IN THIS ISSUE, MONMOUTH HEALTH & LIFE UNVEILS ITS “Best Of” choices as determined by its readers, who were asked to vote for the restaurants, shops and services they consider the best of the best in Monmouth County. At Monmouth Medical Center, our dedication to offering the very best of care to our community members extends far beyond the care we provide within the walls of our hospital. Monmouth continues to make significant strides in expanding our primary care network. Primary care providers, who are often the first contact people have with the health care system, diagnose and treat illnesses and spot minor health problems before they become serious ones. They offer preventive services such as flu shots, cancer screening and counseling on diet and smoking, and play an important role in helping to manage the care of patients with complex, chronic health conditions. In this issue, you will read about the new collaboration between Monmouth Medical Center and Barnabas Health Medical Group, a group practice affiliated with RWJBarnabas Health and comprised of highly trained and experienced world-class primary and specialty care physicians. In June, we opened a primary care office in Tinton Falls that offers convenient access to a team of internal medicine practitioners who provide their patients with the highest quality medical care. Over the next several months, we look forward to offering new primary care offices in Eatontown and Ocean Township, as well as in Howell in conjunction with our southern campus. Evidence shows that convenient access to primary care can help our community members live longer, feel better and avoid time away from work. By working to build close partnerships between clinicians and patients, we are helping to ensure that our neighbors receive the individualized health care and guidance they need. Sincerely,

From help with bathing to help with arts and crafts this is home care. At FirstLight™ of Eastern Monmouth, our care goes beyond the basics of bathing, house cleaning and medication reminders. If you or your loved one want to work in the garden or work on crafts, we’re there. Our team is made up of extraordinary caregivers who will spend time getting to know your family and creating ways to enrich your lives. Give us a call to learn the many ways we can help.

EDITOR’S NOTE

HONORING THE BEST! IT’S BECOME TRADITION like enjoying outdoor concerts and going to the beach. Each year, we reveal the winners of our annual Best of Monmouth Readers’ Choice Awards—the finest bakeries, barbers, BBQ joints, breakfast spots, butcher shops and dozens of other local merchants and services. This year, your votes totaled 12,932— a record number for this long-standing county-wide competition. Thank you so much for taking the time to participate! As you read the results, starting on page 35, enjoy the spotlight that we shine on places like the Shrewsbury Cobbler Shop and Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant—they’re long-time businesses that are favorites of yours and mine. On the flipside, winners such as Penelope Traveling Boutique and Moon Child Boutique are relatively new to the neighborhood but are quickly becoming go-to spots for shoppers. If you don’t know them yet, we hope you’ll give them a try. We also hope you’ll join us in celebrating the winners at our annual Best of Monmouth Food Festival Party & Expo at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park on Thursday, Oct. 12. (The festivities take place from 5 to 9 p.m.) Winners will display their wares, and happily many of these are edible! Last year, so many of our readers turned out for the festivities, and we had a blast, enjoying cocktails and cookies, burgers and brow shaping, games and galleries, and so much more! You can purchase your tickets now at healthandlifemags.com/monmouth. Meanwhile, enjoy this issue of Monmouth Health & Life. In addition to the Best of Monmouth results, we give you articles that will raise your back-to-school spirit. If you’re taking your kid on a campus tour, turn to page 50 and read about five college towns that can double as vacation destinations. On page 76, you’ll find recipes that give a refreshing and nutritious twist to breakfast— still the most important meal of the day for you and your children! And send kids back to class in style: The season’s trendiest denim selections (page 20) and boys’ haircuts (page 24) are found in this edition. I hope to see you at the Berkeley! Be sure to introduce yourself—I’m looking forward to meeting all of you!

