President's REPORT Wow, what a year! It has been a huge, busy, challenging, learning but, most importantly, a rewarding year for Wanda and all its members. As always, keeping our beach and its surrounds protected and safe for the public, our visitors and our club members is our main priority. Once again, our patrols came through. Several new patrol captains took control of our beach and did an amazing job. All our captains, vice captains and patrolling members should be enormously proud of their efforts. We also started a new patrol ‘The Nipper Parent Patrol’. This was championed by our Club Captain, Ken Smith. This was a resounding success and will now be a regular patrol. I noticed a general improvement in the standard of all our patrols as the year went on. Let’s continue to build on this. It is our core activity. This is what we do! Let’s continue to grow in size and raise our objectives. Please consider gaining extra awards to spread the loads within the patrols. You might surprise yourself! The patrols were expertly supported by our IRB section led by Trevor Taylor, which is full of hard working, enthusiastic members. I honestly believe if every section of our club were as keen as the IRB section noone would come near us. The year was difficult in many areas due to the changing of so many directors at one time. Some people thought that this was a negative aspect. Personally, I believe it is healthy to have so many people wanting to become directors and to have a greater say within the club. Probably the biggest void left was when we lost two Education Directors Brett Furniss and Brenton Veale in quick succession. This left an enormous hole in our structure.

Educating our members, new and old, is a pivotal requirement of any surf club. Luckily for Wanda, our Club Captain, Ken Smith, and Lifesaving Director, John De Cean, stepped up. Not only did they do their own, already, big roles, but they also covered the education area as well. The efforts of both these guys throughout the entire season was fantastic, thank you!! They organised several courses including Bronze, SRC, IRB, ARTC and spinal. Many other Wanda members were involved, in particular, Jo Handforth, Karen Ross, Sam Axiotis, Brett Atkinson, David Phillpot, Solly and Spider. A huge thanks also to Elouera Surf Club, in particular, Peter Carney, North Cronulla‘s Jason Gollan, District Supervisor, Steve Urquhart as well as Branch Education Manager, Marissa Saunders for their support and tutorage. They were nothing short of outstanding. As stated, we had no Chief Training Officer but due to the efforts of all the above, somehow we won the Sydney Branch Award for most awards in 2015-2016. This is an absolutely amazing effort by these people. Congratulations! I would like to thank Sutherland Shire Council, in particular Brad Whittaker and his staff of lifeguards for their support and their professionalism. Working together certainly makes our job easier.

well structured, organised and communicated. All sections were encouraged to train together in the gym, on the beach and in the water. The planning was meticulous. Thanks to Jock Campbell for his huge input, in particular, at the start of the season. It really planted the seed of training hard and training together. Another success this year was having a Surf Sports Executive, which consisted of Tait Brannock, Greg Pierce, Charlie Brown (Deputy President and Team Manager) and Dean McMahon. These guys planned our whole year including coaching, training schedules, logistics of the carnivals, equipment sale and upkeep etc. etc. and did an amazing job. They were ably supported by our Surf Sports Committee, thanks to all! Whilst I applaud all our champions at Branch, State and National level, all competitors whether they be JAG, Youth, Seniors or Masters, all should be congratulated for their efforts. All areas wore our colours with pride. We had record numbers competing, and in all areas. I have been amazed over all the sections, at the level of commitment to training and competing together as a club.

In competition, it was a spectacular season through the efforts of many people, in particular, the Surf Sports Director, Tait Brannock and Head Coach, Greg Pierce. Many new and innovative ideas were put in place. The training was extremely

Congratulations to everyone involved on a successful season, it was a real team effort to achieve the following: ■■

Winning the Steve Warren Cup at the North Cronulla carnival

■■

Hosting and winning the Interclub

■■

2nd at Senior Branch

■■

3rd at Senior State

■■

2nd at Nipper State

■■

5th at Masters State

■■

11th at NSW Pool Rescue championships

■■

Hosting and winning the Wanda Tradies/TJM carnival point score

■■

11th at Aussies

I am extremely excited for our future in competition and all aspects of the club. We have many new young members coming through the ranks of the JAG who are expertly coached and directed by the JAG committee. Charlie Brown was again amazing as our Team Manager and was supported by too many to mention, but, suffice it to say, that this was a real team achievement. Charlie and Donna also coordinated the Touring Team shirts and hats kindly sponsored by Tradies. I received

6

many compliments at Aussies about how we stood out as a team. The club as a whole can take a bow. One aspect I am extremely proud of this year was the amount of people who stepped up when asked to do something. Again, in competition, all committee positions were filled. The coaching standard again rose, with older members joining in and passing on their wealth of knowledge. There are too many individual coaches and trainers to name but ALL sections were outstanding, board and ski, boats, beach, swim, March Past, R and R, pool rescue and surfing. We also started competing in the First Aid competition. We are keen to expand in the areas of first aid, lifesaving, pool rescue, board riding and possibly even IRB racing. The more we do, the more members we will keep interested and retain. This year we moved our annual carnival from January to April. This was a resounding success with over 28 clubs, 650 competitors entered. This was the biggest carnival in Sydney Branch in years. Whilst this opportunity was a one off due to the gap between the State and Aussie carnivals, our carnival committee of Greg Pierce, Greg Allum, Tait Brannock and Rod Holdsworth

took the punt. It was a marvellous success – thank you all. Thanks to the Sponsors of our carnival - Tradies and TJM Southside. Congratulations to Mini Allum and Danielle McMahon for being appointed as the Interbranch team captains. Also to our team captain, Hayden Allum for qualifying for the Nutri-Grain series. Due to increased numbers, the Surf Sports committee decided that the sections needed to raise money for the Aussies Sunday night dinner. It was great to see members of all ages volunteering to fundraise. It was like what we did years ago. Everyone chipped in and they raised the money required. Let’s keep going with this. It’s not only good financially but it’s great to all work together. Thanks to John Douglas (JD) for his countless hours doing the entries, it is a major job and he does it so well. Another highlight for me, alongside our captain Ken Smith, was being able to attend the Branch and State carnivals of our nippers. Under the guidance of Ian Blackhall and his outstanding committee, our JAG were, again, magnificent in competition. Congratulations also,

in the way the entire season is planned and structured. Every single week it is a mammoth achievement, organising, teaching, instructing and even feeding our lifesavers of the future. The retention rate from nippers to seniors is always a major priority and we are ‘hell bent’ on trying to improve this. With the opening of our new Founders Room and Stage II of our clubhouse, the whole dynamics of Wanda has changed. We now have a significant debt. Our numbers of paid and part time staff positions have increased. Our running costs have increased significantly due to the extra areas, extra staff, upkeep, cleaning, design, furniture, licencing costs, food requirements, insurances etc. As well as this, our competition section has expanded by up to 25%. Obviously this requires extra equipment, boards, skis, reels, boat equipment, entries etc. All costs have increased. The numbers of our membership is up and our patrolling members are up. Obviously this is a great thing in that our club is growing. Yet the available monies basically remain the same, due to the set up costs of the Founders Room and, of course, the repayments of our loan. With all these extra complexities within our club, I wish to thank our finance Director, Trevor Elliott. Remember, Trevor is already a Life Member, a past President and a 50 year member. His input is not seen by the majority of members but he does an amazing amount of hours to ensure our club functions financially. Thank you, Trevor. Also, thanks Trevor and Anne Caterson who lead the Finance and Sponsorship Committee subcommittee. This is a very important sub-committee that meets monthly however for the committee to make informed recommendations to the Board of Directors it must have input from all sections of the club. Let’s prioritise this for next year. Thank you also to Gay Curtis, our sponsorship manager, who handles all our sponsors’ needs. This is a massive requirement of our club. We cannot survive without the sponsors, thank you Gay.

Thank you to all our many Wanda sponsors. We are extremely fortunate to have so many sponsors who contribute to our club. Many have been long-time supporters. Wanda would not be able to operate as affectively as we do, if we didn’t have their valuable support.

management committee. I also wish to thank our Patron Solly, many of our Life Members, and many of you, the general members who make us a great club. Many of you offer help, advice and support, this is where we get our ideas. I am always happy to listen, thanks.

I would request that all members reading this refer to our sponsors’ acknowledgement page on pages 88 and 89 within this report.

The C.V. Forshaw Trophy is our most prestigious award. It is for our “Most Consistent Member”. This is voted by secret ballot each month by the Board of Directors. This was hotly contested with over 20 prominent members nominated throughout the year. This year’s winner is Ken Smith, our Club Captain. Ken was also the Club Registrar, a massive job on its own. Then to top it off, as already mentioned in my report he along with John De Cean organised numerous courses, acted as our Education Director and received the award for most courses received in Sydney Branch. Outstanding effort Kenny. Congratulations!!

These organisations support us, so please support them whenever you can!! A massive thank you goes to Nathan and Katie Spinner a great team, who together kept the club administration moving ahead. Again this is a huge and important role in our club. The Administration requirements of all organisations continually grow. Surf clubs are no different. The communication throughout the club has also really improved, a very important aspect of the club. Thanks to them both. Thanks also to our office staff Alex Johnson and Marg Royall, and our Founders Room manager Cara Woods and assistant Mark Lampret. As always our friendly bar staff, the majority of who are club members, do a wonderful job all year round. Paul Auglys, our Facilities Director, came onto the Board just as Stage II of the clubhouse was finishing. This was perfect timing for such a professional, adapt, committed and enthusiastic person. His efforts have been simply amazing. His set up of the Founders Room and the structures he has put in place will continue in the years ahead. Congratulations to our Member Services Director, Mick Brannock (Spider). In my opinion there is no-one who depicts what Wanda is all about more than Spider. This was even recognised elsewhere this year as he received the prestigious Cronulla Senior Citizen of the Year Award. Once again thanks to all our Directors, members of sub committees and all people who helped out this year. It was great to see the vast majority of positions filled throughout all levels of the

Thank you to our Ladies Auxiliary Committee. They had a busy year with numerous functions to organise. It was never a problem. Each function was handled beautifully. I was surprised at how much fun (and wine after) they all had doing it! They also financed the 100% Patrol Attendance Awards, a major award at our presentation night. Thank you all. The PAYCE Sutherland to Surf is again being run in July. This is our major fundraiser. Thank you to our many sponsors and the organising committee again headed by Mick Brannock, Anne Caterson and Trevor Elliott. Anne was supposed to step down last year but lucky for us, she is still there, expertly helping Wanda, not only for the S2S but in the Finance area. Thanks Anne. Thanks also to the new members of the Sutherland to Surf Committee, namely Sam Axiotis, Gerard Gill, Tony Holland, Mark Howden, Brett Taper and Dick Winston. It just goes to show many hands make light work. Your efforts are really appreciated. The Sutherland to Surf is obviously pivotal for our success. Please put your hand up and help!!!

Patron's Message I wish to congratulate all our members who are satisfied that they have carried out their duties in our club. I know it is very hard to expect everyone to put in 100% as some have other activities such as study, other sports and family etc., however this is our duties as lifesavers. We have to give 100%.

I consider this was one of our best seasons and I refer you to other sections of this report which clearly shows what a great year we had. The surf itself was not the best and it caused the beach to be closed on many occasions. Regardless of this, it is expected that patrols must remain on duty. Our competitors also had a great season as can be seen in the results and rankings in the major carnivals, both in our Juniors, as well as the Masters and Open divisions.

All of these comments and all the fantastic results listed in our annual report just does not magically happen. It takes lots of hard work and it would be remiss of me if I did not say that I feel that the administrators of the club are some of the best group that I have witnessed in my years in the club and I wish to thank them for their efforts. This coupled with the harmony that has been built within the club is something that is envied by other clubs in the district and I ask all members to help keep this going for the future seasons.

Director of Administration Report NAT

HAN

I would first like acknowledge the leadership and contribution of Wanda’s past President Anita Pryke and past board members.

For the 2015/16 season the club took the decision to change and with this a new President, Mark Sargeant, and many new board members took responsibility for leading the club. Change brings with it challenges. From day one the board commenced forming as a unified entity. I enjoyed the start-up phase of our season and over the year I gained a lot of insight into the workings of the club from an administration perspective. I had a number of objectives in mind for the season when I took on the role.

1. Financial With the debt taken on by Wanda to complete the Stage 2 developments I made it a priority to cap Administration costs until such time as the financial outlook of Wanda was understood. This has taken some months and recently we have firm financial budgets understood and agreed by all of the board that will see Wanda move into a new era of “whole of club” office administration resourcing

2. Communication Elevating communication within the club to improve member awareness. This item started immediately after taking office and the driving force behind this was our talented Communications Officer Alex Johnson. Alex compiled and published our weekly mailchimp “Wanda What’s Happening” and our biweekly newsletter “Beyond the Beach”. Thanks must also go to Katie for feeding information and Carol and Gay for proof reading and providing content. With a view to providing a consistent club correspondence platform @

wandaslsc.com.au accounts were made available for all directors and club functions.

3. Satisfying base compliance requirements Insurance, SLSA /NSW/Sydney Branch and public officer. Insurances in a large club are expensive. With a new facility and significant debt a priority was to ensure prudent insurance cover was in place. Wanda’s Total Assets grew from 2014 to 2015 by almost $1,400,000. Surf Lifesaving clubs have become complex systems that cross over many and varied areas – Lifesaving Operations, Training and Education, Commercial ventures (funding), Sponsorship (funding), Surf Sports, Membership and Registrations, Junior Activities and Social activities. Surf lifesaving has continued to evolve over the past 100 years and, in my view, has a desire to become more than a volunteer organisation that protects the public on the beach. Sustainability of surf club operations, funding models and a balance between purposeful not for profit volunteer membership and commercial enterprise with paid resource’s over the next period of evolution is a key challenge facing Surf lifesaving clubs. Wanda is not an exception. From the “Tin shed” in the Wanda sand dunes to current year 2016 Wanda can boast a $4.5million asset and a 900+ membership base – what are the expectation of Wanda members for the next 10, 20, 30 years? Many people contributed to the Administration operation of the club but without question the main contributor this year has been Katie Spinner – Deputy Administration

SPIN

NER

Director. I sincerely thank Katie for the consistency of work done over the past season and the club can see evidence of this work through a reduction in Administration Clerical costs by nearly $20,000 on past years. In the office we maintained a limited presence with Margaret Ryall and I would like to thank Marg for setting up the office space, for setting up the stores and for loading the stocking system (Bepos) with Cara and Trevor and for being the general “go to person” on site. Marg made a significant contribution with limited time and cost to the club. Alex mentioned above with communication was also the main data entry person for Surf guard – the database that Surf Lifesaving impose on clubs to record patrolling hours. Alex also arranged patrol food, assisted with communication efforts in all areas of the club and assisted with club functions over the year including; a surfboat launch, club opening event, Annual report, AGM. We leave the past season with many improvements and I am confident the next board will continue on from a solid foundation – built over 70 years of membership effort, friendships and volunteer contribution. I hope that you enjoy reading this year’s Annual Report. I believe it is an exemplary chronical of the past season and I would like to thank (again) Katie and Alex for their effort in compiling this club document.

