Martinborough reaffi rmed their favouritism for the Wairarapa Tennis Regional One Championship with a surprising 7-2 defeat of Carterton on Saturday.
The win virtually guarantees the threetime defending Gawith Shield champions of the top seeding for the semifi nals with one round to play this week.
Martinborough wrapped up the tie winning fi ve of the six singles, although it was much closer than the score would suggest, with four of the singles victories decided in three sets. The fi fth was won in two tiebreaker sets, with Ed Wilkie upsetting Matt Spooner in the clash of the number two men.
Marco de Groot beat William Day 6-1 4-6 6-4, Rick Wilkie came from a set down for a 2-6 6-2 6-2 win over Andi Steinemann, Katherine Jacobs upset Alice Whitaker 6-3 2-6 6-4, and Martha Wojcikowski edged Karen Goodall 6-2 4-6 7-5. Carterton’s only singles point came from Jono Hurley, who defeated Chris Wilkie 6-2 6-1.
In the doubles, Ed and Rick Wilkie dropped the fi rst set before beating Spooner and Steinemann 2-6 6-1 6-4, and Libby Paterson and Rhona Lovell accounted for Whitaker and Gabriella Nicholson 6-1 6-3. Hurley and William Day rescued a point for Carterton with a 6-4 6-3 defeat of Chris Wilkie and de Groot.
Opaki White won the club derby over Opaki Red 6-3 and moved into second place in the championship standings.
The White team took control of the tie in the singles, winning four of the matches in straight sets. Belinda Day defeated Tori Bunny 6-3 6-2, Duncan Oakley was too good for Mike King 6-2 6-3, Brett Dymond got the better of Nathan Riwai-Couch 6-2 6-2, and Richie Day beat Ben RiwaiCouch 6-3 7-5.
Katie Alsop, with a 6-2 6-2 win over Geri Brooking, and Matt Bunny, with a 6-2 3-6 7-6 defeat of Stu Wyeth gave the ‘Reds’ some hope heading into the doubles.
However, the comeback didn’t eventuate with Oakley and Jon McNab sealing the points for Opaki White with a 6-1 6-1 win over King and Matt Bunny, and Brooking and Belinda Day winning the women’s doubles over Alsop and Tori Bunny 2-6 6-2 7-6.
Ben and Nathan Riwai-Couch pulled a point back for Opaki Red with a 7-6 6-4 win over Dymond and Richie Day.
Martinborough will wrap up top seeding for the semifi nals with two wins in their fi nal round-robin clash with Masterton, while Carterton need to win four of their matches against Opaki White to sneak into the playoff s ahead of Opaki Red, who have the bye. GAWITH SHIELD POINTS
Opaki White’s Richie Day won a tight clash with Ben Riwai-Couch in the Opkai club derby.
