Yorkshire language company makes Sunday Times list of top employers

Language is Everything has been named in the prestigious Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2024.

It is the first time the Hull-based translation and interpreting company has entered the awards, which grades companies based on feedback from employees.

The company has been ranked in the top 100 in the ‘small organisation’ category following analysis of a survey completed anonymously by staff in which it scored ‘excellent’ in all areas. Highlights included a 98% score for staff pride, and 95% for average happiness and confidence in management.

The full list of winning UK companies was revealed on May 12 in ten different categories.

Language is Everything CEO Carolyn Johnson MBE said that she was thrilled and that the award was a great way to measure how well the company was doing in nurturing its people. “We do our best to support everyone’s growth and wellbeing, and this high-profile, national accolade provides an excellent method of measuring how well we are doing and how our people really feel about working here.

“We get to see the survey results with action plans to make improvements and changes, which is

really helpful as we always strive to get better at everything we do.

“I want to thank all of our fantastic colleagues for contributing to us winning this amazing award.”

Language is Everything has notched up a number of employer awards in recent years including being named in the top 100 best companies to work for and, and the 3rd best workplace for women by Great Place to Work.

It has resisted the growing trend towards automated and AI language solutions by choosing to focus on delivering the highest quality services in person, which Carolyn Johnson believes is key to continued growth and success and essential when helping people to communicate in other languages.

“We take advantage of new technology to improve what we do, but we are people focused and our services will always be powered by people,” she said.

Over the past year, the company has experienced growth through new clients and providing enhanced services to existing customers. It is highly active in the charitable and public sectors working with local authorities throughout the UK and charities including Macmillan, the Stroke Association, Turning Point, and the NSPCC.

The privately owned business works with around 400 loyal linguists speaking more than 120 languages and has been providing translation and interpreting services for three decades, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022.

HullBID assembles top speakers for Biz Week highlight

HullBID has announced a trio of top speakers for its Inspiring People dinner which has become established as a highlight of Humber Business Week.

Natasha Barley, Paul Anderson and David Kilburn, who are all well known in business but each with a very different day job, will step up at The Deep on Wednesday June 5 to talk to an audience of regional business leaders about their lives and careers.

Natasha is the CEO of the Sailors’ Children’s Society, a Hull-based national charity supporting families of seafarers in times of crisis such as a bereavement, diagnosis of an illness or family breakdown. Natasha has worked in the charity sector for 11 years and was in education prior to that having worked internationally teaching in Canada, China, and Thailand.

Paul became Chief Constable of Humberside in 2023 and has been an officer for over 33 years, with experience across the ranks from community and investigative posts through to specialist operations. Paul has continued the force’s remarkable journey from being in special measures just six years ago to achieving an “outstanding” rating in six out of nine categories in a report released last November by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

David founded MKM Building Supplies in 1995, alongside close friend Peter Murray, and has grown the business to more than

100 branches across the UK. He still plays an active role in the company today and also uses his significant platform to help influence and nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. David received a CBE in 2023 in recognition of his services to the construction industry and charity.

Kathryn Shillito, HullBID Executive Director, said: “Our Inspiring People dinner has become one of the big attractions of Humber Business Week and we are delighted this year to present three very individual and highly regarded speakers from the private, public and charity sectors, who will entertain and inspire.

“Natasha, Paul and David are all prominent, successful and engaging figures with some fascinating stories to tell.”

The dinner will take place from 6.45pm until 10.30pm. Admission is free and priority will be given to businesses located within the Hull Business Improvement District (BID), however additional tickets may be available on a reserve list for non-BID members.

Great ideas deserve great support

As a family-owned business founded by John Williams in 1985, Victor Finance started life as a brokerage company pledged to support local businesses. Today, it has grown into one of the leading independent asset finance brokers in the UK, a factor that, without a doubt, can be attributed to customer referrals and the team’s unique approach…

This year began with a proud moment for the Victor Finance team and the announcement of surpassing the £1billion lending threshold. A milestone which followed in the wake of the acquisition of East Yorkshire Asset Finance a year prior.

With a personable approach to customer service that cannot be underestimated, as well as the business’s push to introduce unique services such as its own lending book, the award-winning Brigg-based firm now works across all areas of the UK within a wide variety of industry.

In addition to their outstanding client service, Victor Finance has also shown a remarkable ability to adapt to changing market conditions and navigate complex transactions with finesse. Just this year alone numerous refinance transactions have been written, which have released vital funds back to customers’ businesses.

“Since reaching and subsequently going beyond the £1 billion lending milestone, the biggest impact for us on a daily basis has been the shift in the economy,” Barry Nicol, Operations Manager at Victor Finance, said. “Despite uncertainty across the economy, we have been supporting clients through the challenges presented.

“No matter your position in the marketplace, 2024 so far has undoubtedly thrown up some curveballs. But as industry experts, the team can support every business’s unique

requirements - from expansion in terms of growth or workforce to consolidation, refinancing and exit strategies.

“We’re seeing many sectors remain buoyant despite the challenges being presented. By monitoring the outlook across the market, we can calculate how the economy will impact our clients, and to what extent, and provide the right advice.”

Ever since the first days of Victor Finance, everything the team invests, from its time to its money, has come with the caveat that it helps everyone at Victor Finance as well as their customers, strive to be better and go further.

“We approach what can be a very complicated industry to those not working within it, to educate and inspire,” explained Barry. “Every decision we make is done to support the individual needs of a client. They are number one to us. They’re the reason that we exist and the sole reason that we have been successful. We always go the extra mile and pride ourselves on finding a way to say, ‘yes’ when our competitors will say ‘no’.”

Diversifying its offering to benefit customers has been intrinsic to Victor Finance’s journey and evolution over the years. Setting itself apart from competitors by continually asking questions, constantly pushing the envelope, and forever getting more involved with clients to further understand their needs and requirements.

A fantastic example of this is Victor Finance’s Own Book Lending. A service unlike any other that competitors offer, through its Own Book Lending, Victor Finance can offer the full range of finance deals but as the team does its own underwriting, Victor Finance can also create opportunities that no one else can.

