Date nights have taken Zen and I to all pockets of Sydney. Depending on our moods and cravings, we'll go anywhere from having a cosy night with noodles and dumplings at Ashfield, to driving all the way to Penrith for a game of aqua golf and some piping hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Of course, there are also many other times when a fancy dinner and a movie would suffice.

Cafe Sicilia is perched along Crown Street near Red Lantern, but the rustic old school Italian decor which spills onto the footpath, and the heavily accented waiters will have you thinking you're in Italy. I almost broke into a giggle when our waiter started reading out tonight's specials. They couldn't have set up a more authentic experience!

We're offered housemade bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar on arrival. These go hand in hand with the complimentary marinated olives at each table. The bread is soft and fluffy, and while I'm tempted to eat my entire share of them (there's two each), I'm reminded I should save my stomach for the dishes to come.

Still starving at this stage, we decide to do the full Sicilian feasting thing with antipasto, pasta, mains and dessert. The selection of mixed Italian salumi and cheeses ($33) is simply irresistible. The meats selection consists of prosciutto San Daniele, spicy salami coppa, bresaola, mortadella, rolled pancetta and

the cheeses include provolone, gorgonzola dolce, taleggio cheese, grana padano, camembert cheese and pecorino. It's an extremely generous serving size of two to share but we polish most of it off!

Yum cha at Kam Fook, Bondi Junction For my first course, I try the homemade gnocchi ($25) cooked with fresh Balmain bug meat, cherry tomatoes and balanced with a hint of chilli and garlic. The waiter convinces us that the traditional Sicilian seafood cous cous ($27) is a must-try so Zen orders this for his main course. The couscous is poached in a light fish stock and is dressed with a superb showcase of mussels, vongole, calamari, prawns and market daily fresh fish fillets!

Meanwhile, the duck maryland ($28) turns out to be not one, but two duck marylands. I'm a bit intimidated by the size of the dish, having only just eaten the entire plate of gnocchi. But the scent of the blood orange glaze and the savoury goodness of the roast duck wins me over. The accompanying eggplant and spinach millefoglie is a cute and delicious touch.

As ambitious diners, we also order a side dish of roasted potatoes ($12)! They're roasted with pancetta, caramelised onion and parsley and are incredibly scrumptious! However, no matter how many pieces we eat, it still looked like we barely made a dent into it!

For dessert, I couldn't go past the cannolo siciliana ($6), filled with ricotta and finished off decoratively with chopped pistachios, powered sugar, cinnamon and studded with some candied fruits. There is nothing more Sicilian than cannoli and this one is damn good!

Last but not least, we share the granita tasting plate ($10). Small decorative cups of almond, pineapple, pistachio, strawberry granita are served on a plate with four tasting spoons. The granita is almost as smooth as sorbet and the flavours are so refreshingly elegant and vibrant! My favourite flavours are the almond and the strawberry.

For Zen and I, this date night was like a quickie holiday to Italy and back, and we had two very satisfied stomachs as souveniers!

Sicilian Secret Spritz by jayne Leave a Comment Tweet

1

What would your mother think if you told her that after a series of anonymous text messages inviting you to a family style dinner with the Godfather you just decided to follow instructions and proceed to a secret address? The invitation declared “There’s one rule, leave the gun take the cannoli.” Crikey I thought, will this be a memorable Sex and the City style Sydney moment or more like Blighty’s Blind Date? Fortunately I’d already heard good things about one of Sydney’s most innovative young guerilla dining outfits (headed up by the savvy @msdarlinghurst) and I was suitably delighted to arrive to the warm welcome of a traditional Sicilian Spritz (a refreshing cocktail combining orange bitters, prosecco and soda water) and relaxed easy table talk conversation right from the get go. Sante! Overrun by Greeks, Germans, the Spanish and then the French during its turbulent history(before being united with the rest of Italy in 1860), Sicily is in fact the largest island in the mediterranean, renowned for its almonds, citrus fruits, olives and its interesting rustic wine styles (Sicily actually produces more wine than New Zealand, Austria and Hungary combined but until recently was only known for its fortified wines). However Sicily is probably most famous for being the birth place of the Mafia as recounted in that multi-oscar award winning 1970!s classic movie “The Godfather” and hence the need for an authentic local venue to host our secret foodie feast….

Caffe Sicilia delivered in spades – there were rather swish looking gold masks dotted around the nicely laid out communal tables and plenty of suited and booted real Italians gliding happily around the place. I’m glad to report that I didn’t spot any guns or gangsters at this popular one year old Surry Hills restaurant, located at the Paris end of hot Sydney eat street – The Crown St precinct as I like to call it.

