Pitching in with quake repair work Kelly Deeks Crafar Crouch Construction has put its mark on the Marlborough region since the company was established in 1983. Crafar Crouch Construction is now providing its expertise to repairing the destroyed rail route connection between Picton and Lyttelton which suffered unprecedented damage in Kaikoura’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake last November. Crafar Crouch Construction is working directly with the Kiwirail team to get the railway operational as quickly as possible. The company is used to working to tight timeframes, but the urgency of this connection being restored has the earthworks team putting in some seriously long hours. “We are looking after them,” says Crafar Crouch Construction construction manager Mike Winkler. “Quality and safety are at the heart of everything we do. We strive to provide the best outcomes for our customers while ensuring the well-being of all involved, and our records on performance and safety are testament to this.” He says Crafar Crouch Construction is committed to the protection of its employees and others from accidental injury, and promotes occupational health, safety, and welfare. “The responsibility for safety is an integral part of our everyday work, so it is vital for every employee to share in our commitment to eliminate, minimise, or isolate unsafe acts and conditions by thinking safely and acting safely at all times.” Crafar Crouch Construction has approached the Kiwirail contract like it does all its projects, by
accepting the challenge, developing a solution, and creating value for its customers. “It’s our mission to provide the highest standard of problem solving capability and workmanship to every single project.” The Kaikoura quake has also resulted in an increased amount of winery work for Crafar Crouch Construction, which is working alongside other construction companies to get damaged tanks repaired as well as some wineries expanding to deal with the aftermath. Elsewhere in Marlborough, the region is expanding along with the population, and Crafar Crouch Construction is busy completing land development and subdivision projects around Blenheim. Crafar Crouch Construction is still growing itself after more than three decades in business. In December 2016, Crafar Crouch Construction was awarded the prestigious Marlborough District Council Marlborough Award, awarded to businesses or individuals who have contributed jobs or economic value to Marlborough. Like other centres, Marlborough is lacking in skilled tradesmen, so Crafar Crouch Construction is hot on the training of its junior staff, as well as looking to new people moving into the province. With more than 100 staff working across the company’s two sites in Blenheim and Picton, many employees are provided with opportunities for additional training and up-skilling. Crafar Crouch Construction supports major national charities such as the Cancer Society and National Heart Foundation, as well as providing sponsorship and support to several local organisations and individuals.