The last year or so has seen Victor Finance as a small business hit the super-charge button, focus on its goals, and put significant development plans in place to secure the future the team sees for Victor Finance – a business and employer of choice.

For the business, that means the directors have been working to put plans in place –such as the development of Victor Finance HQ, which will also benefit the team – as well as expanding the business by acquisition:

“Making allies in business, collaborating, and working in synergy, in our eyes is the only way to strive to be more proactive, forward-thinking, and innovative in today’s sometimes brutal corporate environment,” continued Barry. “We firmly believe that together we are stronger.”

Commodore to tell CHAMBER EXPO Lunch guests how Royal Navy is protecting international trade and UK interests

WITH just two weeks to go before Chamber Expo 2024 opens its doors, we are pleased to announce Commodore Thomas Knowles from the Royal Navy will be our keynote speaker.

Commodore Knowles will talk about the Navy’s role in keeping our shipping lanes open and defending the UK’s interests at home and abroad, its work in helping to prevent the Houthi attacks on commercial and naval shipping in the Red Sea and maintaining our international trade and supply chains, which, as we have seen, affect business and lead to raw material shortages, price rises and inflation in the UK when they are interrupted by international conflicts.

Commodore Knowles will also talk about the Navy’s wider role, in the Black Sea monitoring the war between Ukraine and Russia, its humanitarian tasks in the Middle East, keeping shipping lanes open in the South China Sea, Britain’s new aircraft carriers and how the Royal Navy Reserve fits into the bigger picture on the global stage.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of what promises to be a fascinating insight into the modern-day role of the Royal Navy.

The lunch is free for Chamber Expo visitors to attend, but places are strictly limited, so you must book to reserve your seat. rb.gy/6yl0v7 Chamber Expo is always an integral part of Humber Business Week – and this year we are joining forces with the Ministry of Defence to host their Military Expo.

We will also be hosting our second International Trade Conference as part of Chamber Expo 2024 on Tuesday, June 4th, and this year’s venue will be the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel, Willerby, Hull, HU10 6EB.

The Chamber Motor Show is also charging ahead and will provide a display of largely electric cars and vans in the outside space, alongside a display of military vehicles, which is sure to mobilise lots of attention. Among the motor dealers confirmed so far are Evans Halshaw Citroen and Vauxhall Hull, who will be bringing along some of their latest models, including the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and a Vivaro Van, while Citroen will be represented by an e-C4 and an e-Berlingo van. Other dealers confirmed so far include Stratstone BMW and Mini, Riverside Motor Group with a Polestar EV and Listers Mercedes-Benz.

Come and find out how the Reserves, or former military personnel can benefit you and your business. 150 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corp and the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Yorkshire and The Humber will be waiting to chat to any potential recruits, and we will also have some displays of the latest equipment inside the exhibition space.

Bookings are going well and can be made through the Chamber’s website rb.gy/ b06pk9 or by contacting David Hooper or Kay Hudson who will be happy to help – so don’t miss out, get yourself booked in today, or just turn up on the day and have a look around.

Chamber Expo 2024 hosts all kinds of

businesses from both banks of the Humber. We would like to thank our sponsors for their support with this year’s event, so special mentions go to AaGlobal which has supported the Expo since the firm expanded to the region, and Hull What’s On who are again partnering with us on this event.

This year’s standholders can look forward to a hot buffet lunch in the Brasserie and electricity is included in the price of the stand, while parking and entry to Chamber Expo 2024 will be complimentary.

The Chamber’s famous Free Expo Speed Networking is happening from 2.45pm in the City of Culture room, providing a great opportunity to meet some potential new customers from around the region.

Members and non-members alike are welcome to book a stand and everyone is invited to visit – you don’t have to be a Chamber member to exhibit, or to attend on the day. The Chamber’s ever-popular Expo, with its VIP Lunch, provides a great opportunity for networking and making introductions to potential suppliers of everything from cakes to vans.

So don’t miss out, book your stand now or call (01482) 324976 to speak with Kay or David, or email k.hudson@hull-humberchamber.co.uk with your requirements.

We are working with Hull What’s On to promote the event, so the sooner you get involved, the sooner your business might get a mention!

The Chamber President Kirk Akdemir welcomed guests to the event and commented on the nominations: “To be a shortlisted finalist is an achievement in itself and all those here tonight should be very proud. The quality and range of the nominations this year demonstrates the kudos of these Awards, the tenacity of business in these difficult times and the talent we have in the region across so many successful businesses. A night to celebrate for everyone.”

The theme of the evening was ‘The Lion King’ and professional performers from the London stage joined local students from Grimsby Institute and North Lindsey College in a fabulous After Dinner Show, kicked off by a display of Dwembe drumming from Grimsby Institute students. Offshore Wind Connections 2024

OWC highlights Humber’s role in “British success story”

The sell-out industry conference organised by Humber Marine & Renewables at the beginning of May brought the industry together in an offshore wind spectacular, with plans already gathering pace for OWC2025.

The two-day event in Hull city centre, with headline sponsorship from RWE, culminated in the Humber Renewables Awards, of which you can read more about elsewhere in the magazine.

Delegates took advantage of many networking opportunities, from the

RenewableUK Connect launch event that continued late into the evening on the first day, to the incidental meetings in the exhibitors’ area. Headline speakers combined with focused panel sessions curated by the Humber Offshore Wind Cluster and chaired by Dave Laister, resulted in informative, interesting and varied perspectives on the industry.

Humber Marine & Renewables chairman Iain Butterworth said that the conference, held at Doubletree by Hilton on May 1 & 2, was effective in creating a balance between celebrating success and examining current issues.

“The Humber has achieved global recognition for its success in offshore wind, but we cannot rest on our laurels and there is much to be addressed if we are to achieve long-term economic benefit and sustainability. Our expert panellists looked at some of the challenges and opportunities in useful detail covering diverse topics including infrastructure, finance, innovation, supply chain and skills.

“Tickets and exhibition space are already being snapped up for 2025, which is testament to the success of this year’s OWC,” he said.

