THE RISING CONTINENT Programme

MindField is the spoken word arena at Electric Picnic. We’re back with a stimulating spark-filled programme designed to entertain, inform and inflame!

MindField is an initiative of

MINDFIELD: OUT OF AFRICA Electric Picnic’s MindField arena once again takes its place among the ancient trees on the lawn of Stradbally Hall with a massive programme of challenging debate, inspiring poetry, literature and theatre, mind-boggling science, more than a cúpla focail as Gaeilge and much more, all complemented by the feast for the senses that is the Theatre of Food.

Highlights Africa: The Rising Continent is the theme of this year’s programme, the centrepiece of which is Fergal Keane Talks Africa - a series of interactive debates about the past, present and future of the continent and its people - hosted by the acclaimed author and BBC journalist and a diverse panel of experts in economics, technology, development and the arts from Africa and Europe. The Leviathan debates, hosted by economist and author David McWilliams, respond to the threats to human rights defenders in Africa and beyond and explore how surveillance technologies have become the new weapons of war. The expert panels, which includes The Centre for Irish and European Security (CIES), will also take a long hard look at our fetish for technological solutions to societal problems and ask whether smart cities will create smart societies. Technology’s positive potential is also explored with two new elements to MindField: CoderDojo: the open source, global movement of free computer coding clubs for young people sets up shop and Kevin Godley, of pioneering music video duo Godley and Crème, will demonstrate his groundbreaking musical platform WholeWorldBand with live performances from Rodney Orpheus and Nigerian-Irish rapper, Simi Crowns.

In the afternoons, the provocative History Ireland Hedge School returns to ask was World War I a Great War or a good war and, with a neat hucklebuck, looks into showbands, beat bands & ballads: youth culture of the ‘60s. As Sunday morning breaks through, Miriam O’Callaghan will host the riotous assembly that is the Electric Picnic Brunch with comedians, journalists and performers from among the tired and emotional of Stradbally’s fields. More chat without the chit returns with the fun “speed-debating” of Salon du Chat. The Science Gallery Stage will have Ignite Electric Picnic: High-energy five-minute talks, guaranteed to amaze, inspire, upheave and amuse; Scientific Sue: A science show for all ages that looks at weird weather and crazy climate.; Futureproof Live: Newstalk’s weekly science show with Jonathan McCrea will return for an almost-live festival edition and a jam-packed programme of workshops and demos, inspired by Science Gallery’s current exhibition, STRANGE WEATHER. The Word Stage, hosted by the inimitable Marty Mulligan from Mullingar features a wealth of poetry, slam and musical talent including: The Brownbread Mixtape, Dublin’s Underground Beat, Cúirt Literary Festival Showcase, The Monday Echo, Milk and Cookies, The Whitehouse Poets, Lingo Spoken Word Festival Showcase,

Storymap, Come Here to me, Olaf Tyaransen, The Mary Coughlan Band, Ka Tet, Ska’s Good Gravy, Cronin, Mojo Gogo, Sinead White, David Donoghue and Clive Barnes as well as many others. The Theatre Stage programmed by Dublin Theatre Festival’s Willie White, presents a series of festival-fit performances from some of Ireland’s most exciting artists including productions from Opera Theatre Company, performing opera from the movies; Gúna Nua, Dylan Coburn Gray, ANU Productions, Emmet Kirwan (Sarah and Steve) and Ian Lloyd Anderson (Love/ Hate) and Devious Theatre Company. An Puball Gaeilge has its biggest ever programme of wild Irish language events including Hector Ó hEochagáin hosting 70s porn karaoke; Rónán Mac Aodh Bhuí’s Caiberet Craiceáilte; Manchán Magan and Aindrias de Staic; as well as music, poetry, theatre debate, burlesque, standup comedy and food – all in the medium of ár teanga náisiúnta. In association with Glór na nGael.

The original heart and soul of the MindField arena, the Leviathan tent hosts a series of inspiring, provocative debates hosted by Fergal Keane, David McWilliams and Miriam O’Callaghan as well as the conversational smorgasbord of Salon du Chat and political junk punk cabaret from White Cholera. Fergal Keane Talks Africa - a series of interactive debates about the past, present and future of the continent and its people - hosted by the acclaimed author and BBC journalist and a diverse panel of experts in economics, technology, development and the arts from Africa and Europe. Devious Theatre: Some Flood

Petty Cash: Coming Up

The doomsday prophecies were right. Good thing Noah had stocked up on tinned goods. The wrong man to survive the apocalypse is the only man left in Ireland. Watch him stagger and fumble through a global catastrophe, while attempting to deal with conspiracy and paranoia at a personal level. As he struggles with his own isolation, delusion and neurosis he attempts to define the great pandemic surrounding him. And any other phenomena that he happens to think of. Noah is a danger unto himself. With no one left to help him, what chance does he have? 1.30pm

Just the Lads: Handle With Care

Handle With Care invites people to brave the mites and dust of their attics or under their beds in search of letters old and new. People gather, envelopes are opened, and letters of all shapes and sizes are read and shared with an intimate audience. The real premise of the evening lies in the act of translation, as a group comes together to transform the intimacy of written word into spoken word performances. With such varied subject matter, Handle With Care is reshaping the penned language of letters into catharsis and comedy. 3pm

