Joel Wallace Erabu

Wallace completed his Master of Architecture with distinction (1st Class) from Arts University Bournemouth (UK) after a prosperous odyssey that commenced at the 2018 Venice Biennale (Italy), in collaboration with the British Council. His thesis 'Of Colour & Shadow' was nominated for the RIBA Silver President’s Medals 2020, & a finalist for the RIBA Wessex/ Dorset AUB prize. In 2022, Wallace was bestowed upon an Honorary Degree from AUB for his significant contribution to the field of architecture and design. Wallace’s Masters project was featured #1 in Dezeen's top 10 most interesting projects of Virtual Design Festival 2020. Consequently, this led him to winning the prestigious Nicholas Durbridge Prize for Collaboration 2020 awarded by AUB after his design work for a travelling architectural show was praised by the Dezeen team. The project looked at how a performance structure could traverse nations from Brownsea Island UK to Venice Italy and Uganda. The speculative structure would then remain as the Ugandan Pavilion at the Biennale; commemorating the first time that the East African nation would be taking part. Nicholas judged Wallace on how his work had had a “consistently inclusive and collaborative approach in demonstrating how positive design can be in contributing and enhancing the world.”  Furthermore, Wallace was awarded the AUB Architecture Performativity Prize presented by revered architect Ola-Dele Kuku.
During his Bachelors at University of Brighton, Wallace won the RIBA Scott Brownrigg prize in first design led photography competition. Wallace's M.Arch thesis drawing got featured as cover image for RIBA's campaign #RIBAFutureArchitects Class of 2020, a platform provided to showcase the best up-and-coming student + graduate work and celebrate the resilient and creative class.  Wallace has volunteered on charitable missions with the United Nations and The Prince's Trust rebuilding broken communities all over East Africa.
