Aztec Label invests in second C-Touch Plate Processor from Fujifilm, as well as a PRC-1 water filtration unit

Aztec Label finalised an investment in Fujifilm’s C-Touch MK2 2530 Plate Processor and PRC-1 water filtration unit, at Labelexpo Europe 2023, Brussels, Belgium.

Based in Kidderminster, UK, Aztec Label is a family-run business that has supplied high quality self-adhesive label products to a wide range of customers for 30 years. Owner, Colin Le Gresley, founded the company in his garage, in 1993 and, since then, the business has grown rapidly.

A Fujifilm customer for several years now, Aztec Label acquired its first C-Touch processor from Fujifilm in early 2021, when the company also invested in Fujifilm’s Flenex water-washable flexo plates; Sericol JJ LED UV inks, and an LED UV curing system.

Yorkshire whisky distillery wins two gold awards

The team at Hunmanby-based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery is celebrating its success in two prestigious world whisky competitions.

Filey Bay Flagship was awarded a gold medal and Best in Class at the Whiskies of the World competition, and Filey Bay STR Finish won gold at the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition.

Of the results, Spirit of Yorkshire’s Co-founder and MD, David Thompson said: “The Whiskies of the World Awards is an annual celebration of excellence in whisky from around the globe. With a distinguished panel of judges and a commitment to quality, the awards recognise the craftsmanship, diversity, and innovation within the whisky industry. We’re delighted and proud that Filey Bay Flagship beat stiff competition to win a coveted gold medal and to be judged Best in Class.

“In addition, Filey Bay STR Finish was the only English whisky to be awarded a gold medal at the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition. It’s very rewarding to be putting English whisky on the world whisky map by winning two gold medals at international competitions.”

Light, fruity and creamy, Filey Bay Flagship single malt whisky is made from field to bottle with 100% homegrown barley and is the culmination of the distillery’s ex-Bourbon matured style.

Filey Bay STR Finish’s primary maturation in ex-bourbon is followed by a secondary maturation, the finish, in Shaved Toasted and Re-charred ex-red wine casks that bring a deep colour and red fruit flavours to the whisky.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery is home to Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky, Filey Bay and is one of only a handful of distilleries worldwide that grows barley for whisky production. It is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor from Wold Top Brewery and business partner, David Thompson.

For further information on Spirit of Yorkshire Disillery please visit: www.spiritofyorkshire.com

Le Gresley, comments: “Having first invested in a C-Touch processor in 2021, as well as in other Fujifilm products, we’ve seen considerable success and growth to our business, and the benefit of being able to rely on a single supplier for so many solutions has been considerable. We are in no doubt that the time in now right for an investment in an additional processor, to support future business growth.”

ofi shares milestone on supporting farmer livelihoods to mark International Coffee Day

olam food ingredients (“ofi”), a global leader in naturally good food & beverage ingredients, announces that it has achieved more than half of its target to improve the livelihoods of 200,000 coffee farmers by 2025. The results are reported in its second Coffee LENS (Livelihoods, Education and Nature at Scale) sustainability impact report.

The report details the achievements made by ofi’s coffee platform in collaboration with customers and partners across 44 projects with a total funding commitment of over $50 million. Launched in 2020, ofi’s Coffee LENS sustainability strategy lays out their comprehensive 2025 goals within a fourpillar framework: economic opportunity, education and skills training, climate action and healthy ecosystems. Through this strategy, ofi aims to create a more resilient supply chain and safeguard the future of coffee. Despite challenges throughout 2022, including various supply chain disruptions, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and adverse weather effecting crops, ofi is progressing well towards creating a more resilient supply chain by making impact at the intersection of farmer livelihoods and the environment.

Vivek Verma, CEO Coffee at ofi, welcomes the report as evidence of progress towards ofi’s goals.