OWC 2024 COMMERCE-INDUSTRY.CO.UK 08
Networking in full swing Under Secretary of State Andrew Bowie Ajai Ahluwalia, RenewableUK Iain Butterworth, Humber Marine & Renewables

Under Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Andrew Bowie said of the region in a video link to open the conference:

“If this is a British Success story, then the Humber is one of the main characters.”

Expecting the region to build on its contribution to UK deployment, he said the Humber would play a major role in the target of 50GW by 2030.

Hull City Council assistant director for economic development and regeneration Alex Codd said that offshore wind was ‘critical’ to the region with the real benefits coming from the thousands of high value jobs that have been created.

“We are pleased to host this event in the city. The journey for offshore wind started in 2010 when conversations started with Siemens Gamesa about a site for its blade factory on the Humber.”

Throughout the day, delegates switched between the exhibition hall and auditorium while gearing up for the awards night in the same venue.

More than 30 experts took part in the on-stage panel discussions and influential speakers provided information on significant developments including the conference keynote speaker Corrine Barry, RWE’s UK East Coast Director for Net Zero. Morten Holm from platinum sponsor Orsted, Andy Sykes from Siemens Gamesa and Chris Jenner from Outer Dowsing also took to the stage.

Closing the conference, Iain Butterworth added that the key to future success was to build on working together:

“If I had a £1 for every time the word collaboration was spoken at this event, I could retire. Let’s collaborate, let’s stay in touch.”

In addition to lead sponsor RWE, OWC 2024 secured platinum sponsorship from Orsted, gold sponsors Associated British Ports, Andrew Jackson Solicitors, Aquila, Bacon Engineering, Butterworth Marine, MMS Offshore Renewables, North Yorkshire Council and Pentagon Marine. Silver sponsors were Humber Freeport, Xocean and ORE Catapult with RSM sponsoring the networking drinks.

Support was also provided by Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, The Supply Chain Network, The Department for Business and Trade and RenewableUK.

Winners crowned at Humber Renewables Awards 2024

Winners of the 2024 Humber Renewables Awards used the stage to encourage the next generation to take the industry forward on a sparkling night of celebration.

A dozen years of recognition of the sector’s sensational role in helping regenerate the region were rung up as the event once again became a fitting finale to Humber Marine and Renewables’ Offshore Wind Connections conference.

Held at Hull’s DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel – a venue that the event heard “probably wouldn’t have been built had it not been for the emergence of offshore wind,” - 200 guests toasted standout stories uniting the Energy Estuary.

Camilla Carlbom Flinn was crowned Humber Renewables Champion, with her work to diversify the fourth generation family business and take the host organisation to a new level highlighted, as well as impressive ambassadorial duties with her proud Swedish heritage.

And RWE was named Medium to Large Business of the Year, recognising the huge commitments made to the region with skills programmes, vessel purchases and operations and maintenance expansion.

Its focus on the future workforce was embraced by many winners, with demand clear.

Long-term operator from Grimsby, Tidal Transit, won the Green Innovation Award, for its pioneering electric crew transfer vessel project, with a full retrofit of a diesel craft.

Leo Hambro, commercial director, said:

“I am delighted that after 12 years of working in the Humber, we are now creating a change that will not just last for another 12 years, but for generations. It will make a change, not just economically, but environmentally, reducing emissions.

“We are delighted to work out of Humber. The support we have found locally is second to none, the supply chain, the clients we work with directly are so supportive, and we feel like part of the family.”

Turning to requirements, he said: “We can’t do it on our own. We need mariners, there is a lack of them, and for tomorrow there is an even bigger problem. We need to engage with kids at any age to show them there isn’t just the opportunity to be a wind engineer, there are opportunities to work at sea, to create a full life career.”

One potential avenue to pursue is the work being done by the industry’s “town

centre billboard” - an inspiring and educational box park. Projekt Renewable Grimsby landed last year. As well as developing an immersive experience within repurposed shipping containers, it is to offer boat trips to near-shore wind farms this summer.

Taking the Engaging the Community Award, director Richard Askam, said: “The thing that made me the most pleased was that everyone in the room now knows a little bit more about Projekt Renewable.

Projekt Renewable is for everybody in that room so it is a nice symbiosis of what is needed. Alongside the innovation and investment, we need communication; to get kids to understand what it is they all do. Then they will take it on.”

A recent £100,000 Crown Estate investment into the project was also flagged.

“It is astonishing when you look at the seniority they have in the industry, and in the UK. It is UK Plc backing this project that happens to be in Grimsby but it is a UK problem of lack of awareness. We hope this will be number one, and The Crown Estate has intimated they want to have several of these around the country and that would be great for everyone.”

Excellence in Renewable Education, Skills and Training went to Hull College, with work on the vital home heating transition highlighted.

Robin Makey, assistant principal at Hull College, said: “It is fantastic recognition for the staff and the learners of the college, and it

is a great platform for us from which to continue developing the skills and enabling learners to thrive and go into this wonderful industry which will support our community and our world.

“We have a range of heat pumps installed, the first contained cylinder heat pump in the country, and it is wonderful for us to be able to show retrofitting of domestic appliances for everybody.”

Hull’s River Energy and Renewables Ltd was named Small Business of the Year having made major strides with the consultancy.

Frank Saunders, head of energy and renewables, said:

“It is excellent to be recognised for the hard work we have done as a small business, and a new entrant into the marketplace. It is testament to the amazing team that we have got, and all our great clients as well.”

Guy Hunter, co-founder and commercial director, added:

“We were traditionally a telecoms company but we moved into the energy space and brought people like Frank in with a wealth of knowledge in the industry and has helped us grow into it. Hopefully we can become a big player in it.”

Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult’s 5G Portal – a testbed for the latest technology to be deployed on wind farms, focused around Grimsby and the Lincolnshire Coast – won Best Renewable Energy Project. The living lab brings digital advances to the fore.

Nicola Robinson, business development manager at ORE Catapult, said:

“It is evidence that collaboration really does work. The partners have worked together to create something that benefits so much more than Grimsby alone.”

