INTRODUCING NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

INTRODUCTION 02 Issue 2024 | humberguides.co.uk

We are home to the largest port complex in the UK, and shipping remains incredibly important to North East Lincolnshire. In recent years the emergence of renewable energy has also seen this area pivoted to the heart of this burgeoning green sector.

Complementing the port industry is the hive of food processing industries and cold storage warehousing available within a 10 minute drive of our ports. Did you know, for example, that across Grimsby and the wider Humber region there are 6,000 people directly employed in more than 50 approved seafood processing units. In monetary terms, the sector is worth more than £1.5bn to our region.

With easy access to the southern North Sea, Grimsby is also home to the long-term maintenance and operations for many of the windfarms based there. Some of the most reputable companies in the world, such as Orsted, have brought significant investment into North East Lincolnshire.

Work continues to regenerate the heart of Grimsby. Residents and visitors can now enjoy a transformed St James’ Square, where work has also started on the E-Factor Group’s new Business Hub in St James’ House.

The council has now owns Freshney Place, Lincolnshire’s largest covered shopping centre, for just over a year and our plans to create a vibrant multi-use centre in the heart of Grimsby are going well. Work is starting on the redevelopment of the venue’s western end supported by a £20m Government LUF grant. And there’s plans for a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) within the centre. All of these developments will help to attract more people into our town for all sorts of different reasons – adding to its sustainability and vibrancy.

In Cleethorpes there is great news too. After another busy summer season ends, we look to the future and the very best way to invest £18.4m of awarded LUF monies to transform key areas within this popular resort.

Meanwhile at the other end of Freshney Place, there’s the remodelled Garth Lane area sitting next to Western Haven Mills where the Onside Horizon Youth Zone is being developed. Just across the River Freshney, work will be completed soon on the redesigned public events and community space at Riverhead Square.

Why not be part of our story, and join us in our exciting future?

‘THE PLACE TO DO BUSINESS’

However you find yourself here, whether for a short business stay, a holiday or looking to work here permanently, we are pleased to welcome you to ‘our place’, North East Lincolnshire, an area we are immensely proud to represent in our role as the local Chamber of Commerce. We hope this excellent Guide will give you a good insight into the businesses we are proud to work alongside.

You are in an area of intense ambition with innovation abounding, all with an eye to the future. Nowhere in the UK is more being done to help our planet’s needs. You are currently sat in the UK home of decarbonisation. The Humber is an area on a mission for a net zero future. Low carbon hydrogen and captured carbon emissions will help create the world’s first net zero industrial region by 2040. This amazing goal will be great for our people looking as it does to create up to 50,000 jobs and supporting skills and educational opportunities across the board.

However, our geography has encouraged many different sectors, industries and drivers. Much of our industrial strength lies in our associations with the wider Humber area and the blue economy but if our economic head and driver is the Humber then our cultural and historic heart remains in a rural and agricultural Lincolnshire. Links continue to grow with educational partners, not only through our excellent FE College Grimsby Institute but with both Hull and Lincoln Universities. Whilst politicians debate, boundaries change and funding streams alter business quietly gets on with what it knows best, manufacture and delivery. Business knows no boundaries.

The seafood industry is immensely important to N E Lincolnshire and here again innovation is currently riding high. As well as home to the UK’s largest fish market contributing to the £784 billion that fishing brings to UK GDP, we hope to shortly witness the building of a £100 salmon farming facility on a 29 acre site in Grimsby, ensuring our seafaring and fishing heritage continues to evolve.

Of course much of our current Estuary activity centres round the deep sea Port complex of Immingham operated by ABP, a 24/7 operation, which has seen huge investment over recent years. Immingham handles 46 million tonnes of cargo every year. Together with Goole, Hull and Grimsby, ABP’s other Humber ports, it

provides a gigantic portal connecting the UK with business throughout Europe and beyond. We are less than 24 hours from a European market of 170 million people. Mind boggling I’m sure you’ll agree! As is the fact that Humber Ports handle over £75 billion of trade per year!

We have fantastic transport infrastructure road and rail links and see 240 rail freight movements per week through Immingham. Our Airport, Humberside Airport, is only 20 minutes drive away from Immingham and Grimsby. You’ll also find a helicopter base on site servicing the offshore industry.

Of course North East Lincolnshire is also home to many industries in chemical, pharmaceutical and allied industries. Indeed we are at the centre of a major concentration of process industries which in the wider region employ around 20,000 people in 400 companies.

There is no doubt that we live in unprecedented and challenging times. A global pandemic, increased fuel prices and a global energy crisis, have led to crises in confidence and nervousness in trading not seen since the 1970’s. The Chamber has been working with local businesses for over a century through thick and thin and we continue to be proud to do the work we do to help keep the cogs of business turning and ensuring our local businesses get the representation and help they deserve. We’re particularly proud of our work in international trade.

In North East Lincolnshire we are based in the ABP Port Office on Grimsby Docks. The iconic Dock Tower is our ‘go to’ view out of the window. Just wonderful – even on grey days! Also out of the window we can see that Grimsby Docks is experiencing a huge renaissance with the old ‘Kasbah’ area of the docks being regenerated and attracting many cultural and arts businesses to operate there. This is actually just one small part of our huge Town Centre regeneration which will see a

refreshed area emerge with a huge amount of regeneration work currently taking place in Grimsby Top Town.

The Visitor Economy is vitally important to us, generating in normal times around £0.5-billion per annum to the economy. Cleethorpes is an iconic Victorian seaside resort. Sympathetic heritage regeneration work utilising £18.4 million of Levelling Up grant monies is currently underway. Keep an eye on www.discovernel. co.uk to find out what’s happening in this neck of the woods.

We hope to become your ‘go to’ destination. We certainly hope you will enjoy doing business here.

Please read on through this Guide and find out more about this special place of ours and its businesses. Happy reading!

PAST TO PRESENT

GREAT GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES

Famous landmarks and rich history characterise Grimsby. A Danish fisherman called Grim made these shores his home in the 9th Century AD, beginning centuries of prosperity and growth.

Grimsby stood on a natural harbour called the Haven, sheltering ships from the Humber and the tempers of the North Sea. During the 12th century it developed into a major trading port. Ships brought timber from Norway and wine from Spain and France. Wool was exported and coal was brought along the coast from Newcastle. At one point, it ranked 12th in importance to the Crown in terms of tax revenue.

The gradual silting of the Haven presented many challenges and eventually brought about serious decline to the port.

Pioneering engineering allowed for the creation of Grimsby’s first dock with the opening of the Haven Dock in 1801. Major developments in marine civil engineering continued to be advanced, culminating in HRH Prince Albert laying the foundation stone of Grimsby’s new dock in 1849. Built for the Royal Navy’s largest ships, the new Royal Dock was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1854.

Grimsby’s landmark Dock Tower, its design inspired by Palazzo Publico in Siena Italy, stands between the entrance locks of the Royal Dock and powered the world’s first hydraulically

operated lock gates. Built in 1851, it held 30,000 gallons of water to provide power to the lock gates and cranes on the docks. Advances in hydraulic technology soon made the tower redundant, but it remains as a monument to the entrepreneurial spirit of past Grimbarians.

Cleethorpes was originally made up of three small communities, Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe. Cleethorpes was a small fishing village until the 1920s when it began to entice visitors to the sea bathing and the theoretical health benefits of the medicinal waters, transforming into a key holiday resort when the railway arrived in the area in the 1940s.