“I’m proud of the positive steps we’ve taken towards all four of our focus areas, increasing our sustainability programs to reach 117,242 farmers, implementing 14 education remediation plans in high-risk origins to mitigate the risk of child labor, and bringing land equivalent to 47,000 football fields under regenerative agricultural practices. International Coffee Day is a timely opportunity to reflect on this progress and its importance in supporting the farmers whose livelihoods depend on our love for coffee. So whether you’re enjoying your morning cappuccino or an indulgent spiced cold-brew, let’s acknowledge the millions of people that bring our favourite beverage from crop to cup.”

Ongoing programs provide dedicated support to producer partners in agronomy training and technical assistance, improving overall productivity and increasing average income. Under ofi’s 2025 environmental targets to regenerate coffee landscapes and reduce deforestation, over 2.4M non-coffee trees have been planted, deforestation remediation plans implemented in 75% of identified highrisk areas, and soil health improved over 34,000 hectares.

The report also details the successful deployment of ofi’s digital tools to access data, reduce carbon footprints and build a more secure supply chain. With growing requirements for traceability and environmental due diligence, AtSource - ofi’s sustainability management system - allows customers access to verified and data-based insights so they can manage and improve performance and impact in their supply chains.

Verma adds optimistically that the overall industry commitment to reducing carbon emissions aligns with ofi’s Coffee LENS progress for safeguarding the future of coffee. “This increased appetite for improving our collective coffee footprint is particularly encouraging with the urgent need to build more resilient and regenerative supply chains. And now that we’re at the halfway mark towards our 2025 goals, this is also an opportunity to point forward to what we need to build on under our strategy for even greater impact by 2030.”

Relaunch: Liqueur du Grand Saint Bernard

The Swiss distillery Morand is relaunching its oldest liqueur. It will be presented for the first time at Bar Convent Berlin, the largest trade fair for the bar and beverage industry, from 9 to 11 October 2023.

Liqueur du Grand Saint Bernard, available in two varieties, is a new edition of the company’s oldest recipe, known only to family members to this day. It was given to the distillery’s founder by a canon at the beginning of the 20th century. Swiss graphic designer Karim Merzoug has given the bottle a new look, resulting in a redesigned label that blends tradition and modernity.

The traditional recipe for the liqueur was personally handed to Louis Morand, who founded his eponymous distillery in 1889, over 100 years ago by one of the canons of the Grand Saint Bernard Hospice. Morand wrote it down in a black notebook, which has remained securely locked away to this day, accessible exclusively to family members. The liqueur is distilled in antique stills, which have been operated by successive generations of family members. Currently, members of the fourth and fifth generation already maintain the art

Consumers are increasingly seeking to personalise their home-brewed coffee and replicate the quality of specialty coffee enjoyed in restaurants and coffee shops. Now they can achieve just that, knowing that the syrup they are using is not only good for them but also for the planet.

of distilling according to old family tradition. The secret original recipe is a refined composition of 30 plants. That much we can say: The roundness of Yellow 41% Liqueur du Grand Saint Bernard is attributed to honey, and the golden colour is derived from saffron threads. The liqueur is also available in a green version with completely different characteristics: Green 51% Liqueur Grand Saint Bernard is a higherproof version and contains not only the 30 plants of the original recipe but additional plants such as the Valais mugwort, creating the perfect balance between a powerful flavour, intensity, and the roundness of the honey

The product will be available to consumers at the end of the year.

Find out what drives the beverage industry worldwide.

Do you want to keep an eye on current topics along the entire process chain of the beverage industry? Then you can‘t miss BrauBeviale in Nuremberg.

The international community of the beverage industry will meet here from 28 – 30 November 2023. Be part of it!

www.braubeviale.de/en

28 – 30 November 2023
Nuremberg, Germany

BrauBeviale in top form

After a 4-year break in its exhibition schedule

BrauBeviale in Nuremberg will start again from November 28-30, 2023.

With a diverse range of exhibitors, precisely designed special areas and a broadly-based support program, visitors from the beer, soft drinks and mineral water industries, as well as from the wine, sparkling wine and spirits industries, will find practical solutions for their operational requirements in process technology, filling and packaging, or in logistics.

