THE

GARMANY GUIDE CHANGE CAN BE GOOD…

SOCCER MOM ROCKS

What began as a way to keep Liz Jonas’ creative hands busy during her kids’ soccer games is now an established jewelry chain with rock stars (Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses) and actors (Johnny Depp) as customers. Liz is part of the mother-daughter team at Jonas Studio. She’s a painter/sculptor who’s in charge of the designs; daughter Christine does the marketing and some production. The jewelry is organic: beads, stones, charms, shells, shark teeth and such, gathered from all over the world. And it’s available at Garmany.

…But change for its own sake can be tiring. So the menswear brand Loro Piana doesn’t fuss about the latest trend. Whether it’s cashmere from China and Mongolia, vicuña from the Andes or wool from Australia and New Zealand, Loro Piana simply strives for the world’s finest yarns and fabrics—then keeps relentlessly improving its collections. That’s change you can believe in. And you’ll see it at Garmany.

|

How can you hang onto your childhood and yet fool people by appearing adult? A good start is Golden Goose formal sneakers (yes, there is such a thing) and casual shoes. Wear them on a night out and you’ll feel like a kid again. Their distressed look is both playful and trendy, and in the 17 years they’ve been around they’ve attained an almost cultish following with men and women and become collectibles. (Don’t let your wife throw them out!) Ask for Golden Goose at Garmany and discover your footwear fountain of youth.

THE GARMANY GUIDE BOOMER SCORES WITH GARMANY

Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason looked good in shoulder pads and a helmet, but we think he’s at his best wearing a suit. Garmany is back for another season as Esiason’s official wardrobe provider for his weekly appearances on Showtime’s Inside the NFL. While making a statement with his words, the on-air personality likes to make a statement with his style. And off-the-rack just won’t do for the ex-football star—he’s a madeto-measure guy. “When you’re on TV, it’s important to look the part and dress well,” Esiason has said. “After receiving my first suit from Garmany, I can tell you, I’m the best-dressed guy on Showtime.” Though there’s some stiff sartorial competition on the show—Esiason’s co-hosts this year include James Brown, Ray Lewis and Phil Simms—we agree with Boomer! Of course, Garmany’s relationship with him goes beyond shirts and ties. The store is a supporter of the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which raises money for cystic fibrosis awareness and research. Check out what our star is wearing on Inside the NFL, which airs at 9 p.m. every Tuesday throughout the football season on Showtime.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

22

All leathers aren’t created equal, and it’s nonsense to settle for an inferior one. That brings us to Ettinger. Its fine English leather has been the real deal since 1934, and it continues to manufacture in the U.K. The company has been awarded a royal warrant—official recognition for supplying the royal family, in this case Prince Charles. Ettinger has served Britain’s royalty; now it serves America’s— the customers at Garmany.

GEORGIA ON YOUR MIND?

VINEYARD HAVEN

Did you know New Jersey ranks seventh in the nation in wine production? Winemaking here has exploded in the past 10 years, with 46 vineyards now operating in the state. Our climate and soil have always had a potential for “grapeness,” but it took changes to two laws to really fuel the industry’s growth. These wineries not far from Red Bank are worth a visit: • Fox Hollow Vineyards sits on 94 acres in nearby Holmdel. It’s owned and operated by the Casola family, sixth-generation farmers who decided to diversify. Open for tastings Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the winery also offers special events such as farm-to-table dinners and paint-and-sip evenings. foxhollowvineyards.com • Located in beautiful horse country in Colts Neck, 4JG’s Vineyard sits on a farm that dates back to the early 1700s. The Giunco family, making wine there since 2002, has taken home gold medals in several wine competitions. Check their website for various wine events on upcoming weekends, including Wings and Wine, Meet the Winemakers and, in October, a Not-So-Haunted Wine Walk. 4jgswinery.com • Working Dog Winery in Robbinsville sells more than 3,500 cases of wine annually, 95 percent directly at its vineyard, so you know it’s doing something right. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday and often features live music. workingdogwinerynj.com • Cream Ridge Winery has been around since 1988 and has won six Governors Cup Awards. Its tasting room is open seven days a week so you can try its many handcrafted reds, whites and fruit wines (the AlmondBerry is a favorite). creamridgewines.com • Named after the owners’ mothers, Laura and Rita, Laurita Winery in New Egypt bottled its first wine in 2003 and has been growing ever since. Its tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday, and it often hosts events such as grape stomping and a girls’ night out. A nice bonus? Active military personnel get 10 percent off. lauritawin ery.com

Fans hungry for the work of one of our celebrated artists will grab Dinner with Georgia O’Keeffe (Assouline, $50). In it, author Robyn Lea explains that food wasn’t just fuel for O’Keeffe, it was an art form. Lea pored over O’Keeffe’s archives and interviewed people who knew her to identify the dishes she held dear and includes recipes and notes about the artist’s personal touches. The food is as colorful as you’d expect from O’Keeffe, who lived for years in vibrant New Mexico. By juxtaposing culinary creations with her work—the blood red of a bourbon steak with her 1931 painting “Dark and Lavender Leaves,” for example— the book illustrates good taste at its tastiest.

THE GARMANY GUIDE WHO’S UP AT THE BASIE?

GET THE IDEA?

Since 1999, Theory menswear has been a go-to for guys with a taste for sharp, minimalist designs. Its pieces wear well and remain relevant season after season. And now Theory is back at Garmany. When you’re wearing this line, you’ve got the “strong, silent” thing going on and your confidence speaks for itself. That’s the theory behind Theory.

GARMANY GIVES BACK

Garmany is committed to lending a hand to others in the community, especially during the season of giving. Last year, the store teamed with the Tigger House Foundation to raise money to reduce the death rate of heroin and opiate addiction. A Shop with Santa fundraiser gave customers a chance to make gingerbread houses, enter raffles and snap photos with Jolly Old Saint Nick and participate in a holiday Mannequin Challenge. In addition, a portion of Garmany’s sales was donated to the foundation. In total, Tigger House received $11,000 from the benefit. There’s more fun and fundraising in store. Stay tuned!

RAISE A GLASS

Triumph Brewing Company’s planned Red Bank location has been “brewing” for years, ever since it was approved along with the West Side Lofts project back in 2011. But our long wait for the restaurant and brew pub is nearly over! After undergoing extensive interior construction for the past two years, the restaurant’s beer vats were recently delivered, and at presstime an opening was imminent. Triumph, which has locations in Princeton and New Hope, Pa., is owned by Adam Rechnitz, son of Joan and Robert Rechnitz, who founded the Two River Theater in Red Bank, only steps from the new brew pub. “I like the west side of town,” says Rechnitz, who grew up in the borough. “I like being in the arts and antiques district, and soaking in its funkier vibe.” With homemade suds and upscale tavern food, the newest Triumph promises to be just that.

From Beethoven to Bernadette Peters, from “doo-wop” to the political satire of The Capitol Steps, you’ll find great entertainment this season at Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre. Check the website for the latest, but here’s the planned schedule: Oct. 5: Dixie’s Tupperware Party Oct. 6: Bernadette Peters Oct. 7: An Evening of Doo-Wop Oct. 8: Yes Oct. 11: The Psychedelic Furs Oct. 13: Pink Floyd Laser Spectacle Oct. 14: New Jersey Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Oct. 17: The Price Is Right: Live! ENGLISH CLASS

24

We associate sophistication, class and luxury with the English, and in the case of Dunhill accessories that’s spot on. Alfred Dunhill started at 15 as an apprentice in his family’s harness-making business in London. He changed the company’s direction; it became a prime source of men’s luxury accessories known for innovation and excellence. By the time he died in 1959 at 87, the Dunhill brand was worldrenowned and -respected. Jolly good show, Alfred! See the collection—pens, flasks, leather bags and more—at Garmany.

