INTRODUCTION

The instruction manual visually indicates the equipment/ joints needed to make each frame in each room of the Biennale. It indicates the phases in which it needs to be constructed and presents reflective comments on how, if done again it could be improved.

Erection time : 20 Minutes Critical Reflection : Drill bits splintered resulting in problems assembling and then dissembling the work.

The amount of screws in conjunction with the screw bits splintering meant less skilled operators struggled to meet time restrictions, it could be worth imagining a joint that requires less screws to solve both issues.

With the tension caused by the string some pieces of timber started to bow throughout the day, making re-use hard and affected the overall look of the design by the end of the day.

Erection time : 45 Minutes Critical Reflection : The exhibition space had architrave that projected into the room that prevented the assembly going as smoothly as instructed, as the frame was to go from wall to wall, but be assembled in the middle of the room then slide into place. Yet because of the architrave that wasn’t picked up in the survey drawings, this wasn’t possible and so we couldn’t get round behind the frame to screw in from the back; building the frame in half’s and then moving them in place would improve this. Pre-making hooks for the fabric would reduce build time and also allow the fabric to be used repeatedly as in disassembly the staples forced us to rip the fabric.

Erection time : 1hr Minutes Critical Reflection : Upon reflection further exploration and research into the paper and weaving would have helped as we wanted it to be more creased, also the material was fragile and was easy to rip and so something slightly more robust in such a public place may have been more suited. The frame was easy to assemble, however it was a struggle towards the end due to height issues and so required a taller person to finish the room. The weaving and projectors took up most of the time and so a way to minimise this time would be good to think about in the future.

Erection time : 37 Minutes Critical Reflection : The frame was awkward to assemble with the majority of it being above head height. With the need to hold it in place whilst screwing it caused a complicated build that could be improved by a simpler method of construction like a slotting method or clip in system minimising the need for screws and improving assembly time. The setting out of room 3 meant that the frame leant slightly in one direction, improved measuring tools should be considered in future use in order to make sure setting out is correct.

Erection time : 32 Minutes Critical Reflection : Due to poor setting out of room 4 the frame ended up being wonky as both sides of the door frame didn’t align, forcing all parts to be pulled off their intended line. This is a result of a slightly bowed timber, however if the timber was pulled into place rather than left to its natural fall it would have still been straight, yet a lack of communication from the technology team on how to correct a bowed piece of timber resulted in it being left to its own devices that gave the undesired result.

Erection time : 18 Minutes Critical Reflection : Putting the mirror onto the frame was difficult and resulted in a slightly messy finish.

Further exploration and practice may have allowed us to achieve a better finish.

A better quality mirror may well have made for an easier erection and better finish also, so maybe more research into materials could have improved the quality.

The amount of reliance on screws Screw heads splintered Some joints where fiddly at height Time to assemble may be improved with further exploration to the joint design.

Double sided tape was used to stick many important parts of the exhibition together, on reflection this isn’t the greatest of methods and we could look into ways to attach material such as trace with something like tying or stitching methods instead.

• More understanding of building methods before installation to make smoother operation • Drilling required skilled assembly and meant for longer assembly time and chance for human error • Drilling meant that only a few people could assemble at any one time as the lack of drills reducing speed of assembly.

CONCLUSION

The instruction manuals were of key importance on the day of the Biennale. They allowed all members of the design team to see how the frame should go together, even if it was just giving them a little bit more of an understanding. The tight programme meant that training people in how to construct the frame was not always possible; that combined with weekly timetable clashes. Therefore this was a quick way to allow all design team members to visually gain better knowledge of how we envisioned it to be constructed on the day. Overall the instruction manuals are also good at demonstrating our understanding of areas of improvements on the day.