There are a lot of perks to living in Monmouth County, including the proximity to the ocean. If you love being out on the water (not just in it) and you don’t own a craft, you’re in luck because several boat tour operators are willing to set sail with you. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer and take in some quality time with friends and family while taking in the sites along the coast. RUFF LIFE? BRING HOME A FURRY COMPANION

Aug. 26 is National Dog Day, but you can improve every day for a shelter pooch by giving one a forever home. And according to research, caring for a pet can improve your outlook too. If adopting a pet is in your future, consider PetMD’s top 10 friendliest dog breeds: bulldog, beagle, bull terrier, collie, Newfoundland, vizsla, Irish setter, poodle, Labrador retriever and golden retriever. Of course, mutts make loveable companions too. KEEP ON RUNNING (OR WALKING)

Tired of the same road races and flat 5K courses? Put some fun into your next run by choosing an event that goes the extra mile to make your race a memorable experience. Here are a few that might pique your interest: Saturday in the Park Women’s 5K, Sept. 2 Run or walk for a good cause at this 5K for women in Holmdel. The event benefits organizations with programs dedicated to providing shelter, counseling, advocacy and education for women and their families in Monmouth County. It’s a 3.09-mile course with a maximum elevation of 313.81 feet and some steep terrain. Are you up for the challenge? We think so! Info: saturdayinthepark5k.org Brielle Day Hill & Dale 10K Challenge, Sept. 9 Go the distance at this 6.2-miler, open to all ages! As the name suggests, the race route will take runners through the streets and many, many hills of Brielle. If you’re not ready for the course, a stress-free carnival will be set up near the finish line with food, drinks, music and rides. Info: register.jsrc.org. NEVER STOP LEARNING

ROCK THESE SOCKS

The next time a flight is in your future, consider wearing a pair of compression socks. Studies show that they help circulate oxygenated blood and prevent conditions like blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. And don’t wear the ugly brown medical-grade socks that your grandmother wore because companies like VIM & VIGR make socks, such as those pictured, in cool and stylish designs. “I’ve never had any real problems flying, but after long flights sometimes my legs feel a bit tired and heavy so I tried them,” says Rita Guarna, editor in chief of Monmouth Health and Life. “I definitely felt the difference: After landing, my legs felt rested enough to sprint through the airport.”

The first day of school is just around the corner, but why wait to start learning. Monmouth County is home to several museums that are educational and entertaining. Be sure you and your family visit these places: Monmouth Museum, 765 Newman Springs Rd., Lincroft, 732.747.2266. View innovative, changing exhibits focusing on art, natural sciences and cultural history for all ages. Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County, 310 Mounts Corner Dr., Freehold, 732.252.6990. This center is dedicated to the promotion of public awareness of Monmouth County’s Jewish heritage. Allaire Village, 4263 Atlantic Ave., Farmingdale, 732.919.3500. This historic site was once an ironproducing factory known as the Howell Works Company. Now, it’s an interactive museum where visitors can experience history through hands-on activities. New Jersey Museum of Transportation, 4265 Atlantic Ave., Wall Township, 732.938.5524. The museum’s Pine Creek Railroad is one of the oldest operating narrow gauge railway exhibits in the country. It’s dedicated to the collection, preservation and operation of historic railroad equipment. Navesink Twin Lights, 2 Light House Rd., Highlands, 732.872.1814. This nonoperational lighthouse has been around since 1828.

FIB NO MORE Turns out those harmless little white lies might not be so harmless. Scientists studying brain scans of the amygdala, the region of the brain that responds to unpleasant emotions, found that the area became desensitized with each successive fib. Researchers theorize that the more we lie, the less the brain responds, priming people to tell whoppers with ease.

Dementia is declining: Some 8.8 percent of adults older than age 65 have it, but that’s a decrease from 11.1 percent in 2000. Researchers posit that the good news is the result of people’s improved heart health. In addition, there’s been an increase in average education levels, and studies suggest that education might help protect against the disease.

MAKE THE CUT THESE FOUR TAKES ON THE UNDERCUT RANGE FROM CONSERVATIVE TO FREE-SPIRITED— AND THEY’RE THE PERFECT STYLE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL.

CLASSIC:

What is the undercut? Longer on top and buzzed on the sides is the long and short of it. This classic cut is all about contrast and gives the wearer a unique, refined look that’s on trend. There are myriad variations, but the classic undercut is usually parted or slicked back, like the greasers of the 1950s. Longer hair will give you more volume, making it feel a bit like a pompadour. Use pomade, gel or wax to style. (Pomade will give slicked back ’dos a glossy shine.)

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILDER SIDE...

