Scarbro builds impressive portfolio Sue Russell Twenty years ago Auckland-based construction company Scarbro Construction was founded by three experienced construction personnel, Garry and Paul Scarborough and Peter de Nys. In the past two decades the company has proven its capability to deliver on a wide range of projects, from residential, fit-outs, commercial, industrial, education, retirement villages, heritage restorations, through to large-scale apartment blocks. Peter de Nys is one director of the company and has the role of construction manager. He says it is satisfying to look back on growing capability and capacity to the point where Scarbro Construction has been involved in some exciting builds in Auckland, straddling a wide range of modality in Auckland and throughout the country. One such example is the award-winning Engineering Structures Hall (Building 906) block at the University of Auckland. Completed in 2015 at the University’s Newmarket campus the Building Structures faciilty was the first purpose-built block on the inner-city campus. The four storey building is unique in that below its top floor are two separate structures containing offices and lecture rooms along with a ‘concrete testing structure’ housed within the fully enclosed testing hall. The largest of its type in the southern hemisphere its construction had to occur within a fixed time-frame allowing for its use as soon as the university opened its doors for its first semester last year. The building houses the largest concrete seismic testing facility in Australasia. Scarbro Construction worked with Australian firm Kane Construction who had built a similar facility at a university in Melbourne. The company has set the goal to continue to build a wide range of projects for various, large and small for all sectors. This determination Peter says will future-proof the company well beyond the current building boom. “We don’t want to be seen as specialising in a particular industry. We are also focusing on building relationships with local authorities and with growth sectors such as education and retirement housing,” says Peter. Scarbro Construction has a dedicated team of over 60 skilled staff, many of whom have been with

It has purposefully sought to employ rather than use contract staff. “It is definitely one of the reasons we have continued to evolve so positively. “The investment we make in employing a wide range of skilled construction operatives who carry the same philosophy and drive we do.” Scarbro Construction is one of four companies that form the Scarbro Group of Companies. Scarbro Residential has had a long history involved not only in new builds including multi-unit housing developments but also heritage restorations and high-end architecturally designed homes.