The population of Cleethorpes in 1831 was under 500 residents, this figure has risen dramatically and now plays host to around 30,000 people.

Purpose built attractions such as Ross Castle and Cleethorpes Pier were funded by Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company as tourist attractions which are still popular today. The promenade and town continues to be an attraction with its vibrant seaside lifestyle.

IMMINGHAM

Immingham is a major business location with the UK’s largest port and a unique history.

Well known for the industrial sites around the port, the town is a busy logistics hub, a centre for the process industries and a growing focal point for renewable energy companies.

The international significance of Immingham can be traced back more than 400 years. It was the last departure point for the Pilgrim Separatists who fled England for Holland in 1608. These families then sailed on the Mayflower to America in search of a new life.

With thousands of tonnes being imported and exported throughout Immingham each day the town has a special place in the success of global industries ranging from automation through to energy.

The Great Central Railway Company decided to open a neighbouring dock to Grimsby in 1912 as the deep water channel to the river made it accessible for many types of vessels.

The new docks meant that there needed to be an easy link between the towns, therefore the opening of the dock by King George V, known then, as the Kings Dock went alongside the arrival of the electric railway running to Grimsby from Immingham. This train line encouraged workers to move into the area and this led to the further development of the community.

During WW1, the area was used as a submarine base and the war caused Immingham to suffer economically but it began to pick up again when the docks were

The dock is now over 100 years old and the

ASSOCIATED BRITISH PORTS VLS PILOT, DAVE HUNTER, CELEBRATES 47 YEARS’ SERVICE ON THE HUMBER ESTUARY

Associated British Ports (ABP), Dave Hunter, celebrates 47 years as a Humber Pilot. One of his final acts of pilotage, ahead of his retirement as a VLS (very large ships) pilot, took place earlier this month, as he brought the MV Propel Grace onto its berth at the Humber International Terminal on the Port of Immingham.

Dave had originally wanted to become a draughtsman or architect when he was younger. As he was preparing to leave school, he spotted an article in a careers magazine about becoming a River Pilot, which sparked his interest in what would be an incredible career.

Dave said: “The job really jumped out at me.

I had never heard of a River Pilot, and it sounded really good, so I made some enquiries. I had never been to sea, neither had my father, but later I discovered that my great, great, great, great grandfather had been a pilot on the Tyne. I was able to start an apprenticeship in 1964 and haven’t looked back since.”

Following time on the water and working

through the necessary experience and qualifications, Dave became a Class 1 Humber Pilot in 1980, and 12 years later he qualified as a VLS Pilot.

David said: “I have loved working with the very large ships (40,000 tonnes). Being a Humber Pilot has been a wonderful career. Without doubt the Humber Estuary is one of the hardest to navigate in the UK, but the

feeling that you get from completing a job really well is like no other. It is a challenging job, but when everything goes right you feel ten foot high.”

Looking back across his 47 years Dave reckons he has completed around 200 vessel movements per year, and he has enjoyed every one of them.

The Humber Estuary is the largest harbour district in the UK and the Humber Pilotage Area stretches from the Spurn Light Float through the Humber Estuary up the River Ouse to Goole and up the river Trent to Gainsborough.

Dave added: “Over the years I have worked with 100’s of apprentices and trainees. There is a lot of support for those working towards becoming a Humber Pilot, it is a great community in which I have made lifelong friends.”

Across 2022 there were in excess of 15,000 acts of Pilotage undertaken by ABP’s 100 strong team of Pilots aided by several towage companies working on the Humber. Towage and marine services company, Svitzer, who aided the MV Propel Grace, turned their water jets on to honour Dave’s last VLS movement.

Simon Bird, Director Humber, said: “I would like to personally thank Dave for his incredible service to the Humber. Dave, and Marine Pilots here and around the world, carry out a vital service that supports our everyday lives.

Thanks to the considerable experience and expertise of Marine Pilots, we can all access the commodities to build our homes, keep our lights and heating on, stock our retail sector and bring in medicines for our hospitals and pharmacies. The work Pilots carry out goes mostly unnoticed by members of the public but is key to Keeping Britain Trading.”

ABP is one of the UK’s largest Marine employers, whose professional team ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Humber Estuary.

PORT OF HULL WELCOMES NEW VOLVO L150H

Associated British Ports (ABP) Port of Hull welcomed the delivery of a new Volvo L150H to its dry bulk handling facility North Gap.

Part of ABP’s ongoing investment to improve the infrastructure across the Humber Ports’ the new shovel is more efficient than the former G-series, achieving up to 15% greater fuel efficiency, thanks to its powerful engine, second generation OptiShift and new dry P-Brake.

The Port of Hull plays a valuable role in supporting agricultural markets all year round. Its North Gap terminal handles a range of agribulk cargoes such as cereals, pulses and oilseeds which goes into making beer, flour, and breakfast cereals. Along with biomass which is used as fuel.

ABP’s network of 21 Ports handles over 4 million tonnes of agribulk each year. Experienced and multi-skilled Port Operations Teams work ensure cargoes are handled safely and efficiently for customers using state-of-the-art equipment.

Simon Bird, Director Humber, said: “ABP has been making significant investments to improve efficiency and lower our carbon

emissions across the ports plant and equipment for many years. This drive has been led not in isolation, ABP’s customers want to support sustainable supply chains.

ABP has great ambitions for British trade, making the most of the opportunity afforded by creating a cleaner and greener economy of the future. This year ABP set out its plan to invest a further £2 billion in decarbonising our operations by 2040 at the latest and in major infrastructure projects to enable the wider UK energy transition.”

The Humber Ports are home to solar arrays mounted on the rooftops of warehouses. Providing 29% of the port’s energy requirement, plans are being made to compliment solar energy generation with onshore wind on the Port Estate.

ABP’s ‘Ambitious for Britain’ frames how ABP is enabling the UK clean energy transition and catalysing growth in coastal communities and industrial locations across Britain.

GRAIN HANDLING AT PORT OF IMMINGHAM

The Port of Immingham has handled over 137,000 tonnes of grain since investing in a new grain handling system.

As preparation for the UK harvest gets underway, the north Lincolnshire port is preparing itself for a busy season of grain handling.

With farmers exporting the last of the large domestic surplus of grain to make way for the 2023 harvest, port owners Associated British Ports are targeting those in central and eastern England to use the port for their business.

The largest port operator invested significantly in grain handling operations earlier this year at the east coast port, with two metal plate bunds which can be set up on any quay on any surface. They can also be sanitised between vessel discharges meaning grain for human consumption can be handled, and a specific standard of cleanliness is met. Using the new Liebherr 420 mobile harbour cranes means faster and more time efficient handling operations. Located nearby is a weighbridge, essential in ensuring what quantity of grain is being loaded onto the ship. In 2022, 81,000

tonnes of grain passed through the Humber ports’ quays.

Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber ports said: “This is a great achievement in support of our customers, existing and new. It’s a cost-effective method of ensuring we can load on to any quay in inner dock. It’s a developed and proven capability for operations to receive and load human consumption grains, which is part of our key competitiveness.”

The Humber plays a strategic role in relation to export markets and our continued investment into infrastructure and equipment maintains our agility and resilience in keeping Britain trading.”

