Steeped in history

Welcome to our April-June Brochure. Focusing on Irish history, commemoration is the theme for this quarter. It is apt that the Watergate is hosting this season of commemoration as Parliament Street is steeped in history. Almost adjacent to the Watergate number 36 was the RIC barracks and home to the Head Constable. On the opposite side of the street is Rothe House, headquarters of Conradh na Gaelige, where Thomas McDonagh, a signatory of 1916 Proclamation, served as secretary. The street also included the homes of the De Loughrey and Stallard families, both prominent in the Volunteer Movement. Stallards were likewise the owners of the first cinema opened in Kilkenny in 1914. Worth noting is that the pioneering local newspaper the Kilkenny People was first published in Parliament Street in 1897.

THE KILKENNY CONNECTION

Local historian and author Jim Maher explores the story of 1916 in a musical drama ‘They Stood By Pearse.’ Focusing on the Kilkenny connection this story introduces us to Patrick Bealin,

Thomas Mac Donagh

John Kealy Thomas MacDonagh and Fr Albert, a Capuchin priest, reared in Kilkenny.

THE ROLE OF THE WOMAN

During the first week of May, and in conjunction with the Kilkenny Borough Council, we present three works delving into Irish political and social history. ‘Midwives of the Nation’ is a theatrical exploration recording the contribution of women to the events of 1916 who are often ignored by commentators. You are invited to meet our fearless heroines Elizabeth O'Farrell, Margaret Skinnider, Countess Markievicz and Winnie

Carnie. These women were the dispatchers, the doctors, the firstaiders, the snipers, the tea makers, the gun runners..... As well as an evening show there will be a special daytime performance to facilitate schools.

Count John McCormack

Kilkenny’s Watergate Theatre will be the venue this May for the premiere of Myles Dungan's new 1916 show – The Count, The Countess & The Tommy. The show, starring soloist Simon Morgan, as seen on RTE's Late Late Show, centres on the life and music of the celebrated Irish tenor Count John McCormack, and features some of the bestknown songs of a hundred years ago.

BIG MICK

May also sees the staging of ‘The Big Fellow’ featuring the life of Michael Collins from his days as a volunteer in the GPO, to his time as a military leader. More than a straightforward dramatisation of his life, this is also the story of his biographer, the literary genius Frank O’Connor. As a timid adolescent O’ Connor, fighting against Collins' Free State forces, witnessed traumatic scenes and is now seeking reparation.

TRANSLATIONS The Watergate is delighted to announce that our first coproduction with Barnstorm Theatre will be Brian Friel’s much acclaimed masterpiece ‘Translations’. Brian Friel stated that “Translations is a play about language and only about language".

Yet it deals with many issues covering a wide spectrum of Irish life, encompassing communication, history and cultural imperialism. With vigour, Friel addresses the political landscape and the language questions in modern-day Northern Ireland. Translations will be staged in April

Dublin singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh was raised on Irish music and has been singing Irish folk songs since he was three years old. He learned to play the piano by ear when he was five and his love and passion for Luke Kelly’s music led him to learn to play the 5 string long neck banjo in 2001. Over the past twelve years he has amazed audiences following powerful sell-out performances in prominent Irish venues such as Vicar Street & the Cork Opera House. He is joined on stage by one of Irelands leading guitarist/composers, Michael Howard and traditional musician Joe Finn on Uilleann pipes, Whistle, Flute & fiddle.

This musical drama commemorates the men and women of 1916. It is different to other 1916 productions because it especially honours three men connected to Kilkenny who were amongst the republican dead, Patrick Bealin, Castlecomer, John Kealy, John Street and Thomas MacDonagh. Featured also is Father Albert, the Capuchin priest, reared in Kilkenny, who ministered to the leaders before their executions. A mixed choir, a host of musicians, solo singers and actors from Dublin, Muine Bheag and Kilkenny present this beautiful but moving story.

TEDDY THOMPSON & KELLY JONES Teddy Thompson and acclaimed American singer Kelly Jones release their stunning harmony duet collaboration ‘Little Windows’ on Cooking Vinyl April 1st, 2016. They will appear at The Watergate Theatre on Sunday May 1st as part of the Smithwick’s Kilkenny Roots Festival. Teddy and Kelly first sang together on a George Jones track at LA’s Club Largo in 2011. It was love at first note and not long after they embarked on a bi-coastal musical relationship (she and LA, he in NYC) writing the songs that would become ‘Little Windows’ along with partner Bill DeMain. Inspired by the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke, the ten gorgeous songs that comprise this album explore the joy and sorrows of love and the vagaries of the human heart. In keeping with this classic sound, vocally reminiscent of Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, the album was recorded live to a 16 track tape machine by producer Mike Viola with Linda Thompson as executive producer.

Declan Gorman’s much-anticipated new play will come to The Watergate following its world premiere at the 2016 Drogheda Arts Festival. With original sound design by ex-Waterboys composer, Colin Blakey,The Big Fellow is a non-stop, edge-ofyour-seat theatrical adventure, laced with humour and scenes of daring and intrigue. It presents the compelling story of Michael Collins: his rise from unknown volunteer in the GPO to military leader who brought down an empire only to meet his untimely death at the hands of former comrades. Much more than a straightforward dramatisation of the life of a hero, however, this is also the story of his biographer, the literary genius Frank O’Connor, who witnessed traumatic scenes as a timid adolescent soldier fighting against Collins’ Free State forces, and is now seeking to make reparation. As The Big Fellow is conjured to unruly and mischievous life by his writer, the epic tale of the birth of a nation is re-lived by both men: the one who survived it and came to understand the disappointment that inevitably follows the dream, and the tragic hero who perished in his effort to broker a waking compromise. “Frank O’Connor is doing for Ireland what Chekhov did for Russia” William Butler Yeats