LAYERED:

For a deconstructed look, add layers to longer hair on top, then brush it forward, creating a touseled style that makes you look relaxed. A bonus? The layers add depth to your hair, visually amping up your locks. Use a matte product so hair doesn’t get too clumpy.

24

LONG:

Like the look of long hair, but don’t want to appear like you played in an ’80s hair band? The long-hair undercut is a combination of short sides and long on top. It’s eye-catching and modern, and it’s gaining popularity with the younger crowd.

TOP KNOT:

The top knot (or man bun) has been hot for a few years now, but showing off your undercut while the rest of your hair is up will wow in a whole new way. Don’t stress about styling. Just gather hair, twist a bit and tie. The messier the man bun, the cooler it looks.

TO PROVIDE EXPANDED ACCESS TO primary care medical services, Barnabas Health Medical Group (BHMG) has opened BHMG Shrewsbury Primary Care in Tinton Falls. The first in a network of three primary care facilities scheduled to open in Monmouth County, BHMG Shrewsbury Primary Care providers at the new practice will: perform annual physical exams, give blood tests and vaccinations, diagnose and treat common medical problems, discuss healthy lifestyle choices and refer patients to medical specialists when necessary. “In collaboration with Barnabas Health Medical Group, Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) continues to make significant strides in expanding our primary care network,” says Bill Arnold, president and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center. “A

primary care provider (PCP) is a patient’s first point of contact for routine screenings and exams as well as for chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. BHMG Shrewsbury Primary Care offers a team of physicians with vast experience in primary care medicine, including health counseling and screening, who are committed to creating partnerships with their patients to maintain and improve lifelong health.” Nicholas Spetko, M.D., board-certified internist with Barnabas Health Medical Group notes, “The relationship between a PCP and a patient is the keystone of care. At BHMG Shrewsbury Primary Care, our mutual goal is to keep our patients healthy over the long-term by practicing acute, chronic and preventive medicine in a coordinated, patient-centered environment.”

Located at 766 Shrewsbury Ave., Suite 100, West Building in Tinton Falls, the nearly 7,000-square-foot facility features calming, spa-like décor designed to create a feeling of serenity, with 14 exam rooms and ample parking. THE ODDS THANKS TO HIS TEAM AT MMC, LEN KICZEK IS BEATING PROSTATE CANCER—A DISEASE THAT RUNS IN HIS FAMILY.

There is a history of prostate cancer in Len Kiczek’s family, but he has been cancer free since receiving treatment from the Prostate Cancer Program at Monmouth Medical Center seven years ago.

PROSTATE CANCER CLAIMED THE LIVES OF HIS GRANDFATHER, father and brother, but despite his family history, Len Kiczek is winning the battle with the deadly disease. Seven years after receiving treatment from the Prostate Cancer Program at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC), the 67-year-old father and grandfather is cancer free.

Non-surgical treatment options for prostate cancer

AGRESSIVE PSA TESTING Beginning in the mid-2000s, Len began undergoing regular prostatespecific antigen (PSA) blood tests to screen for prostate cancer. Testing continued in 2008 when he and his wife, Gina, moved to Long Branch, where Len was seen by now retired MMC urologist Arnold Grebler, M.D. When PSA results showed elevated numbers, Dr. Grebler referred Len to his colleague Mitchell Weiss, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist at MMC who underwent training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. At the direction of Dr. Grebler, Len had a biopsy for prostate cancer in which a small tissue sample was removed from the prostate for further examination. The pathology report revealed the presence of cancer cells but was considered “favorable risk” prostate cancer. Drs. Weiss and Grebler provided Len with an overview of surgical and non-surgical treatment options, including prostate removal, external beam radiation and brachytherapy. After consulting with his physicians and assessing what was best for his busy lifestyle as a solo law practitioner, Len’s individualized treatment plan became clear. In 2009, he underwent hormone therapy—also known as androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) or androgen suppression therapy—to reduce levels of male hormones and ultimately shrink the prostate cancer. In 2010, after the completion of hormone therapy, Len underwent brachytherapy—Permanent Seed —LEN KICZEK Implant (PSI)—a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment overseen by both Drs. Grebler and Weiss, who also serves as chairman of radiation oncology at MMC. During the same-day procedure, 72 seeds were implanted in the prostate gland, giving a high radiation dose to the cancer, and sparing the surrounding healthy tissues. Len was back to work and his usual routine within two days of the procedure, and for every six months following the first five years of treatment, he followed up with a urologist and oncologist and had blood work taken.

