Garmany gives back

A

s much as we pride ourselves on offering you an impeccable selection of men’s and women’s wear, we here at Garmany love that we go beyond dressing our customers. As we embark on the season of giving and reflect back on 2018, we are honored to have supported so many meaningful organizations throughout the year and to have hosted fundraisers at our store, many of which have developed into annual signature experiences. In addition to our two annual “legacy” fundraisers in honor of Larry Garmany— No Shave November and Fashion is Art—a few others worth noting are The Boomer Esiason Foundation (Garmany Boom!), Multiple Sclerosis Association of America

(Sip & Shop Afternoon), Autism Speaks (Rhapsody in Blue), Susan G. Komen Foundation (Cars & Caffeine) and Tigger House Foundation (Holiday Cocktail Party). We are also grateful for the support and generosity of our community event partners, designers and fashion brands who helped make it all possible. Garmany also hosted a family-friendly event on Dec. 8 that helped us see this joyous time of year through children’s eyes. Guests enjoyed photos with Santa, holiday treats, crafts, complimentary gift wrapping and an exhibit featuring art created by the talented students at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft. The art will be on display at the store throughout the month of December, so stop on by to see it for yourself. And while you’re here, why not treat yourself to what’s been on your wish list all season? For the guys, we’ve got cashmere from Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana and jackets from Moncler. Ladies, you’ll love outerwear from Canada Goose and Mackage. There are even more great ideas for everyone on your list in our his and hers gift guides starting on page 11. We certainly encourage you to give back this holiday season, but be sure to reward yourself and your family and friends with a little something too! From all of us at Garmany, we wish you a happy holidays and happy New Year and hope to see you soon. Here’s to an incredible 2019!

hy don a watch that merely tells you the time when you can wear one that tells a story? Using the latest materials, the makers of these luxury pieces help us see time through an artist’s eyes. In this quietly ticking array, the centuries-old craft of grand feu enamel is brought into modern watchmaking. Marrying precision with whimsy and featuring a bevy of precious gems, these exceptional watches are as fit for a gallery as they are for your wrist. They prove that a timepiece can be much more than an accessory. It can be the masterpiece.

This page, clockwise from top left: (1) Only 50 Hublot Ultra-Thin Enamel Britto Ceramic watches were made. This handcrafted piece features painted grand feu enamel inspired by a fusion of Pop Art and Cubism. (2) Picasso was known to sport a Patek Philippe, and this 4968 model from 2018 continues the brand’s artistic tradition. The watch was inspired by the spiral arches of gymnastic ribbons and features a mother-of-pearl dial with 314 diamonds on the face and an additional 273 diamonds on the case. (3) This one-of-a-kind timepiece from the Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art, L’éloge de la Nature collection provides hands-free time reading. The design features two cranes—in Asian lore, the crane is a symbol of longevity and wisdom. (4) Ulysse Nardin marked 2017, the Year of the Rooster, with the release of the Classico Rooster watch. It comes in a 40mm 18K rose gold case. Opposite page: Van Cleef & Arpels pays homage to the celestial water sign of Pisces with a bevy of diamonds set in a white and yellow gold dial.

ESCAPE TO PORTUGAL With its vibrant cities, medieval history, beautiful architecture, fabulous food and some of the most exquisite beaches in all of Europe, Portugal is the place to go.

P

ortugal, one of Europe’s finest gems, has become a hot destination—and not just because of its year-round mild climate. The country’s welcoming people, nine centuries of history, extraordinary food and wine, gorgeous architecture and natural sights all add up to a vacation that offers something for everyone. It’s no wonder that Portugal tops many bucket lists. Since this vibrant country is relatively small—about the size of Indiana— you’re able to explore a lot in one trip. It’s also a mecca for foodies. Boasting the largest exclusive fishing zone in Europe, seafood is fresh, plentiful and affordable. The cuisine is vegetarian-friendly as well, offering hearty soups, stews and locally grown fruits and vegetables. Here are some of our favorite spots in Portugal…. HOLIDAY 2018

This page, clockwise from top left: Incredibly fresh seafood abound in Portugal; sweet port wine is produced in the northern provinces; infamous yellow trams climb the streets of Lisbon. Opposite page: Narrow cobbled streets wind past homes in Lisbon’s ancient Alfama neighborhood.

LISBON The elegant coastal city of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is home to white domed cathedrals, brightly tiled buildings and some of the country’s most famous sights, including Belém Tower, a Gothic monument from the 1500s guarding the entrance to the very harbor from which da Gama, Magellan and Columbus all embarked. Other can’t-miss destinations include the historic neighborhood of Alfama, which dates back to the Moors with its narrow cobblestone streets and indescribable charm; Águas Livres Aqueduct, a majestic 18th-century example of Portuguese engineering; St. George’s Castle, with phenomenal views of the city; and the Monastery of St. Jerome, with its highly ornate architecture. Lisbon also proudly boasts a wealth of excellent museums, including the world-renowned Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Tile Museum. Sightsee via the iconic yellow trams that traverse the hilly streets of the city, and indulge in pastel de nata, the sinfully delicious Portuguese custard tart. It’s a remarkable city that will entrance you with its sights, sounds and flavors.