THE GARMANY GUIDE LOOK AT THOSE LEAVES

When the weather turns crisp and the leaves explode into an array of gorgeous reds, oranges and yellows, there’s nothing better than hopping in the car for a scenic trip to check out the foliage. The best time to go is mid-October, when fall is in full swing. Here are a few of our favorite routes: Skyline Drive: In northern New Jersey, this almost six-mile road runs between Oakland and Ringwood, passing through Ringwood State Park. There are many overlooks with beautiful views of Ramapo Mountain State Forest, and if you’ve got time, head to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens (just 10 minutes north of Skyline Drive) for 90 acres of gardens and natural scenery. Delaware River Scenic Byway: Begin driving on Route 29 in Hamilton Township, and you’ll be following the river north to Frenchtown, taking in about 35 miles of spectacular color. In 2009, this picturesque route was designated a National Scenic Byway. The Pine Barrens Byway: This 130-mile route uses existing roadways through the vast New Jersey Pine Barrens in Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean counties, including portions of 16 municipalities. The name refers to the area’s nutrient-poor soil, but this land actually supports a vast forest that offers gorgeous scenery this time of year. There are three different sections: northern, central and southern.

FUNNY, THEY DON’T SOUND ITALIAN

• David Naman is an internationally known sportswear brand now making waves in North America. How would we describe this line? Sophisticated, elegant and cool, with youthful, understated designs. Eponymous founder Naman built his company from the ground up, and it reflects his youthful focus and energy. And yes, it’s Italian. • Speaking of Davids, the hills of Carrara, Italy, provided the marble Michelangelo used to create the immortal sculpture of that name, and that’s where you’ll find the headquarters of JW Brine. This company has been creating authentic, high-quality men’s trousers for more than 35 years. Its goal: perfect-fitting pants. So how did an Italian company wind up with that name? The founder, on one of his globe-trotting trips, was checking out a vintage shop when he stumbled upon a pair of old U.S. Army pants. Stitched into the pants was the soldier’s name: James W. Brine. A new masculine brand was born. You’ll find both JW Brine and David Naman at Garmany.

HE’S ALMOST ITALIAN

If being Italian were a matter of expertise, fashion guru Hugo Jacomet would be right there with pasta and that leaning tower. His new book, The Italian Gentleman: The Master Tailors of Italian Men’s Fashion (Rizzoli, $53) gives an in-depth look at the designers, tailors and artisans who for generations have defined Italian style. In its lavishly illustrated pages, more than 50 iconic Italian menswear fashion houses are celebrated for creating the world’s finest men’s clothing—with neckwear, shoes and accessories very much included. Surely we can forgive Hugo for being, you know, French.

IT’S A BEAUT

Beauty junkies, rejoice! High-end cosmetics and skin care boutique Cos Bar is now open next to Tiffany’s downtown, offering makeup, fragrance, hair and skin care products for men and women. Need help figuring out exactly what you need? Staffers here know their stuff and will help you zero in on the right products. (They’ll often throw in free samples with your purchase so you can try something new.) With Jo Malone scent diffusers, Molton Brown lotions, Nest candles and much more, it’s a great place to pick up a gift too. 105 BROAD ST., RED BANK, 732.301.6536, COSBAR.COM

GET THE RAMY BROOK LOOK

28

GAR.fw17.guide2.indd 28

Growing up, Ramy Brook was the friend who always knew how to put together an outfit—and she’s doing it for the world today! Since launching her brand in 2010, Ramy Brook has been creating contemporary womenswear through the use of vibrant colors, sophisticated silhouettes and the best fabrics from around the globe. She designs for women to “exude confidence, knowing they are sexy, wearing something special and looking their absolute best.” From dresses (we love the Aidan and Quinn styles!) and knee-high boots to clutches and bags, Ramy Brook always gives you the right look! That’s why it’s the favorite among Hollywood’s leading ladies like Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale and Julianna Marguiles. Stop by Garmany and let us introduce you to the brand.

ATTENTION, EXERCISERS

Shouldn’t your workout wear look as good as you do? And be as tough? Along comes Rhone activewear, your perfect workout partner. The creation of weekend warriors, it’s both practical and stylish. Rhone is built to be comfortable, but it works hard too, with moisture-wicking construction and anti-odor technology. Don’t sweat it: Garmany has the workout gear you need.

As many already know, Garmany is a proud supporter of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), and residents of central and southern New Jersey now have easier access to the facility’s world-class care. Memorial Sloan Kettering Monmouth, which opened in Middletown Township this past winter, is the hospital’s second site in the Garden State and provides the same top-notch services as other MSK locations. How much does Garmany support MSK? Look at the guys on staff during the month of November. The gents grow beards and moustaches for their No Shave November event, which culminates with the store’s annual shave-off fundraiser for MSK. It’s held in honor of Larry Garmany, who was treated by the MSK team.

ASK MR. ETIQUETTE

Johnell Garmany explains how to sail through life without giving offense. I’ve prepped myself for a job interview more aggressively than Presidential candidates practice for televised debates. I have a fresh résumé, a sharpened pencil and a brand-new legal pad. Now, what do I wear to telegraph a pulled-together, I’m-serious-about-this-job look? —Rattled in Red Bank A suit. An interviewee should dress conservatively, in either navy or charcoal, solid or with a subtle plaid or stripe. And fit is important, so your suit should be properly tailored and pressed. On that acceptable foundation, give yourself some leeway for self-expression. Your dress shirt should be solid, striped or with a small check. Go for soft colors that complement your skin tone. Choose an attractive tie that makes you stand out without appearing showy. Shoes should be classic with a fresh polish. Look at your prospective employer’s website for an idea of what executives are wearing in their photos. LinkedIn profiles will also help.

A NICE RING TO IT Let’s face it: Wearing a fitness monitor on your wrist isn’t as fashionable as wearing a Shinola watch. Thankfully, Motiv has developed a titaniumencased fitness tracking ring (available in slate or rose gold) that counts steps and calories and even monitors sleep. You’re gonna wanna put a ring on it! $199.

BREATH OF FRESH AIR Whether you believe in global warming or not, Plume Labs’ Flow will tell you the truth about air pollution. Attach it to your bag or belt with the leather strap, and monitor indoor and outdoor air quality, humidity and temperature. It then connects with mobile devices to alert users of current conditions and suggests routes to safer surroundings. $150.

These high-tech toys might not be a true necessity, but need-schmeed— we want ’em!

The Project Valerie by Razer is the world’s first laptop with three monitors, and it also comes equipped with a top-of-the-line graphics card and technology that ensures the multi-display action is perfect. Of course, the machine will pick up Wi-Fi, so feel free to spread out when you set up at the coffeeshop. Price not available at press time.

MUSIC

TRAIL MIX

Doesn’t your next journey deserve a memorable soundtrack? These breakthrough artists belong in the queue. By Mark Dowden

EARL ST. CLAIR

Earl Johnson II, known by the stage name Earl St. Clair, began his musical career as a producer and writer. He claims he didn’t even know he could sing until recently. But sing he can, in a husky, gutsy voice that lingers in memory. His musical style—gritty, soulful and swaggering—is equally reminiscent of James Brown and Outkast. Of his debut album, St. Clair has said that he wanted to make something original, something that would last for more than 10 years, something that makes people feel. Give a listen, and you’ll agree that he succeeded. The album: My Name Is Earl Go-to song: “Ain’t Got It Like That” Deeper dives: “Perfect” with Bibi Bourelly and “Good Time”

CHICANO BATMAN

I’m not sure I’m equipped to explain the retro Latino power vibe of Chicano Batman, an L.A. foursome that’s been making the rounds of Bonnaroo, Coachella and some of the other big festivals. The band has a one-of-a-kind sound that blends funk, psychedelica, Brazilian Tropicalia, pop from the 1960s and ’70s, and other genres in songs that are slightly weird and very wonderful. While their latest album displays the broadest range yet, all the tracks are unite by a common thread of grooviness. The album: Freedom Is Free Go-to song: “Friendship (Is a Small Boat in a Storm)” Deeper dives: “Jealousy” and “Angel Child”

