High value in a beautifully polished concrete floor While concrete floors have long been used in commercial and industrial settings, such as factories, warehouses and offices, the value of a beautifully polished concrete floor is also increasingly being recognised in retail premises and up-market houses. An experienced concreter, Todd Horsburgh has used his expertise to perfect Floors Inc.’s exclusive concrete floor polishing system. “Using the best possible components, including grinding machines, diamond heads, surface densifiers, grouts and other products, we have calculated the optimum grinding and chemical application methodologies to create exquisite results,” Todd Horsburgh says. Floors Inc. staff work closely with their clients, including architects, builders and designers, to tailor a finish using different grinding and polishing levels to create a highly polished concrete floor to match their vision. A significant advantage of a polished concrete floor in a commercial situation is that the colour and aggregate characteristics of concrete can be specified to complement a premium brand’s retail colour scheme, product and service offerings. where,rather than achieving the polished look from a resin-based sealer, the concrete surface is ground with finer and finer diamonds until a high gloss look is achieved. The process mirrors that of a stone bench top being polished. The beauty of the polished concrete is best brought out with this process. In the grind and seal method, the concrete surface is first ground to reveal the desired level of aggregate. The concrete is then diamond ground again to a much finer standard and a fine and flat surface is revealed. The floor is finished with resin-based protective sealers, enhancing the natural colour of the concrete and achieving a high-gloss finish. “It’s not just the polished finish we’re concerned about. An exquisite concrete floor begins from the first pour. We work with quality concreters who we know and trust to ensure our clients have the best possible floor to create a high quality result.” Polished concrete floors help retain coolness in summer and warmth in winter, resulting in electricity savings while a high-gloss polished concrete floor can also increase the amount of reflected natural light in a room. “Polished concrete floors are the hardest, most durable floor surface you can install. All that’s required is a repolish, buff and reseal, where necessary, about every 10 years.”

A team of qualified staff and a commitment to a high standard of service has been the backbone of the continued growth of Cambridge company Aircon Direct. Owned by Ian Grant, the company supplies a full range of air conditioning systems, heat pumps, underfloor heating, pool heating, solar, refrigeration and ventilation systems for the domestic and commercial market throughout Waikato. Aircon Direct are official dealers for both Daikin and Panasonic heat pumps, but also install most other reputable brands. The company’s workload tends to be equally divided between the commercial and domestic sectors. Aircon Direct was involved with Livingstone Building Excellence in the construction of AGrowquip NZ Ltd’s substantially upgraded Hamilton workshop and showroom. The Agrowquip contract is one of several projects undertaken by Aircon for Livingstone Building Excellence. Ian Grant believes this relationship is the result of his company’s track record and quality workmanship. Aircon’s contract included the installation of a central ducted heating system in AGrowquip’s retail area and staff offices, a fresh air and extractor system in its common areas and the installation of Daikin high-wall heat pumps in its staff room. The popularity of heat pumps for both commercial and domestic applications keeps Aircon’s five installers and 2 apprentices busy. However, Ian Grant believes his company offers a point of difference when it comes to
after sales support. “There’s lot of competent people who can install heat pumps, but there’s not a lot of qualified people who can service and repair them. “We often have calls from people who had them installed as recently as two or three months ago and they have an issue,” Ian Grant says. “Our technicians are well qualified and experienced; we ensure our products and work standards are second to none and this is why we feel confident in offering a five year warranty on all of our workmanship.” As part of its on-going service, the company runs a reliable reminder system where clients are contacted to arrange a suitable time to service their heat pumps, air conditioners or ventilation systems. The life of a heat pump can be significantly reduced if it is not serviced regularly, but with servicing the efficiency of the unit is maintained, ensuring energy costs do not increase and performance is not degraded. Aircon Direct has a dedicated IQP approved refrigeration engineer who supplies, installs and commissions residential and commercial chillers and freezers, including servicing and repairing all types of R22, R32 and R410Abased air conditioners and air conditioning systems.