They resemble grains of rice, so small that dozens can be cupped in the palm of your hand. But when these tiny radioactive capsules are placed directly into the prostate gland, they deliver a powerful punch in fighting the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men. Since 1998, this pioneering radiation implant therapy, also called permanent seed brachytherapy (PSB), has been performed at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC)— the region’s leader in providing state-of-the-art cancer and urological services and the first hospital in central New Jersey to offer real-time, dynamic computer-assisted planning for men with early-stage prostate cancer undergoing PSB. A team of highly skilled urologists, radiation oncologists and physicists is performing this permanent, low-dose radiation seed implant procedure, which dramatically limits the radiation dose to surrounding tissue and organs. Through the procedure, 3-D contours of the prostate are obtained at the time of the procedure and acquired by the planning computer directly stationed in the operating room. Using a sophisticated software program, the computer optimizes both the number and position of the seeds to deliver a precise planned dose. “The intra-operative planning program is critical for identifying the approach to be followed in placing the seeds,” says Jules Geltzeiler, M.D., chief of urology at MMC. “It also provides ‘real-time’ dose calculation and dynamic feedback as the procedure is progressing to achieve the desired dose goal to the prostate, while maintaining critical dose constraints to the urethra and rectum.” As a result, the titanium capsules, which contain a radioactive substance, then can be implanted into the prostate with pinpoint accuracy. “This is a significant advancement in seed brachytherapy that allows us to optimize and immediately look at the dose to the prostate from the seeds as we are implanting them,” says Mitchell Weiss, M.D., chairman of Radiation Oncology at MMC. “It gives us a tremendous advantage in limiting dose to the urethra and rectum while delivering the proper dose to the gland itself. “When we evaluate the implant by CT (computed tomography) scan one month after the procedure, which is considered the gold standard and should be done in every case, we have been delighted to find that the dose goals have been maintained,” he adds. “We have been amazed at the lack of urinary and rectal symptoms in our patients. It’s very encouraging.”

“THE HIGHLY TRAINED PHYSICIANS EXPLAINED OPTIONS IN GREAT DETAIL AND MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY,”

CANCER FREE Today, Len’s outlook remains promising. Seven years after receiving prostate cancer treatment, Len reflects on how he knew right from the get-go that he was in good hands at MMC. “The highly trained physicians explained options in great detail and made me feel comfortable every step of the way,” he says. “Thanks to Monmouth’s expertise in treating prostate cancer, I continue to be cancer free. This is a huge relief to my family and me.”

IN GOOD HEALTH

Now in control A BUSINESS OWNER REGAINS QUALITY OF LIFE AFTER TREATMENT AT MMC’S GAMMA KNIFE CENTER.

IT WAS MORE THAN T WO AND A HALF years ago that 52-year-old Carmin Giardina began seeking new treatment options for his essential tremor. What started as a nuisance, over time began impacting Carmin’s daily life and work. The Belleville resident and owner of a landscaping and irrigation company was having difficulty eating and needed to use two hands to sign his own name. “As a small business owner, when my tremors began to affect my everyday life and my livelihood, I knew it was time for help,” he says. Essential tremor—like which Carmin was experiencing—is a condition that causes part of the body to shake or tremble uncontrollably, resulting in difficulty writing, drinking from a cup or dialing a telephone. Often the symptoms include action tremor in the upper extremities, such as the shoulder, arm, forearm or hand, and may also involve a resting tremor of the head and neck or lower jaw. Sometimes the voice may also be involved. COMFORTABLE AT MONMOUTH After Carmin had little luck in treating his tremor with various medications, he began researching other options. His research quickly led him to The Gamma Knife Center at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC),