Director of Finance Report The following is the Finance Director’s Report relating to the consolidated Finances of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club, the Junior Activities Group and the Ladies Auxiliary for the 2015-2016 Season. The Club achieved a surplus of $82,284 with to rents returning to full payment for the Year. The Founders’ Room starting from scratch, made a profit of $109,786 after set up costs. Our major fundraiser, the Sutherland to Surf was down in the number of entries resulting in a loss of income of $71,301. This seriously affected the monies available for lifesaving activities. Despite this, the event is still our major fundraiser and all thanks must go to Mick Brannock, Anne Catersonk, Sue Brannock and their army of workers that make this an icon event for the Shire. The ANZ Loan, secured by Corporate Guarantee & Indemnity by Sutherland Shire Council has been

reduced by $94,508 to $1,133,324 in accordance with the agreed repayment schedule.

On the Lifesaving support operations our tenants are secure and all lease options have been exercised.

During this year the Board of Management took a range of steps to improve budgeting in line with Directors portfolios and to tighten and control expenditure.

Gay Curtis is also still engaged to manage our sponsors and be a point of contact and communication with them. These steps recognise we are a business and our volunteers need support to run the Club.

The Founders’ Room is operating to fully comply with Liquor Licencing and RSA regulations. Founders’ Room staff are working to award conditions including PAYE tax, Superannuation and Workers’ Compensation coverage. The goal now is to continue to develop the Founders’ Room to further contribute to the objects of the club.

Thank you to our Auditor, Frank Larosa, for the Audit and his advice and to the Board and members for your support during the year.

Trevor Elliott Director of Finance

Club Captain's Report This season was successful in the core business of lifesaving with twelve patrols covered by 197 Active members, 24 Cadets and 4 Long service members as well as the 30 new SRC members from the U14 nippers. Thank you to all patrolling members for their valuable time volunteering to keep the community safe at our beach. Audits by the District Lifesaving Area Supervisor and assistant found several breaches particularly during the early part of the season. Breaches were in areas of key personnel missing from patrols particularly IRB crew. This substandard area was partially addressed by Sam Axiotis who trained 3 IRB drivers and 5 IRB crew before the season was over. While on the IRB section, I am amazed at the work ethic and culture in this group, lead tirelessly by Trevor Taylor who has set the IRB shed up incredibly after the building works were completed, this is an essential section and needs support from all the membership. Total senior membership was up 20% to 578 with 57 new members and 28 transfers joining the club as well as many former members re-joining after varying length absences. This year “Nipper Parent Patrol 12” initiated by our hard working Director of Lifesaving John DeCean was a great success. The patrol had lots of willing parents setting a fine example to their children and providing the foundations for future generations of patrolling members. There were some great patrol results this season as we welcomed two new patrol captains Yvonne Holland and Izaak Smith who both did outstanding jobs. There were 17 members who achieved 100% patrol attendance and 11 members who accumulated in excess of 75 patrol hours including two members Anna Hayes (128.5) and Matthew Peterie (100.75) who both cracked the century. During the season a Skills Matrix was developed on each patrol which made evident the strengths and weaknesses of each patrol with regard to awards held, non proficient awards and senior patrol members

who only held bronze medallions. Some of these members have been patrolling for many years and have not continued their training for advanced awards. I appeal to all patrolling members to seek training in the advanced awards to make each of our patrols rich in the depth of lifesaving skills available. Some of the key roles in which we are deficient are Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management, IRB driver, IRB crew, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and First Aid. There needs to be a change in culture amongst some of our membership who believe that lifesaving patrols are only there to allow them to compete at the major carnivals.

obligations particularly amongst the competitors in the club, to clear things up – If you are allocated on a patrol TURN UP. If you can’t make it GET A SUBSTITUTE. If you can’t get a sub do a MAKE UP PATROL straight away. if you follow these simple rules there will be NO PROBLEMS with patrol hours for carnival entr ies! Congratulations to all competitors both in the JAG and seniors who competed with success at carnivals of all levels culminating with great results at both State and Australian titles.

Patrolling is the interface between the community and our club and we need to move forward in presenting a more professional image via full uniform, fully equipped patrol area, clear communications and vigilance.

A big thank you to the Board of Directors for their support during my first year in the position and to Elizabeth Sargeant who helped me with her knowledge of Wanda slsc operations during the season.

2015 OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW CLUBHOUSE In early December 2015, we officially opened our new clubhouse. The purpose of the opening was not only to officially open our beautiful new Founders Room and Stage II of the clubhouse re-development, but to acknowledge the great work of both the Stage I and Stage II building committees.

Both the committees were responsible for the development of our clubhouse which stands today. Without the works of Stage I we would not have had Stage II, due to their foresight and hard work. This gave us the income to finance Stage II. The members of the committees were:

members. A number of politicians and dignitaries attended the evening. The honour of cutting the ribbon and officially opening our clubhouse was rightly carried out by our Patron, Ernest (Solly) Stephens, OAM. We now have one of the best clubhouses in the State, if not Australia. Let’s all work together to pay off the debt. Our future is assured if we all work together for the benefit of Wanda.

DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING Report

JOH

ND

Then 2015/16 season has certainly been a busy one for the lifesaving side of the club, I can report NO LIVES LOST during the season, which is what we as a club are happy to report and thank you to all our patrolling members.

This season we have seen many changes with the introduction of a nipper parent patrol which operated on certain Sunday mornings, and was under the guidance of our Club Captain, Ken Smith, who was also the patrol captain of this patrol and I must say, this assisted in bringing the club together as one club and one captain which is fantastic.

their fellow club members especially on Christmas morning when I needed help due to a rostering error I had made. 30 members offered to help out which was a great effort and we also had some families come along and help. This is what we are all about -helping out when we can. After all, it is our club and we are very proud of the history of the club .

This season we have gone through a rebuilding process. Look at the areas that we lack in, in regards to awards required for our patrols and we have been working to ensure that we can meet our patrol obligations for future years. This was a big job especially as we had no Director of Education, but that did not stop us as a club as we had the highest number of awards in the district and also were up two awards on the previous season and a big thank you to all assisted as well as members from other clubs.

I need to pass on my thanks to our District Lifesaving Supervisor Michael Byrne for your understanding and support during the season, with our patrols as well as the District Education Supervisor Steve Urquhart for all your help in our education and exams of our members .

I would like to record my thanks to all our Patrol Captains for a great season and for your support and guidance to all the members of your patrols and making sure we could meet our obligations to the Council and Surf Lifesaving. A special thanks to our IRB Captain, Trevor Taylor, and all our IRB drivers who assisted during the season and helping out with other patrols as well as water safety for our competitors during competition. This is an area that we will be focusing on next season to ensure that we have more drivers and crew for the club. During the year the call went out that we needed help on some patrols and events and it was great to see the response from most members of the club who came down to help out

As we head into the new season we will see a few changes made in the Lifesaving at the club. We are looking to expand the number of patrols that we put on the beach. We will also see all patrols having 2 vice captains as well as ARTC, spinal, IRB driver and IRB crewman on all patrols. We will also see all patrols strengthened by moving people around in patrols, and the distribution of a patrol booklet to all active members before the start of the season which will explain what our obligations are as patrolling members of the club. This season we have 3 members being awarded the National Service Medal which was introduced in 2007 and recognizes members who have given 15 years continual patrol service to the club with over 40 hours per year. This year they were awarded to Graham Hill, Aaron Scheibel and Jon Dimitriou (who celebrates 16 years 100%).

EC

EAN

We have 17 members who were awarded their 100% patrol attendance, which is a fantastic effort by these members who attended all their rostered patrols this season, with no subs. I would like to challenge more members to get this next season. We would like to see at least 50 members next year. This season Michael Bonnici. Patrol Captain of Patrol 3, attended the Country Exchange programme which was held in the Far North Coast Branch and after discussions with Michael it was a great weekend and I encourage more members to consider attending this next season as is a great learning opportunity for more of our members. At this years Branch Awards of Excellence, Jake McDonald Patrol Captain of patrol 2, was the winner of the Under 21 Lifesaver of the Year and a big congratulations to Jake and also thank you for your assistance as Deputy Director of Lifesaving. Finally I would like to thank our Club Captain Ken Smith for all his support and efforts this season. Not only was he Club Captain but also assisted and guided the training of our members in their awards. He was patrol Captain for Patrol 12 but also Registrar of the club. To all our members who did patrols this season a big thank you for your commitment to the club and the community and making sure our beaches are protected when we are on patrols. Enjoy your break and see you on the beach again soon.

Director of Facilities Report It has now been just over 12 months since the stage 2 building works were completed and I am pleased to report, despite a tornado and 2 once in 100 year storms the facilities are running well.

The board and ski, boat and IRB sheds have been extended, fitted out and are now full of equipment. A new store room has been built, the IGA training and education room completed, the ice bath is up and running, swingulator (2 person rowing machine) operational and Club memorabilia, including the Australian Champion photos, hung in the Founders Room and other areas of the club. Over the coming months our focus will be on finalising the fitout of the downstairs area which will include new honour boards, photographs and other fixtures to get the most out of this space. I would like to thank Peter Brady, Mick Brannock, Rod Holdsworth, Brett Furniss, Ken Smith, Scott Benson, Les Townsend, Nathan

Spinner, Geoff Considine, Dave McGrath, David Chapman, Greg Pierce, Fiona Auglys and everyone else who lent a hand over the past 12 months to get the entire facility up and running. In our first year of operation the performance of the Founders Room has exceeded expectations. Requests to hire the room for weddings and other major events have poured in with bookings now being taken well into 2018. During the year we installed a state of the art audio visual system, implemented a new point of sales system and made other minor changes to the bar to improve functionality and service while also making a profit.

Paul Auglys Director of Facilities

Anita Pryke and Georga Sargeant were invited to Government House to meet Prince Charles as part of his 5 day visit to Australia.

Prince Charles and Camilla were here to mark the 100th year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign amongst other things. Anita Pryke and Georga Sargeant did the Trek to Gallipoli in

20

January 2015 as part of the Mateship Trek run by our local Federal Member for Cook, the Honourable Scott Morrison, MP. Anita and Georga, along with the other members of the Bate Bay Clubs who were involved in the Mateship Trek to Gallipoli, were invited to Government House for a ‘meet and greet’ with Prince Charles.

I would like to thank Cara Woods (Functions Manager), Mark Lampret (Bar Manager) and all of our staff for their hard work over the past 12 months. The way Cara and the team transform the Founders Room every weekend to facilitate the premium events we are now attracting is amazing. The service and atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon is also fantastic and I encourage you all to come down when you get a chance. In the coming year our focus will be on refining our strategy and services to drive profitability while at the same time meeting the needs of all Club members now and into the future.

education Report The season was disrupted by the resignation of two Directors of Education shortly after the AGM. These two setbacks did not deter the remaining trainers who completed the training for the majority of awards listed below. Many thanks to Joanne Handforth, Karen Ross, Sam Axiotis and Dave Phillpot who were instrumental in the Education of our patrolling and water safety members. Our trainers were assisted by club members John DeCean, Mick Brannock, Ernest Stephens, Graeme Waugh, Jared Adams-Lau, Matt Peterie, Brett Atkinson and Graeme Wright with their water based activities. My largest thankyou goes to the District Education team who jumped

in to help with the training of both basic and advanced awards, District Education Manager Stephen Urquhart, Warren Smith, Peter Carney, Jason Gollan and the Branch Education Manager Marissa Saunders. Thanks also to all the District Assessors who made the assessment days enjoyable despite large numbers of willing candidates. Despite the problems we faced we produced a greater than 100% increase over the bronze medallions produced in either of the two proceeding seasons and topped

the Bate bay clubs for total awards issued.

Surf Lifesaving New South Wales City to Country Exchange On the 23rd of January I was fortunate enough to embark on a fantastic opportunity as Surf lifesaver that would ultimately change the way I operate at the beach.

The exchange program to the Far north coast of New South Wales began at Sydney airport where we met our group members, 3 from the Central Coast (Umina, Wamberal and Ocean Beach), 3 from the northern beaches (Manly, Palm and Whale beach) and the 3 from the Sydney branch (Elouera, North Cronulla and myself). Our flight arrived on the Gold coast whereby we travelled to Lennox head where we would stay. After settling in on Saturday we went off to patrol. I, along with 6 others patrolled Ballina-Lismore SLSC for the afternoon. Although the beach was closed it was a great experience getting to know the local lifesavers, understanding the local conditions, getting a tour of their new clubhouse and sharing stories of our lifesaving experiences and operations from our various Sydney clubs. Saturday nights “team bonding activity” was bowling.

22

Sunday, would present the opportunity to patrol Evans HeadCasino SLSC and Byron Bay SLSC. A big swell was present a both beaches however that did not stop us. The morning patrol at Evans Head was quite the learning experience as a 10ft swell battered the beach. Being such a small club of 30 active patrol members, we learnt about the difficulties of getting members to come down and patrol the beach. We learnt about the local conditions which included a break wall with a powerful bar on the other side, something I as a member of Wanda never had to consider when patrolling the beach. I found the opportunity to test my IRB skills in big surf by taking the boat out. This was one of the many highlights of my day. In the afternoon we patrolled the famous Byron Bay which had very different conditions to Evans.