Our delightful hosts for the evening Alex and Donna from Secret Foodies danced skilfully between tables and courses ensuring group conversation bubbled along effortlessly, whilst the Caffe Sicilia kitchen team presented an enjoyable 5 course menu showcasing fresh produce and small dishes from their homeland. My favourite dish of the night was the seared fanned 30 day aged sirloin steak with a burnt rosemary and green peppercorn oil, served with Lyonnaise potatoes – I loved the cute presentation of this meat and potato plate with a twist and the ingredients were melt in your mouth and nicely flavoured. As an added bonus I also got to meet a host of lovely fellow expats on the night and enjoyed sparkling conversation and simple food in pleasant company. What a great way to go out to dinner on your own. On my way home it felt like I’d just been at an extended family dinner – and most importantly that I would be happy to do it all over again soon.

Dinner with the Godfather [ 18 ] May 2, 2012 | Lola Li

Last week, we made our foodies an offer they couldn’t refuse – ‘Dinner with the Godfather‘. The setting at Caffe Sicilia was eerily reminiscent of Louis’ Restaurant in the scene where Michael Corleone takes out Sollozzo and McKlucksy. Fortunately for us, on this occasion everybody made it out alive. Mafia references aside, we enjoyed a complete feast, indulging in five courses of authentic Sicilian delicacies.

An uncanny resemblance...

An Aperol spritzer was presented on arrival, a refreshing apretif to tickle the tastebuds and prepare us for what was to come. Lovely and aromatic herbed bread awaited us at the tables, accompanied by a fragrant olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The feast began, and first course kicked off with a pumpkin and Sicilian pecorino flan served with honey and walnuts. The crust-less tart was presented next to a subtle sweet pumpkin puree, which went perfectly with the combination of honey and walnuts.

Pumpkin and Sicilian pecorino flan served with honey and walnuts Next to arrive was my personal favourite, the San Daniele wrapped prawns on a bed of confit garlic and balsamic reduction. Big juicy prawns tasted sweet inside the salty prosciutto, complemented by the smooth and subtle confit garlic. The balsamic reduction added a touch of piquancy, rounding out the flavours in the dish.

San Daniele wrapped prawns on a bed of confit garlic and balsamic reduction Lobster ravioli dressed in a light thyme and seafood bisque and cherry tomatoes followed its crustacean cousins. Chewy parcels filled with generous chunks of lobster were served with a sweet tomato puree and light bisque.

Lobster ravioli dressed in a light thyme and seafood bisque and cherry tomatoes The final savoury course delivered a seared fanned 30 day aged sirloin steak with a burnt rosemary and green peppercorn oil served with Lyonnaise potatoes. The dry aged steak was cooked rare, seared lightly on the outside to seal in juices, the centre of each slice was pink and soft. The rosemary and peppercorn oil added subtle fragrant accents to the flavour of the beef.

Seared fanned 30 day aged sirloin steak with a burnt rosemary and green peppercorn oil served with Lyonnaise potatoes After a bit of seat shuffling to help to mix up our rather large group, we settled down with dessert - Sicilian chocolate cheesecake with a sweet orange glaze. The light cake sandwiched a layer of cream and nuts and was topped with a healthy coating of chocolate. The orange glaze added a citrus zing to the chocolate and cream flavours. It was a little dry though and lacked the spunk and flavour Sicilia’s pastries usually offer. A glass of Frangelico and lime was the perfect digestif, the fragrant hazelnut aroma of the liqueur with the tartness of fresh lime ended our meals on a divine note.

Sicilian chocolate cheesecake with a sweet orange glaze Caffe Sicilia is an authentic Sicilian restaurant with quality food and friendly (to say the least!) service. Ladies, watch out for those cheeky Italian waiters and the naughty desserts in the deli counter. But enough about what I think, let’s hear what our foodies had to say‌

Love the concept of secret foodies but think they missed the mark, cafe sicilia isn’t too secret and didn’t think the dinner matched the price tag .