Katharine York, manager of ORE Catapult’s Grimsbybased Operations and Maintenance Centre of Excellence, added:

“It is about having facilities in Grimsby that mean people need and want to come here, the new technology, the things that make offshore wind farms run better and more efficiently, and more safely in future. Having Grimsby on the map with this sort of facility, can really start to do these things.”

11 HUMBER RENEWABLES AWARDS 2024 COMMERCE-INDUSTRY.CO.UK
Ryah Russell is presented with her Apprentice of the Year Award by Julian Cattermole, chief executive of sponsor Boston Energy

Surprise for Humber director named renewables champion

Camilla Carlbom Flinn was overwhelmed to have been named Humber Renewables Champion, having been blindsided by the judging panel she had been part of.

Her sterling work through a huge period of change for the regional group Humber Marine and Renewables – at a time when her own business was bought out – was a key consideration.

The intense element of surprise was clear, with comedic magician Ben Hanlin describing it as an ‘Ant & Dec’ style wind-up.

Camilla said:

It is quite overwhelming. This room is overflowing with people who I admire, I look up to and I respect, and to receive this when surrounded by so many amazing companies, amazing people and the future also of this region, with all these wonderful apprentices, it really is a surprise and really is an honour.”

Born in Cleethorpes, she studied international business management and broadcast journalism, with an early media career taking her to Paris, London and New York before she returned to Lincolnshire in 2008. Her father Anthony’s passing saw her take the helm of Carlbom Shipping, navigating the business into the burgeoning offshore wind market as a mainstay, coal, entered terminal decline.

It was later held up as a key supply chain partner by Orsted - the world leader in the sector.

Camilla went on to take on the roles of honorary consul for Sweden and Finland, chair of the Humber chapter of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and become a member of the Swedish Council in London, actively promoting business and cultural connections across the North Sea.

Presenting the award, HMR chair Iain Butterworth said:

“Work in renewables preceded her becoming a director, her role has included the successful merger between Team Humber Marine Alliance and Grimsby Renewable Partnership and she consistently supports its mission, members and directors.”

He added that she was “incredibly supportive” making “so many introductions locally, nationally and internationally,” in his first year in the top role. She has also played a “significant role” in a Department for Transport funding bid that “could mean a lot for the region,” Mr Butterworth added.

The family ships’ agency business, based in Stallingborough, was bought by Pentagon Freight Services in 2022, and she remains as a director.

Significant role in a DfT funding bid that could mean a lot for the region.

Orsted’s senior stakeholder adviser, Lauren Little, was named Humber Renewables Women of the Year. She was also full of admiration for the talent gathered to celebrate.

Asked how to encourage others into the sector, she said:

“It is ace. Look at all these amazing people I work with in this industry. There is so much opportunity no matter what you want to do, the world is your oyster and I am so privileged to work in it among all these amazing people.”

Grimsby-born she concluded her university studies with a thesis on the opportunity offshore wind would afford North East Lincolnshire. Now she’s written herself into the sector’s history.

“I am so delighted,” she said. “To write about it, to work in it, and to be nominated, I was so humbled. The town gets a hard time, but it really punches above its weight, it is a centre of expertise and excellence for operations and maintenance, and people need to recognise that. It is the opportunity it brings to children, young people, everybody, and that’s what’s the best bit about this industry.”

Corrine Barry, RWE’s East Coast director for net zero collected the big company prize.

She said:

“It really is fantastic for us to be acknowledged for all the hard work we are putting into the region, and for the community as well. We are absolutely thrilled to win this award.

“We are helping lead the way and blaze a trail with careers, education and skills, and helping people get a great opportunity in a great sector in the region.”

Referring back to Offshore Wind Connections, of which RWE was headline sponsor, Corrine added:

“We want more of what we have seen today. Cross-energy sector engagement and cross-supply chain engagement. Not just offshore wind, but the other energy sectors and opportunities like hydrogen and carbon capture, and other industries too. There is so much opportunity here.”

RWE’s Ryah Russell was named Apprentice of the Year too.

The Triton Knoll technician is already a STEM ambassador, mentor to newer apprentices and has returned to her sixth form and spoken to MPs in Westminster. She also recorded a video with the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, while having also supported recent recruitment.

She said:

“This means everything. I just wanted to do something to make a difference and develop. It makes me feel good to think what we are doing for the environment.”

Restoration work to well-known pub thanks to Levelling Up support

One of Hull’s most well-known pubs will undergo restoration improvements following support from Levelling Up Funding (LUF).

The Whittington & Cat on Commercial Road, opposite Hull Marina, has been granted £69,916.69 from Hull City Council’s government backed LUF allocation.

The money has been awarded to Whittington and Cat Limited to support restoration to the building’s exterior, which has fallen into poor condition.

Roof, brick and chimney repairs are all part of the project which help to not only restore the building, but to ensure that it is also watertight.

Works will also enable The Whittington & Cat to bring back into use vacant rooms which have been deemed unsafe due

to exterior damage, whilst also providing further employment opportunities as a result.

The estimate project costs are £167,199.05, meaning almost £100,000 of private capital is being invested.

Garry Taylor, assistant director for major projects, culture and place at the council, said:

“The Whittington & Cat is a popular and well-known pub in a prime location, alongside Hull Marina.

“The building requires some restoration works and I am pleased that the council has been able to support this project through LUF.”

More than £6m AI upskilling fund launched to help SMEs in law, design, HR and beyond to reap the benefits of new tech

From 1st May, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can bid for a share of £6.4 million to help train their workforce to use artificial intelligence and in turn boost productivity and efficiency.

Sectors set to benefit include law, accountancy, scientific research and human resources, with the UK Government making up to £10,000 available for each business so they can embrace cutting edge and efficiency boosting new technology.

SMEs in these areas will be able to tap into the power of AI to streamline tasks, boost productivity, and drive growth. This could include accountants using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to draft documents, develop new software which could help to tackle fraud, and legal professionals harnessing the power of AI to analyse lengthy documents such as contracts to provide concise summaries, freeing up time to focus on other critical areas.

By adopting the enormous potential of AI technologies, SMEs across the country will be able to not only improve productivity and drive down costs, but to devote more time to identifying new areas of growth which will deliver new and improved services for consumers.