At a press conference in Milan, the show organizers presented their program for this year and drew a close connection between the challenging economic environment and the clear responses offered by the show’s overall line-up. The organizers used three key topics to illustrate the current challenges in the beverage industry: In many segments, for example, consumption figures, and correspondingly production figures for many beverages, had not returned to 2019 levels even by the end of 2022. Furthermore, a shortage of appropriately skilled workers in the catering industry was contributing to the fact that out-of-home consumption in particular still had some catching up to do.

Challenging economic environment

There is always movement within the industry, and thus the number of breweries in Europe, with an increase of 614 during 2022, further demonstrates that forward-looking entrepreneurs continue to assess the potential in the European beverage market very positively. At the same time however, the enormous cost increases, which according to a survey by the German Brewers’ Association (Deutscher Brauer Bund), have resulted in a 140 percent increase in the price of new glass, a 135 percent increase in the price of carbon dioxide, and a 150 percent increase in the price of brewing malt, demand a high degree of flexibility in the procurement policies of beverage producers and breweries. In addition, the requirements recently published in the EU’s draft Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWR) bring new uncertainties, particularly with regard to the development of reusable packaging strategies in Europe.

Solutions at BrauBeviale

Beverage producers and brewers, as well as winemakers, are therefore

well advised to establish a solid basis for their investment programs by means of gathering comprehensive information on raw materials, new machinery, production solutions, or logistics concepts. BrauBeviale offers a comprehensive range of products and services for the entire process chain in nine halls covering approx. 40,000 m² of exhibition space with around 900 exhibitors.

Alone 130 suppliers for packaging, closures, labelling, and secondary packaging will show their solutions for the tasks involved in productappropriate and efficient packaging.

The pressing question of carbon dioxide supply, for example, will be addressed by 17 suppliers and answered with state-of-the-art solutions. Alternatively – raw material topics: answers to questions about securing raw materials can be discussed with a total of 88 suppliers. The product database is already online and can be accessed by all users in the beverage and brewing industry to obtain the comprehensive supplier information even before visiting the event. From July 25, the ticket store will be open so that planning for a visit to BrauBeviale can be easily started online.

Support program for all visitor groups

New in this year’s exhibition portfolio – around 70 percent of exhibitors will include an offering for the customer group winegrowers – is a special show on grape processing and cellar management in Hall 4A. In this way, the exhibition also offers interesting stimuli for operators in wine production. “We are investing in this special area,” explains Andrea Kalrait, Executive Director of BauBeviale, “in order to demonstrate that the range of products and services at BrauBeviale is very broadly diversified and that a visit is therefore also worthwhile for those in the wine industry.” The supporting program will again cover a wide range of topics: “Sustainability in the light of climate and market changes”, “Industry Hotspots Future” to “Corporate profiling via sustainability”, to “Containers, Systems under Pressure” and on to “Raw Materials” demonstrate how brewers and beverage producers or even vintners can deal with the current challenges. The Forum BrauBeviale in Hall 1 is the address for visitors who want to find impulses for this. Furthermore, this is also the address for all visitors with a focus on marketing: “Branding the Brain” or sustainability in brand communication are the current hot topics for all interested parties.

But also the special areas with the Expert Forum, an exhibitor platform in Hall 4 or the Logistics Lounge, (also in Hall 4) will provide for knowledge enhancement and stimulating exchange. With the Craft Drinks Area in Hall 6, BauBeviale once again addresses a broad field of brewers and focuses on individual beer types and ingredients. The perfect place for beer connoisseurs or those who want to become one is the European Beer Star – this year in its 20th iteration. Over 500 breweries from 44 countries are sending entries.

The brewers will showcase their brewing skills and face the critical palate of the jury.

The wide-ranging supporting program, which is free of charge for all visitors, will be available to view online at braubeviale.com from September.

The contribution of processing equipment to cooked meat products

Selecting the right processing equipment can be the difference between a highly successful cooked meat product and one which vanishes without a trace in what is a highly competitive market. One of the keys to success is consistency in the quality of the product and that is where reliability and controllability of the processing equipment is crucial.

