GAS VALVE The gas control valve is part of the burner control module. This unit operates pilot and as a thermostat by turning off the burner after the water reaches the desired temperature. Hence, the gas inlet connects to the gas control valve and controls the gas flow to the unit. Therefore, this part allows the pilot to be ignited and heat the thermocouple to send a signal to the gas control valve, which allows the burner to operate.

Before any repair, you must purchase the correct gas control valve replacement by checking the model, brand, and type of water heater. Also, you can take the original valve with you to the hardware or gas supply store.

TURN OFF THE GAS SUPPLY

Before disassembling your appliance, turn off the gas to shut off the supply to the water heater. Wear protective clothing and turn off the old gas valve as well.

TURN OFF THE WATER SUPPLY

Similarly, shut off the water supply to the heater and drain any remaining water in the heater tank.

This step varies according to the water heater model and brand. However, mostly, you have to use the tools mentioned above. Remember the order in which the parts go into the water heater assembly. Newer models may have wires connected to the gas control valve, and their function is to turn off the appliance when a flash fire occurs. These wires are essential; therefore, you must reinstall them after replacing the valve.

Before installing the new gas control valve, remember the same order in which you removed the old one. Then, fasten well all valve parts to prevent leaks. Turn the water and gas supply back on to check if you see the valve working properly.