Expected to support around 2,000 SMEs across the country, businesses employing under 250 staff can now apply for the support, which will see successful applicants reimbursed for up to 50% of the cost of investment in AI skills training.

The move is to future-proof these businesses and incentivise investment in AI skills to ensure they retain a competitive edge through increased productivity and reduced costs, as they begin to integrate AI into their operations - building a pool of technological talent alongside supporting employee growth and development.

Whilst human supervision, judgement, creativity and empathy remain vital requirements in the workplace, augmenting AI into monotonous tasks like inputting data and filling out paperwork can increase speed and efficiency and play a major part in increasing business productivity.

Delivered through the UK Government’s Flexible AI Upskilling Fund, the pilot launched today will support SMEs in the Professional and Business Services (PBS) sector, with SMEs encouraged to apply between now and 31 May for grant funding to deliver training before March 2025.

Businesses specialising in professional services such as law, accounting and market research, alongside those providing business services such as HR, administration and leasing consumer goods are already seeing some of the benefits AI can bring to their day-to-day operations. This includes analysing large volumes of text, answering customer service queries and generating images and text for a variety of applications, including advertising campaigns, contracts and blog posts.

AI is also having a huge impact in specialised areas like drafting legal documents for law firms and creating virtual renderings for architects.

While smaller enterprises often acknowledge the benefits AI can bring to business operations, many require support when it comes to identifying the training employees should undertake to suit business needs.

The AI Skills for Business Framework, also launching today, will help businesses to grip the huge opportunities AI has to offer, driving innovation and future-proofing their workforce.

With the support of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Innovate UK and The Alan Turing Institute have developed this new framework for businesses, to identify the skills and knowledge their employees might need to use AI in the workplace and make the most of emerging technologies.

Together these new initiatives will help to grow the economy by encouraging small and medium businesses to embrace the technologies of the future.

The Flexible AI Upskilling Fund is just one part of the government’s comprehensive offer for SMEs in the UK. The Government has also rolled out

the ‘Help to Grow’ campaign, led by the Department for Business and Trade, which brings together the support and advice available to help businesses start, grow and succeed.

The Government is backing British businesses and making 2024 the year of SMEs. Complementary to the new initiatives launched today, the Help to Grow: Management and Help to Grow: Management Essentials programmes are improving leadership and management skills for small and medium businesses.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said:

“Businesses of all sizes and across all sectors, from architecture to law and HR to advertising, are identifying the huge benefits that AI can bring in helping staff boost their productivity while cutting business costs.

“I have launched this new pilot to help SMEs interested in AI adoption make it a reality by contributing towards the cost of upskilling their employees – ultimately increasing efficiency so companies can retain a competitive edge in an increasingly digital world.”

- Unlocking Farmer Profits with England’s

Innovative Biodiversity Net Gain Rules

England’s latest environmental regulations are not just about preserving nature—they’re opening new revenue streams for the nation’s farmers and land managers. With the introduction of the Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements, the agricultural landscape is set to transform, offering lucrative opportunities for those ready to embrace this green revolution.

From April 2024, all development projects requiring planning permission will need to demonstrate how they will achieve a BNG of at least 10%. This rule will extend to include all nationally significant infrastructure projects starting in November 2025.

If unable to meet the BNG requirements on the development site itself, developers must seek additional biodiversity improvements off-site. This typically involves forming 30-year legal agreements with farmers or other land managers to create or enhance habitats elsewhere.

BNG isn’t just a win for wildlife; it’s a potential windfall for the agricultural sector. Farmers can now tap into this demand by generating and selling what are termed ‘biodiversity units.’

What are biodiversity units?

Biodiversity units are the currency in this new ecological economy. Determined by factors like habitat size, quality, and location, these units can be accrued by enhancing land to support more diverse ecosystems. Once registered on a national biodiversity register managed by Natural England, these units can be traded to developers needing to meet BNG requirements.

For farmers, the benefits are twofold. Not only can they earn from cultivating crops,

but now they can also profit from cultivating biodiversity. Payments for biodiversity units might come as upfront sums or as recurring annual revenues, often surpassing traditional farming subsidies. It’s a compelling add-on to the farm’s income stream, potentially more profitable than some current agricultural subsidies.

Tax implications to watch out for With new opportunities come new complexities. The tax implications of trading in biodiversity units are still murky. Questions linger about whether lands under BNG contracts will qualify for inheritance tax reliefs or how upfront payments should be taxed. Farmers looking to venture into this new field must tread carefully, armed with the best financial guidance.

Farmers and land managers interested in exploring this opportunity should start with a thorough assessment of their land’s biodiversity potential and engage with experts to navigate the registration process. Forrester Boyd Chartered Accountants advises a strategic approach—balancing the benefits against the long-term commitments and potential tax implications.

As this new regulatory environment takes shape, it promises to reshape not just landscapes but also financial outcomes for England’s agricultural community.

The introduction of BNG is more than an environmental initiative; it’s a pioneering economic opportunity for England’s farmers. For those ready to innovate, the rewards could be substantial. As experts in agricultural finance and tax planning, Forrester Boyd Chartered Accountants are equipped to provide farmers and land managers with the guidance needed to navigate these changes effectively, ensuring compliance and optimising financial benefits. Forrester Boyd Chartered Accountants remains committed to guiding clients through these green pastures, ensuring they reap all possible benefits. For detailed guidance on leveraging BNG for your farming business, connect with Forrester Boyd’s agriculture team today and plant the seeds for a profitable, sustainable future.

End of Multiple Dwellings Relief Announced

From 1 June 2024, the end of multiple dwellings relief under stamp duty land tax (SDLT) will resolve disputes regarding what constitutes a separate dwelling, such as a granny annexe. Nonetheless, this scrapped tax will affect English and Northern Irish buyers involved in the purchase of two or more properties in a single or linked transaction.

Currently, multiple dwellings relief facilitates a reduced SDLT rate for buyers acquiring multiple properties in a single or linked transaction. SDLT is calculated based on the average value per dwelling, allowing buyers to benefit from lower SDLT bands.

