 heartbreaker at home against the Sioux City Musketeers. It looked like Waterloo’s Jon Rose had tied the game with 24 seconds remaining, but referee Scott Brand ruled “no goal.”

October 30, 1971

The Waterloo Courier called it the worst defeat in Black Hawks history. Waterloo fell to the U.S. National Team 15-1 at McElroy Auditorium. As it turns out, Team USA was pretty good and went on to win the silver medal during the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo, Japan less than four months later.

After a very good summer, the new season is finally here, and you could say we are all excited. The start of the season has been a good one so far.

CAPTAINS CORNER

From day one, all the guys have bonded well together. The returners have done a great job of showing the newcomers what playing in the USHL really means. All of the new guys are starting to learn what the Waterloo Black Hawks are all about.

BY NICK SWANEY

Nick Swaney made his first appearance for the Black Hawks as an affiliate during the 2013/14 season. He scored a goal in his very first game for Waterloo and has continued to put the puck in the net ever since. During 2015/16, the Minnesota-Duluth recruit led the Hawks with 30 goals.

With the home opener approaching, everyone is excited. I can still remember the home opener from last year.  It stands out just how loud Young Arena was. With that being said, being able to play in front of the best fans is really something special. From the cowbells ringing, to the goal horn going off, or just everything in between, it’s something we are looking forward to. After coming up a game short of reaching the Clark Cup Finals last year, we are all very motivated to make the Clark Cup Finals this year. This is just the beginning of the long journey with the Black Hawks this season, and we are all very happy to be back in Party Town.

In late September, Mikey Anderson continued a Waterloo Black Hawks’ tradition established in 2012. Since USA Hockey’s All-American Prospects Game was first played that year, a Waterloo Black Hawks player has participated in the top showcase for U.S.-born skaters who are eligible for the following summer’s NHL Draft. This year, the event was held in Philadelphia at Wells Fargo Center, home of the Flyers. “It was awesome,” Anderson said. “It was a first-class event. USA Hockey did a great job putting it together. We were there for just a short period of time, but…I think it was one of the best hockey experiences I’ve had.” The second-year defenseman whirled into the “City of Brotherly Love” for just over 24 hours, all during the week the Black Hawks were preparing for the first game of the United States Hockey League regular season. Even in the limited time available, Anderson had the opportunity to reconnect with many players he had skated with before.

“We had breakfast together… we’d eat all the meals together as a big group, and when we weren’t at the rink, we’d have some down time at the hotel, so it was nice to see some of the guys.” Anderson played on a team coached by former Flyers star John LeClair. The roster included Brannon McManus of the Omaha Lancers, as well as Ryan Poehling, who played briefly for the Lincoln Stars last spring and is now attending St. Cloud State University. All three will eventually find their way to colleges in Minnesota: Andersonat MinnesotaDuluth and McManus to the

University of Minnesota. In total, nine players on the two rosters – including Anderson – are from the Gopher State. Players are chosen for the All-American Prospects Game by USA Hockey and NHL Central Scouting. Every NHL team was represented during the event in Philadelphia, most by more than one scout or executive. “We all just knew that they were there,” said Anderson, “but for the most part…I think everyone was just going out there and playing.” When the puck dropped, Team LeClair (wearing white) took a 2-1 lead in the first period and eventually rolled on to a 6-4 win. Anderson finished the game +1. Flying faster than a slap shot, he was back in Waterloo preparing for the season opener after leaving an impression and creating indelible memories. “Overall it was just a lot of fun and a lot of good players, and I definitely think that

they’ve got to keep doing that event.” As long as they do, the Black Hawks expect to continue the tradition of being represented among hockey’s all-American prospects.