Interfood offers a wide range of equipment used in the production of cooked meat products, from stand-alone machines to fully integrated processing lines. The KK Universal-Circulation System from Maurer Atmos is a good example, offering solutions specifically developed for the controlled cooking of products in the shortest possible time. It is characterised by its high production capacity at a low investment cost. The KK is available with data capture systems to give full visibility of the process graphs on a large user-friendly HMI and networked to a workstation. Heated by steam or electricity, the equipment can be easily integrated into the factory. Loading and unloading doors are interlocked to ensure the high and low care production areas are segregated from each other. In addition to cooking, the KK system can also pasteurise, with the option available to add the process of showering with cold water. The machine requires only a small footprint, with the potential for tailored solutions to specific requirements. Alongside the KK, Interfood also offers the Maurer Atmos ASR range. Known as the ‘all-round-system’, the ASR is an ideal solution for smoking and cooking products, offering a wide variety of flavours and colours.

Roasting is also a process associated with cooked meat products and for such applications Interfood offers the Afoheat Select Infrared Roaster. A continuous roaster, the Select combines the efficiency

afforded by a combination of gas-fired infrared radiation and convective heat. It is ideal for developing surface colour and flavour, or for setting glazes and coatings on a wide range of meats including slicing logs, poultry, burgers and sausages (as well as seafood, vegetable, plant-based or bakery products if required). Customisation is at the core of the design concept, with each machine designed and built to meet the specific customer requirements.

It can be used for roasting and searing of both bulk and convenience foods, and can work with products in their raw, cooked, chilled or frozen states. In addition to operating as a stand-alone solution, it can also be integrated into a continuous thermal processing line. The control system adjusts the power and fan speeds of each burner independently to ensure precision results, with the capability to roast and sear on up to four sides simultaneously with minimal loss in yield and reduced energy costs compared to batch systems.

For applications which require grill marking, there is the Afoheat Select Grill Marker. This enables the application of authentic chargrill stripes to a wide range of meat products to achieve significant shelfappeal. It can be integrated with the Infrared Roaster and the Afoheat Select Flame Searer to create a single unit for combined grilling and bar marking.

Why Lean Manufacturing Projects Fail Tried Implementing Lean with Disappointing Results?

If so, you will doubtless join the growing band of disappointed manufacturers who failed to achieve their objectives or even see any significant savings.

In research for this article, I was shocked to find the extent of dissatisfaction with IT projects, including digital transformation and continuous improvement. One site claimed that the percentage of successful projects was between 5% and 30%. Can it really be that, by implication, between 70% and 95% of projects fail?

The most encouraging report that I could find was that at least 70% of projects fail!

These depressing statistics bring no satisfaction for us, even though we probably compete with many of those IT suppliers. In our view, one failed project is one too many. Each failure is bad enough as a single entity, especially for the hapless customer whose expectations have not been satisfied, but collectively, it damages confidence in all IT projects and in all companies offering bona fide ‘solutions’, often to complex manufacturing problems.

As we travel around, in the wake of others’ system failures, we can perhaps be forgiven for imagining that a competitor’s failure creates another valuable opportunity for us. Whilst this may be true, especially if the potential and disappointed customer is still keen to solve a problem; but it also creates doubt, disillusionment and distrust which naturally makes the prospect increasingly concerned about trusting any potential supplier.

SO, WHY DO PROJECTS FAIL?

Not an exhaustive list, just a few of the most common causes:

• Lack of Planning

• Disconnected Management

• Lack of Consistency

• Lack of Resource

• Lack of Commitment

• Lack of Engagement

• Expecting Too Much Too Soon

• Lack of Direction

• Unsupportive Business Partner/Systems Supplier.

It would not be helpful to go through each of these in turn, especially as so many are obvious, but I would encourage any company, beginning its lean journey, or even restarting after a past failure, to carefully evaluate the list and ensure that none of these ‘showstoppers’ are or become appropriate.

SMALL BEGINNINGS CAN LEAD TO LARGE IMPROVEMENTS

Many who have seen rapid successful outcomes will confirm that any ‘quick wins’ are often due more to luck than judgement. The improvements more often start small and then gradually build over time, which is obviously why persistence and patience are crucial to success, as is total support from ‘the top’.