HOLIDAY 2018

SINTRA Located about 20 miles northwest of Lisbon is the picturesque, hilly resort town of Sintra, dotted with pastel-colored villas, historical palaces and ancient mansions. This fairytale-like city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see, full of lush vegetation and cobblestone streets.

Opposite page: With its flamboyant architecture, Porto City Hall is one of the top attractions on Avenida dos Aliados.

46

PORTO Even farther up the coast in northwest Portugal is the magical city of Porto. The region is famed for the production of port wine, which is still stored and matured in cellars that stretch along the banks of the Douro River. Here, it’s all about having fun in the charming Ribeira District, another UNESCO World Heritage site, where cafés, bars and restaurants line the colorful cobblestone streets. Stroll across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, go for a wine tour or tasting at Vila Nova de Gaia, and discover incredible gilt carvings at the Church of St. Francis, which dates back to 1245. Harry Potter fans won’t want to miss the Livraria Lello, a bookshop with stunning architecture that served as the inspiration for Hogwarts—J.K. Rowling was actually a customer here when she was teaching English in Porto in the 1990s.

GAR.Hol18.travel.indd 46

ALGARVE REGION For Portugal’s most celebrated beaches—adorned with golden sand, crystal-clear water, rock cliffs and mystical caves—travel to the southernmost region called the Algarve. While still relatively unspoiled, here’s where you’ll find luxury oceanfront hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, chic spas, thermal baths and internationally acclaimed golf resorts. With more than 150 beaches to choose from, it’s the perfect place to unwind after days of touring up north.

Rib eye. Tenderloin. Skirt steak. Whatever your preference, one of these is the perfect centerpiece for your holiday feast.

what’s your beef?

11/14/18 2:03 PM

ROTISSERIE OF RIB EYE BEEF

INGREDIENTS n 3¼ lbs. rib eye beef FOR THE MARINADE n 1 Tbs. coarse freshly ground black pepper n 1 Tbs. chopped rosemary leaves n 3 garlic cloves, ground into a smooth paste n 2 tsp. celery seeds n 3 Tbs. canola oil n 2 tsp. brown sugar n zest and juice of 1 lemon n sea salt FOR THE SAUCE n 3 Tbs. sour cream or crème fraîche n 5 Tbs. horseradish sauce n 1 Tbs. heavy cream n 1 tsp. sugar n squeeze of 1 lemon n sea salt and freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS STEP ONE: Roll the beef into a neat, round shape and tie at intervals with a butcher’s string. For the marinade, mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Rub into the meat, covering the whole roast, and leave to marinate for 1–2 hours. Set the rotisserie at its medium setting. (If you do not have a rotisserie, you can cook this dish on a barbecue grill.) STEP TWO: Thread the beef onto the rotisserie skewer and place on the rotisserie. Season and cook for about 1 hour for a rare piece of beef. Reduce the heat if the meat browns too quickly. Leave to rest in a warm place for 20 minutes. STEP THREE: For the sauce, mix all the ingredients in a bowl and season well. Cut the beef into thin slices and serve with the sauce.

POUR IT ON!

Four who excel in the making of liquor reveal where they go for a well-made drink. ith the possible exception of the ocean, alcohol is the most cosmopolitan liquid there is. That’s why a producer of bitters in Munich can tell you where to bend your elbow in Denver, while a New York distiller directs you to a Barcelona barstool. Drawn from the recent book Straight Up: The Insiders’ Guide to The World’s Most Interesting Bars and Drinking Experiences, here’s where four top booze-makers like to go for a splendidly concocted cocktail.

Allen Katz New York Distilling Company, New York City

| |

HOLIDAY 2016 HOLIDAY 201875 75

BOOZY BACKSTORY: Before co-founding the New York Distilling Company in 2011, Allen Katz had experience in both the food and beverage industries. He helped run Toscana Saporita, a cooking school in Tuscany; he worked with Slow Food USA, which promotes local food and traditional cooking; and he was the director of spirits education and mixology for Southern Wine & Spirits, one of the country’s largest distributors. He even hosted a show called The Cocktail Hour on Martha Stewart’s now-defunct Sirius XM satellite radio station. BEST KNOWN FOR: The distiller’s Dorothy Parker American Gin and Mister Katz’s Rock & Rye spirits are now considered part of the canon for mixologists and are stocked behind the bars of many discerning alcohol alchemists. Katz has been called the modern face of New York City’s distilling scene. FAVORITE WATERING HOLES: Barcelona’s Boadas, a bar that “sings of the romance of cocktail culture. The rhythm of the thrown cocktails, the vibrancy of Las Rambla [a street in the Spanish city] and the daydream of generations of happy drinkers.” Katz also enjoys throwing back a few at Death & Co in New York City, Dukes Bar in London and French 75 in New Orleans. TIP FOR GETTING TOASTED: At McSorley’s Ale House (shown above right), thought to be the oldest bar in New York City, Katz’s advice is to “go in the afternoon and spend the evening with a good friend. The time passes simply and joyously in a perfect pub environment that exudes the classic character of the city.” ONE FOR THE ROAD: The New York Distilling Company produces three types of gin, a rye and a whiskey. So, when Katz gets thirsty, what’s his poison? A rye whiskey Manhattan, straight up with a lemon twist.