The Port of Immingham is suitably located in north Lincolnshire and is one of the largest ports in the UK by volume of tonnage. It plays an important role in supporting UK supply chains for both imports and exports across Europe and beyond.

The inner dock can take cargo vessels

between 4,000 and 27,500 tonnes. With an experienced ops team, strict adherence to Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops (TASCC) accreditation is another reason why customers choose us.

Since the beginning of this year, operators have already handled over 137,000 tonnes of grain handled by the new grain loading system. On average 250 lorries a day arrive direct from the farm to the vessel, and the grain is directly loaded thus saving on storage costs.

Earlier this year the UK arable sector had a large domestic surplus of grain and to make way for the 2023 harvest, stores will need clearing to make way for the new crop, which is seeing a bumper market in agribulks.

The Port of Immingham’s grain handling facility is open to deep water vessels and can operate around the clock. There is a weighbridge close to the berths, and access points for sampling the cargo adjacent to the quays.

WEST HAVEN WAY BECOMES A HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE THANKS TO PARTNERSHIP PROJECT AT THE PORT OF IMMINGHAM

With support and guidance from Humber Nature Partnership, a team of nine volunteers from the companies planted foxglove, mullein and purple loosestrife to complement the herbaceous species already present in the verge such as teasel and yellow rattle.

Part of the transformation includes the creation of a 100 metre long green wall. Utilising an existing concrete boundary wall, volunteers have planted climbers such as honeysuckle, ivy and winter jasmine to prefixed sections of trellis and there are plans to put in place bird nesting boxes.

In time the 1,000 square metre verge will transform into valuable habitat for a range of wildlife including: butterflies, birds and small mammals. Along with habitat improvements for wildlife, once established the enhanced verge and green wall will also help to

suppress dust in the form of particulates from the road.

Simon Bird, Director Humber, said: “As part of our commitment to sustainability we actively look for areas we can make improvements to for all manner of flora and fauna. Working in partnership is key to our work, my thanks to CPL, DFDS and the Humber Nature Partnership for bringing this project to life.”

Humber Nature Partnership Conservation Officer, Alan Jones, said: “The entire verge will now be managed as a wildlife haven and promises a year-round display. The team will be working on further development of the area across the year.”

Jason Sutton, CEO of CPL Products, said: “With sustainability at the core of our strategy we were proud to work with DFDS and ABP on this programme to transform the land

on the border of our site into a wildlife haven. I’d like to thank the team of volunteers from CPL Products who played a key part in delivering this project and look forward to seeing how this land changes through the seasons.”

Richard Lait, DFDS Head of HSE said: “Sustainability is high on the agenda within many organisations including DFDS. We recognise one of the most effective ways to help wildlife is to preserve the environment in which the animals live, and DFDS Seaways will continue to work in partnership with ABP and others to support these excellent initiatives.”

ABP’s new sustainability strategy, Ready for Tomorrow, outlines a plan to invest around £2 billion in decarbonising its own operations by 2040 at the latest and in major infrastructure projects to enable the wider UK energy transition.

ALL WEATHER TERMINAL SUPPORTS BUSINESS GROWTH FOR NW TRADING LIMITED AT THE PORT OF HULL

Logistics, supply chain and storage specialist, NW Trading Limited, have agreed a long-term deal with Associated British Ports (ABP) for the All Weather Terminal at the Port of Hull.

The 16,630 sqm fully enclosed cargo-handling and storage facility is unique in the UK and provides uninterrupted all-weather working and cargo storage for weather-sensitive products. Cargo can be effectively handled from ship to shore without weather delays. The terminal is segregated into three stores, two designed to store dry bulk cargo and the third to house breakbulk cargo. The breakbulk facility benefits from five, 25 tonne automated overhead gantry cranes, a designated undercover rail-freight connection, and HGV loading facilities.

NW Trading Limited will now be operating

the facility on a long-term lease where they will be handling and storing both bulk and bagged dry bulk commodities.

NW Trading Limited, Director, Zara Giles said: “NWT is long established in the Shortsea sector partnering with multiple bluechip companies to provide Stevedoring services across the Humber and Mersey. The addition of the All Weather Terminal to our facilities in Hull opens up access for our customers to deep water enabling more flexibility in their supply chain and allowing the procurement of product from further afield, key to staying competitive in today’s turbulent commodity markets.”

Director Humber, Simon Bird, said: “ABP has a longstanding relationship with NW Trading, which has been delivering operations at ABP Humber’s Port of Goole for many years now. We are thrilled to be supporting their continued business expansion into the Port of Hull, enabling them to make the most of the

HUMBER FREEPORT LAUNCHES WITH AMBITION TO GENERATE HUGE INVESTMENT AND OVER 7,000 JOBS

Humber Freeport has launched with a mission to drive hundreds of millions of pounds of investment and at least 7,000 new jobs.

The freeport will harness the unique potential and location of the Humber to stimulate economic growth, skills development and inward investment in both established and emerging industries.

Huge opportunities to build on the region’s fast-growing renewable energy industries have already been identified, as well as potential investment in the chemicals, logistics, advanced manufacturing and technology sectors.

Humber Freeport was officially launched at

a VIP event at Associated British Ports’ Pump House at Hull’s Alexandra Dock – a stone’s throw from Siemens Gamesa’s wind turbine blade manufacturing facility.

With links both to the region’s rich maritime past and the offshore wind industry, which is a key part of the Humber’s exciting present and future, the Grade-II listed Pump House provided a fitting backdrop for the official launch of Humber Freeport.

The event, attended by leading figures from the public and private sectors, marked the establishment of the Humber

Freeport Company Ltd and signals that the organisation is now fully up and running.

Speaking at the event, Humber Freeport Chair Simon Bird said: “The Humber Freeport has an outstanding and potentially unique opportunity to be not merely a source for economic growth, but the primary vehicle for the delivery of the Government’s levelling up agenda in the Humber.

“Humber Freeport will seek to secure hundreds of millions of pounds of private sector investment and the final business case conservatively estimates that such investment

will create at least 7,000 new, mostly skilled, jobs. This investment will have a transformative effect in lifting the prospects of the region.”

Mr Bird outlined the benefits freeport status brings to companies investing in the tax and customs sites within the Humber Freeport footprint on both banks of the Humber Estuary.

Humber Freeport comprises of three defined tax sites – Hull East; Able Marine Energy Park and Immingham, on the south bank of the Humber; and Goole – each of which offers incentives for businesses operating within the zones.

Benefits include land tax relief, business rate relief, enhanced capital allowances and National Insurance contribution relief for employers.

In addition, a new customs zone which has been created at Grimsby will help unlock growth in the car handling and storage sector, supporting the growth of the electric car industry.

Mr Bird said investors also benefit from “assumed permitted development rights to speed up the planning process” and that “when added to being adjacent to highquality port operations, the offer becomes even more appealing”.

Mr Bird was joined as a speaker at the launch event by Michael Green, Head of Freeports at the Department for Business and Trade. Mr Green coordinates the department’s work to establish freeports as national hubs

for global trade and investment and promote their attractiveness to prospective investors and export markets overseas.

He said: “Freeports represent a generational shift. Inward investment is hugely important for job creation and regeneration and we are looking to build on the UK’s centres of excellence with targeted Government support. Humber Freeport will play a key role in decarbonising industry in what is the largest industrial cluster in the UK.