JASON ISBELL The musical journey of Jason Isbell began in northern Alabama, where family taught him to play various instruments, beginning with the mandolin (easy for a kid to grip) at age 6. After a stint in the Driveby Truckers, Isbell set out on his own, recording a series of solo efforts and albums with his band, the 400 Unit. His 2015 album, Something More Than Free, debuted at No. 1 on three Billboard charts—rock, folk and country. His 2017 release, The Nashville Sound, which is up for CMA Album of the Year, raises the bar for articulate Americana. The album: The Nashville Sound Go-to song: “Tupelo” Deeper dives: “Codeine” and “Alabama Pines” from Here We Rest

ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER

After performing as the indie duo The Fiery Furnaces, siblings Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger embarked on solo careers in 2011. Eleanor, a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, creates airy, acoustic pop that occasionally deals with dark themes. Her latest album, New View, has been called “keenly observed, totally genuine and eminently listenable.” Fun fact: The Spoon song “Anything You Want” and the Franz Ferdinand song “Eleanor Put Your Boots On” are both written about her. The album: New View Go-to song: “He Didn’t Mention His Mother” Deeper dives: “Open Season” and “Because I Asked You”

THE GARMANY GUIDE

ELEMENTS

OF MEN’S STYLE ...in which Johnell Garmany solves your sartorial dilemmas. What are the latest trends in tailored clothing? Suits keep softening. Specifically, the shoulders have gotten softer, which creates a more casual look. We’re selling a lot of open patchpocket suits, also a little more casual. They’re nice because you can break up the suit and wear the jacket and pants separately, so you’re basically getting three outfits in one. What else is new in men’s suits? Three-piece suits are big. With the weather turning colder, they’re good for this time of year. The double-breasted suit has been making a comeback for the past few seasons. We’re seeing a lot of it in made to measure. It’s a very sophisticated look, kind of a throwback to a more elegant time. They are great for the guy who wears a suit every day and wants something new.

like sweatshirts, but they’re done in really nice fabrics like cashmere.

I’ve seen guys wearing sneakers with their suits. Is that really OK? Yes, we’re seeing a blurring of the lines between tailored clothing and sportswear. Men are wearing suits with a pair of sneakers. That’s a big thing right now. It absolutely can be done with the right sneakers.

I need new jeans. What should I look for? We’re seeing a lot of ripped jeans right now. Distressed is a big trend.

What do you suggest for sneakers then? Golden Goose and Common Projects are on fire right now. They both work well dressed up or dressed down. And we’ve carried Lanvin sneakers for the past seven years, and they are still going strong. What should I look for in terms of dress shoes? Men are really starting to find their own personal style, which is great. They want to wear something that is different from everyone else. So that might be a burnished leather loafer with a three-piece suit, or they might stand out with a color that is more unusual or a pair of velvet pumps (a formal slip-on shoe). What’s new in sportswear? Pleated pants are coming back. But these aren’t the pleated pants from 10 years ago. They are done in a more updated way, a little shorter and trimmer at the bottom. In shirts, the sweatshirt silhouette is big right now. The garments look

Won’t I look homeless? No [laughing]. Wear them with an Oxford shirt and a pair of loafers, and the overall look isn’t too casual. What are you seeing in outerwear? Puffer coats are doing extremely well. We have puffers from Brunello Cucinelli, Moncler, Canada Goose, Kjus. Because layering is key this time of year, we’re showing a puffer vest with a little less fill worn under a sportcoat. The overcoat is also making a comeback. For a while, people were wearing a more casual coat over their suits and sportcoats. Men are tired of that. If they are wearing a suit, they want to look a little dressier. I also think the leather jacket is going make a big comeback this season. What fashion faux pas drives you crazy? I can’t stand pants that are too long. If you like a longer pant, have it with a nice break but not like it hasn’t been hemmed for you. I need to find a gift for my boyfriend. What do you suggest? We carry some great cufflinks from Deakin & Francis. My favorites: skulls with troll hair. They’re pretty cool. You could also do a pocket square. We have some that are very colorful and others that are a little more understated. And a scarf from Loro Piana would be a good choice. They are the softest cashmere and feel awesome. Better yet, get him all three!

| GARMANY

What about color and pattern for suiting? Red has been fun this season. And we’re start-

ing to see stripes making a comeback. And, of course, windowpanes are still strong.

BELSTAFF AW17 MEN’S AND WOMEN’S COLLECTION

“JOLLY ROGER”

FOR AUTUMN/WINTER 17, Menswear

and Womenswear are unified in a theme rich with Belstaff’s military heritage: the “Jolly Roger” naval and submariner inspired collection is both tribute and testament to the incredible clothing worn by the British Royal Navy throughout WWII. It had to endure the harshest of conditions while at sea, protecting sailors, boatswains and submariners alike, and it was upon the ocean that the genesis of the four-pocket waxed cotton motorcycle jacket was born. The collection then interprets the harsh realities of life at sea through colour, fabric diversity and an array of special vintage wax treatments for a worn-in look. Classic maritime silhouettes such as the pea coat and duffle coat have been faithfully reproduced in luxury Melton wool, while waterproof hand-waxed cotton and leather reinforce the stylish functionality of naval outerwear. The parka plays an integral role this season, emphasised by a technical foul-weather

BELSTAFF RIGHT.indd 1

version based on a Belstaff archive piece that was created for the military in 1960. Collection Creative Director, Delphine Ninous says “The formal naval-inspired pieces are contrasted with a more rugged and free-spirited look appropriate to downtime on the docks. This sense of temporary escapism is reflected in edgier elements such as naval tattoo designs and the Jolly Roger flag, giving a sense of rebellion and individuality.” Sharing the same colour palette across menswear and womenswear, this season focuses on industrial tones of red, brown, blue and military green, particularly throughout Belstaff’s core pieces. Charcoal grey, black and true navy form a base from which emerge brighter hues such as spruce teal, sanderling, cardinal red and burnished gold. In leather and waxed cotton, colours have been given an aged effect for a unique patina. Much brighter and more vibrant colours are found in the naval tattoo motifs which add a personalised touch.

WOMEN’S TRENDS

THE LOOK

FOR FALL AND WINTER Styles range from super-sweet to oh-so-sexy.

UP YOUR SLEEVES

Statement sleeves first fluttered onto the style scene last spring, and it looks like they’re here to stay. If basics are your thing, turn to Veronica Beard, who takes the fall staple—a black sweater—to new heights with exaggerated poufs. Dress it up with a skirt and heels, or dress it down with jeans and kicks! Think bold is better? Rebecca Taylor and Cinq à Sept have a penchant for oversized ruffles. Taylor’s flouncy arm candy gives a classic trench an updated look, while Sept’s rippled frills take your everyday LBD from ordinary to extraordinary!

LADY IN RED

From smart gingham and checks to sophisticated tattersall and glen plaid, 2017’s tartan resurgence couldn’t be further from lumberjack flannels. Enter Rag & Bone’s tartan moto jacket complete with fur collar and matching scarf for a downand-daring look. Sweet more your style? Give Marissa Webb’s cute mini a twirl. Bonus: The tied drop-waist creates a sleek silhouette, while the lace effect ups the sizzle. And if you’re taking your tartan to work, Sea NY’s full-on plaid ensemble will have you looking professionally on trend.

Move over, athleisure! Dressing up for work is back, with power suits leading the charge. Boxy cuts, slouchy silhouettes and a little bedazzle are some of the edgy elements giving this classic category a revamp. Take Jonathan Simkhai’s iteration. He gives a tailored white bolero and matching pants a fierce facelift, thanks to gilded pearl embellishments—we call it formal meets fly. The power in the tailoring of Marissa Webb’s grey suited style? Relaxed wearability: Throw it on with ease, and you’ll be a badass boss in no time. And if you can’t resist a little sparkle, consider Rachel Zoe’s full-on sequin suit, which can’t help but put you in the spotlight.

| GARMANY

Womanly, powerful and sophisticated, red dominated the fall runways—with designers exploring all of its shades. Jonathan Simkhai played with maroon in an ethereal yet edgy way, his peek-a-boo lace number oozing femininity and sex appeal. Rachel Zoe’s color of choice? Burgundy. A bold shoulder and deep V give her velvet ankle-sweeping dress an extra dose of sexy. And leave it to Ronny Kobo to keep it red-hot by adding cool cutouts to an already slinky silk dress.