The large shore break and powerful sweep at Byron presented a tough challenge for the lifesavers to keep the large crowds inside the flags. On Monday morning we ventured to the Lifesaver 4 Helicopter base in Lismore. This was an amazing experience getting the inside tour of how the helicopter operates, speaking to the various crewman, pilot, doctor and paramedic, looking at previous missions and learning about their area of operation. As a surf lifesaver and a member of the public, we always see the Westpac chopper in the air, so it was amazing to finally learn more about a piece of equipment that saves so many lives every day. Monday concluded with some “team bonding activities” of high ropes and archery followed by a swim to cool off at Lennox head. Tuesday (Australia day), concluded with a bang. We woke up early to go to Evans Head to patrol and help out with the Australia day festivities of the small town. We served as water safety for the local triathlon. Personally, this was a great experience as I tested

my skills on the board. Paddling out through the break, past the break wall into the river for the swim and then paddling back out the river against the current of the powerful bar back to the beach. Shortly after, we made the trip to Ballina whereby we got to learn about and ride the Jet Boat. There are very few SLS Jet boats in Australia let alone NSW so to ride one was one of the most amazing experiences of my SLS career. Overall, this trip included some of the most amazing experiences that will better myself as a lifesaver and a person. By putting myself out of my comfort zone I learnt so much about other clubs local conditions and operating procedures. I feel like I have a lot to bring back to Wanda, and ways that we can improve. I would like to personally thank Wanda for enabling me to go on this exchange, the Sydney Branch for picking me and Surf Lifesaving New South Wales for organising this trip.

JAG Chairperson's Report IAN

The 2015/16 season at Wanda Nippers has been a memorable one for many reasons & as usual the kids & the army of volunteers have been truly inspiring, giving me confidence that this outstanding club’s future is in very good hands.

This season – Mother Nature tested us, with multiple beach closures including just one Sunday of water activities in 2016. Through the hard work of the committee & the imagination of our Age Managers, we endured & the kid’s smiles never waned.

3. BUILD ON OUR STRONG COMPETITION FOUNDATIONS:

■■

1. LIFE SAVING AND SURF EDUCATION: We continue to refocus on lifesaving education this year & I sincerely thank Ken Smith, Jo Handforth, Karen Ross & David Phillpot for their passion & commitment. ■■

■■

■■

■■

In total 30 nippers - 90% our u14s (and a few u13s) gained their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and started regular patrols with Wanda. Also we had dozens of nipper parents complete their Bronze Medallion which is excellent & we thank you all.

Zane Holmes Wave Warriors & Matt Poole Iron Man Clinic. We insist that Wanda kids deserve the best & these two experiences were terrific examples.

■■

Nipper Holiday Camp. A very big thankyou to Karen Ross for organizing a terrific holiday experience for the kids. Where would you rather be during your summer holidays than at the beach & in the surf!

2. SURF CONFIDENCE PROGRAMMES This is a critical part of the experience here at Wanda, & our plans to advance this section were thwarted by the conditions this season but not the dedication of a few passionate people. I thank Nat Buckley & her band of helpers – especially Sarah Brown, Emily Eaves, Jed Buckley, & Abby Adams.

Parent Army. No egos – just a hard working & dedicated team who I cannot speak highly enough of. A big thank you to my committee – who lead the way in volunteer sports administration & are regularly lauded for their professionalism & high standards.

■■

Financial Security. Our fundraising, BBQ, & sponsorship revenues led us to be able to deliver 100% of the plan for the kids. Special thanks to Gary McNamara for his outstanding efforts here.

■■

Sponsors. Thanks to our major sponsors Ansto, Boost Mobile, AJ Grant, Purnell Motors, & the many secondary sponsors who support our kids in lifesaving.

R & R. Thanks to JD, we had another team of girls compete at state this year & they improved out of sight.

■■

Sporting Results Were Outstanding. Across every carnival this season Wanda Nippers excelled. The highlight once again - 2nd in NSW, & medals in the Blue Ribbon events. Gold Medal in the All Age Board Relay & Bronze in the All Age Sprint Relay. WOW. A special mention to Mia Ross Club Captain – who has become the greatest State Titles point’s winner in the history of Wanda Nippers. Well done Mia.

ALL

■■

Jock Athletic & Tyrone Courtney’s beach program. Arguably the most qualified beach coaches in Australia, our program continues to grow.

CKH

4. KEY ENABLERS:

Led by Head Coach Ian ‘Rossi’ Ross - there are too many highlights from our surf sports team to mention them all. Here’s a few:

Against the tenets of our 3 year plan – here’s a quick summary.

BLA

BEST OF LUCK U14’S The Age Managers & Parents should be proud of this group. The girls are undoubtedly the most successful competitive group in Wanda’s history, & the boy’s age group not only grew in numbers as the years went on, they also grew into fine young men. We are all proud of you & wish you all the best as you follow your dreams & protect our beaches. I know of no other environment where kids have fun, whilst learning important life skills & make lifelong friends as Nippers. I’m proud to have been associated with it, & privileged to have been your Nipper Chairperson. Thank you.

JAG Water Safety report 2015 and 16 was another fun and action filled season at Wanda Nippers; when we were able to get in the water that is. This season must have set a record for the number of beach closed days and each Sunday we always had surf.

WATERSAFETY - U15 HELP

All our nippers especially the under 9s and 10s took to the water with plenty of confidence and determination which I always think is pretty impressive. You also show plenty of skill in the water with swim and board and especially the body surfing. Well done kids you continue to amaze!

and board and their skill and confidence grow ■■

There were a number of highlights from a water safety perspective this year that reflects on the club as a whole and especially the training section at Wanda that saw a good number of Bronze and SRC award holders coming through. My highlights in no particular order: ■■

24

The focus on the water hesitancy section and the participation of the U15 cadets – hopefully we see you guys back next year with this year’s U14’s joining you. It provided the main water area with much needed added resources and enabled us to open the second water area for those developing their skills. It also provided a greater number of water safety with the younger age groups which sees more kids complete the Sunday swim

It was great to see a new group of bronze parents coming through this season. At Wanda our kids enjoy a large array of training, competition and special activities on top of the regular Sundays. To be able to provide these we must have water safety organised to support the coaches and to provide safe water areas. It is critical that we continue to replenish and build on our numbers – we can never have enough water safety proficient members (note to all parents wanting to get involved this is a great starting point!)

■■

It was great to replace some of the old rescue gear this season especially with another batch of the soft rescue boards

■■

The parent patrols – great to see our bronze training in use for other than nippers and never short on numbers

■■

This year our water safety group had a number of training sessions with Sydney Branch’s water safety officer on how to conduct

inshore rescues. As a group what we learned was a very important skill that adds to our capability in providing a safe environment. Just about all of our water safety participated – well done guys Finally I’d to thank all the water safety crew – tube swimmers, board paddlers and IRB crews and drivers, from the old hands, to the new bronzes and the under 15’s and SRCs, the Sunday patrols, the training officers and our club captain. You all have contributed so much to another successful Wanda Nipper season.

JAG Team Managers Report The season kicks off with a huge agenda and before we know it everything is wrapping up and we are planning the next season.

Reflecting back we achieved so much and it passed by in a flash. We saw many familiar faces, as well as new eager faces, attempting their proficiency swims at South Cronulla. It was encouraging to see so many make it through, as well as those determined to keep practising to get through next time. We had more than 400 nippers register. We gained a new group of U6s and introduced our Captains for the season Mia and Nathan, Corey and Keira. Each Sunday takes a lot of organising by our Committee, Age Managers and parent helpers. This includes; beach set up, IRBs, setting cans, Water Safety, activity planning, protecting our nippers, newsletters, preparing age group folders, announcements, selling uniforms, collecting money, mentoring our nippers, BBQ, recording attendance, Life Saving sessions, taking photos, website updates and this is all just on our run of the mill kinda days! Thank you to all of you that make this happen it all contributes to the experience for our nippers. Thank you importantly too to our Sponsors. We continued our successful ‘Water Confidence’ program this season. I was able to introduce several nervous and emotional nippers to this area; only to watch in awe as our team of dedicated helpers swum alongside them, floated with them and even coached them basic board techniques. It is so rewarding to see the sense of achievement on these nippers faces. Thank you - Nat, Melissa, Cherie and the U15s who helped them each week. Thank you also to Jo, Pottie and Karen for the education programs they run for our SRCs and Bronzes. Thank you too to JD and Yvonne for all your

efforts in coaching our R & R and March Past teams. We achieved a lot of great results at carnivals this year including Forster, Catho, Cronulla, Cook Classic, Four Ways, Sydney Water, Nipper Nats Manly, North Cronulla Ironman, Ohana, South Maroubra, Branch and State. Thank you Julie-Anne for ensuring all our entries were in, as well as the Officials and Water Safety for enabling these carnivals to run. The 6’s and 7’s also competed at the annual Wanda Cup Carnival, while some of our U14’s took up the invitation to compete in the Senior Carnivals. Congratulations to those selected as Sydney Branch Representatives; Keira in the SLSNSW Junior Development Program as well as everyone selected in the Sydney Interbranch team that competed at Cape Hawke. We also received a lot of interest in the Branch Development Camps for the U11s and U13s. There was loads of great feedback from the minders and nippers, about the weekend at Deer Park, confirming what a great opportunity it is to attend. Other activities throughout the season included; State and Australian Pool Rescue, the State Board Riding, the motivational talk by Josh Wood, hosting Wave Warriors, Karen’s Summer Camp and the trivia night which is always a great night to socialise as well as raise funds. Wanda sent a team of 160 competitors to Umina for the State carnival with their performances resulting in an overall 2nd place in the point score. Everyone was awesome in doing the best they possibly could in every event

they went in, and displaying the Wanda values of Respect, Good Sportsmanship and Humility. We won medals and points across all 3 days starting with Gold in the flags on Friday and ending with Gold in the All Age Board on Sunday. We also all know ‘Wanda can run’ after securing a place on the dais in the All Age Beach Relay on the Saturday. We are so lucky to be so competitive in so many age groups. It really is exhilarating (resulting in breathlessness!) running from one event to the next to watch them all! Thank you to all the Coaches for all their efforts every week to get us there. We end the season with the U14s still to compete at the Aussies Youth Championships as well as transitioning to the Senior Club. Good luck and please feel free to come back every Sunday to help out the nippers. I also need to mention a very special thank you to Ian for all he has done and all that the nippers have accomplished during his Chairmanship. This is the season in a nutshell with a lot of tears, joy, achievements and disappointment mixed in. No wonder it felt like a whirlwind. I am so proud of all our nippers and what they achieve week in and week out. It is so inspiring whether it is winning a race, improving their personal bests, participating in a team or facing their own fears. That’s why I enjoy my role.

JAG Club Captain reports Being chosen for club captain this season was not only an amazing honour but so much fun. I really enjoyed helping and watching all the nippers as they progressed through the season. I am very proud to have been chosen by such good friends and leaders of the club. Firstly I would like to congratulate everyone who attended nippers and had fun. I remember starting nipper’s way back in the u8s and I have loved every minute of it. I have made so many close friends through nippers and we have had the best 7 years together. I would like to thank our age managers Josh, Paul, Justin and Ross. Josh I don’t know how you did it but you managed to keep all of us girls under control for such a long period of time. (Oh that’s right - You had Paul!!) We appreciate it so much and we will miss seeing your face every Sunday. Paul thanks for being the best assistant (ASS) manager ever, you helped us with everything and we will miss you so much. This year at state we managed to come 2nd overall, for the second year in a row. What a fantastic state it was. Our achievements would not have been possible without some very important people. I want to say a huge thankyou to all of the coaches over the years. Dean, Charlie, Potty, Greg, Rossi and Kenny from all the way back in the u8s. I would like to especially thank Dean McMahon. You have been there since day one for all of us and have worked so hard to improve our skills. You have helped me personally to be the competitor that I am and I know many of my fellow competitors feel the same way. We couldn’t have asked for a better person to be on our nipper’s journey with. Also to my dad, I would not be here without you and you have helped me and the girls so much, to believe in ourselves. Thanks Rossi.

30

Coming away with a first in the all age board relay was the best way to finish off my nippers journey, but also one of the best experiences of my nipper career. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to be there watching this whole experience. I certainly couldn’t have done it without my talented teammates Kai, Fletcher, Ben, Jake and Finn and also to my amazing dad Ian Ross. What a team!! To make history by being the first team from Wanda to win the all age board relay is something special. The u14s trip away was the best way to top off our nippers journey. Celebrating together as a group of friends was so much fun and I wish we could go back. We had the best time in Queensland visiting wet & wild, timezone, greenmount beach, pizza hut and not to mention the shopping. This trip wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the fundraising and the help of all the parents. But a special thank you has to go to Julianne Warn and Helen Ryan for making the whole thing happen. The most important people throughout my nipper’s journey have been the u14 girls. All you girls have made my time at nippers so fun and exciting and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to spend every Sunday with. I have made so many strong friendships with all

of you and I’m going to miss you guys so much not seeing you every Sunday but I hope to see all your happy faces at seniors. Also to the u14 boys thanks for making nippers so funny and interesting. We bonded so much as a group especially at our trip to Queensland. Finally, I would like to thank Wanda surf club for giving me the opportunity to compete and have fun with all my friends. What a great club to be a part of. I want to encourage all the young nippers to keep having fun and continue on this amazing journey all the way up until the U14s. See you on the beach.

Mia Ross

What a great experience and privilege it has been to be chosen as this year’s club Captain for Wanda. Another great year for Wanda 2nd overall again at State Championships, the opening of the new Wanda Clubhouse, which I was fortunate to be a part of in the cutting of the ribbon and which has provided a great location to congregate at the completion of nippers each week. I would like to congratulate all the nippers on this year performance, again the weather conditions were testing but in true Wanda spirit we just got on with it. I would like to thank all those involved in making nippers happen each week. Firstly a big thank you to the water safety who spend hours in the water making sure all our nippers our safe. They help those who are tentative complete the swim and board each week, and allows us to train each week and compete at all the carnivals. Secondly a huge thankyou to our coaches Ian Ross and Dean McMahon who unfortunately had to retire from coaching earlier in the year. Your

CLUB CAPTAINS

time, dedication and commitment is greatly appreciated by all and is shown in the results achieved by Wanda at all the carnivals throughout the year. A special thank you goes to our Age Manager Justin and Assistant Age Manager Ross, they have endured a lot with the boys and finally in the last couple of years we have been able to attain some medal for all their effort. It may have taken a while but we finally go there. All the boys have formed many friendships that we will value and I’m sure will continue throughout our lives. The under 14s trip away was a great way to finish all our nippers years.

I have loved my time at nippers from the U6s through to the 14s but our journey doesn’t end here, we now move onto the next phase into the senior club where we will go on learning and taking on new challenges like the Ski. Good luck to all the new up and coming nippers, I hope you enjoy your time at Wanda as much as I have. Wanda is a great club with enormous spirit and talent. I look forward to seeing you all on the beach when I’m patrolling and watching all the nippers go up through the age groups and joining us in the senior club.