where medical co-directors Ty J. Olson, M.D., FACS, a board-certified neurosurgeon, and Sang E. Sim, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist, are leading the way in the treatment of essential tremor. “From the first time I met with Dr. Olson and Dr. Sim, I knew they were right for me,” says Carmin. “I immediately felt comfortable with their knowledge and clinical expertise.” Soon after meeting with Drs. Olson and Sim, Carmin decide to move forward with Gamma Knife treatment for his tremor. A non-invasive treatment option for essential tremor as well as brain tumors, Gamma Knife radiosurgery delivers a high dose of radiation to a specific point within the brain, sparing healthy tissue. Powerful, highly focused gamma radiation beams target and destroy overactive cells in the thalamus while minimizing the risk of radiation to other nearby parts of the brain. The procedure does not require general anesthesia, and patients experience few side effects, are able to return home the same day and typically see reduction in their tremor in three to six months. “The Gamma Knife targets the cells of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) in the thalamus with such accuracy that it minimizes the risk of radiation to nearby normal parts of the brain,” Dr. Olson says.

Carmin Giardina (center) suffered from essential tremor until he was treated by Ty J. Olson, M.D., and Sang E. Sim, M.D., co-medical directors at the Gamma Knife Center at Monmouth Medical Center.

“The unique design of the Gamma Knife includes 201 beams of focused radiation, each carrying a very small, safe amount of radiation until the combined beams meet at the targeted VIM and destroy the overactive cells,” adds Dr. Sim. SEEING A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE To receive his treatment, Carmin spent just four hours at MMC during which time a carefully detailed and precise map of his brain was created. The blueprint of Carmin’s brain was then used as a guide while Drs. Olson and Sim administered the focused dose of radiation. That very day Carmin returned home, where he spent a week resting. Within months, he began to see a significant difference in his tremor. “I was astounded when 80 percent of my symptoms resolved within six months with absolutely no side effects,” he recalls. “I could write, dial the phone, hold a glass and even eat soup without a problem.” Carmin was so pleased with his results, he is planning to undergo the procedure a second time to address an essential tremor on his left side. “Thanks to Dr. Olson, Dr. Sim and the rest of the staff at MMC, I do not have to live with tremors. I have regained my quality of life and they are part of the reason why.”

Penelope Traveling Boutique hit the road in 2014 with their fashion truck (they can usually be found in Highlands or Long Branch but they also park at food truck and wine and beer festivals). Featuring an eclectic mix of designer and showroom samples along with one-of-akind clothing and accessories, the truck is restocked every three weeks. Despite being on wheels, this traveling boutique doesn’t disappoint. It’s a lovely space with a changing room and outdoor lighting for nighttime shoppers. 1 Katherine’s 100 Main St. Manasquan 732.528.1099 shop-katherines.com

Tim Shaw is a well-respected and professional yoga instructor, but he wasn’t always so zen. Originally on tour with his band, the stress and travel took a hard toll on his body, until one day his wife decided to drag him to a yoga class. He discovered he loves the practice, honing his skills at the Jivamukti Yoga School in Manhattan. Now at Even Flow Yoga, you can expect a fun-filled class from Tim, which includes music, humor and a powerful flowing asana practice.

EMBARKING ON CAMPUS TOURS WITH YOUR TEEN? SEEING THE SCHOOL IS JUST A SMALL PART OF THE FUN IN THESE CITIES FULL OF SIGHTS. BY MARISA SANDORA

50

COLLEGE- T CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Schools to see: University of North Carolina, Duke University (Durham) Around town: The city was actually created to serve the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was established in 1793 as the first state university in the country. The historic charm can still be felt in the winding streets, stone walls and small shops that surround the school. On bustling Franklin Street, more than 200 restaurants, bars and shops serve the multicultural population. Called “America’s Foodiest Small Town” by Bon Appetit, Chapel Hill is a culinary delight. For a memorable BLT, try Merrit’s Store & Grill. For classic Southern dishes, you can’t go wrong at Crook’s Corner, and for upscale Asian food, try Lantern. Work off your meal by taking a stroll around the North Carolina Botanical Garden, a free popular spot to enjoy the outdoors. The life-size chessboard is a hit with kids. Then take a tour of the Top of the Hill Distillery, which uses local ingredients to make organic spirits. Tar Heels (and college hoops fans in general) won’t want to miss the Carolina Basketball Museum, full of video clips, game balls, uniforms and more. Dare we mention Duke in this paragraph? UNC’s archrival is a mere 20 minutes away, so head to Durham if you’d like to visit the home of the Blue Devils.