WOMEN’S TRENDS

HOT TIPS How to play up the season’s best new trends!

FUR-TASTIC

Fashion’s favorite fabric—fur—is timeless, wearable and always makes a strong statement. So this season, expect no less. Our hearts were aflutter over Jonathan Simkhai’s vintageinspired stoles. Drape over an elegant gown to add to the allure or atop your winter wear for an extra dose of fierce. Rebecca Taylor’s patchwork moto-inspired fur was impossible not to love. Layered over a floral dress, it screams streetchic. And at Rag & Bone, we spotted fur trimming on every one of their coats, a camo bomber lined with white fur being our favorite!

DRIPPING IN GOLD

This fall, designers are crushing on gold, choosing silks, velvets and sequins in the gorgeous jewel tone. Take, for instance, Veronica Beard’s velvet number. The chic design would look elegant on its own, but black accents toughen it up without taking away any of its sophistication. If you prefer, go all-out glam in Marissa Webb’s silky floorsweeper, which will have you looking ready for a fancy soiree at a moment’s notice! Hint: Top it off with a leather moto for a more casual vibe. Meanwhile, Rachel Zoe sticks to the glitterati theme with a sequin gold jumper that’s perfect for the holiday season (and everything in between)!

LOVELY LOAFERS

| GARMANY

It all started one summer ago when Gucci had trend-setters everywhere stepping into backless loafers. Since then, the shoe has reached cult status, and is still parading down the runways in even cooler variations. Floral jacquard, high heels and rich fabrics are giving this menswearinspired shoe a feminine touch. Stuart Weitzman’s sleek design comes in a variety of luxe shades and will pair well with just about anything from trousers and jeans to dresses and skirts. You can also opt to go city slick in Tabitha Simmons’ statement style: The black and gold motif, complete with a mink trim and dainty bow, will turn heads everywhere. Or stick to the basics with Robert Clergerie’s plush version. Navy blue velvet and a chunky heel give this classic penny loafer a chic update.

THE MUSE

Enigmatic Eva

| GARMANY

French actress Eva Green rose to fame as a sexy Bond girl—but has cemented her star in Hollywood with a string of ‘extreme’ roles. By Marisa Sandora

62

GAR.fw17.muse.indd 62

Dark and mysterious in both her personal life and the characters she portrays, Eva Green has become Hollywood’s go-to goth girl. “I like extreme, intense roles,” the 37-year-old told The San Diego Tribune. “There’s always something wrong with my characters.” To say the least. Thus far, she’s portrayed a witch in Dark Shadows, a femme fatale in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, an evil commander in 300: Rise of an Empire, a sorceress in The Golden Compass and a demon-hunting medium in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. But despite such ominous portrayals, the French actress maintains an undeniable allure, often stealing scenes from her co-stars and making audiences root for her. Green (her dad is a Swede, so it’s pronounced “Grain”) grew up in Paris and worked in theater before making her screen debut in Bernardo Bertolucci’s drama The Dreamers in 2003. But she landed on most people’s radar when she appeared as double agent Vesper Lynd in the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale. Green was initially uninterested in the role,

fearing she’d be seen as just another pretty girl riding a motorcycle in a bikini, but then she read the script. “I was surprised,” she told Moviefone. “It was quite deep, and it was based on the characters rather than the action.” The women she’s portrayed seem in direct contrast to her quiet, shy nature. “I was always hiding as a child,” she revealed to the Tribune. “I was happy when it was raining so I could hide under an umbrella.” In some ways, Green is still hiding: She’s kept her personal life out of the public eye, but she’s rumored to be dating Tim Burton—and tongues are wagging that she’s his latest muse. They first worked together on 2012’s Dark Shadows, and she then played the lead in his 2016 film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Now she’s begun work on his live-action adaptation of Dumbo, slated for release in 2019. The quirky British director and the enigmatic actress seem like the perfect pair. But really, who knows? If Green has her way, her love life—and everything else about her—will remain a mystery.

Actress Eva Green—who’s actually a natural blonde but dyes her hair to complement her coloring—often chooses dark, moody dresses but breaks up all that black with the occasional colorful showstopper.

THE LEADING MAN

Hardy Soul On or off screen, there’s a rebel streak in British actor-producer Tom Hardy.

I

Still, Hardy’s badness wasn’t just image. In youth he got caught in a stolen Mercedes with a friend—and a firearm. And his drug problem, till he got sober in 2003, was serious. “Tom, you need to wake up,” he says he told himself. We’re all jarred awake when he bares his chest—he’s seen to that, having tattooed himself with everything from Buddha to the London skyline. (Reportedly his Oscar nomination lost him a bet with DiCaprio, obliging him to add “Leo knows everything” in script to his muchdecorated bod.) But he’s interesting in clothes too. Often seen casually wearing a leather bomber jacket, ripped jeans and a T-shirt (perhaps one showing him choking Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu—he had such shirts made as a gag after a disagreement), he also cleans up with flair, as the premiere proved. The two-time dad just turned 40, and a guy does change. But even a mellower Hardy will always love outré haircuts, brass snake belt buckles and juicy villain roles. And as an actor, he’s not bad.

Clockwise from top left: Hardy cut a dapper figure at the premiere of Legend, wearing a three-piece suit and skinny tie; Hardy’s piercing blue eyes have won him legions of female fans; for the UK premiere of The Revenant, Hardy chose a grey double-breasted Burberry suit; often sporting an unkempt beard, Hardy is known for his scruffy facial hair.

FALL/WINTER 2017

s moviedom’s “bad boy” mellowing? Actorproducer Tom Hardy’s trademark feistiness about directors was AWOL in July at the London premiere of the World War II actioner Dunkirk. Wearing a three-piece, diamond-printed Gucci suit with a burgundy pocket square and a whitecollared, vertical-striped blue shirt, he purred praise for director Christopher Nolan: “I’ll do anything for him—within reason.” Maybe it’s the characters he plays. The brawny Brit left a bloody Leo DiCaprio in the woods to die in his Oscar-nominated turn in 2015’s The Revenant. But his RAF pilot in Dunkirk only assaulted the enemy from the cockpit of a Spitfire. Or maybe Hardy’s always been a secret pussycat. The son of an artist (Anne) and an ad executive/comedy writer (Edward “Chips”), he grew up in the London suburb East Sheen and oozed into acting at London’s Drama Centre, snagging 2001 roles in TV’s Band of Brothers and the movie Black Hawk Down. He’s even collaborated on projects with Dad, though his career proves he’s more than a block off the old Chips.

FEEL THE BREEZE

Named after the Andean god of wind, the Pagani Huayra Roadster is a perfect blend of performance and style that will leave its drivers breathless. Italian maker Pagani blew the roof off of the Huayra Coupe to create its airier, lighter and faster cousin. The Roadster is a true combination of innovative design and sheer power (a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged Mercedes AMG V12 ensures the latter), and it’s the ultimate ride to get from point A to point B—if your intention is to turn heads and get to your destination as fast as possible.

Because every part of the Huayra Roadster is hand-built, production of each car is expected to be slower than most. Company founder Horatio Pagani says it’s the most complicated project he’s undertaken—and that’s the reason only 100 of these supercars will be manufactured.

At 2,821 pounds, the Roadster is 176 pounds lighter than its predecessor, the Huayra Coupe. With less weight and new carbon-titanium paneling, the Roadster can complete the 0–60 sprint in a blistering sub-3 seconds. Whew!