BOOZY BACKSTORY: If Guinness is good for you, Bellfield is better. Kieran Middleton (shown above left) is the brewer and business development manager at this Edinburgh, Scotland-based craft-beer maker he helped launch in 2016. Middleton and his team spent months locked away in a tiny kitchen experimenting with gluten-free, vegan beers until he cooked up a recipe to rival any glutenfull suds on tap. BEST KNOWN FOR: Cracking the code for making gluten-free beer that tastes like actual beer. Bellfield Brewery is the U.K.’s first microbrewery to use traditional brewing methods with nontraditional ingredients to ferment India pale ales (IPAs) and pilsners for gluten-averse brewski fans. These beers also are certified by the Coeliac U.K. and the Vegan Society. FAVORITE WATERING HOLES: Middleton’s hometown recommendation is Staggs Bar in Musselburgh, Scotland. “The beer is why you’re here,” he says. “Unlike many modern craft bars, this one treats beer with reverence and celebrity. The star of the show is Oakham Ales Green Devil. At 6 percent, you can easily have too much of this pale and intensely hoppy beauty.” Middleton also recommends Bad Martha in Martha’s Vineyard, Warpigs in Copenhagen and Covenhoven in Brooklyn, N.Y. TIP FOR GETTING TOASTED: Middleton says the world of craft beer can be a bit of a minefield; he recommends sticking to the style of beer you like. Still, you can experiment with sours and exotic combinations when you fancy a change and feel brave. ONE FOR THE ROAD: This craft brewer is partial to craft whiskey too. “I love the development of all things produced in small batches by Scottish artisan producers—Scottish malt whiskey, gins with interesting botanicals—and I love a bit of Pinot Noir,” Middleton says.

Stephan Berg The Bitter Truth, Munich

BOOZY BACKSTORY: Disappointed with the available selection of what he calls the unsung ingredient of the dandy drink scene, this former Munich bartender handmade his own bitters for years. Then, in 2006, Stephan Berg co-founded The Bitter Truth. Today, his distillery is credited with revolutionizing the cocktail scene with uncommonly good bitter flavors. WHAT HE IS KNOWN FOR: Being the godfather of the German bitters milieu (yes, such a milieu exists). FAVORITE WATERING HOLES: American Bar at The Savoy in London (shown above left), says Berg, has “a great team, great hospitality and more than 100 years of history.” Others include Dante in New York, Williams & Graham in Denver and Lobster Bar in Hong Kong. TIP FOR GETTING TOASTED: Make the most of your travels by checking out local mixology touches. “Trends still veer toward very classic-style drinks, but local ingredients play into the modern bar scene,” Berg says. ONE FOR THE ROAD: Ex-bartender Berg seeks out the rock stars in his former profession. That’s why you’ll find him sipping highballs at one eponymous Munich tavern—“a melting pot of locals, artists and fashionistas all held together by Charles Schumann. It has warm hospitality, fantastic drinks and even better food.”

11/14/18 2:06 PM

BOOZY BACKSTORY: Among firewater aficionados, Jared Brown is known as a respected cocktail historian, European bon viveur and master distiller at Sipsmith, London’s first gin micro-distillery in more than two centuries. But this man who— along with Sipsmith co-founders Sam Galsworthy and Fairfax Hall—is credited with igniting a full-blown British gin craze is actually a Yankee, originally from Upstate New York. BEST KNOWN FOR: Reflecting the spirit of old England by making gin the oldfashioned way—in one shot (meaning the botanicals are steeped in the fermented sugar water or a neutral spirit like tea), in a copper pot and in small batches. FAVORITE WATERING HOLES: Tops is El Floridita in Havana. Brown says he and his wife, fellow spirits expert Anistatia Miller, asked the El Floridita bartender to make them whatever he was in the mood to mix. He poured the couple their very first Jai Alai, a cocktail made of gin and sweet vermouth topped with soda and a lemon wedge. “It is a wonderful drink that actually predates the Negroni,” says Brown. He also enjoys bellying up to the bar at The Drifter, a Prohibition-era speakeasy with eccentric nightly entertainment and a tarot card-inspired cocktail menu tucked away in the basement of The Green Door Tavern in Chicago; the Paradiso, a modern-day speakeasy reached through a refrigerator door in a pastrami shop in Barcelona; and The Kingham Plough, a favorite hometown pub in The Cotswolds, England. TIP FOR GETTING TOASTED: “When I go into a bar, the first thing I look for is the greeting,” Brown says. “It tells me how the service is going to be.” ONE FOR THE ROAD: When Brown was a broke college student living in New York City, he’d walk 50 blocks to school to save his subway money for food and one luxury: a monthly martini at the Ty Bar in the Four Seasons Hotel (shown above left). “I would be treated with as much respect as the billionaires,” he recalls.