“It will ensure the region makes the most of the unique assets it holds. Being within four hours of most areas of the UK, the size of opportunity here in the Humber should not be underestimated.”

Freeport status will enable the Humber to maximise opportunities from the net zero transition, in offshore wind and other low carbon technologies, creating highly-skilled jobs and driving investment.

As the largest energy-related cluster in north west Europe, the Humber is often referred to as the UK’s Energy Estuary.

Decarbonisation is one of three key workstreams established by Humber Freeport, alongside skills and innovation, and will be a key focus for the freeport’s work.

Humber Freeport will build on significant ongoing investment in the region, including Pensana’s £150m rare earth metals processing plant, now under construction, and plans by Meld Energy to invest £180m in a green hydrogen production facility, both at

Saltend Chemicals Park, east of Hull, which sits within the freeport footprint.

At Goole, Siemens Mobility is investing up to £200m in a rail manufacturing facility, where tube trains for London’s Piccadilly line will be built. The factory is the heart of a growing rail village encompassing manufacturing, servicing and research and development facilities.

Jo Barnes is the Managing Director at Sewell Estates, a key partner in the Yorkshire Energy Park, east of Hull, which is set to be the UK’s first freeport-based energy and technology business park.

Speaking at the launch event, she said: “Securing freeport status is a huge opportunity for the Humber. It will significantly raise the profile of the area to potential end users and investors on the global stage.

“We’ve already got early evidence of this at Yorkshire Energy Park, with our site moving forward confidently and early site works planned for later this year in anticipation of construction commencing next year.

“The benefits are not just financial either. It’s been great to see freeport partners working together for mutual benefit, from commercial partnerships to directing end user interest or working with statutory agencies. We can tell a more coherent story about the area’s potential and the freeport can act as a catalyst for solid and sustainable growth.”

THE GREATER LINCOLNSHIRE LEP

FOCUSES ON INNOVATION

This year the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership has continued to attract innovation, skills and high-value companies to the area, writes Chief Executive Ruth Carver.

Despite ongoing national and global challenges, we are confident in the strength of our game-changing sectors (UK Food Valley, Humber Freeport, defence and security, and green energy) to help build a stronger economy for Greater Lincolnshire and overcome universal issues such as climate change.

DIRECTORS

It was announced in March that Professor Neal Juster, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, had been chosen to lead the Greater Lincolnshire LEP as its new Chair.

He has replaced Pat Doody, who stepped

down after serving three years as Chair and eight years as a board director.

Neal Juster has a deep knowledge of the engineering sector which will be an advantage as we promote and strengthen the manufacturing and engineering heritage of Greater Lincolnshire.

Four new non-executive directors have also joined the LEP Board, drawn from the private sector and third sector:

Liam Scully, CEO of Lincoln City FC

Shaun Povey, Head of Strategic Planning & Projects at Siemens Energy

Nikki Cooke, CEO of Lives

Mark Webb, CEO of E-Factor

THE GREATER LINCOLNSHIRE LEP 22 humberguides.co.uk | Issue 2024
Prof Neal Juster: Professor Neal Juster, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, became Chair of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP in March 2023. Defence Network launch The Greater Lincolnshire Defence and Security Network was launched at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln in September 2022.

This development will have a significantly positive impact on the region with the creation of new jobs, the further development of the industrial supply chain and the recognition that the Humber’s assets are of huge value to the UK.

DEFENCE

This year the LEP has been working to create a nationally recognised cluster of innovationfocused companies in the defence and security sector.

UK FOOD VALLEY

Since its launch in 2021, the UK Food Valley has been supporting the growth of the food industry and promoting major investments in production, skills, innovation, low carbon and technology.

The launch of the South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone (FEZ) in September 2022 was a big step forward for the future of food production and represents over £16m investment to support Greater Lincolnshire’s agri-food sector.

We have also secured over £100m of new partnership R&D projects with the food and farming industry, involving 200 partners working on over 110 innovation projects.

It was announced last autumn that the UK Food Valley has committed to promoting the cluster north of Lincoln as the Agricultural Growth Zone (AG Zone) and work continues on this.

SKILLS BOOTCAMPS

In September 2022 we were awarded £820,000 to fund the delivery of news Skills Bootcamps on behalf of the Department of Education, as part of Wave 3 of the scheme.

Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks which give participants the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills, helping them to get a new job, or to progress within their current job.

A variety of courses were available during Wave 3 across multiple sectors including food and drink, transport and healthcare.

The LEP has received a further £2m in funding as part of Wave 4 of the scheme and we are now offering new Skills Bootcamps in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council.

Climate change has become a global issue and the UK government has set the UK a target to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Positioned geographically and strategically as we are, clean energy is a big opportunity for Greater Lincolnshire.

The low carbon and energy economy is worth £1.2bn in Greater Lincolnshire and has a lot of potential. With a private investment level of £60bn over the next fifteen years, major opportunities exist in offshore wind alongside decarbonisation and hydrogen and carbon storage projects.

The Humber is the UK’s Energy Estuary, home to two of the UK’s six oil refineries and the second largest chemicals cluster, and it is also leading the way in emerging green technologies that will power the future.

Over the last few months we have welcomed seven new members to the Energy Council and we have now begun to develop a programme of work which will support the energy ambitions of our region.

GREEN ENERGY HUMBER FREEPORT

In March 2023 the Humber Freeport received government approval, allowing it to progress its ambitious vision resulting in the creation of up to 7,500 jobs and over £4bn of private investment.

This announcement is the result of a substantial amount of hard work and commitment from all our partner organisations and companies, and we are very proud that our clean energy cluster now boasts:

• innovative energy-to-waste plants

• over 20 operational onshore wind farms

• the country’s pre-eminent centres for offshore wind turbine blade manufacture, assembly and installation

• a leading global hub for offshore wind O&M at the Port of Grimsby

• various investments in hydrogen and other renewables

There are more than 80 companies locally already operating directly in this sector, employing 10,000 to 12,000 people.

Following the creation of the Defence and Security Board last year, we have now launched a Regional Defence and Security Cluster which was recognised by the Government’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) in July 2023.

Our aim this year is to attract new businesses to Lincolnshire and to attend DSEL, an internationally important event.

PODCASTS

This year we are proud to have launched the Greater Lincolnshire LEP podcast series to bring you news and views across our economic priorities for Greater Lincolnshire and Rutland.

So far there have been three episodes focusing on the next generation of leaders in the food sector, the importance of school careers teams collaborating with local businesses, and the growing defence and security sector in Greater Lincolnshire. The head of a leading engineering training organisation has called for businesses to create their own “local powerhouse” after welcoming employers and learners to a new £5.5m skills centre.

CALL TO WORK TOGETHER ON “LOCAL POWERHOUSE”

Iain Elliott, CEO of Humberside Engineering Training Centre (HETA), revealed that the new facility at Pioneer Business Park in Stallingborough was paid for using reserves

and a bank loan in the absence of any funding or support from government.

He added that the “homegrown”

nature of the project reinforced HETA’s commitment to ensure as much work as possible went to the local and regional business community.

HETA welcomed around 80 representatives of local businesses and national companies for a tour of the new centre, which is purpose-built and provides facilities for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and fabrication and welding, with an IT suite, classrooms and meeting rooms.

He told guests: “The financial investment by HETA should not be overlooked. We did this at a time of no grant funding, no public funding. We relied on our reserves that we have built up over the years and on borrowing. Santander have again been very supportive.

