Books and stories both are the most inseparable part of children’s lives. These are specifically written for children can be broadly categorized in two ways, one being the genre and the other being the age of the child. Books are the modern version of songs and stories which children use to listen from their grandparents and parents in earlier times. When the notebooks came into existence, then songs and folk tales were replaced by these newly designed books. The old tradition of telling stories have changed to reading out story novels aloud to the children. The late 19th and starting of the 20th century emerged as the Golden age of children’s literature as many reading materials for kids were published during this period and among them many are acknowledged as classics today. When talking about the two different sections of books for children then genre and age of the reader come into scene. In simpler terms, the genre may be defined as a technique, tone, content and length and there are six sub genres. There are picture books, traditional books, Fiction, Non-fiction, biography and autobiography, poetry and verse. Picture books comprise of mainly a concept that teach alphabets, counting and these are majorly wordless pages. Traditional literature includes folktales which consist of legends, customs, superstitions and beliefs of earlier people. This category may also have sub genres such as myths, fables, legends and fairy tales. Fiction only includes fantasy, realistic fiction and historical fiction. Unlike this, there is a non fiction segment too. Now landing to the age category of the children's books which also counts as an important segment for choosing them. Books for younger kids are written in very simple language, larger prints and have many illustrations as well. While for older children complex language, normal print and fewer illustrations are used. Chapter books are written for children from 7 to 12 years of age. Young adult fiction is written for children ranging from 12 to 18 years of age. Some of the most famous novels for children from 3 to 6 years of age are A Bad Case of Stripes, Always in Trouble, Amazing Grace, Belinda, the Ballerina, Bring on the Birds, Bullies Never Win, Dream Big- Little Pig, How I Became a pirate, I’am not Tired Yet, Library Lion, and many more exciting stories are available for children. It’s totally up to parents that children choose a right and appropriate novel for reading. Parents must keep in mind that the books for children must have a good vocabulary. Children must enhance their understanding of human interactions, relationships and also gives importance to others emotions. With the help of good books parents can try to inculcate good habits and values in their children. As these are specifically written for children so issues related to children are kept in mind while writing. Apart from this, as books are read aloud by parents to their kids so it is also kept in mind that parents do not have a problem in reading out. The text is usually large so that parents can read the written and printed text easily.