Caffe Sicilia supports OzHarvest all through May May 19 2012 by Rebecca Varidel in Eating + drinking | 0 Comments

Caffe Sicilia is delighted to announce its first ever collaboration with OzHarvest. They are offering an exclusive ʻOzHarvest Menuʼ in the month of May to help feed those in need. $30 from each $60 menu sold will be going straight to the charity – which is the equivalent of providing 30 meals to one Australian in need. OzHarvest founder and Australiaʼs Local Hero 2012 Ronni Kahn will host a special closing gala dinner on Wednesday, 30th of May. The dinner will see the announcement of the funds raised together with Caffe Sicilia from the month of May, and other future charitable initiatives. This interactive event will also encourage guests to get their hands dirty with Caffe Siciliaʼs chefs teaching them how to roll pasta and pipe their own pastries. The pasta and pastries made by guests on the closing gala dinner will then be picked up by an OzHarvest van the next day to help feed those in need. Limited tickets are available for this event. Only available in May for dinner, this ʻOzHarvest Menuʼ is a three-course Sicilian inspired menu. Dishes include homemade egg pasta filled with prawns and cuttlefish with Chardonnay wine reduction to start, succulent pork belly in Sicilian spices and herb infusion as a main, and finishing off with Sicilian pistachio tart with mascarpone mousse. Vegetarians are not ignored with a special menu also available upon request. OzHarvestʼs very own wine label ʻHarvestʼ will also be on offer in May to go with the menu.

Your essential guide to the best places to eat, drink and play in Sydney

Ms Darlinghurst's Newsletter Wednesday 16th May A ‘quick drink' at Button Bar last night with a friend turned into an impromptu bar crawl to El Loco then Low 302. I can proudly say I was hangover free this morning, unlike some of my friends. So, what’s the trick? Drinking 4-5 nights a week for work can have its toll so I try and stick to some basic rules. Drink 1 small glass of water in between every cocktail. If you order a cocktail in a tall glass with ice you don't need to finish all of it. The last 10% is most likely just watered down alcohol. Eat some food, even if it is pistachio nuts and walk between bars rather than cab. The fresh air is good for you. So now I've taught you my little tricks you'll be set to take on two new bars I've featured in this weeks newsletter. You can also get involved with Secret Foodies 'Christmas In July', Tonight in Bondi + lots more. Till next week…

xx Ms Darlinghurst PS- Don’t forget to throw a vote my way for the Bachelorette of the Year competition. If I win, i’ll be sending you weekly tips from NYC! Wouldn’t that be

Please come with me to Cheese night………. Prince Posted on May 15, 2012 by My Kitchen Stories

I have seen some reviews of the Prince concert on other blogs, but I haven’t had enough of Prince yet. This concert just left me wanting more and more and more and luckily Prince did give more and more with his 7 encores. I have loved Prince forever and he has lost nothing of his sexy funkadelia for me……… The place went wild and we danced and danced and sang and he asked us what we were doing tomorrow…… if we would like to stay the night……….!….until he finally left us in the dark…waiting for more. More stolen pictures a minute……………. Also pictures to follow of the Official Vth Cheese night in Surry Hills involving more cheese than a group of humans should possibly eat…. and the winner of Rabbit Hole Tea give away! In the meantime this is my official thank you and shout out to Cafe Sicilia…………….

OzHarvest Closing Gala Dinner at Caffe Sicilia

Caffe Sicilia will be rounding out their month-long spree of delicious OzHarvest collaboration with a fabulous Gala Event. Hosted by OzHarvest founder Ronni Kahn, guests won’t just dine, they’ll be schooled by the chefs in the finer points of rolling pasta and piping pastry – did someone order dinner with a side of expertise? The OzHarvest charity provides 333,000 meals a month to those in need and prevents excess food ending up in landfill – Ronni Kahn was recently awarded Veuve Clicquot Initiative for Economic Development Award in recognition of her achievements. For the month of May, Caffe Sicilia is offering a special Sicilian inspired OzHarvest menu comprising three delicious courses – start with homemade egg pasta filled with prawns and cuttlefish with a Chardonnay reduction, indulge in main course of succulent pork belly in Sicilian spices and herb infusion, then cap off your evening with a Sicilian pistachio tart with mascarpone mousse (options available for vegetarians). While you relish the flavours, you can also feel great knowing that half of the $60 price tag will be used to provide the equivalent of 30 meals for those less fortunate. Attendees at the closing gala have a chance to get up close and personal with the talented chefs at Caffe Sicilia – the pasta and pastries you create under their tutelage will be distributed by OzHarvest the next day. Who knew charity could be so delicious? Wednesday, May 30th Caffe Sicilia, 628 Crown Street, Surry Hills t (02) 9699 8787 w www.caffesicilia.com.au w http://www.ozharvest.org Like this? Want more?