“The bank and our trustees recognised that a project like this is vital for building the educational needs of the region and for the employers.”

Hull-based construction company Hobson & Porter built the new facility, adding to its wealth of experience across the Humber region supporting skills in the energy and engineering sectors.

Figures collated by HETA show that of the total build cost of £4.2m, just over £3m was

for works carried out by businesses within 30 miles of the site, £3.4m was spent with businesses withing 40 miles and £3.97m with traders within 50 miles.

Just over 42 per cent of the work was carried out by trades local to Grimsby and Immingham and 37.4 per cent of work was completed by trades local to Hull.

With the addition of the land purchase price, fees and VAT the total cost of the project hit £5.5m and was on budget.

Iain said: “We were only two weeks late and we’re not too worried about that given the impact of exiting Covid and war in Ukraine, with material costs soaring and supply of materials and labour both major issues. When the learners were ready to come in, we were ready to open.”

He added that HETA is now eager to welcome other businesses to its location at the heart of North East Lincolnshire Council’s £42m South Humber Industrial Investment Programme (SHIIP) area, which is being promoted as a major industrial development opportunity.

Specialised precision machined components

He said: “Hopefully we will start seeing construction activity on some of the nearby sites. I really do want to see these pockets of land transformed and generating that local investment.

Corrosion prevention

“People talk about the Northern Powerhouse but we need to build our own local powerhouse because the spend will stay within the area. Our figures from this project show how we used the local supply chain.”

Component reclamation and enhancement

Production machinery, maintenance and repair

Ian Palmer, recently appointed as chair of HETA, said the new centre itself will help to drive the local powerhouse concept.

He said: “It’s a centre that’s owned by HETA but our view is it belong to the employers and is here to serve their needs and requirements. They will be investing in young people who will be coming here for their first experience of the engineering world and hopefully that will set them up for their careers.

GRAYTON LTD FIT FOR FUTURE

Carl Meale part owner and Operations Director for Grayton Ltd invited Commerce and Industry Magazine to interview employees who are in the process of career progression to discover just what that investment means, not only for the business but the people at its heart.

LEARNING TODAY, LEADING TOMORROW.

Jim Bradshaw, Trainee Project Manager, has been employed by Grayton for six years and is currently being upskilled to a Project Manager.

Jim told us: “I joined Grayton six years ago as a time-served welder, before being offered a supervisory role around four years ago.

“At that time, I began working on smaller projects with various more experienced project managers. This allowed me to broaden my role within the company, whilst learning valuable skills and training on-site. The management team place a great deal of time investing in their workforce – this has been a great opportunity for me to further my career.

Carl Meale says, “Jim will continue to be upskilled within the business and will attend external and virtual training courses to ensure that he progresses in his role within the business and enhances his engineering and supervisory capabilities.”

Jim explains: “As a Trainee Project Manager, I am responsible for the pre-planning of upcoming projects. This includes ensuring we have the correct equipment on site, as well as the labour and resources required to complete

the project. Working closely with the client and meeting stringent budget and timescale requirements are also hugely important.”

“I have helped to manage several significant projects in recent years, including a £1.2 million project at Ribblesdale. This project included the removal of a large kiln section and replacing it with new. The section to be removed was 126 tonnes and had to be planned and completed meticulously, in line with the client’s requirements. The team worked around the clock for 24 hours, with 16 employees on site –with the project lasting around 4 to 5 weeks. We worked closely with the client to provide daily updates and ensure that work was completed on time and in budget.”

Jim said: “As a company, Grayton is hugely supportive of their employees. I have personally felt more valued as an employee and confident in my ability to progress further within the business. I look forward to continuing to train and develop the skills required to become a project manager at Grayton in the future.”

GROWING GREATNESS THROUGH LEARNING.

Ryan Brock joined Grayton Engineering 5 years ago, having previously worked in the construction industry. He began as a semiskilled employee, before being upskilled to a rigger. Ryan has been given the opportunity to progress his career gaining qualifications, experience and skills.

Working alongside more skilled tradesmen in the company and with regular assessments, Ryan completed a one-year course on-site to become a rigger. Throughout the 12 months, he had to complete a portfolio of tasks to prove his competence, and successfully achieved the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction Lifting, Positioning and Installing Structures.

Ryan told us: “Since joining the company, the management team at Grayton have always been hugely supportive and have invested in my training and upskilling which has allowed me to successfully gain more qualifications and further my career aspirations.”

More recently, Ryan became a supervisor after completing the SSSTS course.

Carl Meale states: “If Ryan continues with the

same enthusiasm and commitment already shown I foresee a bright future for him.”

Ryan said: “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities which Grayton have given me. I feel like a valued employee, and I have been able to advance my career with the company by demonstrating my capabilities, both on-site and through the courses and qualifications that I’ve completed.”

STRONGER TEAMS, STRONGER RESULTS. Leon Mumby is in the 3rd year of a Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship.

Leon told us: “My role includes working alongside qualified fitters on-site to learn the trade. Grayton is a great company to work for and engineering is the perfect career choice for me. The team here are hugely supportive and I have completed many practical training courses including Working at Height, Laser Alignment, Lifting, and Communications.

“I will complete my apprenticeship and become a qualified mechanical fitter in 2024.

Ashley Gibbons apprentice draughtsman had this to say following his first year of training.

“I originally studied at HETA, the opportunity arose for me to start an apprenticeship with RJE and Grayton a year ago. My training includes mechanical, technical and CAD (computeraided design).

“I’m really interested in the design side of the business and working with the skilled team at RJE has enabled me to expand my design capabilities and knowledge. I have completed one year of the apprenticeship which is a 2-year course, after which I will become a draughtsman. “RJE and Grayton have been hugely supportive and encouraging, and I’m pleased that my training will be continuing with the company.

I have recently enrolled in an HNC Mechanical Engineering course, which is part-time for 2 years - working here at RJE, as well as attending Grimsby Institute for one day a week. This is another fantastic opportunity which the company has given me, and I’m looking

forward to furthering my career in mechanical engineering, particularly on the design side of the business.”

Amy Cook, Training Manager at Grayton, started with the company nine years ago as a business and admin apprentice before being promoted to the Training Manager position in 2020. Her role now encompasses all the training needs of the company and Amy collaborates closely with schools, colleges and training providers in the region to encourage young people to join Grayton on a wide range of

apprenticeship schemes covering all aspects of engineering.

Amy told us: “Over the past few years, our apprenticeship schemes have been hugely successful. We have taken on six new apprentices in 2023. With an aging workforce, it is fundamental that Grayton invests in its people so that expert knowledge and essential skills are transferred to the next generation of engineers. It’s crucial that young people see engineering as a great career choice.”

“We also offer upskilling and training to our semi-skilled workers, many of whom want to learn a trade and become riggers, pipefitters, and welders. It is never too late to undertake upskilling, our eldest upskilled employee was 60 at the time of commencing their training. It is essential to offer these opportunities so that we can grow as a business and so that our employees feel valued and supported within our company.”

Carl Meale says: “Training and upskilling the workforce allows a business to expand and develop organically. By working alongside highly skilled employees and managers, the workforce will learn new skills and exceptional engineering knowledge and expertise will pass from one generation to the next. This will future-proof the company and ensure that employees can adapt to new technology – therefore ultimately becoming more competitive in the world of engineering and ensuring Grayton Ltd are fit for the future.