For comfortable driving in a variety of conditions, a state-of-the-art electronic stability control system (ESC) features five modes: Wet, Comfort, Sport, Race and ESC off.

Four movable flaps—two in the front and a pair in the back—improve downforce and help maintain stability, especially when the top is down.

Pirelli developed P Zero Corsa tires specifically for the Huayra Roadster. Pagani says the tires enable 1.80 g of lateral grip—a major factor for that 0–60 time.

A large, fresh air intake and a front-end splitter help generate speed. Both were designed to optimize the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

Circular taillights on both sides of a bank of four exhaust pipes play up the curves and rounded edges of the car’s body.

The centerpiece of the Huayra Roadster’s interior is the seven-speed, single-clutch paddleshift gearbox.

In this Pacific archipelago you’ll dodge iguanas, swim with sea lions and commune with Darwin’s ghost— and that’s only part of the magic of these “enchanted” islands. By Rita Guarna

The Pacific Ocean crashes against Darwin’s Arch, a rock formation just off of Darwin Island in the background. The island is one of the smallest in the Galápagos archipelago, with an area of just one square kilometer.

t first I was reluctant. This was a cruise, and a cruiser I’m not. I cringe at the thought of prescribed mealtimes, lounge acts and forced fun, and I also tend toward motion sickness. So a proposed journey to the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific didn’t immediately float my boat. But reports of that destination’s stunning beauty and unrivaled glimpses of nature—going all the way back to 19th-century English naturalist Charles Darwin— were so persuasive, you could say my thinking evolved. I convinced myself that this once-in-alifetime journey would be worth it. Nature is indeed the Galápagos’ raison d’être. So it stands to reason that there are strict environmental regulations here and that there’s nary a golf course or chain restaurant to be found. Never mind. You can golf again when you’re back in an ordinary place. Named Las Islas Encantadas—the Enchanted Islands—by the first explorers to arrive in the 16th century, the Galápagos provides an otherworldly experience. For one thing, it’s remote: This archipelago of 19 islands (not to mention some 100-plus islets and rocks) straddles the equator more than 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Volcanic eruptions formed these parts between 3 million and 5 million years ago, making conditions quite harsh. Still, you’d have to say indigenous life adapted resourcefully; roughly 2,000 plant and animal species found here exist nowhere else in the world. This is a wildlife-watching destination on steroids, where humans play second fiddle to the all-star animal cast. Where else besides a zoo can you see penguins and tortoises on the same trip? My cruise-phobia quickly waned. It helped that we set sail on the MV Origin, a 20-passenger yacht launched last year that is part of the Ecoventura fleet. (The company has been in the expedition cruising business some 20 years and knows these islands.) Plus, we didn’t exactly have to rough it: Our stateroom was spacious and featured panoramic windows perfect for spying the area’s unique topography. And there’s a roomy Jacuzzi and fitness center on board and a library. Add to that twice-daily excursions led by certified naturalists (10 passengers per guide to ensure an intimate experience), nightly briefings and the use of wet suits (you’ll need them as the water is cold several months of the year), snorkel equip-

From top, the blue-footed booby lives mostly on water but uses land to breed and rear young. Nearly one-half of the world’s breeding pairs nest on Galápagos Islands and islets like Punta Pitt. Tourists can take a wooden staircase to the summit of a dormant volcano on Bartolomé Island, a small isle off the tip of Santiago. The Galápagos giant tortoise, which can weigh up to 920 pounds, is native to seven of the Galápagos Islands and can readily be seen in their natural habitat at Rancho El Manzanillo on Santa Cruz.

Sea stacks such as Kicker Rock can be reached by small boats, kayaks or snorkeling. Cruises around the Galรกpagos Islands take one of two routes and are under strict monitoring.

ment and kayaks, and you have the makings of a perfect trip. From our first minutes on San Cristóbal, we were confronted with creatures completely unperturbed by humans. We were told to keep our distance and not to touch them (or anything, for that matter), but they heeded no such warning about us. As if on cue, a large land iguana swaggered onto the path, its resplendent yellow skin glowing in the sunlight. Actually, it’s tough to keep clear of the lizards, tortoises and even sea lions that co-exist with us. They’re a fearless and curious lot, and while it’s a tad disconcerting at first, soon these face-to-fauna encounters are not only welcome, they’re almost expected. You can’t help but wonder if this is how Darwin felt back in 1835, when after weeks of studying the native plants and animals the young naturalist developed his theory of evolution and in so doing introduced the islands to the world. It wasn’t until 1959, however, that the archipelago became Ecuador’s first national park, and the islands were

93

9/11/17 3:09 PM

| GARMANY

named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Only time will decide which of our extraordinary encounters remain with my fellow passengers and me. Will it be the turtles gracefully swimming alongside us or our front row seat as sea lions and dolphins performed what appeared to be a carefully choreographed dance? Then there were the marine iguanas, sea snakes and sharks—yes, sharks that abounded. The islands are home to some two dozen types of sharks, from whale sharks and hammerheads to black-tip and Galápagos sharks. I’m not sure when exactly it dawned on me that this is what it means, truly, to commune with nature. On one snorkeling “tour,” for example, a manta ray swam up to me and flitted about before gliding into the deep. There’s the comical gait of the blue-footed boobies, the nimble prancers, aka Sally Lightfoot crabs, Darwin’s finches, the waved albatross, and of course, the frigatebird, whose wrinkled throat can inflate like a bright red balloon. Was it my imagination, or did these creatures all seem to share a buoyant spirit just this side of gloating? That would make sense. After all, they get to live there, while I’m reduced to obsessively plotting my next cruise.

94

GAR.fw17.travel.indd 94

This page from top: Whether in a stately room or on deck, views from the MV Origin are breathtaking. Fine dining and freshness are guranteed on the boat and on the islands. After a long day of exploring the land and sea, take a relaxing soak in the Origin’s Jacuzzi to unwind. Opposite clockwise from top: The Galápagos land iguana can be found in places like South Plaza, a small uplift with tall cliffs just off of Santa Cruz. During breeding season, the male frigatebird will inflate its wrinkled throat to attract potential mates. Darwin’s finches vary in size, from 10 to 20 centimeters. Sea stacks, tuff formations and smaller islands are accessible by kayak, available through the Origin.

Top it off with a wisteria-covered pergola for al fresco dining and you might think you were on an island off the coast of Italy or Greece. Truly a unique property and lifestyle!

Why is “boutique boxing” so popular? It’s great exercise, and the bag won’t knock you flat. By Lee Lusardi Connor