Relief to come to an end

The government has decided to discontinue this relief following instances of dubious claims, notably involving granny annexes. This change means that legitimate cases, such as purchasers of properties with additional cottages or self-contained units, will also lose this benefit. For example, the SDLT payable on a £750,000 property with a qualifying annexe will increase from £12,500 to £25,000 starting from 1 June.

Furthermore, while some firms have offered services to reclaim SDLT for a fee, these often relate to questionable eligibility for the multiple dwellings relief.

The abolition of multiple dwellings relief will largely not impact the majority of property transactions. However, it’s important to note:

• Relief will still be available for any contracts agreed upon on or before 6 March 2024, regardless of the completion date.

• Relief will cease unless a purchase is completed (or substantially performed) by 1 June 2024.

Purchases Involving Six or More Properties Purchasing six or more properties in

one transaction after this date will be subject to non-residential SDLT rates, which cap at 5%—significantly lower than the top residential rate of 12% or 15% for buy-to-let purchases. Without multiple dwellings relief, careful structuring of such deals will be necessary to ensure they qualify under a single contract.

For further details on SDLT, you can visit: https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/ stamp-duty-land-tax-manual.

Historic buildings scheme comes to an end with hopes for further funding in the future

A HUGELY successful scheme investing in heritage assets around the historic quarter of the Port of Grimsby recently came to an end, but with hopes that funding may be found for a “PSiCA Phase Two”.

The “PSiCA” (Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas) fund has been delivered as part of the Greater Grimsby Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) and has supported projects such as Creative Start’s Great Escape, Turntable Gallery (building 88), the Creative Start building expansion, and Alfred Enderby smokehouse, which has more recently undergone a full schedule of works. In total, 16 grants have been awarded, 19 buildings improved, and more than 3,600m2 of commercial space has been improved or created.

The PSiCA scheme began with a total pot of £1m, and has been a joint project between Historic England and North East Lincolnshire Council, with support from Associated British Ports (ABP) and the council’s regeneration partner Equans. The five-year grant scheme began in 2019 and officially finished in January 2024, but several of the bigger projects supported by PSiCA ran into late March.

PSiCA grants have been awarded to assist projects, businesses, and organisations with structural repairs, brickwork repair and repointing, window and door repairs, new rainwater goods, and reinstating lost historic features. Any internal work must be carried out at the expense of the business or charity occupying the space.

Creative

smokehouse and the Peterson’s project. Steve and Caroline Ridlington of WE1 Heritage have renovated nine properties, offering workspaces and studios to artists, small businesses, and Blue Chip companies. They also, with PSiCA’s help, renovated ‘Coffee on the Docks’, a popular café space on Auckland Road with a rustic interior.

As part of the wider ‘Kasbah Remade’ programme of regeneration, the scheme has also generated new opportunities to access and appreciate the area’s heritage and contribute to its ‘sense of place’, including Heritage Open Days events which, in 2023, saw approximately 2,000 visitors to the area. The Heritage Open Days return in September, look out for details in the summer!

UK Leads the World in Global Decabonisation League - Report

The UK has a world-beating record in decarbonisation, with carbon emissions here plummeting faster from their all-time high than any other major economy, new analysis by Drax Electric Insights has found.

The country’s carbon emissions have fallen by 52% since their peak in 1971, a more significant drop than any other comparable nation.

The reduction in emissions contrasts starkly with other major economies whose emissions are still rising and have yet to peak. Countries including China, India, and Indonesia all still have rising emissions while their economies, which are powered by fossil fuels, rapidly grow.

The findings have been released ahead of the next instalment of the quarterly Drax Electric Insights report. The publication is an independent report by academics from Imperial College London commissioned by Drax through Imperial Consultants.

Drax Electric Insights sought to review the UK’s decarbonisation performance following the Government announcement in February that the country was the first in the world to halve its greenhouse gas emissions. In their modelling, 1990 was used as the comparison benchmark as this was when the Kyoto Protocol – the world’s first treaty on climate change – came into force.

The academics behind the Drax Electric Insights report wanted to construct a “fairer comparison” that accounted for the fact individual countries’ carbon emissions peaked at different times. For example, emissions in the United States have not fallen at all compared to 1990, but this masks the fact they have fallen by 18% in the last 17 years following their peak in 2005.

However, even when accounting for this new benchmark year, the UK continues to lead the world in decarbonisation.

Dr Iain Staffell of Imperial College London, and lead author of the quarterly Drax Electric Insights report series, said: “With governments across the world committed to tackling climate change, it is vital we have a way to track their progress that is both accurate and fair.

“By looking at when emissions from a country peaked, we have a fairer way of assessing how seriously countries are taking their commitments to reduce carbon emissions. This will be

The Decarbonisation League Table: Reduction in national carbon emissions from all-time peak, across the thirty largest countries which each emit over 200 MtCO2 per year.

especially important when looking at the growing Asian economies such as China, India, and Indonesia.

“No other major economy has cut its carbon emissions faster than the UK, which is a real achievement. A large part of the progress made here has been phasing out coal-fired power stations and investing in renewables. However, even with the last remaining coal plant closing in the UK later this year, we will still need to find new ways to meet our 2050 net zero ambitions.”

European nations fill the top seven spots of the Global Decarbonisation League Table, with France and Germany coming 2nd and 3rd behind the UK. While the UK’s emissions peaked in 1979, most countries analysed in the report had emissions peaking in the 21st century.

Drax has played a leading role in the UK’s decarbonisation success. Its eponymous power station in North Yorkshire was Western Europe’s largest coal-fired plant, but through converting it to use biomass, it is now the country’s single-largest renewable generator.

The company plans to go even further in the years ahead and install Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology at the plant, with an aim of capturing around 4 million tonnes of CO2 each year from 2030. BECCS is the only technology which can simultaneously generate renewable electricity while permanently removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Miguel Veiga-Pestana, Drax’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said:

“Climate change is the greatest challenge the world faces, and while the UK has already done a great deal, we are only halfway towards reaching net zero.

“To reach that goal, we must start permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere. That is why Drax has been pioneering BECCS technology so we can remove those emissions and at the same time generate renewable electricity for millions of homes and businesses.