Lack of a clear plan or goals is one of the biggest problems. If a company knows they have to improve to stay in business or to drive up profits, they may panic into trying to do everything better, all at once.

Without a plan or clearly defined goals, any improvements are better than none, but they may not be what the company needs or hopes for. Therefore, getting together a performance improvement team (in a bigger company, of course, several teams may be created simultaneously), where the team must have a leader and they must have a clear set of objectives. Each team member must be clear in their own role and the whole team must have the unwavering support of the CEO or other appropriate Board member. Without clearly defined objectives, shared by the team and fully backed by management, it is doubtful that any substantial, lasting achievements can be achieved.

Success Factors for Change Success Factors for Change

What I find fascinating about this is that all these success factors are just as necessary for lasting beneficial change today as they were several decades ago. Many ‘Quality Fads’ have come and gone during those decades, but the simple truths remain. Sustained quality performance and improvement rarely happens by luck or coincidence, but by understanding, consistency, persistence and patience. Any company that looks for a quick fix or the elusive silver bullet will be sorely disappointed.

NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN

Take heart! Reluctance to change is nothing new. In fact, it is worth remembering a quote from Niccolò Machiavelli, the author of The Prince, more than 500 years ago.

The redacted version goes something like this:

‘There is nothing more difficult than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. The innovator makes enemies of those who prospered under the old order and only lukewarm support from those who would prosper under the new.’

The support is so often only lukewarm because the ‘supporters’ distrust change, unless they have seen the benefits through experience. Therein lies the rub. How can you experience the results of change without making the commitment to change?

We’re here to help.

In the aftermath of PPMA, we will still be here to help you deliver against your own change priorities.

Embracing Innovation: Tennent’s Brewery Partners with SEEPEX

Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery is Scotland’s oldest brewery, tracing its roots back to the 1500s. Since its establishment in 1885, it has consistently produced award-winning brews. The brewery’s fascinating story revolves around Hugh Tennent, who defied skeptics in 1885 to create Tennent’s Lager, initially dubbed a ‘madman’s dream’ by newspapers. Today, Tennent’s Lager dominates the Scottish market, accounting for every second pint of lager consumed in the country.

UPGRADING BREWERY OPERATIONS FOR ENHANCED EFFICIENCY

As part of their process, spent grain is transferred from two mash filters that drain the spent grain to 24%DS. Originally, the spent grain fell from the mash filters into an expeller unit from where it was conveyed over 64m with a 20m elevation to the silo. With the expeller, the grain transfer took ~90 minutes after each brew and used 1,125Nm³ of air.

Tennent’s Lager, part of leading drinks manufacturer and distributor C&C Group, is committed to a robust sustainability strategy, exemplified by ambitious carbon reduction targets. These targets aim to achieve a 35% reduction in scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030 and have been validated by the Science Based Target initiative.

In recent years Tennent’s has made significant investments in various carbon reduction projects, including carbon capture and anaerobic digestion plants. Additionally, Tennent’s has partnered with SEEPEX to improve energy efficiency in its spent grain transfer process, which is the most air intensive process on site.

IMPROVED EFFICIENCY, PRODUCTIVITY, AND ENERGY SAVINGS

Together with SEEPEX, Tennent’s explored the benefits of SEEPEX’s cutting-edge Smart Air Injection (SAI) technology. This groundbreaking solution combines an open hopper progressive cavity pump and pneumatic dense-phase conveying to efficiently transfer 15-40%DS spent grains, draff, and hops in plugs. Controlled air pulses enable seamless conveying over long distances.

SEEPEX established the optimum operation point with minimum air consumption to reduce the original air consumption and carbon footprint, and also assessed the energy efficiency in comparison with the initial system. SEEPEX was able to calculate all the consumptions eliminating the need to carry out a trial.

A PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY: SCOTTISH INDUSTRIAL ENERGY TRANSFORMATION FUND

The demonstrated energy efficiency from SEEPEX Smart Air Injection (SAI) enabled Tennent’s to access the Scottish Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (SIETF), designed to support the development and deployment of technologies that enable businesses with high energy use to transition to a low carbon future. Through this, the government funded 30% of the project.

DECREASED AIR USE AND TRANSFER TIMES

Air consumption has decreased by an impressive 56%, dropping from ~1,125Nm³ to 500-700Nm³ per brew. Furthermore, there is a decrease in spent grain transfer time associated with the SAI system. The reduction in air use contributes to Tennent’s carbon reduction plan by reducing electricity use within the site.

SEAMLESS MAINTENANCE AND UNINTERRUPTED OPERATION

As Tennent’s embraces the future of brewing, it benefits from SEEPEX’s plannedCARE package. This comprehensive service ensures proactive, on-time planned pump maintenance, guaranteeing uninterrupted operation. Importing Food and Drink from the EU – Update

Brexit, arguably, impacted the food and drink sector more than any other. I know that many in the industry have struggled to maintain supplies over the last few years and there were significant losses, with food having to be dumped due to the delays.

This is to review the causes of some of the problems and the latest trade figures. I will also explain the action we’re taking to improve the situation

The immediate challenges of Brexit, which caused long delays and led to the destruction of food produce, had appeared to have eased until the food shortages earlier this year. These shortages were primarily caused by the weather, the economy and the war in Ukraine, but when supplies are low, and the home market is clamouring to take all your produce, there is no incentive for EU traders to take on the additional complications and risks of exporting, unless you’re tied to a contract or are able to sell at a huge premium.

Bureaucracy, whilst an additional burden during ‘normal’ times, consequently, becomes a barrier when times are more difficult. Research carried out among more than a thousand UK traders for Flanders Investment & Trade in May 20231 found that nearly 74% of UK companies agree that they had been forced to consider alternative markets due to the bureaucracy involved in trading with the EU post Brexit.

In Flanders we’re very keen to solve the problems as we’re one of the UK’s closest neighbours. Flanders is the northern region of Belgium that includes the key ports of Antwerp-Bruges, Ostend and North Sea Port (Ghent). These ports are key routes for trade across the EU.

Trade between Britain and Flanders has been picking up. Britain imported 18% more food from Flanders in 2022 than the previous

year, and there was a massive 40% increase in the import of milling products and a 37% increase in the import of oils and fats. However, these rises have been driven by unusual external facts, such as the war in Ukraine and the weather. We don’t expect the rise to continue.

One action we’re taking to boost relations is to hold our first major show, Flanders’ Finest Flavours which is taking place in October. Exhibitors will include artisanal beer, premium gin, spirit brands, organic chocolate, dried meats and keto snacks.

The shortages in February, however, demonstrated just how important it was to reduce the bureaucratic burden of trade if we’re to maintain food supplies. We’ve been working on the problem for some time and in June 2023, Flanders launched Gateway2 Britain. The application will require traders to fill out one dataset online, which is then automatically shared with all the relevant logistics and supply chain partners. The aim is to make trade between Flanders and Britain as frictionless as possible. We believe it will make your life a lot easier.

Cooling on gas –cool operator cuts carbon and cost with Ecogen

Ferytrans has returned to Hultsteins for a repeat order of Ecogen systems which, connected to 6 new Scania CNG tractors, will power its current trailer refrigeration units and cut carbon emissions.

Managing Director, Feri Lazar said, “Sustainability and carbon reduction are key drivers for our customers. These gas-powered tractors will reduce our carbon emissions by around 80%. Plus, by fitting Ecogen to run the trailer fridges on electric, we will further reduce carbon emissions by around 17 tonnes per vehicle combination per year.”

Ferytrans is a dedicated provider of temperature-controlled transport and owner of BigFoot Logistics. Based in Southampton, the two companies operate 40 modern Scania tractor units and 65 high-specification dual temperature trailers. They work for major retailers and brands including Amazon, Tesco, and Pork Farms. The new CNG Scanias will be put to work for their customer, Lidl.

