Discussions of space in homes often centre around maximizing small spaces, filling very large spaces and dealing with architectural features or awkward spaces. These are of course very important considerations when furnishing and accessorising a home. However, there are also rules that emerge from this that can be broken when factoring in your personal style. For example storage is a major consideration if you live in a small condo, and for the majority of homeowners who subscribe to mainstream transitional furniture styles and interiors (that look like Urban Barn – current, livable and stylish) we would be focused on storage ottomans and multipurpose pieces. However, I have had clients living in very small spaces that have a minimalistic aesthetic and own few clothes, dishes and collectibles, thus needing little space.