JAG Head Coach report Well another season has gone but what an enjoyable one it was.

Through testing times at both training & Sunday nippers with the testing surf conditions, we all managed to get as much decent training in as we could. Considering all this Wanda nippers managed again to take out an incredible 2nd place at state with one of the most exciting finishes with the All age board relay that you will

ever see! On top of this a 3rd in the all age sprint relay just to prove how amazing our depth is as a Club. With numerous excellent individual results Wanda really showed the rest how strong we really are. Once again our Coaches & water safety turn up week in, week out & do an outstanding job. Without you all we can’t achieve what we do so

a huge thankyou from me, you all make my job so much easier. Congratulations to all & see you next season, I loved every minute of this season. See you on the beach,

Ian Ross

JAG Surf Life Saving Coordinator report This has been a very successful season where we have been able to build on the foundations of last year in providing a specialised surf educational program for our junior members.

This year we have been able to push further in consistently providing surf education to multiple age groups. Our focus has been teaching junior development within Surf Lifesaving relevant to their specific age group ranging in a variety of topics from personal safety and wellbeing, Basic First Aid, CPR, signals to body systems and Rescue techniques. Thank you to Brooke Thatcher our Weekly Activities Co-ordinator who ensured Education was on the agenda every Sunday morning for at least one of our age groups. I would like to also thank Dave Phillpot (Potty), Karen Ross and all age managers where together we have been able to deliver positive development outcomes through experiential learning for all of our young nipper lifesavers. The kids

have been keen to participate and it was rewarding to see them burst with enthusiasm in sharing their knowledge and learning amongst their peers and their parents as the season progressed. Our young lifesavers who represented Wanda at the U11 and U13 Development Camp did Wanda proud. They were able to demonstrate their knowledge and represented our club to the highest of standards in their behaviour and participation. Many of our JAG members are now able to use their knowledge and skills learnt this season well beyond the limits of Sunday Nippers. Congratulations to our 30 plus U14’s Nippers, one of the largest groups for some years who successfully completed their Surf Rescue

Certificate (SRC). Since completion, all of this group have been involved in participating in one of Wanda’s 12 Patrols keeping our beaches safe throughout the summer. Our Wanda JAG parents have done a tremendous job supporting and encouraging their children with surf education. Some of these parents through weekly involvement have been inspired to complete their Bronze Medallion this season and we look forward to seeing them continue to support our kids learning in the water and on the beach in their orange rashies. We look forward to continue growing surf education knowledge for all Nippers next season.

JAG IRB Coordinator Report Another season has come and gone and what a season 2015-2016 was! Flat and windless one day to large and choppy seas the next and even on those unpleasant days none of the IRB drivers and crew people wanted to sit it out. I would like to thank all of you guys for giving up your own time and kindly doing IRB water safety, laying cans on Champo’s and maintaining all our gear.

JAG Age Managers Reports

U6 GIRLS

What a fantastic, energetic and polite little bunch of ladies we landed Girls with in the U/6’s this year! Having been handed the mighty yellow cap with a “no pressure” reminder by Ian and Josh Eason that the former custodians of the yellow cap (U/14 girls) broke so many records Nutri-Grain are naming a new line of cereal after them, our girls were un-phased and quickly set about breaking their own records such as Most toilet breaks in a 90min period, most sand in eyes, highest number of participants in a Tug-ofWar battle not actually touching the rope....and so many more.

U6

On a more serious note, this is a really lovely group of girls who support and encourage each other and it was great to watch little friendships form and confidence levels grow each and every week. Our girls were always keen and willing to learn so and in amongst all the fun we had some very good beach safety sessions with patrol captains who were generous with their time and answered lots of questions. We have some awesome little beach runners in our group and I can see them representing Wanda really well in the years to come. Hitting the water whenever conditions allowed was definitely a highlight for the girls. We did shallow wades and runs through hoops, and simple bucket relay games became even more fun when invariably returning buckets of water landed on

20

15-

20

16

U6 BOYS

the next runner’s head instead of in the bucket! The “Sharks and Fishes” tag game was requested every week and if judged by volume of screams, could quite possibly be the most popular beach game in the world today! The girls loved their first crack at board paddling down at Gunnamatta, it was awesome to see how confident they all were and we’ll definitely be doing more of this next year. So many people contributed to making this a great Nippers season, but special thanks to Kristy who stuck her hand up to be Asst. Age Manager and really helped organise things both on and off the beach. Thanks to all the parents and siblings who stepped in and helped on the beach or BBQ, or grabbed gear without being asked - it made things a lot easier and was much appreciated by Kristy and I. I can’t wait for next season and hope all of our little champions return to do it all again.

Matt At the start of the 2015 / 2016, when we were appointed the Age Boys Managers for the Under 6 Boys we were charged with the care and guidance of approximately 40 rowdy, energetic, lads and I’m glad to report not much has changed. At the start I personally didn’t know what to expect and

U6

I wondered if we as a collective group would make it through one session let alone a whole season and future seasons. What we found was the boys with all their energy and enthusiasm were a great bunch of people who are always keen to try something new. Also the parents of our group are always willing to help and make the Sunday mornings work well and are also fantastic group of people. It is easy to see why the children are great people when the parents are being great of the role models and providing a good environment for the children. This is what makes it a pleasure to come to nippers every Sunday morning and be the age manager. Throughout my many years serving on the beach for Wanda, it has become very apparent to me that the strength and long term viability of a surf lifesaving club is largely dependent on the quality of the juniors and the “nursery” that allows them to develop; the JAG. I am glad to inform you that from this perspective I believe the future for our beloved Wanda SLSC is very bright and I have no doubt that our children possess all the key attributes that make a surf club great. This is a key point which I would also like to emphasise. It’s not all the buildings, bars, boards and equipment that make a surf club great; it’s the people who are involved. This is why it is vitally important that we strive to retain our junior members throughout the years of development and tailor the programs to suit their individual needs.

35

U7 GIRLS

The reality of junior development is that not all the children are going to be great swimmers, board paddlers or runners; and for my mind this should not be seen as a negative point to exclude individuals. Rather, it should be recognised that every individual has something special and unique to offer the surf lifesaving movement which allows for a rich mix in the culture of the surf club. This is a view shared throughout Wanda which is why I enjoy being involved with the club. With this view in mind, if there is something that is concerning you or if you have some ideas on how things can be improved, please feel free to come and speak to us the age managers or the members of the nipper board so that we can further develop and improve the experience for our children. I have found with my personal involvement with Wanda that ultimately, you “get back” what you “put in” when it comes to the club. This is why continued parent involvement is key to our success. To this end, I would like to encourage all of you to please come back to Wanda next season and stay involved with the club. I look forward to seeing you all back on the beach for many years to come. Finally, to close; thank you all for your assistance, it is and has been very much appreciated!

Ben The U7 Purple Caps are an incredible group of Girls girls and they all had an amazing year. New friendships were formed each Sunday in the sand at Wanda Beach. Many girls deepened their friendships from last season. Our group has grown from year to year. Some girls had so much fun last year they brought their friends along this season.

U7

36

U7 BOYS

They all made great progress in their water confidence and will be ready for the wade next season with many girls diving under waves during their favourite water activity – the wash off.

We are also looking forward to seeing what creative activities Brock has for the girls and parents!!

Our girls are all aspiring Life Savers. They had many opportunities to learn how to read the surf at Wanda and identify rips. They are familiar with rescue tubes and are gaining confidence in using them. The girls learnt about IRBs from the IRB team with some showing interest in gaining their IRB license in the years to come! They are all very comfortable in the Patrol Area and had lots of fun learning from the Life Savers. Some even found their mums and dads in the patrol tent!

Brock, Mel, Mel, Scott, Colin and Christie.

We had many proud winners of our special trophy the Golden Goggles. The Golden Goggles were awarded to girls who displayed extra enthusiasm or talent on the sand or in the water. A large proportion of girls also received their 100% and 200% attendance awards at our presentation day. Well done to these Nippers and their parents who show a great commitment in coming to Nippers consistently throughout the season. U7 Purple Caps have an amazing support base in our actively engaged parent group (which often includes grandparents). We know our parents also had a wonderful year. Many began the Bronze Medallion Course and will be ready for the water next season! Each Sunday our parents spend long sessions in the water or crawling through the sand or hopping along the beach with hoops. So a huge thank you to our energetic and enthusiastic parents! The Age Managers had lots of fun this year too. We are really looking forward to next season when our girls get the chance to expand their knowledge and skills of the beach.

See you all then.

It was great to see so many of the U6 boys from Boys last season return this season. As they continue on their journey of becoming junior lifeguards their confidence, and competitive, levels have continued to increase. Importantly their friendships have also continued to grow too.

U7

The weeks were filled with games and lessons including surf safety, patrols, flags, sprints and wades. Special days like Gunnamatta were enjoyed by all and gave everyone the opportunity to pass their proficiency. The Wanda Cup was another highlight full of fun and races. It certainly bought out the sportsmen in the purple caps; with all of them trying their best to win a place. Thank you to the Age Managers for organising the boys each week. We all appreciate your time and efforts. We look forward to seeing all of the boys back in the 2016/17 season, hopefully the weather will be kinder to us and don’t forget boys you will be able to start dolphin diving in your wades!!

Jenny and Glenn The ‘red caps’ have had another great season this year in what can Girls only be described as challenging conditions with beach closures and terrible weather in the latter part of the season. We welcomed back a lot of

U8

U8 GIRLS

the girls from last season and quite a few new nippers joined the U8 girls this year. The girls started off a little timidly, but over the season we saw their surf and beach skills develop. The girls who were nervous to wade through the waves at the start of the season, were dolphin diving and enjoying the wade by the end of the season. And given the opportunity in still water at Kurnell, the girls are very able board paddlers. Several of the highlights of the season included: Gunnamatta Bay and Kurnell – especially being able to swim in deeper water and using foam nipper boards - and being able to compete in several competitions including Sydney Water, the 4-Way Carnival and Sydney Branch. We have learnt a lot over this season which will be consolidated and developed moving forward to the U9’s. Congratulations to all those nippers who completed the season and to those that gained 100%, 200%, 300% and 400% awards. A big thank you to the parents for helping out this year, especially in the water and having fun races with the girls. Nippers is about seeing the confidence grow in the girls and the smiles on their faces say it all. We encourage the girls to continuing swimming over winter and we look forward to seeing you on the beach and in the water in 2016/17.

Kaylene, Kylie and Michael What an exciting year we have had, it has been wonderful seeing Boys all the boys grow in their strengths! We have had some very challenging

U8

days with the weather but it never stopped us! The boys have learned so much this year all the rules and regulations and also the pressure involved in competition, and may I just say they all smashed it! It has been a pleasure working alongside Scott and Nathan the boys really look up to them, thank you for all your help and support throughout the year! I am super excited to see what next season holds for us. Hope to see you all then. Regards

Santie Wow what a busy season, it only feels like Girls yesterday the girls were at board training in the bay over winter going through the transition from u8s to u9s.

U9

This season we had a team of 35 enthusiastic girls. We had a small group join us for the 1st time, but very pleasingly many completing their 4th year as a Wanda Nipper. This combined group proved challenging at times but with assistant age managers, water safety and parents help we completed a very inclusive season. The Surf Swim and Board race have been introduced this season to our weekly agenda. I have enjoyed each week seeing more and more girls participating in the water events as their nervousness began to subside and confidence in the ocean and on the beach grow. Our group of girls are very supportive of each other and all love to encourage their friends to have a go.

The girls that still need to take the next step to proficiency in the water, don’t give up you can do it. Keep up your swimming training over winter and I can’t wait to see you next year return and develop your surf lifesaving skills further. Congratulations to the 100% attendance girls Hollie A, Matilda B, Ella B, Alexandra C, Harper C, Amelia D, Freya H, Chloe M, Sienna S, Grace S, Indiah T and Keira V. Your parents also need to be congratulated on getting you to nippers each week. Making the decision to turn up each week, rain – hail or shine requires a very high level of dedication. We experienced some very disruptive weather conditions this year and it is a fantastic display of your dedication and parents ‘resolve to have 12 girls gain this record. The Pink Caps experienced their 1st state titles in March at Umina Beach. We had 14 girls compete at the NSW State Titles. During the 3 days of competition the girls established lovely friendships that they will look back on in years to come with fond memories. The girls spent the weekend encouraging and cheering on another on in their events. The weather was brilliant for us, and I’m very excited to learn that many families have already booked for next year’s State Titles. A major highlight for me at State was seeing our ‘C’ board team (that is our 3rd team of 3 girls – 9 girls entered in the event!) not only start but finish the race. We also entered a ‘B’ swim team swimming so well that they placed themselves quite high in the point score of their heat narrowly missing the final. Every girl had a smile on their face over the weekend making it a very enjoyable weekend on the beach.

U9 GIRLS

A huge thankyou to my Assistant Age Managers; Nathan, Geoff, Stefan, Sean and Glenn. You are all brilliant and having you there helping me and the girls makes our morning at the beach a whole lot of fun. At the recent State Titles, thankyou; Todd, and Ben for all of your assistance with marshalling, assisting with tents and water safety duties. I would also to acknowledge all of the Mums and Dads that help with Water safety each week – thank you. Off the beach and equally as important, thank you Kylie for organising our BBQ duty and Trivia night table and prizes. Lastly thanks to the parents that fill the BBQ duty roster and help with our setup days. If it wasn’t for the “Parent Army” nippers just would not happen. Next season will be lots of fun and I am especially looking forward to it. The girls will have the opportunity to join the March Past team and they can also learn and compete in R & R (R & R is my speciality therefore very keen to train a few teams in this discipline). Looking forward to seeing all my little Pink Caps smiling faces return in October.

Katie Congratulations to the U9 Boys on a wonderful 2015/2016 Boys season. The transition from U8’s to U9’s is a big step up and all the boys should be commended on completing their proficiency and making the transition. Obviously all that winter board and swim squad training paid off. All the boys embraced the new events with enthusiasm.