“Ecogen Cost Saver is a sustainable and retrofittable refrigeration solution,” says Graham Usher, Managing Director, Hultsteins, UK and Ireland. “It allows operators to run their trailer fridge units on electric, thereby cutting carbon emissions by around

80%, DPM by 98% and NOx by 400%. It also reduces R&M on the fridge diesel engine and cuts running costs.”

Ecogen is an electric-hydraulic drive system that transforms diesel fridge units into electric operation when coupled to the tractor. It uses an engine PTO from the tractor engine to generate a constant 400V of electric to run the built-in electric motor in the fridge during transit. Hultsteins also provide a bespoke battery pack to keep the trailer fridge running when parked.

“By running the fridge on electric,” adds Feri Lazar, “Ecogen also helps minimise noise during deliveries, which is particularly beneficial in residential areas. The combination of Scania CNG tractors and Hultsteins Ecogen provide the optimum sustainable solution for refrigerated transport.”

Ferytrans have purchased the Ecogen systems and calculate ROI to be around 18 months per system.

Hultsteins UK also offers Ecogen Cost Saver on an operating lease for as little as £10 a day.

Construction Progressing on Major Cold Store Expansion

Magnavale, one of the UK’s leading providers of temperature-controlled storage, has announced that its development currently taking place at its Chesterfield cold storage facility has made significant progress and is on track to be completed in late 2024.

Since breaking ground in February 2023, construction of Magnavale’s Chesterfield cold storage expansion has progressed smoothly. As of August 2023, the company reports that the steel framework is now complete, and the installation of insulated wall and roof panels is also nearing completion.

Over the month of September, the construction crew will be finishing the roof membrane and intumescent painting of the new steelwork. Concurrently, work will commence on the small plant rooms and internal services including electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and other systems.

On completion, the expansion will add a significant 25,000 pallet positions to the cold stores’ existing capacity of 44,000, bringing the total pallet capacity of the facility to 69,000, making it one of the largest cold stores in the area.

This expansion will not only accommodate the increasing volumes of Magnavale’s existing customers but also open doors to new customers wanting to utilise Magnavale’s temperature-controlled facilities and value-added services.

The facility features one of the most comprehensive portfolios of value-added services, encompassing, blast freezing, microwave uptempering and contract packing. Coupled with its strategic location, just off the M1, Magnavale Chesterfield is extremely desirable for food manufacturers that wish to cut unnecessary cost, risk, and complexity from their cold chain.

The Eco-Friendly and cost-effective advantages of online machinery auctions in Food Production

In the quest for sustainable and cost-effective solutions, the food production industry is increasingly turning to online machinery auctions as a preferred method for acquiring essential equipment. Beyond the immediate financial benefits, businesses are recognizing the environmental advantages of this modern approach, aligning with the industry’s growing commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Reducing Environmental Footprint Through Reuse

One of the key eco-friendly benefits of online machinery auctions lies in the principle of reuse. Rather than opting for brand-new equipment, businesses can find high-quality, pre-owned machinery through auctions. This approach significantly reduces the demand for new manufacturing processes, raw materials, and the energy associated with producing brand-new machinery.

Minimizing Waste in the Circular Economy

The circular economy emphasizes the importance of keeping resources in use for as long as possible. Online machinery auctions perfectly embody this principle by extending the lifecycle of industrial equipment. By participating in auctions, businesses actively contribute to minimizing waste and promoting a more circular and sustainable food production supply chain.

Lowering Carbon Footprint in Equipment Acquisition

The traditional process of procuring machinery often involves extensive travel for site visits, negotiations, and inspections

Online machinery auctions cut down on the need for physical travel, reducing the associated carbon footprint. This aligns with global efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and supports businesses in their journey toward more sustainable operations.

Sustainable Sourcing of Equipment

The transparency provided by online machinery auctions plays a vital role in sustainable sourcing. Detailed information and inspection opportunities allow businesses to make informed decisions about the environmental impact of the equipment they are acquiring. This transparency fosters a culture of responsible sourcing, ensuring that businesses choose machinery with a lower ecological footprint.