SITE CLEARANCE & DEMOLITION

For those businesses and contractors working in the construction industry, it is important that sites are cleared thoroughly and effectively prior to the start of any building works. Specialists in this field are therefore required to carry out appropriate site clearance and vegetation management.

Leading site clearance and demolition experts in our region can therefore provide a complete site clearance package, specifically aimed at utility or construction companies, land agents, farming estates, shooting syndicates or land and property developers. The main purpose of site clearance is to remove existing buildings, waste and vegetation.

Today, site clearance is required for a wide range of projects and the work must be completed by highly skilled staff who are

trained in operating an extensive fleet of arboriculture equipment including multi terrain tracked mulchers, excavator flails, chippers, shredders, and log cranes.

Any demolition works or site clearance must always be carried out by specialist demolition contractors and companies which specialise in vegetation management, as safety and competence is always a key priority.

Site clearance is required before work on a building project can begin and before foundations for a structure can be laid.

Vegetation removal is often required, and this must be completed in a professional and regulated manner by experts in the industry in preparation for a wide range of site development, land management and building and construction projects.

Leading plant hire firms are also on hand to support the sector by supplying non operated plant hire to builders, civil engineering contractors and the general public.

Rainham Steel proudly stands as proof to a remarkable five-decade commitment to the construction industry. Amid the celebrations of its 50-year anniversary, the company takes a reflective pause to look back on a journey that commenced in 1973. Rooted in constant values of customer satisfaction, technological progress, and environmental responsibility, Rainham Steel has risen to become an industry leader in the realm of supplying and delivering quality constructional steel products. Its reputation for excellence extends from its distribution hubs in North Lincolnshire and London, providing nationwide coverage to the construction industry.

A Tradition of Excellence: Meeting Customer Expectations: Rainham Steel’s foundation was built on delivering products that exceed customer expectations. Specializing in the supply of Universal Beams, Universal Columns, Channels, Angles, Large Flats, and Structural Hollow Sections, the company has established itself as a trusted partner for major Steel Fabricators, Stockholders, Construction Companies, Civil Engineers, and Builders Merchants. Rainham Steel’s commitment to timely supply and delivery remains unwavering, ensuring that each project’s needs are met with precision, reliability, and value.

For approximately three decades, Rainham Steel has also been running a reinforcement processing facility at its headquarters in Rainham, Essex catering to the construction sector in both London and the wider Southeast of England. Just two years ago, the company transitioned to a new 10-acre head office development site, with a £10 million investment.

Pioneering Infrastructure: A Network of Growth: With a strategic vision in mind, in 2002, Rainham Steel positioned itself in North Lincolnshire, and with constant investment, now boasts four expansive sites in and around the Scunthorpe area. These locations were handpicked for their central accessibility to the entire UK and proximity to crucial dock facilities for seamless imports and exports. With an annual turnover exceeding £250 million and a team of over 200 across all locations, the company operates with a fleet of more than 50 HGV vehicles, streamlining deliveries and minimizing environmental impact. A Vision Beyond: Anticipating the Future: As Rainham Steel gears up for the launch of its Althorpe facility, expansion plans are already underway for a purpose-built 200,000 sqft facility at the new site. With production scheduled to commence early next year, the site is poised to produce an impressive 50,000 tonnes of reinforcement annually. Bolstered by ongoing operator training, this expansion is expected to create over 60 local jobs. With a constant forward-looking approach, Rainham Steel is set to channel a further £15 million in investment into its growth plans in the next two years, underscoring its commitment to both pioneering solutions and sustainability.

Investment for Tomorrow: A Vision of Growth: The story of Rainham Steel is one of perpetual development. This 17-acre storage facility, purchased in March 2023 at a cost of £2.7 million, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art reinforcement processing facility, with a further investment of £3.5 million in cutting edge technology, including processing machines, cranes, and other plant. He goes on to say how the project was accomplished in a mere five months and again demonstrates Rainham Steel’s enduring commitment to innovation and progress, as well as the company’s long-term growth plans in Scunthorpe and the North Lincolnshire region.

As Rainham Steel marks its five-decade anniversary its story is one of dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. myenergi.com

Putting Lincolnshire on the map as a hub for renewable tech

The past 12 months has proven somewhat of a whirlwind for myenergi. From collaborating with McMurtry Automotive and announcing a game-changing new partnership with online car marketplace cinch, to meeting the Prime Minister and being named in the Times 100 for the second year running, the company’s impressive progress continues at record pace.

While it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the Stallingborough-headquartered setup, its fair to say that myenergi is now one of the region’s best-known, and most admired, brands. Founded just seven years ago, the business has since brought a suite of gamechanging products to market, opened subsidiaries all over the globe and changed the way consumers think about their energy.

But rather than slowly emerging as a challenger brand, myenergi has shot to fame and is already well on the way to becoming a global market leader. Indeed, 2023 saw unit sales surpass 500,000, while the launch of its smart battery – libbi – has already taken the market by storm.

The company’s wider product range includes zappi – the world’s first ecosmart electric vehicle (EV) charger; eddi – a clever device that directs surplus renewable energy to your hot water cylinder, underfloor heating, towel rail or storage heaters; and harvi – myenergi’s state-of-the-art energy harvesting sensor. Each product is built on a commitment to circularity and a vision of sustainability for generations to come, demonstrating the disruptive potential of next-generation technology and aiming to bridge the gap to the smart home of tomorrow.

With the ambition of helping users to maximise the potential of self-generated renewable energy, myenergi supports its customers in

minimising their reliance on fossil fuels and embracing electrification. As society transitions towards the zero-carbon world of tomorrow, the company aims to make energy independence simple and achievable for everyone.

Through myenergi’s incredible journey, Lincolnshire continues to prove the perfect base for its global operations. Having recently relocated its headquarters to a custom-built eco office development on the outskirts of Grimsby, 2023 has seen significant progress made in adding a 66,000 sq ft production facility to the growing site.

Featuring automated assembly lines and the latest technologies, the advanced manufacturing centre aims to set the standards in capability and productivity. Alongside optimising production of myenergi’s globally acclaimed product range, the three-story facility will also house myenergi’s warehousing operations, alongside a canteen, gym and additional office space.

Committed to cementing relationships with the local area, myenergi remains the official sponsor of Grimsby Town Football Club and has once again collaborated with its owners to launch the ‘23/24 mygrimsby fund. The initiative aims to give back to the community and will see local charities benefit from financial support to help them drive an even greater social impact.

Split into three key areas of support: social (activities that promote or address the interests of those in need within the local community), environmental (projects or programmes that protect the environment) and economic (groups and enterprises that promote development), the fund aims to celebrate the hard work of individuals, businesses and charities across North-East Lincolnshire.

Alongside the partnership with GTFC myenergi are also supporting local projects including Projekt Renewables, an educational discovery hub in the Alexandra Dock area of Grimsby showcasing the opportunities in the area presented by the green economy and the Horizon Youth Centre, developed by the OnSide national charity to bring a state of the art facility to help young people in the region explore their potential.

Last season, the initiative provided funding to 24 community groups, including BeGreatFitness’s Food for Thought Project – an innovative educational resource pack designed for secondary schools KS4 and sixth form; and The Canoe River Cleaner’s ongoing environmental project to improve the health of the River Freshney by preventing plastic pollution.