BERKELEY, CALIF.

Schools to see: UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University (San Francisco) Around town: Enjoy the sunshine when visiting the University of California, Berkeley. Stroll down Telegraph Avenue to take in the hippie vibe while checking out the eclectic mix of stores, cafés and street vendors. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, after all. Tilden Regional Park is the perfect place to go for a hike. Nature fans will also enjoy the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley, a tranquil 34-acre gem located above the main campus in Strawberry Canyon. Also in the hills is the Lawrence Hall of Science, a great place to take curious children. Worn out from all that walking? Take a load off in one of Berkeley’s many coffee shops. Try the Guerilla Café, a cozy spot on Shattuck Ave. in the Gourmet Ghetto. Yes, you read that right. The North Berkeley neighborhood was given that nickname in the late 1970s and is anchored by Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse, the farm-to-table restaurant at the epicenter of the local food movement. Before you leave town, take in the sweeping views from the 307-foot Sather Tower (commonly known as the Campanile) on campus, which is the third-tallest bell and clock tower in the world.

- TOWN TRIPS BURLINGTON, VT.

Schools to see: Champlain College, University of Vermont Around town: This bustling college town is nestled on the shores of beautiful Lake Champlain. But let’s get real: The best reason to head this far north in Vermont is to see how ice cream is made and sample fun flavors at the Ben & Jerry’s factory, a quick 30-minute drive east in Waterbury. (The first Ben & Jerry’s shop was in a renovated gas station on the corner of St. Paul and College Street in Burlington. Sadly, it’s no longer there.) But there’s more beyond ice cream. The Church Street Marketplace is a pedestrian mall with historic buildings, interesting shops, cafés and craft vendors. It’s a great place to people-watch and soak up the city’s artsy vibe. Another popular spot is the Burlington Farmers’ Market, held in City Hall Park during warm weather and indoors on St. Paul Street in the colder months. Stock up on locally made treats from Vermont farmers, cheese makers, bread bakers and more. Walk off all that food at the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont, which, incidentally, is one of the nation’s oldest universities, having been chartered in 1791. The museum features more than 20,000 objects that span the history of civilization. Another interesting stop is the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, an aquarium and science center located right on the water. Hungry? Grab dinner at Farmhouse Tap & Grill, a farmto-table gastropub famous for its craft beers, burgers and entrees like the bourbon-braised Adams Farm chicken and polenta.

ANN ARBOR, MICH.

Schools to see: University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University (Ypsilanti) Around town: Taking in a game at Michigan Stadium (the largest stadium in the U.S. and aptly nicknamed The Big House) should be your first priority if it’s football season, but there are plenty of other things do while in Ann Arbor. Grab a local treat for breakfast at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market, open Saturdays year round, then wander the brick streets of historic Kerrytown (named after County Kerry in Ireland) and peruse the locally owned shops selling everything from clothing to handmade art. Once you’ve worked up an appetite for lunch, pop into Zingerman’s Deli for one of its famous gigantic sandwiches. Don’t miss Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor for more unique boutiques, bookstores, cafes and great people watching. Feeling adventurous? Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle down the Huron River. Or enjoy the outdoors in a more relaxed fashion by strolling through the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum on the U of M campus. By now, you’re probably exhausted, so head to the Michigan Theater and enjoy an independent or classic film while marveling at the historic building, which opened in 1928.

