Communication helps bring happiness Karen Phelps Recognising that building a new home can be a stressful experience for people if they are not kept fully informed every step of the way, Building Lifestyle NZ has focused its business heavily around communication, says company owner Richard Abbott. “It’s important that our clients really understand the build process. We have processes in place to ensure this but the most important part of achieving this is our staff and their ability to keep in contact with the client and ensure they are happy at all times,” he explains. The key staff member in this process is the company operations manager whose job is to back up the project manager and give the clients a point of contact for the project if they have any questions. Richard says this is particularly important for renovation projects where it is not uncommon for unknown factors to be uncovered during the build that clients need to be kept informed of. Richard has been building for over 10 years and founded Building Lifestyle NZ in 2011. He runs the company with wife Ana, who takes on a marketing and administration role. Along with being a qualified builder, Richard is a member of the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand and is also a licensed builder. The company is a member of Registered Master Builders. Building Lifestyle NZ focuses on new home builds and renovation projects. The company has its own special range of house designs to offer to clients but Richard says that it mainly completes design and build projects. “We specialise in helping people from start to finish. From an initial planning meeting, we then walk the client through each decision as they need to be made, guiding them on the most suitable building materials and the best use of space and light. “Once the design is finalised, the rest of the building process is made as straightforward as possible. We complete the council requirements, deal with surveyors, the geotechnical aspects of the project and assist when dealing with various engineers. “This ensures that their home is completed as quickly and with as little stress as possible,” says Richard. A key part of the build process is listening to clients. “There is no point in designing a home the client can’t afford to build. We listen to want they want to achieve then work with them to find realistic solutions to meet their needs. “For example, we recently completed a renovation project in Grey Lynn for a client

We managed to achieve a renovation she was really happy with, within her budget, by thinking outside the square and finding product options to suit.” Based in Drury, Building Lifestyle NZ works in Auckland Central and Waikato. It’s currently a busy market but the aim is to continue the expansion of the business in a sustainable way to ensure the focus on the primary client is always maintained. Most work is by referral and the company has even been nominated for this year’s Westpac Business Excellence Awards, testament to the effort the couple put into ensuring clients are always kept fully informed and happy every step of the way.
