WHAT MAKES WARTBURG

worth it

You're starting college soon. Maybe you've toured campus or talked with an admissions counselor, but, chances are, you still have a few questions. That's OK. We have a few answers.

TAKE A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY.

EMBRACE YOUR PASSIONS.

Spend a May Term or summer at Wartburg West in Denver, Colorado. Volunteer for a service trip to an inner city or a rural area struck by natural disaster. Study abroad. Join a club or two. Or three, if it fits you.

Our professors are not only experts in their fields, they have other enriching interests: brewing beer, organic farming, and foster parenting, to name a few. They live what they love and want to help students lead similarly rich lives.

UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL.

REALIZE YOUR PURPOSE.

This transformation starts with a tight-knit community that helps each person develop self-worth. Wartburg faculty and staff are ready to mentor you. They get to know you and cheer you on. With their support, you discover your potential and find the opportunities to unlock it.

Serve your community as a doctor. Serve as an innovator in your field. Serve the world as an advocate for those without hope. Wherever you are headed, Wartburg will be with you to help you realize your purpose.

ABBY SINGLETON '18 HOMETOWN: Indianola, Iowa MAJOR: Elementary Education MINORS: Leadership, Organizational/Public Relations

"My first-year experience was more than I ever imagined it could be. I had the opportunity to be a part of Student Senate, the KWAR radio station, Dance Marathon, Homecoming Committee, and multiple choirs, and that’s just the beginning. Wartburg is so worth it to me because I could study, get involved, and build relationships with my professors and new friends." 3

student tips 4

FIRST-YEAR

PACK SMART.

You’re about to share a room. Stick to the essentials and share the big things, like the mini-fridge and TV. You’ll also want zip ties and duct tape, and maybe a mini tool kit. They’ll come in handy, trust us.

M AKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR ROOMMATE. OH, AND EVERYONE ELSE. Get to know each other before moving in. It’s easier to start college with a friend at your side. When you do get to campus, say hi to everyone. It might seem corny, but you will be seeing them a lot during the next four years.

LEAVE YOUR DOOR OPEN. Everyone is looking to make friends the first year, so make sure they know they can stop in to say hi. Just don’t forget to close it when you leave.

TAKE A NAP. Sleep is crucial to your health and your performance in class, but don’t sleep through your 8 a.m. to make up for a late night. Sometimes a nap in the afternoon can keep you alert and well-rested (as long as it's not during class).

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Let’s be real here. There is a lot of homework in college. Think of studying like laundry—it’s easier to do in smaller, more frequent loads.

ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT. There are tons of people on campus ready to help you out, whether it involves class, figuring out your major, or just finding your way around the Science Center.

TAKE A BREAK. College can be stressful, and there are a lot of pressures with school, work, and finding time to socialize. Take time to de-stress with a fun activity, hang out with a friend, or just do nothing for a little while.

EXPLORE. This is the year to try any and every club or organization that catches your interest. But don’t forget to explore campus, too. Try every door and hallway just to see where it might go. You never know what you might find. 4

WARTBURG STUDENTS

lead by example

SETH NUTTING '15 Seth, from Milo, Iowa, played basketball for Wartburg, but found his passion calling games for the college’s radio station and producing and directing video segments for Knight Vision.

LIZ SHULL '16 Liz, from Sac City, Iowa, co-founded the college’s Water to Thrive chapter. In one year, the group has raised enough money to fund two wells in rural Africa.

NATASHA WILLEY '15 Natasha, from Albert Lea, Minn., a human rights activist, found her voice for LGBTQ issues by joining Alliance, and she volunteers for the V-Day Campaign to end violence against women and girls.

5

MAX CHINNAH '15 GABRIELLE LARSON '17 Gabrielle, a first-generation college student from Waterloo, Iowa, also will be the first social work student to participate in The Washington Center’s fall internship program.

Max, from Nigeria, claimed a $10,000 Davis Projects for Peace grant and $3,000 prize from the Igniting Innovation Summit to construct the solar-powered cookers he designed for families in Ghana.

NICHOLE LYONS '16 Nichole, from Waukon, Iowa, shepherded Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry into the digital age by live streaming chapel services and blogging. Her skills earned her a gig operating the main camera at the Gentlemen of the Road Waverly Stopover this summer.

JESSA BIDWELL '16 Jessa, from Grinnell, Iowa, got a taste of real-world research through the University of Iowa FUTURE in Biomedicine program. The experience provided invaluable networking opportunities and career guidance.

MWALIMU KARISA '18 Eighteen months after he raised enough money to build a well in his Kenyan village, Mwalimu completed his efforts to build a medical center.

BE PART OF THE

1

tradition 2

1. KNIGHTING CEREMONY All first-year students are "knighted" by the president and other leaders of the college during orientation weekend.

2. OUTFLY TRADITION Outfly, or in German “Ausflug," is a student-initiated day off from class that happens once a year during Fall Term. The day is often themed and filled with activities. Outfly is called on a date known only to the college president and the student body president.

3. ROOTS IN GERMANY Wartburg takes its name from the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany. The castle is a significant landmark in history. During the 16th century Reformation, Martin Luther—disguised as a knight—sought refuge in the castle and translated the Bible into the language of the people for the first time in history. The college's castle heritage can be seen in its architecture and is evident in many names around campus including Mensa (German for university cafeteria) and Konditorei (German for coffee shop), and music groups like Ritterchor (Knights Choir).

5 4. SERVICE TRIPS Wartburg has a long tradition of service to others. Hundreds of students give up one of their breaks to provide service to communities all over the country. Wartburg has one of the highest percentages of students participating in service trips in the U.S.

5. MASCOT AND COLORS Sir Victor, the school mascot, cheers the Knights to victory (See what we did there?) on the field, in the classroom, and on stage.

You're

worth it

You may have heard it a thousand times, but that’s because it’s true: your college education is an investment in your future. We know the price tag might scare you at first, but you need to look at the whole picture. Financial aid—a combination of scholarships, grants, loans, work-study, and other funding sources—drastically reduces that sticker price. The most important thing to remember is your Wartburg experience is WORTH IT.

2015-2016 COSTS Tuition $36,210 Fees $980 Room (approx.) $4,325 Board (approx.) $4,685 Total (Sticker Price) $46,200 What is the difference between sticker price and net price? Sticker price is the total yearly cost of a college education, but net price is what you actually pay after scholarships and grants are factored in. Private colleges typically start with a higher sticker price but are also more generous with financial aid dollars than lower-priced public colleges. Some students pay less than the average net price, and some pay more, but all Wartburg students receive an incredible, high-quality education at a workable cost.

TOTAL $90,260

That's $18,673 in REAL VALUE! Why compare five years at state schools to four years at Wartburg? The reality for many students is it will take four-and-a-half to five years or more to earn a degree at a state school, according to national statistics. At Wartburg, 93 percent of our graduates complete their degree in four years. NOTE: The state totals are based on the average net price of Iowa's three state universities, as provided on the College Score Card website (both our numbers and theirs do not include loans). The lost income is based on the average starting career salaries of Wartburg graduates, which is approximately $35,000. That extra year of earned income makes a big difference!
