Orange Hall project award winner Karen Phelps The refurbishment of a significant landmark heritage building – the Orange Coronation Hall on Auckland’s Newton Road – and a new mixed-use development on the same site, has resulted in the project winning the heritage award from the New Zealand Institute of Architecture. Brent Hore, who was working for Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects, the firm, which undertook the project in conjunction with Tonkin Zulaika Greer Architects and Dave Pearson Architects, says that the history of the hall was an important consideration in the design. The brick and plaster building was designed in 1922 by Arthur Sinclair-O’Connor. It was originally home to the Protestant ‘Loyal Order of Orangemen’ and was later transformed into a popular dance hall in the 1940s followed by a performing arts school and a church. Brent says that the design intent was to upgrade the hall and have the new development wrap around it. The original brick exterior of the hall was combined with a modern white interior. The new mixed-use building picks up the orange theme of the hall with sunscreens and projecting mullions while the curved curtain wall creates a dynamic contrast to the old hall. “The new building gently and respectfully wraps around the existing hall – creating a new sunny sheltered public plaza above street level. This pedestrian space is activated through visual transparency between the old and new. Full height windows are inserted into the old hall allowing