The beach and water events each week really challenged the boys with the varied conditions. These conditions allowed them to read the surf conditions, whether it is a shallow or deep wade, diving under waves, paddling in the surf, running or swimming. It was also great to see some of the boys learning to body surf and paddle boards on waves to shore. Many of the boys also undertook additional carnivals to improve their skills. Whilst the season started off with perfect weather, unfortunately there were a few average days towards the end as the beach was closed. The majority of the boys weathered the storm and had a great time. Numerous boys also began to experience and see the value in midweek training at Wanda and Gunnamatta Bay. Many boys competed at numerous carnivals this year, including Sydney Water, Ohana, 4-way, Branch and State Carnivals. The conditions were varied at each of these events and it was great to see the boys competing hard and do their very best. There were many medals won at the carnivals and the smiles on some of the boys faces when they finished the races was equally rewarding. Well done to the 15 boys who tackled their first State Carnival up at Umina. It was a great effort by all of the boys both on the beach and in the water. A special mention for the A Surf Team, who picked up bronze, a phenomenal achievement. All the boys undertook their surf awareness courses incorporating CPR. This basic knowledge will assist their life skills and hopefully become life savers of the future.

U9 BOYS

Congratulation to the Boys receiving 100%, 200% 300% and 400% awards which is an outstanding achievement, given the changing conditions each session and year. A big thank you to the parents who helped out at the Carnivals and with the BBQ. Also we would like to thank the Committee, our Coaches, the Water Safety, Officials & the other Age Mangers for all their hard work and support. These positions take up considerable amount time without their support Wanda would not function. Well done to all. Enjoy your winter activities and we look forward to seeing you again next season.

Mick and Michael Another season finished! A season full of amazing results, even Girls stronger friendships, rain & thunderstorms (grrr), sunshine & fun.

U10

Where to begin? As we reflect on our amazing group of girls, we are just bursting with pride - we think they are pretty special. The girls do us proud every time they step onto the beach. Whether it is a day at Nippers or representing Wanda at a carnival. The number of positive remarks is outstanding. Polite, brave, friendly, courageous, & most of all great sportsmanship & awesome future life savers. They all look out for each other, and support each other before, during & after races. They do themselves & Wanda proud. Week in & week out our girls gave it their all - in every single event they competed or participated in. The aim of each event was for each girl

U10 GIRLS

to improve their skills and results, and build on what they learn each week at Nippers & Training. And boy did they do that! It is great to see the girls all crowding around the sprint track, flag pits, and water areas cheering each other on. They care as much about the results of their teammates as they do about their own Individual results, and we love that about them. Lots of other clubs see this & comment on the camaraderie among the girls. Next season our girls move on to fibre glass boards. This will see us as a group move on to new & bigger challenges. Bring It On!!! Don’t forget we have a variety of events for our girls to participate & compete in next year:

Beach: Flags Beach Sprints Beach Relay March past R&R

Water: Swim Swim Teams Board Board Relays Board Rescue

Beach & Water: Iron Person Cameron We wouldn’t have this fantastic team of girls if it wasn’t for all the parents, carers & grandparents. Thank you all very very much. Your help & support is greatly appreciated, whether it is helping out at flags, bbq duty, water safety, officiating or just helping out in general.

A massive thank you to all the coaches & committee members who helped out this year. We love all the girls in our age group. They are all individuals & we love them for who they are! We would like to welcome all the new families that joined our U10 Girls Team this season or even returned to Wanda this year. We enjoy having new people join the club. WELCOME to the WANDA Family!!! Sadly this will also be the last season that we will have Leah in our Wanda family team. Leah has been with us since the U6’s. Leah, her parents Kane & Nicole & her brother Dylan will be missed. They have helped out sooo much at the club. We wish them all the best at their new Nippers club. Looking forward to seeing plenty of photos. We will all MISS you!! U10 BOYS

Well another summer has come and gone but what a terrific season for Boys the boys, it was great to welcome all the usual suspects back for another year and hats off to the new boys who gave the impression they had been around for years.

U10

Whilst the Surf conditions were not overly kind in the second half of the season, it was terrific to see how far the boys have come, especially when they had the opportunity to be in the water. But whether on the sand or in the water all the boys should be really proud of their efforts this year. And although their attention spans can be pretty short, when it was time to race or practice they all gave it their best with real enthusiasm (with a little coaxing of course!). It was also nice to see the boy’s good sportsmanship, always encouraging and supporting each other, whilst keeping the competitive spirit alive, it really showed how much they are growing up. To all those that picked up medals at the carnivals during the year and for those that saved the best for the end of the season and competed at state, we are all proud of your huge efforts. I feel that our biggest achievement was not the medals but the fact we had 10 boys go to state to compete and every boy made a final whether individually or as a team. It goes to show that competing as a team is just as important as competing individually. All in all we would like to say congratulations boys, we hope you got as much out of it as Darren, Brad and myself did. Thank you all for being part of the Team in 2015/2016 you all made it fantastic to be there each and every week:

Liam Athanassiou, Logan Burgess, Blake Hodges, Garvyn Kendrigan, Lucas McKinnon, Dane Mitchell, Mohamed Moussa, Anton Park, Jayson Peake, Finn Ramanaukas, Samuel Rossen, Jacob Roukanas, Ramon Saba, Kyan Simpson, Luke Stone, Fletcher Warn and Sonny Williams. Lastly, we would really like to thank all the parents for showing up each week and helping out when required, volunteering as Officials, Water Safety, Set up or BBQ it was great for the sense of Team and Community.

Cheers

Jason and Nicki Another great turn out for the under 11 boys with many training Boys through the winter break demonstrating commitment to improvement and competing at their best for Wanda .

U11

The next season is now only six months away so we will look forward to seeing you all back on the beach then!!!

The season started slow with large surf conditions although that allowed the boys to complete all there surf education requirements.

Gerard and Darren

The boys competed at all carnivals and excelled at the Sydney branch carnival bringing home numerous medals and showing the depth in this squad with a strong presence in all finals.

The weather has not been overly kind to Girls us this season yet the girls still managed to get lots of training and surf education done! We welcomed in some new girls to our age group which has been great and many girls mentored these new ones in aspects of Nippers weekly activities. We have also enjoyed pairing with the U11 Boys on many occasions this year and the spirit of competition is always present between the girls and the boys yet aside from this you can see a great age group dynamic forming with friendships and team spirit alive and well. All the girls have trained hard and adapted easily to fibreglass boards, each girl has tried hard and improved their skills over the past season both on the beach and in the water. We had success with the swim team at State winning a bronze medal.

U11

40

We are all looking forward to the next season, here is hoping for better weather.

Whilst the level of competition at state championships got stronger the Wanda squad made their club proud, with a strong presence in all semis and finals. Some boys managed to come home with medals the others with personal bests, but all came home with the attitude of doing better for their club next year. What a fabulous group of boys and parents with the right attitude to sportsmanship and mate ship. Big thanks to Andrew Cole and Phil Webb for their support throughout the year.

U11 BOYS

2016 saw some new members join Under 12s girls – Amina Powditch, Amber Martin and Girls Jacinta Lewins. Great to have some new faces in the group and some more beachies on the team.

U12

I am very lucky to have such a great group of girls, they really make my job as Manager easy. They are all very supportive of each other and get on extremely well. This year the girls have had another great year both in the water and thanks to Tilly on the beach. A number of medals were achieved at many of the carnivals but notable results were at 4 Ways where every girl received a medal. It was great day seeing all the smiling faces and no girls missing out. Another tough year getting into the water, especially after Christmas with the beach being closed on many of the nipper’s days, but to the girls credit when they could get in the water they made the most of it. They girls are improving every year which showed in their results at the State Championships this year. We had a girl in every water event final except Iron person and were so close to getting our first medal at State in the Water since the wade relay many years ago, with Tegan and Zoe coming fourth in the Board Rescue. Tilly having another great State Championships with ‘GOLD’ in the flags, and this year saw a number of the under 12 girls compete in the R & R and placed 7th. Katie and I would like to thanks all the parents for another great year, without their ongoing help doing water safety, officiating and generally helping out with the kids it would all not be possible. Keep safe until next season

Katie and Susan

U12 GIRLS

Well, what a season that was! With all the boys returning plus a couple Boys of new comers to strengthen our team, we were all looking forward to a great season.

U12

The boy’s preparation started with the Sydney Water series, with all the boys who competed showing their potential for the season. Week by week you could see their confidence grow, especially in those boys who were a bit hesitant the previous season. The camaraderie and support the boys give each other on a weekly basis is great to see. Unfortunately, as the summer progressed, the weather gods were not so kind to us (big surf & beach closed again!!) but we still carried on with a Wanda smile! With strong competition coming into the 4 Way carnival, the boys stood up to the challenge with a lot of them producing PB’s in their events. With a gruelling training schedule the boys were fit and ready for Branch, where Jake and Henri qualified for Ironman and our two Board Rescue teams qualified to compete in these events at State. Then the preparation for State began. Once again we told them how calm it would be at State (Umina) and finally we got it right. With the tide out the Swim turned into a run/swim/run which didn’t really suit our boys but the team of Henri, Jake, Evan and Morgan came up with a Silver medal. (Yes boys, you do need to run train for the swim!). On the beach at State the relay team put in a great run but were unlucky to DQ in their heat. Brooklyn secured 7th in the flags and Josh just missed out on a medal with a 4th place. Once again, great effort boys.

Back in the water, a few of the boys produced PB’s, getting into quarter and semi-finals at State which is no mean feat and is something to be proud of. The last day of State was to be a gruelling punishing day, especially for Jake who was in EVERY event. Awesome effort. To start the day, an inspirational swim by Henri doing what he does best, securing a Gold in the Swim and Jake using “dial a wave” on the outside edge to get Silver was a moment to be remembered by all the boys and parents cheering them on. The Cameron team of Henri, Jake, Josh and Tilly once again coming up with the goods and a Silver medal. If only the run home was a metre longer, Tilly would have got the gold. We can’t believe that’s another nippers season over with and we would like to commend the boys on their sportsmanship at carnivals throughout the season and doing Wanda proud. Finally, a big thank you to the beach trainers and Rossi and his board training team for all your hard work with the boys, not only during the Nippers season but the off-season too. Thank you also to all the parents who’ve supported the boys (and us) on the beach throughout the season and especially those parents who volunteer their time for water safety, set up & BBQ duty. We look forward to seeing you all back at Wanda next season.

Mark and Virginia

U12 BOYS

Another great year for the u/13 girls. This year we welcomed 8 new girls to Girls the group - Cielo, Emma, Ellen, Bianca, Kenzie, Mia, Rochelle and Ahnika. Along with our old faces in Lara, Sammy B, Sammy A, Kayla, Lilly, Gracie, Hayley, Amber, Amelia, Kyra and Ella, we all had a ball. The girls got on well and supported each other throughout every week as our new girls gained more and more confidence in the surf. The weather came to the party for the first half of the season but unfortunately the weather and surf conditions didn’t allow for a third Champo day, however the competition in the water and on the sand was fierce but friendly.

U13

Some competition highlights from branch included Gold medals in Board Rescue, Surf Teams, Board Relay, Cameron Relay, Iron person (Gracie), Board Race (Gracie) and Board Riding (Sam Babister). And who could forget Lara’s famous victory over 428 bluebottles. At state this year the competition was tight and the girls made many finals including Gracie and Ella in the Iron woman and swim, Gracie in board, Gracie, Ella, Lilly and Lara in the swim team final, Gracie, Ella and Lara in the Board Relay final and Sam Babister, Sam Archer, Kayla and Hayley in our first ever sprint team final. Lots of 4th, 5th and 6th places with unfortunately no medals, but the girls gave their all and did Wanda proud. Once again I have to thank Todd McLachlan for his assistance this year. I would also like to thank all the parents that help throughout the year and look forward to seeing everyone back next year.

U13 GIRLS

At the end of another great year at Wanda it’s great to be able to sit and Boys reflect upon the season just past, whilst already looking forward to next year.

U13

Once again it’s been a privilege to be age manager to a fantastic group of boys who have been well supported by a group of parents that are more involved in this club than any other sporting group I’ve been involved with. That shows Wanda spirit at its best. It was great to see the familiar faces return at the beginning of the year and with a few new faces it didn’t take long for the new guys to settle in. It was fantastic to watch the new guys form friendships, laughing with and following the more experienced kids - practicing, picking up tips and learning. It was amazing how quickly these talented and brave boys picked up the basics, persisting and continuing to improve week after week in some extremely challenging conditions. Yet again we had to contend with some challenging weather and surf conditions that somehow seemed to pinpoint specific days and resulted in the Championship days being reduced to only 2. This made it difficult to choose our teams and it’s a real credit to the boys that they all respected the committee’s decisions and did their absolute best at every opportunity. It was noticeable that whenever competition started all our boys took it very seriously, became focused and gave their absolute best. A show of maturity that was pleasing to watch. It’s obvious our boys are growing into young men, making their

42

own decisions and becoming more independent. It’s an honour to be associated with these guys and as a parent I’m sure I speak for us all when I say they have a great future ahead of them. Thankfully State Age was not a repeat of the last 3 years and with perfect weather and great surf conditions it meant all the boys were able to compete in as many events as possible. Some great results both in the water as well as on the beach. With Wanda wining the All Age Board Relay and coming 3rd in the All Age Beach Relay it was no surprise that we once again took out 2nd place at state. Congratulations. There are way too highlights to list them all but I did want to mention just a few that for me, signify what Nippers is all about : At Gunnamatta when “Coaches “ Max and Finn spent the morning teaching Thomas to paddle the board , get his position right and improve his skills. Whenever we were on duty - There was no shortage of parents and kids willing to pitch in and lend a hand. This was most notable at the Sutherland To Surf when on a cold winters day we had 35 people turn up to help with the unloading and distribution of bags. It was another great season, one of my most rewarding as Age Manager, and competitively one of our most successful seasons ever. I look forward to seeing you all again when we re-join in October for our final year of Nippers.

U13 BOYS

U14 Girls

The U/14 girls have made the most of their final year in Wanda JAG.

During the season, all the girls showed their commitment to Surf Life Saving by becoming SRC accredited and joining the team of Patrolling members at Wanda - something they all should be very proud of. Each Sunday the U/14 girls intertwined their own event activities with assisting the younger age groups both on the beach and in the water. This was a true testimony to the respect they held for their role as leaders of the JAG community (and maybe the love they have for riding waves). Of course the U/14’s year wouldn’t be the same without fundraising. A special note of appreciation should be made to Julie Ann Warn and the Fundraising Committee for organizing a season filled with shaved ice, BBQ’s, raffles and chocolate drives. All the girls, and parents, committed their time throughout the season to raising enough money for the annual U/14’s trip to Tallebudgera. The trip was fantastic and we’re sure it will be a lasting memory for all the girls. The competitive side of the U/14 girls shone through yet again this year. We had high levels of participation at all competitions and the girls continued their history of amazing individual and team results at both JAG and senior carnivals. Josh and I have been fortunate to be surrounded by a great group of parents who were always supportive of us, the girls and Wanda. Thank you parents for the time and effort you’ve put into JAG over the years.

