This unique barn mural is located just a few miles north of Washington, which embodies the pride that our local farm families have in rich tradition and the history they have invested in the community. Gallagher Farms, one of many multigenerational farms that contribute to Washington’s vibrant economy and community, would like to welcome you to Washington.

History of Gallagher Farm The Gallagher Farm was purchased in September, 1891 by my great grandfather, James B. Gallagher who served as Photography by Michael D. a Captain in the Civil War with the Thirtieth Iowa Infantry Regiment. James B. fought in many of the major battles of the Civil War. We have detailed documentation on all of these battles so it was important for us to have our mural depicting a patriotic theme. James B. Gallagher’s grandson, Verle Gallagher (born 1902) and my father were raised on this farm. Verle operated the farm until his retirement in the late 1970’s. In 1981, I moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the farm with my wife, Diane, and started farming with my brother, Richard Gallagher and his wife Janet. Richard and Janet reside east of Washington on my mom’s farm property (all of which are considered Gallagher Farms). We are proud to say that we are the fourth generation of Gallaghers farming this land with our nephew Ryan and his wife Jessica, making it the fifth generation of Iowa farmers.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Iowa, Washington is consistently recognized as one of the best small towns in America. There’s an exciting energy surging through Washington as our history is cherished, neighborhoods are renewed, and modern spaces emerge. Millions of revitalization dollars are invested in Washington annually, creating a progressive & vibrant community that offers opportunities for all ages. In fact, over 38 million dollars have been invested in our region from just one organization, the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, since its inception in 2006. Washington enjoys amenities typically available only to larger cities, including fulfilling careers, a rewarding work/life balance, a strong business community, clean and safe neighborhoods, excellent public and private schools, top-notch health care system and abundant recreation and entertainment choices.

RELOCATION INFORMATION Situated within Central Park, located in the Historic Downtown, Washington’s Centennial Fountain was constructed and dedicated in 1939 for Washington’s Centennial Celebration. It is the only one of its type in the continental US and is unique due to the multicolored light show and various water patterns. It was refurbished in 1995 and again in 2016. If you can, view the magnificent light show at night.

Founded in 1839, Washington is rich in history, as seen through the many wellpreserved historic sites throughout town. Original settlers came to Washington for many reasons: the land was fruitful and quality farms were sold at a low cost, or given away for free. Today, with a population reaching nearly 7,400, the city’s history continues to be seen and appreciated through a number of preserved structures. Make sure to stop by our historic places of interest and take a glimpse into Washington’s vibrant past.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a cinematic treat in a theater with the richest history in America and the world. The State Theatre in Washington, Iowa originally opened as an opera house in 1893 under the name the New Graham. Back in 1897 moving pictures were shown on a cinematographe, that was made in Paris, France. Ticket prices for those early moving picture were 10, 15, and 25 cents each. The theater was used for both movies and live shows up until 1930. Our community celebrates its rich history as the State Theatre was verified as the world’s ‘Oldest Continuously Operating Cinema Theatre’ by Guinness World Records on April 26, 2016. At that date, the theater had been in continuous operation for 118 years, 348 days. Renovated after a small fire in 2010, the theater has been lovingly restored to its beauty of 1946. It offers historic features including balcony seating and a gold waterfall curtain that is lifted before each show. Today the theater offers first run movies on digital projection, 3-D capabilities, and full surround sound. Be our guest! Experience the power of the theater and sit in the same spot patrons did nearly 120 years ago. The Washington State Theatre offers an exquisite experience found nowhere else in the world.

ENJOY A MOVIE IN OLDEST MOVIE THEATER IN THE WORLD!

W. Frank Brinton

Thanks to Frank & Indiana Brinton, the rural community of Washington has had the privilege of experiencing projected entertainment long before many others. Putting Washington on the map, the Brintons introduced early moving pictures to rural Iowa and much of the country from Texas to Minnesota. Frank Brinton began his projected entertainment shows around 1880 with lectures illustrated with magic lantern slides. He added moving pictures to his shows in the middle 1890’s. Mr. Brinton was also working on flyable airships before 1890. He often flew models of his airships in opera houses before his shows.

Back in 1897, one of Brinton’s first exhibitions took place in his hometown, at Washington’s State Theatre, then known as the Graham Opera House. This event has been verified by Guinness World Records, earning the Washington State Theatre the title of the world’s ‘Oldest Continuously Operating Cinema Theatre.’