Dublin Old School

Two brothers. Jason, an unemployed DJ/ slacker and Daniel, an educated, homeless heroin addict. They haven’t seen or spoken to each other in 3 years. Jason stumbles from one misguided misadventure to another in Dublin. One night he finds his estranged brother on the street. Over the summer they reconnect. Two lost, fractured souls, giving each other advice, but rarely taking it. Debating different views of their past, their present, their city, and a dance music scene that led to Daniel’s addiction and gives Jason his only creative outlet. A new, dark comedy from the writer of Sarah and Steve. 4.30pm

ANU Productions: Porous

2013’s vulnerable workers aren’t necessarily unskilled labourers. Downsizing, out sourcing and liquidations affect a wide variety of people. If you had a chance to help someone protest against their treatment, would you stand with them?

Our heads are heavy, our hearts are hungry. We need to work through some stuff. We’re calling for an expulsion. An exercise in freedom. We’re in a head on collision with the fragmenting effects of the human experience. All that isolates the individual from the whole. We’re done with that now. Whip out your freak flag and join us in an immersive celebration through spoken word. Featuring Niamh Beirne, Oisin McKenna, Vickey Curtis and Andy Apples.

Opera Theatre Company: Opera as heard in the Movies

You know the feeling. You’re watching a movie and suddenly the soundtrack melts your mind but you can never remember the song! Here’s your chance to relive that mind-bending experience! Just close your eyes sit back and wait for Opera Theatre Company’s singers to transport you to the cinema watching the Godfather, where the stark brutality unfolds to Puccini’s sublime Brindisi. Or relive the moment in Shawshank Redemption where Tom Robbins treats his fellow prisoners to Mozart’s divine duet “Sull’aria”. And that’s not all, renowned Irish singers soprano Mary O’Sullivan, mezzo-soprano Anne Marie Gibbons, baritone John Molloy, tenor Aaron Cawley along with musical director Andrew Synnott will bring you superb renditions of other classic opera arias and famous ensembles.

The Cup Theatre Company: A PICTURE OF US: A (sort of) MUSICAL

Ordinarily, the best thing to do would be to start at the beginning. But then, there’s nothing ordinary about Lennon and Nora - the protagonists at the centre of ‘A PICTURE OF US: A (sort of) MUSICAL’ and this is not a love story... This is a story about love. ‘A PICTURE OF US: A (sort of) MUSICAL’ takes a look inside a fractured relationship, told on a broken timeline using original music. 4.30pm

Cronin

Brian Fleming will showcase excerpts from ‘A Sacrilegious Lesbian and Homosexual Parade,’ his upcoming show. He will also feature some highlights from his two sell-out shows from the Dublin Fringe Festival. ‘Gis a Shot of Your Bongos Mister’ (2011) and ‘Have Yis No Homes To Go To’ (2013) which tell stories from real-life experiences in Dublin, Senegal and Rwanda. Both shows, directed by Raymond Keane (Barabbas), enjoyed critical success in Ireland and New York. The performances use stand-up, projection, live and recorded music, passable circus, bad dance, poor striptease, and whatever else is required, to take us on the journey with him.

“a fun, freewheeling atmosphere featuring a blend of Scrap Saturday-style comedy sketches, poetry and music” – The Irish Times

Cronin is the new musical project from Irish brothers Jonathon and Michael Cronin. Leaving Ireland in the last recession in the early nineties to live in the North of England shaped their musical influences, style and aspirations. Since returning to Ireland 10 years ago they have set up their own recording studio, released acclaimed singles and albums under the moniker The Aftermath, featured music on two major motion pictures amongst other things.

the brownbread mixtape is a raucous, fun monthly show in The Stag’s Head pub in Dublin. Each brownbread mixtape show has a theme. The best contemporary Irish spoken word performers and lyrical musicians are invited to perform. They do a performance related to the theme. Resident sketch comedians perform hilarious original comedy on the theme. Everyone has bucketloads of fun. Simple as that. The highly acclaimed show is hosted and run by resident MC & popular performance poet Kalle Ryan.