FALL/WINTER 2017 |

emember all those smoky noir boxing movies? OK, now forget ’em. Today, in certain discriminating quarters, pugilism isn’t violence. It’s a trendy fitness activity. “Look at boxers—they’re some of the leanest and most powerful athletes on the planet,” says Rob Sulaver, an American Council on Exercise-certified trainer who is founding trainer at New York City’s Rumble boxing studio. And with boxers as their inspiration, celebrities like singers Justin Bieber and Jason Derulo and actor Kevin Hart— along with a bevy of supermodels—have lately come to Rumble and other boxing “boutiques” for the exercise. They’re not risking a shiner. “We always say, ‘Get fit, not hit,’” says Cam Andrews, owner of three Title Boxing Club franchises in greater Boston. With today’s new-style boxing workout, you punch not an opponent but a heavy bag, usually in a class situation, he explains. “It’s not about fighting. It’s about getting a fighter’s workout to get in shape.” As boxing goes solo and the bag stands in for the foe, the activity also boasts new amenities—it’s offered in studios and upscale gyms unlike that sweaty Philly joint where Mickey Goldmill coached Rocky. “For a long time, if you wanted to box, you had to go into an intimidating environment, use smelly gloves and be around scary people,” says Todd Wadler, cofounder of BoxUnion in Los Angeles and West Hollywood, whose clubs feature alkaline water stations and shock-absorbent floors imported from Spain. “Now you’re seeing owners make a real investment in making locations welcoming and attractive.” Almost anyone can box for fitness, says James Lloyd, franchise development manager at Title Boxing Club International, which has 167 clubs in 36 states. “You can go into a club and see everyone from an 8-year-old to Lou in our Norwalk location, who’s taking the class at age 90, going at his own intensity.” In class, Lloyd says, a trainer should give each boxer personal attention to set his or her workout at the appropriate level. “A lot of people think of boxing as a strictly upper-body activity, but the legs are very important,” says Sulaver. “Boxing trains all major muscle groups and strengthens the core. It’s very similar to high-intensity interval training.” “Boxing is a great workout that keeps people excited and interested,” agrees Kevin Plancher, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who has advised national sports teams. “However, to avoid potentially serious head and body injuries, leave sparring with a partner to the semi-pros and pros. And when you work with a bag, use proper technique—don’t just hit as hard as you can.” He notes that up to half of all boxing-related injuries involve the hands and fingers. To protect hands, Dr. Plancher advises, use standard, heavily padded, 16-ounce boxing gloves; if the studio doesn’t provide that size, be sure your hands are taped and wrapped inside your gloves. Heavy bags filled with sand or grain provide too hard a surface, he adds; try to find a gym whose bags use a special composite foam (as BoxUnion’s do) or are mostly filled with water (as are Rumble’s). Besides its physical benefits, boxing is also a powerful way to mentally recharge, practitioners contend. Says Lloyd: “You get to release all kinds of stress.” And even if you don’t plan on giving someone a one-two punch combo, there’s satisfaction in knowing you could. “When you strap on boxing gloves,” says Sulaver, “you feel like a badass.”

By Land Or water Either way, the spunky, 140-horsepower Terraquad will surely move you. By Timothy Kelley

nwilling to stay on dry land or forswear it for the blue horizon? The Terraquad from Gibbs Amphibians may be just the vehicle for you. In less than five seconds it transitions from land to water travel— or vice versa. And it can scoot along on either with enough oomph (50 mph on land, 45 mph on water) to make your next adventure in the wild a pulsequickening thrill. This is a utility terrain vehicle with a difference: Its definition of “terrain” includes the aquatic. With the flick of a switch, the wheels fold up gently as it takes to the water. Gibbs tells us it has been working on such “high-speed amphibian” technology since 1994; this vehicle is derived from the Quadski, which parlayed a low center of gravity into unusual land-water agility. The Terraquad features side-by-side seating for two, roof bars and a rear load deck. There’s a 15-gallon gas tank, an independent coil-spring suspension with hydraulic dampers, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and a K1300CC watercooled, inline four-cylinder engine by BMW with 140 horsepower. (That’s a stallion for every character in a tweet!) It’s also, coincidentally, just a tad more than 140 inches long—11 feet, 8.2 inches—as well as 5 feet,

3 inches wide (excluding mirrors), and 6 feet, 11.5 inches high. Remember: This is a utility vehicle. Don’t call it fun—that’s not enough syllables. Instead, with a stern demeanor, praise its exemplary vehicular versatility. Take your cue from the company’s declaration that the Terraquad is “fully homologated.” (That means it’s approved for use.) After all, you’re a sophisticated adult. You have your dignity to think of, wet or dry.

When the going gets wet, the Terraquad from Gibbs Amphibians keeps on going, its wheels folding up discreetly in a five-second transition from land to water travel. We defy even a live amphibious creature to go wading in with such aplomb.

hether or not it’s the place where—as Cheers had it—“everybody knows your name,” the cocktail bar is a venerable institution. It’s where many of us recuperate from a tough day, follow our sports teams, make new friends or argue trivia with old ones. There we’re at our most convivial, and sometimes our fanciest—or grungiest—or loudest. But in recent years there’s been something new on the bar: the cocktails themselves. Oh, today’s drinks still taste good and give you a buzz. But a new generation of innovative bartenders is making them more interesting than ever. These often competitive pros are concocting new combinations, searching out novel ingredients, squeezing fresh juices from exotic fruits and making their own syrups, all in the name of your glorious good time. Meet four of them—with a cocktail recipe from each—on these pages.

NORTH Aaron Pollack The Dawson, Chicago

GAR.fw17.spirits2.indd 130

It isn’t just the Cubs that make Chicago cool. “The city is now at the forefront of the culinary and hospitality industry,” says Aaron Pollack, bar manager at The Dawson, located in an old fireplace-mantel factory in the West Town neighborhood. “We’re no longer just doing what New York or San Francisco was doing.” Pollack, 34, grew up in nearby Wheaton, Ill., and started his bar career as a University of Iowa mechanical engineering major, discus thrower and shotputter. Today he puts shots in a glass. A bartender, he believes, is one of society’s last true generalists, someone who must know a little about many things and be able to talk to anyone.

He draws on Chicago’s rich cultural mix. “One of my favorite things to do when I’m developing a new seasonal cocktail,” says Pollack, “is go to the little bodegas and Mexican grocerias in my neighborhood, Humboldt Park, and look at fruits I didn’t grow up with as an Italian-American kid. That’s how I push my boundaries.” Indeed, this genial Midwest jock is an innovative craftsman who enters worldwide cocktail competitions—in Morocco this September, for example. “I took a pay cut to come to The Dawson and really explore my cocktail game,” he says. “You make more money crankin’ beers and pourin’ shots.” Still, Pollack’s no cocktail snob. “Six or seven years ago our industry got a little pretentious,” he admits. “It was, ‘Oh, you don’t know what I’m making? Then you can’t have one!’” Today he sees—and embodies— a more welcoming approach: “I’ll tell you about it and let you try it. And if you don’t like it, I’ll make something you do like.”

EAST Harrison Ginsberg The Dead Rabbit, New York What’s this—a bartender who worked gratis? Harrison Ginsberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. When a Providence restaurant called The Dorrance opened with an ambitious cocktail program, he labored there free for six months to learn his craft. It paid off. Today, at 27, after a stint at The Dawson in Chicago (where Aaron Pollack is now—see page 130), he tends bar at two downtown Manhattan spots, The Dead Rabbit and BlackTail. And he collects not just paychecks, but prizes in cocktail competitions—last fall Drinks International magazine named the Rabbit the world’s best bar.

Ginsberg started out to be a chef, but his detour to libations wasn’t so unlikely. After all, it’s the recent revolution in cuisine—insisting on fresh ingredients and doing things right even if it takes longer—that inspired a similar renaissance behind the bar. Today, he says, you’ll see surprising savory ingredients in cocktails—mushrooms, dill and miso, for example. “When I’m out I like to find a drink on the menu that doesn’t sound like it’s up my alley at all, and order that,” he says. But when Ginsberg and his girlfriend entertain in their home in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood, his mainstay is a batch of gin martinis made with a liter of a London dry gin such as Tanqueray, 500 milliliters of vermouth and 10 ounces of water, stirred and stored in bottles in the freezer. “The texture changes slightly in the freezer,” he says, “so that the gin has a rich, creamy, velvety feel.”

SOUTH Curtis Carrillo Sweet Liberty, Miami Beach Truly “elevated” cocktail craftsmanship is practiced in perhaps eight or 10 markets around the country by 30 or 40 with-it mixology mavens, says Curtis Carrillo, 31, of Miami Beach’s Sweet Liberty. “We all kind of travel in the same circles, you know?” he says. “It’s a lot smaller world than people think.” Young bartenders today draw inspiration, he explains, from pioneers who helped revive the classic pre-Prohibition cocktail art, including three who won fame in New York starting in the late 1980s and early ’90s: Dale DeGroff at the Rainbow Room, the late Sasha Petraske at Milk & Honey

and Jim Meacham at Please Don’t Tell. Carrillo grew up in southern California, tending bar through college, and worked in Las Vegas before landing in South Florida. He says his style was influenced by the “high-volume” places he’s been employed, but bartending has always required more than putting drinks—even creative ones—on the bar. “People think bartenders just listen,” he says. “But a really good bartender gives you back something better than you give him or her.” Seems something’s going right. Sweet Liberty was chosen last year as the Best New American Cocktail Bar in the Spirited Awards at the 15-year-old annual New Orleans cocktail festival “Tales of the Cocktail.” “The cocktail scene here is still being defined,” says Carrillo. “I like that about Miami Beach. We take things a little less seriously here.”