“We continue to work with the government to ensure BECCS at Drax Power Station can help the UK achieve its net zero targets, create thousands of jobs, and help strengthen the UK’s longterm energy security.”

Let Logistics UK’s Transport Manager events ease the legislative load

Transport managers need to keep abreast of a wealth of legislation covering the logistics industry to remain compliant. In fact, business group Logistics UK estimates that those working in such a critical role in the supply chain need to keep up to date with more than 70 pieces of individual legislation covering the operation and maintenance of vehicles: regular updates and small changes can mean that the actual amount of work required is significantly higher.

To help ease the burden, and ensure that the nation’s transport managers can stay up to date with the latest compliance and legislation changes, Logistics UK is once again holding its highly rated Transport Manager conferences this autumn, which are sponsored by Brigade Electronics. The conference series, now in its 24th year, will return from September with live events at 10 venues around the UK as well as a virtual event.

The conferences, which attracted a record number of over 1,800 delegates last year, offer transport managers the opportunity to hear from a variety of expert speakers, including the Traffic Commissioners, and provide all the latest information and guidance on industry legislation and other issues affecting their work, to ensure their fleets remain compliant and can operate safely.

In a packed one-day schedule, as well as a compliance update and Transport Manager calendar, this year’s programme will include sessions on:

• A view from the Traffic Commissioner

• GSR and ADAS systems

• The legal responsibilities of a transport manager

• The revision of the Transport Manager CPC syllabus

• Autonomous vehicles

• Driver focus

• Dealing with fatal incidents and collision investigation by the Metropolitan Police

Advisors from Logistics UK’s Member Advice Centre will also be on hand throughout the day to advise on legislation and compliance issues.

Kevin Green, Logistics UK’s Director of Policy and Communications, said:

“We are thrilled to be preparing for our 24th Transport Manager series this autumn. These events play an important part in the transport calendar, supported as they are by so many transport managers and our impressive line-up of speakers and sponsors.

“Keeping up to date on compliance changes and staying informed on developments in the industry are vital for transport managers so they can perform their role adequately. It’s also worth remembering that attending a Transport Manager event counts towards continuous professional development (CPD) requirements. With a packed schedule of top-quality speakers, we’re looking forward to another highly successful Transport Manager series this year and the advice is to book early to ensure your place as events are sure to fill up quickly.”

The price to attend for Logistics UK members is £345 plus VAT for the first delegate and £325 plus VAT for subsequent delegates; for non-Logistics UK members the cost is £445 plus VAT for the first delegate and £425 plus VAT for subsequent delegates.

Ravenser Odd: the medieval city Yorkshire lost to the sea

Dr Steve Simmons from the University of Hull’s Energy and Environment Institute shares the history and the search for ‘Yorkshire’s Atlantis’.

April 1 2024 marked the 725th anniversary of King Edward I granting royal charters to two settlements in the north of England: Kingston upon Hull and Ravenser Odd.

The first, of course, is better known as Hull, the city on the banks of the Humber estuary that today handles a quarter of UK seaborne trade.

Few will have heard of the second, though. Despite its relative importance in 1299, today, Ravenser Odd has been largely forgotten – because it disappeared, swallowed by the North Sea. It is, as one journalist put it, “Yorkshire’s Atlantis”.

Since 2021, I have taken responsibility for the seafloor searches for Ravenser, using high-resolution seafloor mapping equipment and interpreting the resulting data with local historian Phil Mathison. The story of Ravenser Odd and the search for its remains are the focus of an exhibition at the Hull History Centre.

THE NORTHERN CITY THAT SANK

Ravenser Odd began life as a port on the narrow spit of shingle and clay known as Spurn Head that forms the north bank of the

mouth of the Humber. The town grew into a prosperous settlement.

The 1299 charter made Ravenser into a recognised borough and exempted its merchants from some taxes. This allowed the town to build its own court, jail and chapel. It was represented by two members of parliament.

The town contributed ships to Edward I and Edward II’s wars with Scotland. Life in the town was lawless. Its envious rivals on the Humber, Grimsby and Hull, accused Ravenser of piracy, as did German merchants and the king of Norway.

By the mid-14th century, the storms and strong tidal currents of the North Sea began to take their toll on the settlement. A devastating blow was dealt in 1362 by the storm surge of St Marcellus’s flood after which the town began to be abandoned.

The very forces that created the land that Ravenser was situated on – and gave it an

advantage over other ports on the Humber – were to end its pre-eminence as a trading hub. As recorded in the Meaux Abbey Chronicle, by the end of the 14th century, corpses in the graveyard were being exposed by the sea. There were reports of looting of the chapel by “sacrilegious persons”.

COASTAL EROSION

The Holderness coastline, to the north of the Spurn peninsula, is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe. Its crumbling cliffs of soft boulder clay are retreating at an average rate of two metres a year.

Thirty settlements are known to have been lost. The location of Ravenser Odd, though, has long remained contested because the

historical evolution of Spurn Head remains uncertain. There have been no reports of structures from Ravenser for over 500 years. Suggested locations are thus linked to the various theories on the evolution of Spurn Head.

One theory, put forward in the 1960s, describes a 250-year cyclical evolution of Spurn in which the peninsula gradually extends further across the mouth of the Humber until it is breached. The resulting island gradually erodes while a new spit is formed further inland. This would place Ravenser around 2km offshore from the present peninsula.

Other theories suggest that the neck of the peninsula retreats constantly in line with the erosion of Holderness. This places Ravenser not far from the current shoreline.

Still, other theories site Ravenser on an area of shingle on the Humber side of Spurn Head that is uncovered at low tide. Some remains of buildings were discovered here in the 19th century, although they may date from later historical periods than the records we have of Ravenser.

Spurn’s remoteness and the inhospitable conditions of the North Sea give the peninsula a feeling of otherworldliness. The sense of isolation was enhanced in 2013 when the road along the 3km-long peninsula was cut off by a storm surge.

Conditions in the estuary make it difficult to search for traces of the lost town. In late 2021, Phil Mathison set up a collaboration with Hull University to survey the seafloor.

