SPORTS NEWS Old Savs Return For Annual Sport Fixtures Former QEGS Rugby and Hockey stars were welcomed back to the school in December to take on the current XV and Hockey XI. In Hockey, the school needed a penalty shuffle to win following a thrilling 3-3 draw. (photo below) The Rugby 1st XV won by 5 tries to 1 - meaning they finished Autumn unbeaten for the first time in 20 years.

MCC Cricket Match Ends In Draw Under glorious blue skies, the Cricket 1st XI welcomed an MCC side for their annual fixture in April, which was led by Andrew Rennison (OS, 2005) (right) and umpired by St.John Pilkington (OS, 1973) . Opening the season playing against the MCC was always going to be a massive challenge for the boys. Staying with tradition, the MCC batted first and posted a challenging target of 231-3. Whilst it proved to be well out of reach for the young QEGS team, they maintained their discipline and batted out 59 overs to ensure a draw.

Twickenham FINAL for U18s And what a day it was. With blue skies, and a very fresh breeze to say the least, it was a far cry from the snow which blighted the U15 final of 2013. By early afternoon, swarms of black and gold were congregating around the stadium in expectation of the afternoon ahead. At the start of the evening, the generosity of major sponsors from last year’s Round the World Tour were acknowledged, with a gift, and a few words from Tour Committee Chair John Allott. A magnificent sum of over £80,000 was raised, to support the tour party of 56 boys and 6 members of staff on their trip of a lifetime.

flags, face paints, headbands and of course, the yellow and black afros! Whilst the result, 18-10 to a very strong Bromsgrove side, may not have gone our way, every member of the team gave their all. It was an incredible journey in the cup and to have reached the final at HQ for the first time since 2000 was a tremendous achievement. Trevor Barker “I don’t think we had the rub of the green, especially at the breakdown. But Bromsgrove were just that bit more powerful and we lost our shape at times. Overall I’m really proud of the team’s performance.” Rugby, Trevor Barker, gave a touching tribute the squad - arguably the most successful 1st XV squad in the history of QEGS - with special mention to the Year 13 Leavers. A record 22 rugby colours were awarded at the end of the season - testimony to the calibre of players who have represented the school this season.
