PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The PE curriculum is based on fundamental movement skills. These include the body techniques of agility, coordination and balance, the movement skills of running, jumping, hopping and skipping and the ball skills of throwing, catching, rolling, bouncing, kicking and striking.

In Games lessons in the Autumn and Spring terms, Years 3 to 6 are taught hockey and netball. The basic skills of these 2 sports are introduced in Year 3 with mini games and modified games used to practise the techniques. As the students progress through to Year 5 and 6, the skills become more advanced and full sided games of netball are played alongside 7 aside hockey. In addition to this, taster sessions are offered in a variety of sports such as football, rugby, badminton, basketball and volleyball.

In PE lessons, equal time is spent on both dance and gymnastics. In dance, students learn about different styles of dance including line dancing, cheerleading, Bollywood and lyrical and they choreograph routines in pairs and groups. Floor and apparatus work is covered in gymnastics with all lessons taking place in our fully equipped gymnasium.

For all years, the summer term sees the focus turn to athletics in the Games lessons with lessons taking place at the track. Jumping and throwing techniques are developed as well as sprint and longer distance running events. Striking sports in the form of cricket and rounders take place in PE lessons with batting and fielding skills taught through skills practices and modified games. In addition to this, the basics of tennis are taught through mini tennis lessons in the sports hall.

The PE curriculum is further enhanced by a full range of lunchtime and after school sports clubs and a comprehensive programme of fixtures.