Story of the Brinton Collection:

Brinton’s collection of films is said to be one of the world’s most significant collections of early film. The short films, magic lantern slides, and hand-colored films, have been newly restored following a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa Libraries and the Library of Congress. If you’re lucky, you can hear the vibrant story of the Brinton family from local historian Michael Zahs. He often recreates Brinton shows using original magic lantern slides and films with accompaniment from Red Cedar Chamber Music. Soon a model of a Brinton airship will be added to the program. Frank and Indiana opened the world to the people of the Midwest from their home base in Washington, Iowa. Photo courtesy of Saving Brinton documentary/Barn Owl Pictures www.brintonfilm.com

Taking pride in the community develops from a committed local government that is consistently investing in initiatives and infrastructure. The city of Washington is proud of its progressive attitude and array of high quality public services and resources available to its residents. Operating under a Mayor-Council form of government, the city is overseen by a mayor, and a sixmember city council. Through a score of initiatives, Washington continuously sustains its earliest town motto, “The Cleanest City in Iowa.”

Building a Stronger Community:

The Chamber acts as your advocate on issues involving local, state and federal government through hosting Legislative Briefings and Candidate Forums and by building relationships with elected officials and area businesses.

Also housed in the recently renovated courthouse are the offices of the County Auditor, Treasurer, Recorder, Attorney and Clerk of Court. The Historic McCreedy Building, located adjacent to the courthouse, contains the offices of the County Engineer and Assessor.

Washington is home to a thriving arts culture whether that is theatre, dance, music, traditional arts, or the healing arts.

Washington boasts multiple performance venues, including the addition of the $7.4 million Washington Performing Arts & Events Center, which opened in 2016.

Washington is proud to feature multiple performing arts centers, unique galleries full of regional artists’ work, several dance and tumbling schools, and arts centers teaching various arts courses. Live music is also a large part of our culture from over 85 years of Municipal Band performances in the summer to various venues showcasing everything from live country, rock, jazz, blues, and caribbean acts. Washington believes that the art can enhance and transform a community for the better.

“Washington has many cultural opportunities that are usually found in communities with much greater population. I think it’s because so many people in Washington are willing to commit to the projects they believe in and see them through to fruition,” says Isabella Santoro, manager of Dodici’s Shop. Santoro grew up in Italy and lived in New York City before settling in Washington, her mother’s hometown.

Various outlets provide workshops and demonstrations to nurture budding artists within the community. 28

Washington and Washington County have a prosperous mix of manufacturing and agriculture that is a core part of the area’s economy. Agriculture in Washington County is unique in many ways. The farming community is young, educated and innovative. Washington County is a national leader in hog production, corn, soybean, and beef production. The region also offers one of the largest concentrations of organic farms in the Midwest. Connecting entrepreneurs and businesses with mentors and local opportunities strengthens the economic vitality of Washington County. The Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG) is a non-profit, publicprivate partnership that helps to create a positive environment for business and industry around Washington County and Southeast Iowa. WEDG partners with a wide variety of resources and organizations to help meet the needs of the business community. Main Street Washington is another economic partner serving the community of Washington. Building the idea of a downtown’s total image, their strategy is incremental, resulting in many small changes that create a strong impact over time. Since Washington became a Main Street community in 2008, they have developed the economy of the community by revitalizing our downtown district. Focusing on the betterment of both the business sector and the community at-large, the Washington Chamber of Commerce supports the economic initiatives of the community by acting as the community information hub, providing business referrals, maintaining a community calendar, promoting local shopping and encourages the city of Washington in all facets on a daily basis.

The city of Washington is home to a rich religious tradition. Approximately twenty houses of worship represent a wide variety of traditions, providing a great number of spiritual services. Along with regular and special worship services, local churches serve the needs of the community through youth groups, free community meals, educational events, spiritual support groups, outreach and advocacy. In addition to faith-based services, over 100 service clubs and social organizations have been established here. Organizations further local philanthropic actions to such measures as college scholarships, the issuing of clothing, books, bicycles and more for underprivileged children and families as well as the contribution of beautiful flowers and trees in order to beautify the Washington community. www.washph.com | 319-653-7758 44