Elsewhere, the latest cohort of apprentices has recently joined the business, as part of the ‘myenergi academi’ initiative. The innovative programme aims to support STEM learning across greater Lincolnshire, while identifying the talented team members of tomorrow alongside. Throughout the apprenticeship programme, applicants can expect to develop a wide range of business skills, including technical knowledge, leadership, ethics and management.

In addition to new starters, the academi will also serve staff development with an internal training prospectus that will cover renewables, energy, sustainability, and the circular economy, as well as supporting the long-term career opportunities available within the sector. The internal training programme will be delivered to give anyone joining myenergi the kick-start they need in such an exciting industry.

As the business continues to grow, so does its influence. For the second year running, myenergi was named within the Times 100 – the official list of the UK’s fastest-growing private businesses. Reaching #26, and entering the top ten for businesses in the north of England, demonstrates just how remarkable the journey has been.

As the importance of sustainability and decarbonisation continues to rise up the national agenda, the world will undoubtedly become more circular. myenergi remains committed to operating at the forefront and changing the way consumers think about energy. The business demonstrates the pride and passion Lincolnshire has to offer, putting it on the map as a hub for renewable energy tech.

GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP WITH LOGISTICS COULD UNLOCK £3.9 BILLION IN ECONOMIC GROWTH, SAYS

More targeted government investment – combined with action to improve the flow of goods across borders and a commitment to work in closer partnership with the logistics sector – could boost GDP by £3.9 billion per annum by 2030, and generate enough revenue to finance the salaries of 20,000 nurses according to a new independent report by Oxford Economics on behalf of business group Logistics UK.

Logistics: Delivering a solution to the UK’s productivity puzzle’ outlines how the ability of UK’s logistics system to support greater competition and efficiency in the UK economy is being held back by challenges caused by border friction and a lack of investment in national infrastructure, innovation and skills – which, if addressed, could also result in an increase in annual household disposable income.

David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK comments: “The UK’s economy faces a productivity challenge at present, but logistics can be a big part of the solution. This report, conducted on our behalf by Oxford Economics, emphasises how improving the productivity of the logistics sector, one of the UK’s most significant economic contributors, would have a positive impact on the whole economy. However, the findings also suggest that reversing the UK’s decline in productivity and delivering these gains is beyond the control of industry operators alone and will take concerted effort and investment by government.

“To ensure that the nation’s decline in productivity is addressed, it is imperative that government works with the sector to establish a cross-Whitehall Logistics Productivity Forum, to maximise the benefits that this sector can deliver to the whole economy.”

With the UK currently in joint 19th position in the World Bank logistics rankings – a substantial drop from an average ranking of 6th between 2012 and 2018 – the report, sponsored by Amazon and Volvo Trucks, outlines how a return to the top ten would unlock a significant boost in GDP through productivity gains. As Mr Wells continues, this would not only result in an approximate £80 per annum increase to the annual income of the UK’s 30 million households – a £2.3 billion boost to domestic budgets by 2030 - but could also raise enough in additional taxation to finance the annual salaries of more than 20,000 nurses. If the UK was to become a global leader in logistics, this benefit would be doubled to £7.9 billion a year.

“To deliver the gains outlined in this report, the logistics sector requires government to work in strategic partnership with the private sector to deliver improved infrastructure, reduce friction at the country’s borders to boost trade, resolve skills gaps and invest in innovation to drive efficiency.”

The new analysis also highlights that, while there would be a significant economic benefit for the UK from addressing these challenges to close the gap with other nations, this must be achieved alongside delivering the transition to a green economy.

Mr Wells adds: “If the UK gets the transition to net zero right, it will align with long term higher productivity. In the short-term, significant levels of investment are required to make the necessary switch efficiently. Both public and private investment needs to avoid stranded assets. The logistics sector and government must work in partnership ensure that taxpayer and private investment in the transition delivers value for money and supports, rather than hinders, economic growth.

“Government support is vital to support the pace of change required, to prevent a loss in private sector efficiency, and ensure a smooth transition for all sectors of the economy.”

HOW SAFE IS YOUR EXTERNAL WAREHOUSE?

STATISTICS MAGNIFY THE NEED FOR PROPER FIRE PREVENTION

Local warehousing firm, GWS, has recently put together research around the rising threat of fire to businesses’ stock levels. Protecting your assets is essential to the future success of any organisation, and safe and secure warehousing is a vital component of your business strategy. However, the risk of fire can have catastrophic effects if not monitored sufficiently.

Immingham-based GWS found in a recent report by GOV.UK that fires in warehouses hit a 5-year high in 2021/2022. In data supplied to the Home Office’s Incident Recording System (IRS) from Fire and Rescue Authorities around the UK, reported fires in 2021/2022 had increased by over 25% on the previous period. With data yet to be produced for 2022/2023, this shines a light on the importance of adequate fire safety measures in warehouse and storage areas.

By prioritising fire safety, you can create a secure working environment to safeguard the safety and well-being of your employees. Every business is responsible for ensuring that each individual feels protected and empowered to feel confident in their daily operations.

Creating a fire safety plan becomes especially crucial in spaces with high ceilings and wideopen areas. Detecting fires can be more difficult under these conditions, which presents a problem for warehouses and

storage facilities. However, it’s not impossible. Prioritising early detection of fires significantly reduces the potential risks to individuals, property and products.

With the right expertise and proper equipment, we can make sure that risks are mitigated and that your products are stored safe and sound.

Fire safety is no accident.

The statistics surrounding warehouse fires in the UK highlight the serious requirement to adopt robust fire safety protocols. Conducting comprehensive risk assessments, installing state-of-the-art detection and suppression systems, providing thorough employee training, and promoting well-defined evacuation plans can effectively reduce the risks associated with fires and protect your most valuable assets.

When looking for an external warehouse management company, it is imperative to enquire about their fire safety policy and find out how they protect your products from the

risk of fire. Check your contractor’s warehouse credentials, so you have the peace of mind that your product is safe.

Protecting your stock means saving money by preventing damaged or destroyed stock. Furthermore, demonstrating that you are looking after your stock results in reduced costs in your insurance premiums.

A solid warehouse management system should demonstrate excellent fire detection and suppression systems and is supported by a sound organisational plan. State-of-the-art aspirated fire detection systems can detect the early signs of pre-ignition molecules in the air. In addition, a physical presence with security staff monitoring the site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, adds an extra level of security and protection.

Never forget that fire safety is not just a requirement; it should be a fundamental commitment when trusting someone to look after your product.

WHY NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE IS A GREAT PLACE TO RELOCATE.

The availability of property, land, incentives, and skilled local workforce coupled with a Council authority who are committed to growing the local economy, working hand-in-hand with businesses makes NEL one of the best investment locations in the UK.

“We have a real desire to help businesses prosper and succeed in North East Lincolnshire. With our wonderful coastline and surrounding countryside, our skilled workforce, and competitive land and development cost, and our great infrastructure, we have the ideal package for businesses to invest here.”

Cllr Philip Jackson, Leader, North East Lincolnshire Council

Covering an area of 191.9km² with a population of 157,200 (2021) NEL hugs a stretch of the Humber Estuary, one of the busiest channels for shipping in the UK. The Port of Immingham alone is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, handling around 46 million tonnes of cargo every year.