The high-resolution survey instrument we used, a multibeam echosounder, is routinely used by earth scientists, harbour authorities and archaeologists to map the seafloor. Our survey focused on an area where a seafloor anomaly had been previously seen by Mathison.

However, we failed to identify anything that could be identified as structural remains. This could be due to the constantly shifting sediment of the seafloor.

We will continue the hunt for Ravenser using instruments called parametric echosounders. These are capable of probing below the layers of seafloor sediment and would be deployed at locations identified as areas of interest from the previous surveys.

Land surveys of the subsurface would be possible using a combination of ground-penetrating radar and magnetic gradiometry during low tide. The latter was recently used to discover the remains of the village of Rungholt off the coast of Germany, also lost to St Marcellus’s storm of 1362.

In a region where life on the coastline remains precarious, the focus of the 725th anniversary of Ravenser’s charter has renewed interest in the town and its historical and symbolic importance. As our climate continues to warm, difficult coastal management decisions will be exacerbated by the increased likelihood of storms. This makes the story of the city Yorkshire lost poignantly relevant.

The settlement was the subject of a recent exhibition: Hull/Ravenser Odd: twin cities, sunken pasts at Hull History Centre. The Centre, which houses Hull City Council’s collection and the University’s archive, is a partnership between the University and the Council.

Hull University Business School celebrates 25 years

Since its foundation, Hull University Business School has been driven by the desire to inspire and challenge students to make a sustainable difference in business and society. The School uses its Authentic Business Learning method to provide high-quality, accredited educations across its subjects.

This ethos has prompted research, knowledge transfer and executive education collaborations with businesses and organisations that set out to make lasting changes.

Over the last year, the School built on its proud history of working with prestigious businesses, including National Rail, and demonstrated the

flair it has for making a sustainable difference.

The Royal Mint partnered with the University to conduct research into sustainable packaging alternatives for acrylic capsules used to display and protect coins. The research for the UK’s oldest company uses a new AI platform that can predict the properties of new materials. The project was

funded by the Royal Mint and the Higher Education Innovation Fund.

Last year the School also worked with leading kitchen manufacturer Wren Kitchens to accelerate their journey to net zero. The partnership uses a unique supply chain carbon mapping tool, developed at the University, to allow customers to make choices based on the carbon footprint

of each kitchen item, at the point of sale, offering them the chance to make more sustainable choices. Wren Kitchens and the University secured a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) from Innovate UK, to fund the two-year project.

Professor Robert Dover, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Business, Law and Politics, said:

“The University of Hull is exceptionally proud of the Business School, the work it does to inspire students, and the innovations made to drive change for businesses.

Partnering with the Royal Mint, the UK’s oldest company, demonstrates the School has a reputation for delivering that stretches beyond our region. The School looks forward to sharing its knowledge with many more businesses and students as it progresses towards the next milestone.”

Hull University Business School is a leading UK business school; its internationally recognised accreditations include the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) – held by fewer than 2 percent of the world’s 12,000 Business Schools.

Blog: Is an internship right for my business?

The answer you’re looking for is YES!

Recognising the benefits of internships, many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are starting to bring interns into their businesses. Companies see it not only as a route to source extra support on their projects, but also as an opportunity to attract top talent.

In my role as Employer Engagement Advisor at the University of Hull, I have had the pleasure of seeing many students flourish in their internship roles – providing them with on-the-job experience in their field of interest and bridging the gap between the lecture room and the professional world.

However, it is not just the interns that reap the rewards. What’s more, internships bring vast benefits to the employer by filling vital skills gaps, supplying dedicated support for a particular project, and saving on recruitment costs.

In my role as an advisor for the European Funded Humber Internship Programme, I saw the advantages internship programmes brought to businesses, particularly SMEs who don’t have access to a large talent pool and often don’t have the available resource to dedicate to a particular project. Funding opportunities open so much potential for businesses, which is why I am delighted to be working on a new internship programme, funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and powered by Levelling Up.

Through its delivery by the University of Hull’s Aura Innovation Centre, the new Humber Innovation Support Fund (HISP) provides businesses with internship support and/or specialist Research and Development expertise to help drive innovation. The funding will pay for an intern at a minimum rate of National Living Wage (NLW) for a 12-week duration up to 15 hours per week. Just think what could be achieved within that time! If you still need convincing, here are some of the top benefits an intern can bring to your business;

#1 Plugging the skills gap

Finding the right skills is a challenge that all businesses face.

The bright minds of the future are looking to apply their skills and start making their mark on the world of work. They bring an abundance of the latest skills and knowledge across a wide range of areas – engineers, data analysts, software developers, marketeers, IT technicians… the range of talent ready for you to tap into is endless.

Internships also provide the opportunity to ‘try before you buy.’ Businesses can establish

if a role taken by an intern is essential to their operations, and if so, if the chosen intern is the right fit for the job or whether a different skill set is required altogether!

#2 Ease of use of technology

In this modern era, new professionals often find it much easier to incorporate technology in their work routines. You could almost say they are hard wired for success!

Having grown up in a digital era, new professionals usually have a good understanding of the latest technologies and social media trends, which can support your business by developing efficient processes and technologically dynamic practices, enhancing your day-to-day productivity.

#3 You will gain fresh perspective

Interns often bring exciting ideas and fresh perspectives to your business. They may have a different approach to problem-solving or innovative insights that can benefit your company.

#4 Additional resource to accomplish innovation goals

If you have a short-term project that keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the pile because of a lack of skills or knowledge in that area, or lack of resource to dedicate to the project, an intern can help provide that additional resource and dedicate their skills to help deliver a business need.

#5 Talent Pipeline

Internship programs can serve as a talent pipeline for future full-time hires. It is a great way to see how much potential a student or recent graduate has in the field, and if they perform well and make a great fit in your company culture, you may choose to offer them a permanent position after graduation.

Ultimately, by employing an intern, you are helping to launch the careers of the next generation which is invaluable to the region’s economic growth. If I have been able to convince you that an intern would be right for your business, please contact me at the Aura Innovation Centre to discuss your options.