WEST Yael Vengroff The Spare Room, Los Angeles Can you have exacting standards and still be fun? You can if you’re Yael Vengroff, beverage director at The Spare Room, which combines a bar with bowling and gaming in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. “Everyone’s very supportive in L.A., which is great,” says the 30-year-old. “But we also need to be critical and have the guts to say, ‘We can do better.’” Part of it is simply that broad-based cocktail culture is relatively new here— even though the Roosevelt itself opened six days before Lindbergh’s flight in 1927 and for two years was Marilyn Monroe’s home. “In terms of technique,” says Vengroff,

“L.A. still has a lot of growing to do.” Yet she estimates that 70 percent of her customers are cocktail connoisseurs who value her insistence on using fresh juices and homemade syrups. And this perfectionist is anything but uptight. “I’m a ‘have fun at the bar’ type,” she says. “I try to be as unprecious as possible. It’s about the guest having a good time.” The Houston native attended NYU and started as a cocktail waitress in an East Village sports bar. She first tended bar at 19 at the Tailor under Eben Freeman. After moving to L.A., she was named “Fastest Hands in the West” in 2014 and took over the beverage program at The Spare Room the next year, helping it snag Time Out Los Angeles’ 2016 “Bar of the Year” honors. “Be adventurous,” she advises. “Branch out from that one brand you’re always drinking. You may open yourself to a whole new world of flavor.”

The bubbly reserved for special occasions is having a festive, toast-worthy time of its own. By Josh Sens

I

| GARMANY

n the fall of 2014, music mogul Jay-Z put his ample money where his mouth was when he purchased Armand de Brignac, the storied company behind his favorite bubbly. For pop culture watchers, the acquisition was a shimmering sign of champagne’s street cred. But for serious wine lovers, what gives the fizzy stuff its contemporary cool isn’t rappers and hip-hop stars rhyming about their cork-popping celebrations. Nor is it even the grand producers—“grandes marques”—that have long dominated the global champagne market. The big news is being made at the margins of the fabled Champagne region in northeast France, where a younger generation of winemakers has been putting a new stamp on the effervescent wine. Pardon our French, but champagne is in the midst of a renaissance. “It’s always been thought of as a wine for special occasions, and of course that’s still true,” says Paul Einbund, a respected sommelier who owns The Morris restaurant in San Francisco, which boasts one of the city’s most comprehensive bubbly collections. “But you now also have a growing number of producers who are using different grape varietals and playing around with styles within the tradition. As a result, you’re getting a lot of very interesting options, some of them quite affordable. It’s really an exciting time in champagne.” To appreciate the hubbub in champagne’s present, it helps to know a bit

about its past. As once dictated by tradition and now mandated by law, sparkling wine can only be called champagne if the grapes are grown, bottled and fermented within the region (about 100 miles east of Paris) of the same name. Though seven kinds of grapes are approved for use in champagne, three varietals have long played a dominant role: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Since World War II, the majority of champagne consumed around the world has been produced by the grand champagne houses, big names like Krug, Moët & Chandon and Dom Perignon. But in recent years that landscape has been shifting, its profile altered by a bumper crop of grower-producers who have set aside fruit to make distinctive champagne of their own. Among them is Charles Dufour, a scruffy-faced vintner who farms six certified-organic hectares in an off-the-beaten-path corner of the Champagne region. Dufour’s vineyards are composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two of the Big Three varietals in the region. But he also cultivates old-vine Pinot Blanc, which his grandfather planted in the 1950s. Pinot Blanc is a rare find in Champagne. But like Chardonnay, it is capable of a great subtlety and balance, as evidenced by its influence in Dufour’s Le Champ du Clos Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs, a champagne made with white grapes only. Dufour produces this blanc de blancs through natural methods—no filtering, no added sugar, only wild yeast—the better to showcase the

wine’s inherently complex traits. “I try to avoid things my father and other vintners used to add to their wines, like sugars and dried yeasts and enzymes to clarify juices,” Dufour says. “I do this not only for fun, but also so I can better understand what is really happening with the wines without intervention.” Dufour is not alone in his less-is-more approach. Or in his reliance on unheralded varietals. He has a kindred spirit in Michel Laherte, the fifth-generation vintner who runs Laherte Frères. As part of his explorations in Champagne, Laherte has recreated one of the family’s long-lost plots, planting a mix of fruit that sprang from the soil centuries ago. One of the releases, Lahore Frères Les 7 Extra Brut, is a lively bubbly that lives up to its name: It’s a blend of all seven champagne grapes. Another attention-grabbing bottle on the market comes from the venerable champagne house Tarlant, whose roots reach back to 1687. In the centuries since, three grape varietals—Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Meslier—have grown vanishingly scarce in champagne. But siblings Benoit and Melanie Tarlant have put them to good use in Tarlant BAM! Brut Nature, an uncommonly delicious bubbly. For years, the three grapes in Tarlant BAM! had been nearly forgotten in champagne. They now serve as a reminder of what’s changing in a region where it seems everything old is new again.

TASTING NOTES NV Charles Dufour Le Champ du Clos Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs ($70) Delicate notes of stone fruit give way to hints of toasted almonds, with a refreshing minerality to the finish. NV Lahore Frères Les 7 Extra Brut ($94) A beautifully subtle bubbly with a clean, dry finish, brightened by hints of lemon and grapefruit along the way. NV Tarlant BAM! Brut Nature ($175) Just-so oak-aging gives this balanced champagne a nice round body, its butteriness complemented by hints of tart plum.

Clockwise from top: Jean-Mary and his son Benoit work together in their family’s vineyard, Tarlant; Tarlant’s vines are suspended between maritime and continental climates; as its name suggests, Lahore Frères Les 7 Extra Brut blends all seven champagne grapes; Dufour’s blanc de blanc is made with white grapes only; champagne is still the perfect pour when celebrating, but these days, you don’t need a special occasion to drink bubbly; Tarlant’s BAM! Brut Nature is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Meslier, hence the name BAM! and, says the family, it also stands for Benoit and Melanie.

royalty reborn

After a $100 million restoration, Bermuda’s Hamilton Princess is looking— and feeling—more splendidly regal than ever. By Rita Guarna

| GARMANY

I

sn’t it every girl’s dream to be a princess? It was almost as nice, I can report, to spend a few days living like one—at the Hamilton Princess on the beautiful island of Bermuda. I’d stayed at Bermuda’s other “Princess”—the Fairmont Southampton, formerly the Southampton Princess—decades ago and vowed to check out her sister urban luxury resort someday. What better time than right after a comprehensive restoration? The Hamilton Princess sits on the outskirts of Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital and financial center, and first welcomed guests in 1885, two years after a real-life princess, Louise, a daughter of Queen Victoria, was enchanted by the island. It was Louise who inspired the five-star resort’s name. No doubt she’d be equally pleased with its recent $100 million facelift. Only the best for royalty! The Pink Palace, as the hotel has been called, does not disappoint. While I was still awed by its classic exterior, there, suddenly, was a contemporary lobby with jaw-dropping, museum-quality pieces by noted artists. Lots of hotels have fine art, but this one makes you feel as if you’ve walked into a world-class gallery. Any old dame is sure to feel like young royalty feasting on cuisine by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson or taking a curated art tour, ogling the more than 60-piece collection by the likes of Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Tom Wesselmann, or lying semi-submerged on beach hammocks suspended over vibrant blue waters, or unwinding at a new Exhale-branded spa, a sprawling—8,200-squarefoot—yet serene spa and fitness center overlooking the harbor. Less than two hours from the U.S. East Coast, Bermuda is part of a 21-square mile, 180-island archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic. It’s perfect for those craving prim-and-proper British civility (think afternoon tea and cricket matches) amid gorgeous beaches and friendly people clad, of course, in the shorts that share the island’s name. It’s no wonder the resort is popular among both vacationers and businesspeople: It’s amazingly well-