U14 GIRLS

We are honoured to have managed this U/14 group. Over the years they’ve shown us how brave they are, how inclusive they are and what great story tellers they are. What we will remember of each of the girls is how absolutely amazing they all are as individuals. Congratulations ‘Yellow Caps’ and thank you.

Josh and Paul

U14 Boys

The boy’s final season has come to an end and I am pleased, as is Ross to be a part of this group of teenagers.

We started off with 43 keen and enthusiastic boys 8 years ago and finished this year with 13 teenage men who have achieved their SRC. Something we can all be very proud of. They boys continued to attend every carnival with enthusiasm and a happy go lucky attitude and achieved some outstanding results this year. Luca winning gold in surfing at the 4way and Branch Kane Silver in surfing at the 4 way and bronze it the board and Cameron relay at branch Corey bronze in surfing at the 4 way A swim team - Bronze at 4way - Sam, Nathan Scott and Kalani. A swim team bronze at branch Sam, Scott, Kalani and James Board Relay bronze at 4 way - Sam, Nathan, Scott Board Relay bronze at Branch - Sam, Scott and Kane

U14 BOYS

At State the boys made the final of the swim teams where they finished 9th and both A & B board relay teams made the final. While Nathan and Sam also made the final of the swim. A great achievement from all. This year the boys also got the opportunity to compete up and train with the senior squad, this has helped them immensely and it was great to see, Sam, Nathan, Kalani and Kane competing and senior state and along with Luca and Scott will be heading up to the Sunshine Coast for their 1st Aussie carnival. I am sure they will give a good account of themselves. This year wasn’t all about competition, they boys completed their SRC with each boy taking up a position on the patrol roster, something I hope all of them keep doing going forward. They were also heavily involved in raising funds for their end of season trip and on behalf of the boys I would like to thank the fund raising committee for their efforts and the minders who took the group away. From all reports the boys and girl thoroughly enjoyed the experience and cemented what will turn out to be long term friendships. To all my assistants over the years, Knappo, Dan, Mick and most importantly Ross it has been great to share the experience with you all and at times thank god there has been a bar for a beer at the end of the day. To the boys coaches, Dean, Rossi, Charlie, Piercey, Potty and Kenny. Thanks for your efforts, they have come a long way and have you all to thank for that. We have gone from not having a look in at medal to winning medals and making finals and I know the boys and their parents are very appreciate of your time and efforts, as am I.

To the Wanda Committees over the years under the guidance of Charlie, Steve and more recently Ian, thank you for your encouragement and support of the boys and myself, you and your committees have made the task of turning up to nippers an enjoyable and memorable one for the boys, myself and our families, to which we are all forever grateful. To all the a parents, thanks for bring the boys to nippers and volunteering, whether it be for set/ pack up, water safety, fund raising bbq cooking or just bring the boys to carnival. I has been great to meet you all and thank you for your friendship. Finally I would like to thank all the boys for making Ross and my time enjoyable and memorable. It has been great to share the nipper ride with you all. You are a fine group of young men. So to Kane, Luca, Corey, Nathan, Sam, Kalani, Jack, Scott, Oliver, James, Sonny, Wyatt and Isaac. Keep being involved, whether it be from a competition perspective or as a patrolling member. The surf club is a great environment for developing long and lasting friendships, while giving back to the community. Good luck with the rest of your surf lifesaving journeys and I hope to see you all down at the beach next season, doing water safety/patrolling or competing. Cheers

Director of Surf Sports Report This season I have had the pleasure of leading Wanda SLSC Surf Sports in developing athletes, delivering structured programs and providing a range of Surf Sports open to all members.

I was extremely proud to be the Director Surf Sports and have been fortunate to have met some of the most talented and determined women and men. I watched the Surf Sports group develop throughout the season and improve with every carnival. At the start of the season Greg Pierce floated the idea to create a Surf Sports Executive (SSE) that included Director Surf Sports, Deputy Director Surf Sports, Head Coach and Team Manager. The SSE were responsible for development, logistics, communication and finance were planned and executed. This resulted in structure, under budget, strong communication lines between athletes and committee. New Surf Sports initiatives included Nathan Smith coaching and programming, Josh Wood motivational speaker, Aussies rehab zone, Bree Jones Pilates classes, 100 members at Friday night Club Championships (including masters), ski paddlers technique session held by former Olympian Jimmy Walker, assessments and screenings provided by Jock Campbell.

During the season we hit all of our benchmarks which could only be possible with the full support from the Board of Directors led by President Mark Sargeant, JAG and its fantastic Chairman Ian Blackhall. Thank you to Greg Allum Chair Wanda Open Carnival, Trevor Taylor, Julie Adams, SSE, coaches, Surf Sports Committee, parents, supporters, James Moriatis – of course and the sponsors/donors who provide the financial support for members equipment and services. Special mention to Danielle McMahon for assisting us with our kids who adore you, the masters women who have provided so much inspiration to members within and external to Wanda SLSC and my wife Meg who over the last 12 months gave birth to our son Archer, gained her bronze medallion, spinal, ARC awards, patrols and dual Australian bronze medalist, I am a very proud husband. It was great to be part of a tenacious team this season, best of luck to the members competing at the World Titles in Amsterdam, NSW Pool Rescue Championships and NSW Surf Board Riding this winter.

Head Coach's Report The 2015/2016 season was certainly a long but successful one for Wanda. Victory in the Steve Warren cup and the Interclub followed by a 2nd place at the Branch Championships, 3rd at the State Championships and 11th at the Aussies is something we should be pleased about. However I have no doubt we can improve on these results in the upcoming seasons.

Boat Captain's Report While its easy to sit back and say “not everything went to plan”, the positives far outweighed the negatives. Our section achieved a 12 x Bronze Medallions, 2 x Silver Medallions and an ARTC award.

VETS/RESERVE

On the water our results improved, with all crews racing well and were more than competitive in both marathons and short course racing. Once again our focus was on the Warilla Bowls South Coast Series where we finished 5th out of 27 clubs in the overall point score. Off the water it was a credit to see the effort put in by all members over the season. A huge thanks to the following for all their help through the season, Les Townsend, Ron Doolan, Nathan Spinner, Mark Davies, Dave Chapman and Ron Smith. Also to Dave McGrath, Paul Auglys and Geoff Considine for towing our boats everywhere.

Jamie Walker Boat Launch Three years ago, Wanda lost a great man and there isn’t a day that goes by that he is not remembered fondly in some way.

On August 9th, the Jamie Walker Boat Launch was a fitting tribute to the late Jamie Walker, respected Life member of Wanda SLSC, loving husband to Bev, wonderful father to her three boys and our great friend. Jamie was a larger than life character and always took to the time to talk to members young and old and had such pleasure in seeing his beloved Club grow from strength to strength. With the recent completion of the Stage 2 building works at Wanda, we know if he was looking down today he would be a very proud man. We would also like take the opportunity to thank and recognise our sponsors who made this boat launch possible. Club on East, long Term sponsor of Wanda’s Boat Section whose significant financial contributions over the years has assisted in purchasing multiple Surf Boats. The Shire Local Banking who are now into their 5th year of partnership with Wanda SLSC and today’s Boat launch was their second boat made possible in a joint arrangement with Club on East. We thank you on behalf of our Wanda members!

48

Born in Wolverhampton in England, ‘Humphrey’ was larger than life, a straight talking but colourful and immensely charismatic character who started off in boat rowing. After joining the Wanda Club in 1968 from Garie, he went on to work in various positions over the next 40 years – including four years as Club President and 10 years as Club Captain. He was involved in various sub committees including Wanda’s iconic Sutherland to Surf Race, touring teams, and many surf carnivals – including the 1988 Bicentennial

Australian Championships held on Cronulla’s beaches. His dedication and commitment to Wanda SLSC was recognised in 1981, when Jamie Walker became a Life Member. “You name it, he did it,” said Wanda club president Mark Sargeant. “I can’t think of a better person to have a boat named after him. He was a mate and mentor to so many, young and old, and he had a direct impact on many past presidents.”

Beach Captain's Report The Wanda beach team had a very solid season, with some great results at the top like Ali Najem and Chloe Gentle winning Gold at the Aussie Titles in the beach 2km, Annika Durante getting a bronze and Peter Axiotis breaking through with a great win in the U19 sprint at State Titles. We also had the exciting emergence of youngsters Kai Hammond who was the U13 nippers Marathon and sprint champ also running up with the big boys in the U15’s to win Branch and come third at State and the coming of age of Jamee Smith who was the surprise packet of the season with some very solid results.

Highlights of the season:

was Emily Rohr coming 4th in her first season as an open competitor in the 2km beach run, Dee McCarthy a really close 4th in the masters 2km and Jamee Smith and Josh Fernandes both making the National beach sprint final in the U17’s.

1

Australian Titles (National Titles) GOLD MEDALS Ali Najem – Open 2km Beach Run Chloe Gentle – U15 2km Beach Run SILVER MEDALS

Donna Cox – Masters 2km Beach Run U19 Beach Relay Team - (Peter Axiotis, Josh Fernandes, Adam Leabeater, Jamee Smith)

3

Ali Najem and Chloe Gentle’s continued rise as athletes and their great wins at the Aussie titles. Chloe turned the tables on the State title holder where she placed second as did Ali with two dominant performances, which showed great courage and reward for their dedicated and consistent year round training. Both got exactly what they deserved.

Annika Durante – U15 2km Beach Run Rory Darkins – 2km Beach Run New Zealand National Titles Greer Mallet – Masters Beach Sprint Lauren Campbell – Masters Beach Sprint Meggsey Brannock – Masters beach flags Masters Beach relay Team – (Greer Mallet, Lauren Campbell, Mel Campbell, Meggsey Brannock) Other Aussie highlights that don’t get much press, but deserve a mention

Last year at State titles we had the top 3 in the female 2km beach run, not quite as good, but still a great moment we had 2nd, 3rd,and 4th with Chloe Gentle, Annika Durrante and Lara Saunders filling those spots. Peter Axiotis (JT or Jonathon Thurston) breaking through to win the U19 beach sprint State title was well deserved and reward for many hard years of training.

BRONZE MEDALS

4

Old man Dean Reilly running as well as ever and taking a third at the State Titles in the beach sprint and running well at Aussies to make the semi finals.

6

The open Men’s beach relay team (Dean Reilly, Matt Lewis, Jesse Thus and Peter Axiotis) almost taking out the State title from the powerful Collaroy beach relay team.

7

Our New Zealand cricket import Rory Darkins, going back home to represent Wanda in the New Zealand National Titles and coming 3rd in the Beach 2km Run.

8

The emergence of Emzac – which is a combination of Izaac Smith and Emily Rohr who are the new glamour couple on the beach, much the same as Brangelina

Some other season highlights that stood out included:

2

Melissa Campbell – Masters 2km Beach Run

5

Sydney Branch titles where our runners won six of the eight-2km beach run gold medals up for grabs. Women Emily Rohr Opens, Emma Brown U19, Chloe Gentle U15, and Ali Najem (open), Lachy Crawford U17, Kai Hammond U15. With Johnny Woods running into 2nd ahead of 2 times World champ. A pretty good day that.

There were so many great moments from the season to mention all of them, so here’s a snapshot of everyone including our athlete rating system, it’s back by popular demand;

Jock’s Rating of Athlete’s (non-scientific) If I haven’t got the spelling of your name correctly, boo-hoo, I did my best and you should see some of the names I get called with a name like Jock. If I’ve missed someone I am very sorry. Ali Najem – Sydney Branch Gold, silver at State, Gold at Australian Titles. Beat the two time World Champ in every race this season and beat an exceptional field at Aussies to claim gold. Won Sydney branch Athlete of the year! Works exceptionally hard, great team player, well done. Could do with some personality improvement classes.

49

Peter Axiotis – AKA Jonathon Thurston or JT, winning Sydney Branch and State Gold medals in the U19 beach sprint and sporting a 1990’s haircut, Peter had a very solid season. Was an integral member of the open relay team that came second at State and the U19 relay team, which got double silver at State and nationals. Needs to get his eating habits right prior to nationals to avoid illness. Matt Lewis – a powerful and relaxed athlete, had a very solid season as a star member of the Relay team, semi finalist at Aussies and 4th at State titles in the beach sprint. A great talent. Dean Reilly – Snake has still got it. Came 3rd at the Wanda Carnival where the Mark Leabeater Trophy was on the line and said he would have rather have won that than State out of respect for his great mate Mark. Came 3rd at State and semis at Aussies, Snake was our fastest and best-performed senior runner throughout the season. Great to see him still running so well. Bree Jones – In 2005/6 this young girl ran in the U15’s and floated across the sand. She won the State title that year, but then decided to do the real sport of triathlon. In great news this year she returned to the beach and ran in the Open State 2km titles and came a great second. In the race she just held on to beat Emily Rohr in a great finish between the two. Unfortunately injury derailed her Aussies campaign, but it was great to see her back. Mel Campbell – After not going to compete this season in her 40th year on the planet got roped into the masters relay team, where she won silver and bronze at State titles got a pair of silvers in the 2km masters at State and Aussies. Through marriage, a very lucky lady! Mitch Palmer – Back physically from Peru, mentally still on tour, did really well considering. Placed 10th at nationals in the 2km, as I say every year, could be anything!

50

Rory Darkins – our recruit from New Zealand and Sutherland Cricket, working me at Jock Athletic, Rory Came third at the NZ National Titles in Whakatane to represent Wanda. Great job good to see you in a real sport and bringing glory to Wanda on an international scale. Emily Rohr – The most important part of #Emzak came of age this year in her first year of seniors. Turning from last year a runner, to this year a serious athlete. 3rd at State and 4th at nationals, a really solid year. Chloe Gentle – 1st Sydney Branch U15, 2nd State Titles U15, Australian Champion U15. Beat many senior stars in the club carnivals. A great kid and has secured an internship with club sponsor Jock Athletic.