AUSTIN, TEXAS

Schools to see: University of Texas, St. Edward’s University Around town: Have you heard the saying “Keep Austin Weird”? Well, get ready to experience what the weird is all about. This quirky, liberal town is unlike the rest of Texas, even though it’s the capital of the Lone Star State. Music reigns here (and not just during the South by Southwest music festival), so make seeing some live music your No. 1 to-do. Walk along Red River Street or 6th Street for lots of options, but never fear, live music can be found in dive bars and other venues all over town. The other must-do while in Austin is to eat barbeque. There are countless meat meccas in town, but standouts include Franklin Barbecue, La Barbecue, Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q and Freedmen’s. When you’ve had your fill, wipe that sauce off your hands and get shopping. Some spots to check out include Uncommon Objects, an antiques store in South Austin that sells everything from vintage jewelry to oddities like skulls, and I Luv Video, the “oldest and largest video store in the world.” If the Texas heat is getting to you, take a dip in the Barton Springs Pool, a 1,000-foot long limestone pool fed by several underground springs. Fun fact: A young Robert Redford learned to swim there when he was visiting family in Austin. The pool is within Zilker Park, which is a great place for a picnic or to take a bike ride (you can rent wheels).

POWER FOOD

Cool as a

cucumber

THIS SUMMER FAVORITE IS A LOWCALORIE, TASTY WAY TO STAY HYDRATED AS THE WEATHER WARMS. Whether you enjoy them plain, pickled, dipped, dressed or diced, cucumbers are a refreshing and nutritious treat, and their natural cooling effect makes them even more desirable in the summer months. Grown on a vine, cucumbers are part of the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes watermelon, pumpkin, zucchini and squash. POWER UP Cucumbers are at least 95 percent water, making them ideal if you want to avoid dehydration and cut calories (only 16 in one cup), but being high in water means they’re not so great if you’re hoping for a nutrient-dense snack. Still, somehow cukes manage to cram 17 micrograms of vitamin K (about 22 percent of the daily recommended value) into a cup. Vitamin K helps the blood to clot properly, preventing excessive bleeding, and allows the body to use calcium as a bone builder. Cucumbers also contain trace amounts (less than 5 percent of your daily value) of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, copper, biotin and vitamin B1, and they’re rich in numerous antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation. There are less conventional benefits

52

too. According to a study published in Fitoterapia, a journal focusing on the medicinal uses of plants, cucumbers may be effective in removing waste materials from the body, reducing swelling and puffiness (hence the cucumber eye covers at many spas) and soothing sunburn. They’re also useful in fending off bad breath, especially if you mix them with mint, a deliciously refreshing combination. Of course, we can’t talk about the cucumber without mentioning its brined brother, the pickle. Although much higher in sodium (785 milligrams in one pickle) than plain cucumbers, pickles have the benefit of being fermented, which can promote good gut health and may stabilize blood sugar levels, a recent study reported. Also, some endurance athletes believe that drinking pickle juice can relieve post-workout muscle cramps (one can even purchase a shot-sized bottle of pickle juice, no cucumber included, for this purpose), but this remedy has yet to receive an official backing from medical authorities. BUY/STORE/SERVE Cucumbers just missed making the 2017

“Dirty Dozen,” a list by the Environmental Working Group of produce with high levels of pesticide residue, ranking 13, so buy organic when you can. The most common types found in grocery stores are the slicing cucumber (the thick variety with a waxed skin to preserve moisture) and the English cucumber (long and skinny with a thinner skin wrapped in plastic, which does the work of the wax). Both are good to eat, as long they’re firm and unblemished. But if you’re planning to pickle, you’ll want the pickling variety, which is shorter than the slicing variety, with a thick, bumpy skin. As for preparation, there’s not much you can’t do with cucumber. It goes well in salads, in chilled soups (gazpacho, anyone?) and in sandwiches (with high tea, of course). You can add slices to water (or a cocktail) to give it a boost of flavor. And don’t feel restricted by their “cool” reputation: Jersey’s own Martha Stewart recommends sautéing chunks of cucumber with butter, salt and fresh dill. —Liz Donovan

Today, Marchese’s independent spirit can be found in Salon Marsal, which he opened in Belmar in 2004 after leaving Manhattan where he’d become known in fashion and entertainment circles as one of the city’s best hair cutters and stylists. He’s now caters to clients seeking cutting-edge style and color, including the exclusive and highly specialized “Shatush” hair painting technique from Italy. “Shatush should only be handled by expert colorists trained in the process,” says Marchese about the hand-painting technique that creates a hair color that is masterfully blended, and found only at Salon Marsal.