run; soon after arriving I felt that here all my needs would be met. Rooms and suites come with harbor, garden, pool or city views. Ours overlooked the harbor, and I must admit that sipping a cocktail on the balcony above the 60-berth marina and watching the comings and goings of superyachts can be hypnotic. Bathrooms are modern marble marvels with a lovely line of Le Labo Rose 31 toiletries. When it’s time to dine, the Hamilton Princess offers choices that put to shame the cookie-cutter eateries at many resorts. The 1609 Bar and Restaurant, named for the year the first colony was established here, is the only one at the new marina and offers fresh-from-the-boat seafood, salads, sandwiches and burgers. We loved the charred octopus, crispy conch fritters and fish tacos for lunch. For breakfast, the Crown & Anchor boasts a huge buffet (a la carte choices too), and you can dine alfresco. The hotel’s crowning culinary glory is Marcus’, Chef Samuelsson’s ode to island fare. The “Ol’ Man’s Shrimp & Grits” was lick-your-plate good; the “Steak Frites” a carnivore’s delight. We ate there twice, and both times were wonderful: fresh, delicious food (think multilayered flavors), great service and perfect people-watching. While you can easily lounge around the hotel and feel completely content, a playground beckons. For one thing, Bermuda is a golf lovers’ dream, with more courses per capita than anywhere else in the world. One award-winning course, Robert Trent Jones’ Port Royal, has stunning views of the ocean. In fact, the 16th hole requires a 235-yard shot over the Atlantic. As one would expect, Bermuda is one of the best places to sail (no wonder the island played host to the 35th staging of America’s Cup this summer, beating out respected sailing venues like Newport and San Diego). You don’t need to be a professional contender to enjoy the sport: The island’s Great Sound, with warm water and perfect wind—usually around 10–15 miles per hour—makes it ideal for an afternoon of zipping along the sea. Lazier types will delight in one of the pink-

tinged sand beaches (the hue comes from crushed coral from the nearby reef) that line the 75 miles of coastline. Most of the action is at sea level, of course, but if you want to see everything, head underground too. The Crystal & Fantasy Caves in Hamilton have beautiful natural rock formations that are reflected in the caves’ 55-foot-deep pool, giving it an otherworldly feel. History buffs will rejoice in the maritime heritage of this British naval stronghold. Some 91 old forts dot the island and many are open to the public. The Royal Naval Dockyard (it’s been there since the 17th century) is interesting but a tad touristy, as it’s close to the cruise ship port. Check out Fort Hamilton in Pembroke Parish for a less crowded look at old military might. Another fine choice, Fort St. Catherine, is located in St. George, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was founded in 1612. You’ll be exploring on foot, as no car rentals are allowed. If you must have wheels, rent a scooter (remember to “drive” on the left). Or, better yet, buckle up in one of the Hamilton Princess’s two-seat Renault Twizy electric vehicles. The narrow, four-wheel Twizy, a compound of “twin” and “easy,” was designed by Renault’s Formula One racing team and can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge. We found it perfect for touring St. George and drove it to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, one of the oldest cast-iron lighthouses in the world. All that exploring is sure to make you hungry again. Why not try the fish chowder, which is about as close to a national dish as you’ll find? It’s a Manhattan-chowderesque number prepared with tomatoes and onion and seasoned with black rum. Should you get thirsty, every bar proudly serves the Dark ’n Stormy, the island’s signature cocktail. Made with dark rum and ginger beer, the tipple is trademarked by Gosling’s Rum, the oldest and largest export business on the island. It’s a refreshing concoction that in no way resembles the cloyingly sweet rum punches we’ve all tried on other islands. Raise your glass to offer a royal toast—not so much to this delightful visit, but perhaps, to your next.

GROOMING

6WAYS

TO LOOK LASER SHARP These cutting-edge procedures can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, banish unwanted hair, remove that embarrassing tattoo and more.

THE ISSUE: SUN SPOTS Sure, you rocked that glorious tan back in the day, but now that we’re all grown up, we know sunbathing often results in one thing: dark spots. Fortunately, Photorejuvenation, which uses intense pulsed light (IPL) technology, can banish such skin transgressions by targeting melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and sun spots). When the IPL hits the offending area, the melanin is absorbed by the body, making it less visible. You’ll need about three to five treatments, spaced a month apart. The pros of the procedure: IPL can be performed anywhere on the body, and the results are long-lasting. The cons: Crusting may occur and last up to 10 days, and you’ll have to stay out of the sun after each treatment—but c’mon, you should have been doing that all along!

GAR.fw17.grooming.indd 144

THE ISSUE: THAT REGRETFUL TATTOO When Johnny Depp was madly in love with Winona Ryder (remember 1989?), he had the phrase “Winona Forever” inked on his right arm—but when the relationship went south, he had a tattoo artist change the inscription to “Wino Forever.” That was certainly a creative way to fix the problem, but the Pirates of the Carribean star could have opted for laser tattoo removal. The PicoSure laser, for one, breaks up pigment colors with a high-intensity beam; black absorbs the wavelengths best, meaning it’s the easiest color to remedy. You’ll need more than one treatment, and the number of sessions will depend on the age, size and color of your ink, but seriously— anything’s better than being a wino forever.

THE ISSUE: EXCESSIVE HAIR Ask your girlfriend: Furry backs aren’t hot. And unfortunately, laser hair removal has been tedious and time-consuming— until now. The LightSheer Duet laser features an extra-large treatment tip, meaning expansive areas like the back, chest and shoulders can be smoother in a jiffy. Some men are even opting for LightSheer to clean up necklines their and reduce pesky five o’clock shadow. The best part? Patients typically need between three and four sessions—half of what was required with older methods—and many men fit in an appointment during their lunch break.

THE ISSUE: ACNE SCARS The bad news: Acne scars can never be completely removed. The good news: Fractional lasers, like the MiXto SX Micro Fractional CO2 Laser, can significantly reduce their appearance. What’s so special about the MiXto? Energy is delivered in a scanning pattern rather than a continuous beam, which means there’ll be less unnecessary heat build-up in the skin and higher energy levels can be applied. The skin’s top layer will then vaporize and peel off, providing visible improvement in terms of skin quality; the laser also stimulates collagen growth, which will give your face a smoother appearance. Some patients need just one treatment; those with deeper acne scars may require two or three.

THE ISSUE: BROKEN CAPILLARIES It doesn’t matter how you got those reddish-purple lines on your nose and face, be it from wind- or sunburn, trauma or even rosacea. The bottom line is they’re a bummer. To the rescue: pulsed dye laser treatment. The Vbeam laser, for one, is known for being almost painless and the least likely of any treatment to leave a residual mark or scar. It’s also considered safe to be used around the eye, although caution is advised. Depending on how many broken blood vessels you have, you may need just one treatment, but it takes four to six weeks to see final results.

THE ISSUE: FINE LINES AND WRINKLES Fraxel, a fractional laser treatment, is being heralded for its ability to reduce wrinkles plus fine lines around the eyes and even on the eyelids. But that’s not all: It can diminish acne and surgical scarring, age spots, sun damage, enlarged pores and even stretch marks. Fraxel can be performed in two ways: ablative (meaning the top layer of skin is removed in a more invasive procedure) or non-ablative (lasers heat up the underlying skin tissue without marring the surface). The former requires a recovery time of a few days to a few weeks, while patients who choose the latter are typically good to go in just one to three days. A series of three to five treatments are usually performed, depending on the patient’s needs.