MASTERS 2KM

Lara Saunders – 4th U15 Sate Titles, 6th at Australian Titles. A fantastic athlete, far better than her dad was. Lara had a very tough season with illness, but kept her enthusiasm up and support of her team mates. If coming 4th at State and 6th at Aussies is a bad year, look out when you have a good one. Learnt the ancient old art of sledging this season, particularly of #Emzac I’m so proud! Lauren Campbell – Clearly now considered the best athlete in her family, Lauren got a swag of medals at in masters Branch, State and Nationals this season in flags, beach sprint and relays. Improved again this season and had a solid year in opens as well. Likes to play 20 questions. Jock Campbell – Old, fat and slow – Masters Gold at Branch, Silver at state, rubbish at Aussies. Annika Durante – A runner of great promise. 3rd at State and 3rd at Nationals in the U15 2km Beach run with a couple of gutsey performances. Due to her swimming and board training Annika had to fit her running in by herself. I was so impressed to see her out training on her own, in the dark. A tough road to travel by your-self, well played. Emma Brown – the quiet achiever Emm had a solid year winning Branch U19 2km and won Bronze at State Titles. Could do really well next

CHLOE

season in the U19’s and is a highly recommended babysitter. John Woods – Entered races when he could around his water commitments and ran very well. 2nd place to Ali at Sydney branch 2km open title, running past the World Champ in the final stages. Turning into a very strong runner Scott Clancy – Great to see Scotty running well with the club. Had some injury problems through the season, but managed them and ran well. Dee McCarthy – her goal has been to win a medal. This season she took her running to a new level, knocked off large chunks of time off her races and won a silver at Branch and State masters and a very close 4th at Aussies. Going from strength to strength and still holds the title as the food sergeant.

Donna Cox – Superwoman, previous 17 times Australian Waterski Champ, started her Surf Lifesaving Career in Perth as boatie with some great success, now won everything she had a go at in her Masters events. Won Branch, State and in a very rare moment Donna didn’t win Nationals, only a silver medal! Look out everyone, she’s quite determined for Worlds!!! Josh Fernandes – one of the actual real athletes in the club. Doing very well on the track, it’s great to see that Josh still manages to compete for us. Making the U17 beach sprint final and winning a silver medal in the U19’s relay at nationals. Lachy Crawford – Another mid season transfer. Training with me at Jock Athletic since he was 6, he came to me and asked if she could join Wanda and transfer from North Cronulla. A great addition to our team, winning the U17s at Sydney branch, coming 8th at State and unfortunately couldn’t make it to Aussies. Lockley as he is known has learnt to put on his own shoes this season and with experience gained from taking part in The Catalina Wine Mixer should have a great year next season. Sarah Brown – did well despite limited training. A talented natural runner, with some regular training could do really well. Great to have her with us. Came 8th at national titles and getting stronger every year. Jamee Smith – The surprise package of the year. Had a really solid and progressive season with performances, concluding with a second at nationals in the U19 relay (up an age group) and making the U17 beach sprint final at National titles. Tate Wilkins – after taking a mid season overseas hiatus (his second “schoolies”) take started to pick up as the season went on. Despite definitely not running this season (last years quote) Tate came back strongly and finished off the season strongly. Should be back to his best next season.

James Karagiannis – had an injuryplagued season, and unfortunately missed carnivals. Despite this managed to anchor the U19 relay team at the State titles to second place. Bigger things to come for James in the future!

Shelby Wilde – a very enjoyable member of our team, has some solid performances in her first year of U17, and ran up in the Open relay team. Now realises she could do quite a bit better if she trained more than once per week.

Adam Leabeater – In true Leabeater style injured his knee competing in something other than sport. Missed most of the season through a knee injury, but came good for the National titles. Despite not nearly at his best managed to get a silver medal in the U19 beach relay team at Aussies.

Ella Southwell – who? Did well despite not coming to training. Is a fearless flagger and hopefully we can keep her interested for her second year of U17’s.

Jesse Thus – In his first year of beach sprinting, Jesse had a solid start to his beach sprinting career coming 5th at State titles, making the quarters at Nationals and was a member of the Open relay team that came 2nd at State Titles. Asks more questions than the entire Nippers section and the female relay team was named after him. Greer Mallet – Second year back into the sport after a 10 year break, Greer had a very solid year. Greer won an array of medals including silver at State in the masters category, bronze at nationals both in the Beach Sprint and was the spiritual leader of the Open and Masters relay team (Team Jesse) that got double bronze in the masters at State and Aussies. Areas to improve – choice of man friend (boyfriend)! Clayton Beranek – Another who had an injury plagued season and never quite hit his peak. Despite this Clayton was always happy and there to support his team mates at carnivals, a great team man! Kurt Stavrou – A reluctant “beachy”. Came 9th at Aussies in the flags, a very natural and explosive runner. Could be a star on the sand, big things to come for him.

Thanks to all our coaches who worked tirelessly through the season to help get such solid results. These include Tyrone Courtney (the prodigal son has returned), Wayne Owen, Melissa Campbell, Zane Campbell, Jock Campbell (Sydney Branch Coach of the year), Rory Darkins and our young apprentice Chloe Gentle. Thank you to Mr Leabeater for all the help on the admin side of things, a huge help. Well done to you all.

We had a real team atmosphere at training and races amongst the club. This was much to do with many of the iron-people and sprinters joining in our sessions during the season, which helped build great camaraderie amongst the club. It’s great to see everyone happy with each other’s success and the spirit and culture developing amongst the club. Another really enjoyable season with only better things to come. It’s always great to win medals at Branch, State and Nationals. Look out Rescue 2016 we’re coming for you! Cheers

Jock Campbell

Michaela Sargeant – Another reluctant beachy, ran in the Open women’s relay team with style, very powerful. Hopefully next season we see her more in the flags as well. Caitlin Smith – a very nice runner. Has another year of U19’s and can do really well if she turns up to more than one training session every 2 weeks.

R & R Report The 2015-16 season was again a very successful one for the R & R section of Wanda Surf Club. The group came away from the Aussies with 2 golds and silver from three starts, pretty impressive in my eyes. I would like to thank the coaches, namely Gordon McKirdy and John Douglas, for their tireless efforts on the beach juggling coaching and officiating commitments throughout the season. Also thank you to the Wanda representatives who officiate in the great event: Paula Cox, Yvonne Holland, Tony Holland, Anita Pryke, Solly Stephens, John Douglas, Glenn Bell, Gordon McKirdy, Brock Douglas. These are the people who give up their time to make our club and are a big contribution on why we can compete at carnivals. R & R could not be as successful without the continued support from our sponsors, both TWH Transport and Hales Redden Chartered Accountants. The Wanda teams would not able to walk onto the arena without our reels that were driven around during the season by Glenn Bell, Tait Brannock, Stuart Smith, Kurt Melville and Gordon McKirdy. Finally it was a very special moment for the club and R & R section to have the new Gavin Johnson Reel completed and presented this season. It was a great day in honour of the man, with his family present as the reel was donated to the club earlier in the year.

Blake McCrindle R & R Captain

Open Male 5 Person and Open 6 Person R & R What a fantastic result. Another Gold medal at Aussies in the Open Male 5 Person and a very close second in the Open 6 Person event. The continued success of this team is a great reward for unprecedented dedication. Few will be aware that Grant Sandstrom won his first State title in the Open Male 5 Person event in 1992 with Col Jones and I in the team. This Aussies Gold is Grant’s 4th in this event almost 25 years later. The bulk of last year’s 5 Man winners transferred from Bondi to Coogee to strengthen their team and looked invincible throughout the summer. We managed to compete at most carnivals, often with Brock, Kurt or Grant arriving at the beach directly from the airport, and we always had the gun teams looking over their shoulder. A close 2nd place at State, again without a coach due to my

52

refereeing commitments, indicated we were on track and a freakish “dropped” line at the end of the belt swim was the only point we lost in winning the event at Aussies. History was never on our side in the 6 Person event, having won in 2011, 2013 and 2015 (every odd year). We were again joined at the last possible moment by Qatar’s no.1 R & R competitor, but couldn’t go back to back. I’m aware of where we can improve and considering we only lost by 0.12 (which equates to 6 seconds in the swim), I’m sure we’re a big chance of winning in 2017.

Open Mixed 5 Person R & R Confronted with the loss of one experienced competitor in Glenn Bell, I talked an even more “experienced” competitor in Col Jones into a comeback. Fresh from the Coolangatta Gold, I knew he could handle the physical side of the event, but he still needed to quickly learn a new position from when he last competed with us almost 25 years ago. To form

major problems. The second heat we improved by 10 points. What a result for such a young team. Next season we have to try and attend all training sessions and get the results we deserve. Training to commence as soon as Nippers return. Thanks mums and dads for your help. and ask Troy not to talk during the event.

John Douglas Coach

Under 15 R & R Report for Season 2015-2016 a “mixed team”, I needed another female to join Emily and after months of scouring the R & R ranks for someone willing to train, the happiest person in R & R – Katie Spinner – jumped on board.

were plenty this year) will learn from that and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Katie’s last R & R event was in an Open Female team I coached to win Aussies over ten years ago. So why couldn’t she repeat the effort three kids later!

Under 12`s 5 Person R & R Report for Season 2015-2016

Of course, credit must be given to one of the best combinations in the history of R & R. Brock and Grant are now the most successful R & R competitors that Wanda has ever had. I also want to acknowledge the application to training and the gutsy swims that Emily puts in against the men as well as the commitment of Stuart, Blake and Kurt to train and compete with the mixed side during the year. Thanks also for the “guest appearances” by both Joannas, Katelyn, Ebony and Grace. In closing, I’d like to mention what a pleasure it has been to coach under two young and enthusiastic sectional captains in Blake McCrindle and Izaak Smith. I know the belt swimmers appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining our equipment which is the best in Australia. Unfortunately for Britney there was a slip up at Aussies, but those new to belt races (and there

Team: Scarlett Blackhall, Ellefteria Kotsis, Carly Osborne, Jade Rossen, and Indianna Ryan (youngest team in the competition) Results: State Finalist I was happy to be approached to help coordinate R & R Teams in the Junior Club and with the help of parents I decided to take on an under 12 team. I knew this would be a big task as the 5 person is a very detailed event for under 12`s. After talking with the team I selected appropriate positions for each individual. Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning were selected for training. Unfortunately, everyone could not attend all training sessions. Anyway we persisted and managed to learn all the sections. As yet we had not competed in a Carnival. However, decided to enter the under 14 event at the State Titles. Our objective was to get through the event without major errors. The day arrived and we had a nervous team, nervous parents and a nervous coach. We managed to get through the first heat without

Team: Sarah Brown, Eloise Cantlon, Isabella Conroy, Gemma Cooke, Emma Phillpot Results: Bronze State Titles Firstly, I must thank my assistant Colleen Cantlon for handling major disputes besides organising competitors and reel to carnivals. She went beyond the call of duty. Also Pauline Brown was a great help over the final part of the season. Thank you to the other parents for transporting the team to training and carnivals. It had to happen. I knew you could do it after putting the event together over and over at training. A bronze at the State Titles and well deserved. The silver medal just out of our grasp. Anyway you had two good looking people on the day to collect the medals. Unfortunately, we didn`t go to the Aussies. The team that came second at the State managed to come equal first on points, however came second on a countback. A medal was there for the taking. Next season the real event “Belt Swims” and I am looking forward to it. Gym programs have been put together for light sessions. We will commence these sessions when the season starts. Good luck for your winter sports.

board captain's report Firstly thanks to the whole team! What a Year! Special thanks to Greg and Tait for leading the way and being there for everyone throughout the season. I would also like to thank all those who spent time coaching the board squad this year - Charlie, Greg, Cam, Chris, Hayden and Nathan. Thank you particularly to Nathan for writing the programs and for his mentoring and coaching, being a great role model for everyone to aspire to. What an awesome year from our under 15’s to our open board competitors. Our results show that we are one of, if not the strongest

board section in Australia. Our individual efforts are still a work in progress, however our teams have been successful through great mateship. The teams assembled and the results achieved this year have proven that we have some of the most talented board teams abroad. Evidence of this was shown in the open men’s board relay where Wanda and Northcliff were the only two clubs with more than one team in the final. Well done. I look forward to

seeing our U15 age group continue to improve and strengthen our club. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for an enjoyable and successful season. I believe the board section will continue to be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come, the depth of talent and comradely is something special in our section.

Crust/Snap Spring Beach Classic The cooler conditions were a welcome change for the 250 entrants that participated in the 10th Wanda Crust/Snap Spring Beach Classic.

Wanda’s strong contingency of 2Km runners showed that they are equally successful in the newly introduced 4Km event with all place getters both male and female being Wanda members. The traditional 8Km race was a hotly contested event attracting both international and local World Champions, whilst other contestants were happy to compete for fun and to enjoy our beautiful Bate Bay beach. Female winner

54

Audrey Amiya-Hall had only recently returned home after racing overseas and proved she was still our leading lady. Rory Darkins ( Jock Athletic Coach and Fitness First Wanda Platinum Instructor ) had a good incentive to win the race - “I had entered the race weeks ago as Jock wanted us all to take part as part of our training program however I was called into work unexpectedly at Fitness First Wanda Platinum so he had to ask if he could have a

quick break from work in order to run the race so there was no time to dawdle”. Thankyou to Jock Campbell, Dean McMahon, Marg Ryall and all the Wanda Members for helping out on the day. Wanda SLSC would also like to thank Crust Pizza Cronulla, Snap Printing and the local community for their continued support of this event.

Ski Captain's Report We started the season in Spring to the middle of Autumn long summer of competition. All the competitors that went to the earlier Summer of Surf and Sydney Waters they were the ones who placed earlier and at big carnivals, who lifted at State and Aussies.

In the sections there were U17, U19, Opens and Masters if you were keen you should have shown up not half way through the season,we all learn from this. We have the coaches, team captains, competition management, head coaches and the club committee for all craft subsidies we should all be thankful. On a good note we all went very well: U17 Women Lauren McMahon, Lucy Furniss, Britney Pierce, Georgia Sinclair, Olivia Taper. U17 Men Kurtis Smith, Tyler Nott, Kurt Stavrou. U19 Women Madeleine Taper. U19 Men Aidan McColm, Izaak Smith. Open Women Abby Schott, Danielle McMahon, Izel Tuncer, Michaela Sargeant, Elyssa Pierce, Katie Allum. Open Mens Paul Buttel, Michael Georgaris Jnr., Hayden Allum, Mitchell Allum, Brodie Schott, Mitchell Rofe, Ben Bolewski, Joel Bolewski, Cameron Pyett, Jake Little, John Woods, Scott Allen, Mick Mead, Troy Ryan, Ken Smith, Michael Georgaris Snr.