Literary Stage The Literary Tent (as supported by The Arts Council) has fast become a beacon of fascination for Picnickers drawn to Stradbally’s very own Latin Quarter: the MindField Arena. This year’s line-up promises yet another charismatic mix of interviews with ground-breaking contemporary authors, not to mention some deep discussion of classic literature beautifully complemented by live music performances. Known for its pairings, the Literary Tent has some remarkably fresh alliances this year, from the effortlessly eloquent and fantastical Will Self and Carlo Gébler, to the actor Aidan Gillen and Peter Murphy on Joyce’s ‘The Dead’. We also have some inspired trios, merging together to form a medley of voices that will chime and resonate far beyond our little MindField nook. Will Self’s 2012 novel, Umbrella, received unprecedented acclaim on its release (many felt it should have won that year’s Man Booker Prize), and is considered Self’s masterwork. The follow-up, Shark, has just been released, and continues Self’s exploration of the complex relationship between human psychopathology and our technological progress. He will be in conversation with Carlo Gébler, whose intensely moving memoir, Father & I (about his relationship with his father, Ernest Gébler, and his mother, Edna O’Brien), is a classic of its kind. Julian Cope may be better known as a post-punk revolutionary but he has also just published his debut novel, One Three One. The ex-Teardrop Explodes frontman and world authority on Neolithic culture will be in conversation with Faber’s creative director, Lee Brackstone, the publisher responsible for (among numerous other volumes) Beck’s wonderfully innovative Song Reader. Eimear McBride, author of one of the most garlanded books of recent years, A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing, will read alongside Paul Kingsnorth, whose own crowdfunded novel The Wake has been longlisted for this year’s Man Booker Prize. Both authors have pushed at the boundaries of language with their challenging works: McBride with her stream-of-consciousness interior monologue that reinvents modernism; Kingsnorth with his ‘shadow-tongue’, a language ‘intended to convey the feeling’ of Old English through borrowed vocabulary and syntax. This June, McBride was one of fifteen authors chosen to re-imagine one of Joyce’s stories for the inspired (and inspirational) volume, Dubliners 100, a magnificent homage in itself to the master’s consummate collection in this, its centenary year. Peter Murphy will deliver (as only he can!) his ‘cover version’ of ‘The Dead’, preceded by the actor Aidan Gillen who’ll read extracts from Joyce’s famed original, considered by many to be the greatest short story of the twentieth century. In what promises to be spine-tinglingly special, the singersongwriter Lisa O’Neill will reprise ‘The Lass of Aughrim’, a ballad sung to such remarkable effect by Frank Patterson in the film version of Joyce’s masterpiece. Keeping with the short story genre, we have two of Ireland’s best practitioners of the form: Donal Ryan (whose Spinning Heart has become a contemporary classic) and Colin Barrett (winner of the lucrative Frank O’Connor Award, and whose debut collection Young Skins has just been nominated for the Guardian First Fiction Prize). Joining Donal and Colin will be a very special musical guest. Words and music go hand in hand for most Picnickers, and the Literary Tent has earned a reputation for matchmaking authors with musicians to create some of the most magical moments of the festival. Perennial favourite, Roddy Doyle, returns to the Literary Tent this year to read from his classic novel The Commitments. Joining him will be members of the legendary punk outfit, The Radiators from Space (aka Trouble Pilgrims), playing such favourites as Under Clery’s Clock and Kitty Ricketts, both penned by the late and much lamented, Philip Chevron: sometime Pogue and all-time gent. Armagh-born poet, Paul Muldoon (described by the Times Literary Supplement as ‘the most significant English-language poet born since the Second World War), will join forces with our most esteemed native language poet, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, and The Gloaming’s Iarla Ó Lionáird, a peerless practitioner of the Sean-nós tradition. Joining us from the US will be celebrated novelist, Amy Bloom, a National Book Award nominee and longlistee for the equally prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award. Her latest novel, Lucky Us, considered ‘an exquisitely imagined novel’ by no less than Oprah Winfrey’s O magazine, is already a bestseller in the US, and has just been released in the UK and Ireland. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Brendan Behan, and we’ll be making our own salute to his passing and legacy, with, among others, filmmaker Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) and the actor Peter Coonan (Fran in Love/Hate, and the young Behan in the Gaiety’s forthcoming production of Borstal Boy). Joining Jim and Peter will be a very special guest. Moderating the weekend’s events will be Edel Coffey (The Irish Independent), Sinéad Gleeson (arts correspondent for The Irish Times and a regular contributor to RTÉ’s arts programme, The Works), and Colm O’Regan (Isn’t It Well For Ye? The Book of Irish Mammies). Electric Picnic’s Literary Tent is once again curated by Raymond Bell, editor of Possessed of a Past: A John Banville Reader and the forthcoming twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Banville’s Booker-shortlisted novel, The Book of Evidence (Picador Classic).

The Gourmand of Food Festivals – Theatre of Food at Electric Picnic

Now in its fourth year, the Theatre of Food returns with its best ever line-up gathering of chefs, writers, thinkers, artisans, brewers, bakers, and food heroes. It’s a celebration of everything we love about food and drink – and music. The Theatre of Food takes place in a magnificent tent, pitched in the Mindfield area of Electric Picnic, this year, with its own country market.

Amnesty Hour at Leviathan From Gaza to Guantanamo: How justifying the unjustifiable fuels human rights abuses. This month Barack Obama finally acknowledged that the CIA ‘tortured some folks’ in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. At the same time we are listening to attempts to justify the mass bombing of homes, schools, and hospitals in Gaza as acts of selfdefence. At Amnesty Hour at Leviathan Audrey Carville, Presenter of RTÉ’s Late Debate, will lead a challenging discussion on how attempts to justify the unjustifiable are fuelling human rights abuses around the world. Panellists will include Shona Murray, Newstalk Journalist recently returned from reporting in Gaza, and Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland. The audience will be encouraged to actively engage in the discussion.

6.30pm, Friday, Leviathan Stage.