Transport links are a huge selling point for the area with strong connections via road, sea, rail and air. A central UK location, NEL has fast motorway access to the M180, M18, M62 and M1/A1. All of England’s major conurbations are accessible in less than 4.5 hours by HGV. By sea the Port of Immingham provides direct sea freight connections to European and international destinations. Humberside Airport is located 7 miles from Immingham, providing a daily, 7 days-per-week ‘hub-feeder’ service to Amsterdam Schiphol. Via rail both Grimsby and Immingham ports are connected to the UK rail network, with more than 240 rail freight movements per week handled at Immingham terminal.

Great progress continues on the £42-million South Humber Industrial Investment Programme (SHIIP), the largest investment of its kind in the areas history, paving the way for industry and the local economy to flourish.

What makes SHIIP so special are its three main elements:

• A new £8m link road joining the key ports of Grimsby and Immingham opened in

2021, releasing access to undeveloped land on the South Bank of the Humber

• A 64ha business park, Pioneer Business Park, has now opened, with green energy company, myenergi, as the flagship tenants

The Park is now home to a new £5.5m engineering training centre. Operated by Humberside Engineering and Training Association, (HETA), it offers fantastic opportunities for hundreds of young people and adults.

• Cress Marsh and Novartis Ings Mitigation Sites – these are the only projects of their kind in Europe and offer significant advantages in time and costs for businesses wanting to develop within the SHIIP area.

ENSURING BUSINESS SECURITY:

A GUIDE TO

In today’s rapidly evolving world, businesses face

measures to protect their assets and employees.

Implementing a comprehensive security system is crucial not only for preventing theft and vandalism but also for ensuring the safety of your workforce and maintaining the trust of your customers. In this article, we will explore various security systems and services that can help safeguard your business effectively.

Intruder alarms are the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your business premises. Modern alarm systems are equipped with advanced sensors that can detect motion, broken windows, or forced entry. These systems are designed to alert security personnel or law enforcement in real-time, helping to deter criminals and minimize potential damage.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems have become an indispensable part of business security. These systems provide continuous monitoring of your premises, recording high-quality video footage that can serve as valuable evidence in case of security breaches. Additionally, the mere presence of visible cameras acts as a strong deterrent to potential intruders.

Mobile response units are a rapid and efficient way to address security incidents as they happen. These teams are dispatched to your location immediately upon receiving an alarm signal. They can assess the situation, intervene if necessary, and alert law enforcement when required, providing

a swift response that can prevent further harm.

Static guarding involves the deployment of trained security officers on-site. These professionals serve as a visible deterrent and can handle various security tasks, such as access control, monitoring surveillance systems, and conducting regular patrols. Having security personnel on-site ensures a quick response to any security threats or emergencies.

While protecting your business from intruders is vital, it’s equally essential to safeguard against fire hazards. Fire alarm systems are designed to detect smoke, heat, or other signs of fire and immediately

alert occupants while notifying local fire authorities. Early detection can save lives and prevent devastating property damage.

Security Officers

Security officers play a crucial role in maintaining a secure business environment. They can provide a human presence that deters potential threats and can respond quickly to security incidents. These professionals are often well-trained in conflict resolution and emergency procedures, making them an essential asset to any security plan.

Keyholding Services

Keyholding services offer a secure way to manage and respond to alarm activations.

Rather than relying on employees to

respond to alarms after hours, a trusted security provider holds your keys and can dispatch their personnel to investigate alarms on your behalf. This ensures a trained professional handles potential threats, reducing the risk to your staff.

Dog Handling

Security dog teams are highly effective at deterring intruders and enhancing security. Well-trained security dogs and their handlers can provide an added layer of protection, particularly in outdoor and large-scale premises. Their presence alone can discourage criminals from attempting a break-in.

Where security threats are ever-present, investing in a comprehensive security system is a wise decision for any business. Intruder alarms, CCTV systems, mobile response units, static guarding, fire alarm systems, security officers, keyholding services, and dog handling all contribute to a robust security framework. By implementing these measures, you can protect your assets, employees, and reputation, creating a safer and more secure environment for your business operations. Remember that the key to effective security is not just technology but also well-trained professionals who can respond swiftly and effectively to any threat that may arise.

Navigating the Legal Landscape

Selling a business involves navigating a labyrinthine legal landscape, replete with contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, tax implications, intellectual property concerns, and potential liabilities. Without a comprehensive understanding of these legal nuances, entrepreneurs risk exposing themselves to unforeseen legal and financial challenges that could cast a shadow over what should be a triumphant culmination of their efforts.

Legal professionals with expertise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) bring invaluable insights to the table. They can help you assess the true value of your business, structure the deal to maximise financial benefits, and identify potential legal pitfalls that could undermine the

transaction. From confidentiality agreements to due diligence, from negotiating purchase agreements to drafting non-compete clauses, legal experts safeguard your interests throughout the sale process.

Mitigating Risk and Ensuring Compliance

The sale of a business involves a myriad of regulatory obligations, ranging from industryspecific regulations to labour and employment laws. Failing to address these legal obligations could result in costly fines, legal disputes, and reputational damage. Legal services play a pivotal role in ensuring that your business is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, mitigating the risk of post-sale liabilities that could haunt both you and the new owner.

Moreover, legal professionals can conduct thorough due diligence to uncover any hidden legal risks that might not be immediately apparent. This diligence helps you identify and address potential obstacles before they escalate into post-sale legal disputes, fostering a smoother transition and protecting the integrity of the deal.

Negotiating for Optimal Outcomes

Negotiating the terms of a business sale requires

finesse, acumen, and an unwavering focus on your best interests. Legal experts bring their negotiation prowess to the table, advocating for terms that align with your goals and priorities. They can craft purchase agreements that provide adequate protections, including warranties and indemnities that shield you from future claims arising from pre-sale activities.

Furthermore, legal professionals can anticipate potential areas of contention and negotiate fair resolutions that satisfy all parties involved. Whether it’s determining the allocation of assets, addressing intellectual property rights, or handling post-closure matters, legal services are an essential asset in ensuring that negotiations result in outcomes that are favourable and sustainable.

From mitigating risks and ensuring compliance to negotiating optimal terms, legal professionals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. As you embark on the journey of selling your business, harnessing the power of legal expertise is a savvy business decision that safeguards your interests, maximizes value, and paves the way for a brighter future beyond the sale.

To make your home more desirable, why not invest in a new kitchen. Contemporary style kitchens not only add value to your property but are also practical and versatile – indeed the hub of any home and a central living and eating place for all the family.

Bright and modern soft furnishings around the home can also be a great option if you want to freshen up your living space. Why not add a pop of colour with new curtains or cushions, you can also add colour and brightness with houseplants and beautiful floral arrangements.

Your bedroom is your sanctuary avoid bold and bright colours if you seek a serene space and instead look for cooler hues that create a sense of space. This includes dark and soft greys and blues, soft greens are another excellent option.

In order to get the best night’s sleep, it may be time to invest in a new bed or mattress. Bedsteads are back with a vengeance with every style imaginable from classic to country to contemporary in both metal, wood, fabric or leather. The choice of mattresses to go with bedsteads has also grown, with a far greater choice of support and comfort than ever before.

Pocket spring mattresses tend to feel softer than open coil ones, as they are packed with smaller springs to give more individual support and tend to have softer, more luxurious fillings over the springs.