All divisions were consistent and did not drop off. The young ones in their lst year stepped up in age and were exceptional. All the open sections went well - both women and men. U17, U19 Doubles and Mixed Doubles all achieved their goals. The Ski Paddlers in Taplin relays also did a great job in teams. Very hard to pick out who were good and who were the best in all divisions. As long as you were happy in yourself and you achieved your goal. Big thanks to Greg Pierce, Tait Brannock, Nathan Smith, Dean McMahon, Troy Ryan, Hayden Allum and Kate Allum for helping in weekly training. Tait was a great help as Director of Sports always on my back to keep me focused. Lucky to have Greg Pierce and Nathan Smith for setting the seasons structure from gym programme set by Jock Campbell to the bay, the river and surf and all the training. Behind the scenes all the helpers Ken Smith, Izaak Smith, Kurtis Smith, Dean McMahon, Troy Ryan, Greg Allum, Brett Taper, Scott Allen towing of

trailers and putting up tents. I would like to thank JD, Carol Woods, Charlie and Donna Brown for all entries and organising teams and all administration. Happy Paddling

March Past Report The March Past season was a little disjointed this year with key people missing through various other commitments.

We had to rely on club people to fill in for us throughout the year so the first thanks go to Gordon McKirdy from the R & R, for releasing Katie Spinner, Col Jones, Karin Jones, and Emily Caterson. Others from the club who ably assisted were Lucy Furniss and our international star Rika Takeuchi. The lead up carnivals we competed in before the Aussies were North Cronulla, Manly, Coogee, Maroubra (Branch) & Wanda followed by the NSW State Championships. We also represented Wanda at the Randwick Race day, which was a dedicated event to highlight the Surf Life Saving NSW. The girls at first were told due to the OH&S that they were to wear their shoes. So here they were all, in their high heels and cossies, standing on the home straight. Luckily the team has some great negotiators and were able to march down the home straight in barefoot avoiding the horse manure. After the March the generosity of the SLSC movement gave them all a sausage on a bun to reflect on a great day.

56

The team selected for the Aussies was:

some inspirational words before we marched.

Standard bearer Anita Pryke, belt Kate Mountain, reel party Yvonne Holland, Paula Cox, Margaret Ryall and Gyliane Ware, pivots Donna Mackey and Jeanie Gunn, backline Jann Townsend, Narelle Hunt, Maree Ovens and Marilyn Georgaris. This was the first time we had all the team together so we made the most of it with 5 long practice sessions. The improvement was immense and we finished a respectful 12th on a count back. The pleasing thing for us all was the fact that we only gave away 4 points, our average leading up to this event was well into the teens.

Wanda March Past team can be proud of their season on and off the sand. They have done everything asked of them and more by the club, and set a high standard for all other sections to follow. Lastly the new uniforms designed by Jann Townsend and the newly painted reel by Brian Cowan and Peter Cox are fantastic and received a lot a accolades from all other competitors and spectators at the Aussies. A special mention must also go to Narelle Hunt who organised a great post Aussies event at Maroochydore this year.

Brian Cowan from North Cronulla was our Technical Coach and has made a huge difference to the team and he is highly respected by the team and management. He attended most training sessions and his commitment and encouragement is second to none. Peter Cox and Ross Hunt continued to support the team doing all the hard yards carrying the reel an estimated 20 plus kms this year. They also assisted Tony Holland the coach at training. We also had Glenn Bell on hand for

As always we had a fun year and look forward to a new season. If there is anyone at the club who is interested in joining our group and have an afternoon spare for training and can commit to about half a dozen carnivals through the year please don’t be shy. Come and make yourself known to Tony Holland. You’ll usually find him holding court with the girls most Sunday afternoons at the club.

Tony Holland

2015 44th Sutherland 2 Surf Dual Olympian and Commonwealth Games Track and Field Athlete Jane Flemming fired the starting gun at 8am to send 7,000 runners and walkers along their way for the 44th PAYCE-Brooks Sutherland 2 Surf.

Our numbers were down slightly this year. Probably due to the cold and wet conditions in the lead up to the day. As well as a big increase in the number of these type of events starting up around Sydney. But the day itself, although showery and cold earlier turned out great. Canberra runner Jordan Gusman zipped over the 11km course in 33minutes 03seconds to win the men’s division. Hometown hero Eloise Wellings was the first female across the line in 36minutes 24seconds. Eloise is representing Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. Australia’s former Marathon champion and Olympian Steve Moneghetti ran in our event for the first time and finished 10th in 35minutes 02seconds. Steve along with Andrew Lloyd at the presentation awarded the Andrew Lloyd trophy and $1000 prize money to Jordan and the Kerryn McCann trophy and $1000 to Eloise. For the third year in a row Ali Najeem was the first Wanda club member home. Again Anne Caterson did a mammoth job in liaising and co-ordinating with the Police, SES, RTA, Council and Ambulance

services. Along with organising the workforce for road closures, first aid and the many other tasks that need doing. Again Trevor Elliott looked after the Finance. David Gittius and Tait Brannock organised the finish line while Nathan Spinner looked after the start line. Due to the huge expenses the Sutherland 2 Surf would not be possible without the generosity of our many sponsors. Thankyou to everyone for helping to make the 44th S2S another great day.

Pool Rescue Report The 2015 Pool Rescue season was one of promise for the future. With a large increase in the numbers of the group from Nippers age groups the section is building for some big results over the next few years.

BLAKE

U12 & U13

U13 GIRLS

The group trained hard through the winter months in the cold and the results show what a bit of commitment can produce. Individual swimmers had some great personal bests, or attempted new events for the first time in a major carnival. The club placed an impressive 5th at the State Championships, and 25th at the Australian Championships. From these carnivals both Nathan Clarke and Brittany Stoker were selected in the NSW Development Team that travelled to New Zealand and representing themselves, the club and the state exceptionally well. Brittany was also selected in

58

the NSW Interstate Team, the only member in the club this year in the surf or pool. Great work guys and keep it up! The season could not have taken place if it wasn’t for the support from the parent group, transporting to and encouraging their kids in this form of lifesaving. I would always encourage more and more athletes to get involved in Pool Rescue this coming winter. The club is so strong in the surf when it comes to swimming, so we should really be a powerhouse when it comes to the pool. As a club, we will be targeting the preparation for the World Championships in Adelaide 2018, and that starts now! Last time we did this we won, and I believe the group coming up is better than the last.

U15

Let’s get in the pool, have a go, and aim to be the best U18 club in the world again!

IRB SECTION Report Even though the IRBs cover Nipper, Senior and ancillary commitments we always try to work as one blended unit.

1

2

THANKYOU A huge thankyou to all of our Wanda IRB drivers and crew for your dedication and professionalism that made the 15/16 season such a great success.

WHAT DID WE DO This season saw us patrol, protect, support and participate from Bate Bay to the Sunshine Coast. Our patrol drivers and crew were available every patrol which enabled our Patrol Captains to always successfully sign on to Surf Com with “IRB available”. Our IRBs were involved in a number of rescues and their presence gave confidence to the public utilizing Wanda beach that they were being protected by skilled Lifesavers. There were a number of ancillary events that required the presence of our IRB. From sponsored swims to scattering of ashes. On all occasions we were able to meet our support commitments. And lastly there were the Carnival duties where we were required to provide IRBs in sometimes fairly difficult conditions. Not once did we falter in delivering.

3

HOW DID WE DO IT

We started the season with our new digs established. There was some great team effort put in to the refurbishment of the IRB shed. The extended footprint of the shed, coupled with some extremely functional features allowed us to prepare and be prepared for whatever was asked of us. This functionality was very evident during the carnival we hosted which saw IRBs regularly overturning and being able to be rotated out in quick time allowing the carnival to flow until the tricky surf conditions finally cancelled the event. The IRB commitments often required a number of our people to participate for extended periods of time. Negotiating the swells was often challenging and the knowledge and skill displayed by our Drivers and Crew often drew creditable comment from external parties. We didn’t always come out unscathed though. There were a few cuts and bruises sustained and the occasional broken bone. And we weren’t even racing, yet. Still, the commitment to do our best for our club always came to the fore and our IRB people always delivered.

4

WHERE TO FROM HERE

5

WRAP UP

We now have a good nucleus of IRB drivers and crew. Our IRB trainers are coordinating a training program which we hope to see produce even more drivers and crew during the off season. We are hopeful of reinstating an IRB racing team and have a dedicated new outboard ready to help the first racing team to achieve their best. We have a plan to maintain reliability in our equipment and a competent group to achieve this.

Well done and once again a huge thankyou to all of you Wanda IRB people. Also thankyou to all of those that have supported the IRB section. Knowing your there helps us to achieve. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining our elite crews and encourage you to come and join us in the warmth of the shed in the off season to talk about how you can get started. Yours in rubber boats

swim captain's Report Well what a massive year it has been not only for the members but also the club itself. Developing each year and going from strength to strength as a club, it is great to see and also exciting to see what the future holds. As a competitor and having the view of a sectional captain I can confidently say that this year was by far the highest display of club spirit at local, state and national competition and it has been an honour to be a part of the whole experience.

This year I was glad to see so many competitors putting their hands up to have a go and give it their best. With the introduction of Sunday belt and tube training I saw many faces. Some hungover and others way too energetic, but all still attending and willing to learn new skills and further develop them as the weeks went on. As the season progressed, the efforts from everyone at training clearly stood out and this was shown by well-deserved results. We had some great improvements from last season and I hope to see that develop with the years to come. From our opens to U15 athletes on the beach everyone was there and willing to provide guidance when necessary. A big congratulations to John Woods for his 2nd place at both Aussies and State in the open men’s belt

60

and Danielle McMahon and Elyssa Pierce. Both ladies made the open women belt final at Aussies to place 3rd and 4th respectively. It was a not only a massive effort from Elyssa to make the final in what was her first time racing this event, but another first time competitor in her younger sister Britney accomplished this task in the U17 female belt event. Also a special mention to the U14 and U15 girls who impressed everyone with their efforts and results this season. We had many swimmers who made both individual and team finals which was great to see. With a focus on consistency and eliminating slight mistakes next season, we will see many of our athletes progress to that next level in competitive racing. My thank you list in my first year as swim captain would be indefinite. But major contributions from Dean

McMahon in assisting with belt teams, Ken Smith and Tait Brannock for assisting with direction for both present and future swimmers and also Gordon McKirdy who guided me into this position, something I will always be grateful for. Without the guidance of the more experienced club members, and the input of other coaches, this job would be even more challenging than originally perceived. All in all it has been an awesome year for the club. In saying that, I look forward to coming back again next season to watch the Wanda squad grow in size from nippers to seniors and become a better club as a whole in the years to come. WANDA BIG DOGS established 2016!!

Ladies Auxiliary Report The ladies auxiliary have catered for many events this year such as the Annual General Meeting, the Police lunches for the Sutherland to Surf, the boat launch for Jamie Walker (the weather was very kind to us that day), the Interclub Carnival and the Wanda Carnival.

For presentation night we sponsored the 100% patrol attendance awards of which this year there were 17 recipients. Well done. Our Christmas night out was enjoyable. Good food, good company and we loved those little chocolate bags, so cute, thanks to Merilyn. Thank you to all the ladies for your support and friendship throughout the season. I have enjoyed your company. I would like to convey my special appreciation to Sue Backhouse for her work as Secretary. For all the emails and the SMS‘s and organising our meetings and

ValeS Ken Dawes Ken Dawes, one of Wanda’s foundation members. Ken was at the inaugural Annual General Meeting on 1st October 1946 and was Wanda’s first gear steward in 1947. Ken was a senior active member of Wanda until he moved to Tweed Heads. Ken was 91 years of age and was in good health until his passing. His daughter, Çharmaine, advised that Ken attributed his good health to the time he spent as a lifesaver at Wanda. His daughter advised that Ken was a very proud member of Wanda.

Owen Coulter It is with much sadness that the President and Directors of Wanda SLSC report the passing of respected Life Member Owen Coulter. He was 85 years of age. Owen joined Wanda SLSC in the 1950s and quickly became respected for his personable manner, his intellect, and his organisational skills. Owen was one of nature’s gentlemen and a true friend of all who knew him. Owen accepted many roles at Wanda SLSC including Deputy President and, over the years, was a valued member of important subcommittees such as the Building Committee, Finance Committee, House Committee, and the Ways and Means Committee. Significant advances occurred within the Club during the time of Owen’s active involvement. For this and other contributions Owen was elected as a Life Member of Wanda SLSC in the 1980/1981 season. Owen’s contribution extended beyond our club where he fulfilled major roles supporting another late life member Bill Stafford in the joint conduct of major Championships on the Bate Bay beaches. Owen was also a regular participant and significant contributor to the Cronulla Polar Bears and later the Gunnamatta Greys Winter Swimming Clubs. Unfortunately Owen left us in some ways a few years ago with Alzheimers Disease but his now physical absence leaves a void for all of us. To Owen’s widow Joan and to their children Greg, Michelle and Grant the Club extends it sincere condolences.”

David (Barry) Fairfax-Jones Service 1950 Joined as junior member 1950-51 DONALD HUDSON

Donald Hudson 1927- 2016 Donald Hudson joined Wanda SLSC in 1975. Don was awarded the 50 year service medal for his contribution to Surf Lifesaving and was also made a Life Member of Wanda JAG in 2010. Don was a wonderful member of the club. He gave so much of his time teaching our members and members of the other Bate Bay clubs to surf swim, wade and to love the surf. So many of our swimmers were taught by Don but he also touched the lives of so many others. Until Don became unwell, he was a regular fixture on a chair outside the board shed, watching the surf, having a chat and generally just loving being a part of Wanda. Wanda was fortunate to have Donald Hudson as one its members. We will miss you Don and thank you for your contribution to our club and its members. May you rest in peace.

David (Barry) Fairfax-Jones David passed away on Monday 25th April 2016. There was a service held on the Sunshine Coast Queensland, where David lived. A service was also held in Shellharbour NSW. Both places were where David served as a pastor as well as joining the local surf clubs. As can be seen below, David served our club Wanda well; as an officer, competitor and as a great member. The highlight of David’s career at Wanda was being a member our first open boat surf boat crew to win an Australian title at Burnie, Tasmania during the 1961-62 season. As requested by David’s wife Yvonne and family they commemorated and celebrated David’s life back at the club where it all started in 1951 – Wanda. A surfboat took the journey to sea one last time in honour of David on Sunday 15th May 2016.
