Target Audience: School staff & community partners working with adolescents in Washtenaw County schools

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to young people who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support. Participants will first need to complete a 2-hour, self-paced online class before participating in this 4.5-hour, instructor-led videoconference.

High School Leadership Team Data Retreat

A 4-part series for the school year to support High School leadership teams, as well as connect the staff with other Washtenaw County secondary teachers and leaders. Advanced Restorative Practices: Family Group Decision Making

Target Audience: Educators SCECHs & SW CEUs: Pending Family group decision making (FGDM) is a process that provides families with an opportunity to bring together larger family networks—aunts, uncles, grandparents, neighbors, friends—to make important decisions that might otherwise be made by professionals. This process of engaging and empowering families to make their own decisions and plans for their family members’ well-being seems to lead to better outcomes, less conflict with professionals, more informal support and improved family functioning (Merkel-Holguin, Nixon & Burford, 2003).

Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) Training

Date: August 17 & August 18, 2023

Target Audience: Principals, Asst. principals, school mental health professionals, school resources officers, etc.

Under the CSTAG model, school-based multidisciplinary teams take a problem-solving approach by identifying students in need of assistance before their conflicts escalate into violence. A flexible case-by-case evaluation process is used that considers the individual circumstances and context of student behavior. CSTAG teams triage cases by gathering relevant information and using a decision tree to distinguish transient threats that can be easily resolved from substantive threats that pose a serious risk of violence.

Come learn about how to access the CMH 24-hour mobile crisis team, obtain training on the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, and review the countywide protocol used if a young person is referred to UM Psychiatric Emergency Services.

These introductory sessions will include a demonstration of the Behavioral Health Works (BhWorks) platform, complete with included assessments and screeners, as well as an overview of how Caring for Students (C4S) is to be implemented in schools Learn more about how to engage with these systems and begin monitoring supports provided to students

Restorative Practices Days 1 & 2

Day 1: Introduction to Restorative Practices focuses on key concepts of Restorative Practices and how they are used to build strong, healthy relationships, resolve challenges, and build social capital. The concepts involve reflection and awareness of one's self and one's practice.

Day 2: Using Circles Effectively applies fundamental processes of Restorative Practices and enables participants to practice techniques, including how to optimally utilize circles in any setting. Facilitated by Black Family Development, Inc., a licensed partner of the International Institute of Restorative Practices.
