News and Views from the Washington Waldorf School

A Letter from the Faculty Chair, Jennifer Page Dear WWS Community, On Thursday December 18 just before the winter break, the 5th grade was enjoying their library class. Midway through class, excited exclamations could be heard, as several students discovered the finishing board and pictures of our school renovation plans displayed there. Their teacher then heard several versions of: “Wow! Is this what our school is going to look like?” Moments later, the class hatched a plan to hold a bake sale the following day to raise money for the project. By 3:30 the next day, the class had raised $260 to support the capital campaign. Their excitement was emblematic of the excitement and anticipation that has been carried by so many over the past months. We are poised to begin renovating our school building this summer. The success of the Build Our Vision campaign, including the recent matching grants by the Sandy River Foundation and two anonymous donors, and the generosity of parents, students, alumni, and other friends of the school has made this possible. When I consider the breadth and depth of support for our school, I am filled with profound gratitude. This September saw the formal dedication of the Garden House (formerly known as the yurt) and Children’s Garden Playground. The Garden House has enabled us to respond to increasing

demand for our early childhood programming by adding additional class sessions for our youngest students. The enticing new playground gives our students room to roam, structures to climb, and corners for creative outdoor play. The most recent brain research studies and reports from teachers in all types of early childhood classrooms, support what the Waldorf movement has known all along. Young children need to play freely, engage actively with the outdoor environment, and interact directly with other children. Capacities for lifelong learning and success are built through these simple, but essential activities. The well-known success of our students in high school each year demonstrates this principle again and again. So, the next time you drop off or visit our school, take a long look at these new additions and the young children enjoying them. This year we also are reaping the benefits of last year’s gala “raise the paddle” funds. New circus equipment, including unicycles, inside climbing ropes and structures, specialty mats, and advanced juggling equipment is enabling Mr. Gardiner to develop our circus arts program. We are also grateful to Marcia, Dave, and Sky Leonard for spending countless hours over the winter break installing our new state of the art LED theatre lighting system, complete with a high tech, and easy to use, light board. The system made its debut for the senior Eurythmy performance, amid resounding “Wow’s” from our delighted

students. We are so grateful to those of you who contributed to the gala funds. As our school grows and enrollment increases, we continue to add and refine our program offerings to provide a deeper, more vibrant, experience for our students. Adjunct teachers Melanie Metzger (American Sign Language), Kristen Arant (African drumming), Russell Kramer and Sven Abow (middle school and high school beginning and intermediate guitar), Tina Dentel (poetry), Iris Alvarez (yoga), and full time teachers Frank Hall (debate), Nevin Bender (Young Men’s Singing Ensemble, Young Women’s Singing Ensemble), and Gloria Leon (veil painting) are just some of the teachers offering these enriching courses and electives. In addition, our growing high school foreign exchange and visiting student programs have generated international interest in our school and yielded a record number of visitors this year. It has been a wonderful year, enhanced by new possibilities and facilities that would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and the fine efforts of our teachers and staff. I thank each of you for your contributions. Because of you, our school will continue to be the center of Waldorf education in Washington, D.C. and its metropolitan area. Thank you.

Giving Back is Giving Forward

W

ith the launch of the Build Our Vision Capital Campaign last year, WWS has seen the largest growth in giving to the school in our history. Moreover, levels of participation in our Annual Fund reached historic highs, and funds raised through the spring gala and fall bazaar exceeded our goals.

Statement of Activities for year ended June 30, 2014

Ordinary Income/Expense Income Tuition 4,265,763 Other Program Revenue 314,012 Other Income 10,489 Donations 221,499 Fundraising Income 65,405 Income from restricted funds 27,388 Total Income 4,904,556

As we mark our 45th anniversary, the extraordinary generosity of the WWS community shows how far the school has come over the years and how much we have to look forward to in the future. All of us at WWS express our deep thanks to all the donors whose gifts have helped sustain us over the years, and expand possibilities for the future. As of mid December 2014, the Build Our Vision Capital Campaign topped $3.8 million in confirmed gifts and pledges from 178 donors. Our goal is to reach $4.4 million in gifts and pledges by the end of the end June 2015 (though donors have until 2017 to make payment).

Expense 7000 · Faculty 2,670,330 Program & Pedagogy 157,903 Program Supplies 99,168 Administration 999,645 Development 127,492 Facilities 667,836 Food/Kitchen 126,246 Total Expense 4,848,620 Net Ordinary Income 55,935

As we close out 2014, we have an exciting development in the capital campaign to report. Inspired by progress in the campaign to date, two anonymous donors have offered a one-for-one challenge grant of $250,000. In other words, every new gift to the campaign will now be matched, dollar for dollar, up to the challenge amount. Successfully meeting the challenge grant will allow us to begin renovations to the school in summer 2015. It seems like a long time coming, but with everyone’s help, we will get there, and we can all look forward to seeing major transformations of the school in the coming year. While the capital campaign is fundamental to securing our long-term future at Sangamore Road, the Annual Fund is fundamental to sustaining our day-to-day operations. Last year, the community gave $221,000 toward the Annual Fund. While this total fell short of our campaign goal of $228,000, the number of gifts was up substantially. Participation levels were up also up, with 100% of parents in 9 out of 12 grades making an annual gift, the highest level of parent participation ever. Equally important, 100% of faculty and trustees contributed to the campaign. The spring 2014 Enchanted Forest Fete spring gala and auctions raised a total of about $120,000. This included two special appeals, one raising $23,800 for new stage lighting and movement/circus equipment, and the other bringing in $38,825 for financial aid. Finally the fall bazaar netted well over our goal of $25,000. Donors to WWS give for many different reasons. For some it’s out of a sense of gratitude for what WWS has given our families. For others it’s a desire to see the school thrive and be stronger for the future. For still others it’s knowing the key role giving plays in keeping the school financially whole. And finally, some give because a letter or call makes them feel like they should. But whatever the reason, we hope that every donor will know that WWS receives their gifts with a sense of profound gratitude and responsibility. Thank you so very much!

Donors 2013-2014 The Washington Waldorf School is deeply grateful for all gifts from our extended community, and we are honored to recognize these gifts to the School. Tuition does not cover the full cost of a Waldorf education. Gifts through the Annual Fund make a vital contribution to closing the gap between revenue and expenses, and keeping WWS financially healthy. In addition, donations to the school, especially through the Spring Gala and auctions, allow us to better serve our students and expand what is possible, now and in the future. This issue of the Messenger also includes gifts to date for the Build Our Vision Capital Campaign. We have checked all donor lists and have made every effort to ensure they are accurate. Please inform us of any errors or omissions by contacting Steve Smith, Director of Advancement and Communications, at ssmith@washingtonwaldorf.org, or at 301-229-6107 x123.
