I had my husband’s 60th birthday party here. Their wine room is beautiful, the food is delicious and the service is second to none. The wait staff was very attentive to not only the birthday boy but to everyone else. Corey, our event planner was so easy to work with and did not oversell us on anything. We had the perfect amount of food (butler service and appetizer trays) and everyone loved the menu that we set. I can say enough good things about Charlie’s of Lincroft. Already thinking about what else we can celebrate there.

We recently had the most INCREDIBLE experience at Charlie’s of Lincroft. From the moment we arrived to check out the location until the moment we left, everything was absolutely amazing. We decided to have our wedding in the wine room, and it turned out to be the perfect choice for our intimate ceremony. The room felt so cozy and romantic, creating a beautiful atmosphere for our special day.

The service provided by the waiters and bartender was top-notch. They were incredibly helpful and sweet throughout the entire night, ensuring that our guests were well taken care of. We had our own floor in the restaurant, separate from other guests, which made it feel like our own private venue. With about 20 people attending, there was plenty of room for everyone to move around, hang out by the bar, and simply enjoy the evening.

Overall, our experience at Charlie’s of Lincroft was beyond our expectations. We are already looking forward to hosting more events at this fantastic venue in the future. If you’re searching for a place that offers excellent service, a cozy and intimate atmosphere, and a team that goes the extra mile, Charlie’s of Lincroft is definitely the place to go. It’s worth every single penny.

What brands or specific pieces are you most excited for this season?

We’re all thrilled for the reintroduction of Zegna this fall. We have their entire collection, which has a youthful feel, including shoes and sneakers. In such a short time, we’ve become one of the largest vendors for Zegna’s popular Triple Stitch sneaker.

What are the “in” colors for fall? Jackets and sportcoats in burgundy, raisin and green will be hits for all guys this fall.

Which trends from previous seasons should men continue to invest in?

Pleated pants, which came on in the last couple of seasons, are here to stay. These aren’t the traditional pleats of yesteryear. Today’s pleated pants are modern, cropped and look great sneakers. This fall, we great styles from Brunello Cucinelli and PT.

Why are overshirts becoming a must-have a man’s wardrobe? They’re smart, casual replacements to sportcoats. When you’re in a situation where a sportcoat or is too much or too dressy, an overshirt can

be the perfect solution. Check out our selection from Maurizio Baldassari, Cucinelli, NN07 and Zegna.

Is there room for both casual overshirts and tailored sportcoats? Sportcoats have become a reflection of one’s personality and are almost like an accessory. They’re becoming more available in non-traditional fabrics and colors, and the more unique the better. These days, it’s become common to tell someone, “Awesome jacket!” Of course, you can still wear them in a traditional sense with a button-up and trousers, but it’s also a great look to pair them with jeans and sneakers.

Are sneakers the preferred footwear these days?

Leather and dress sneakers are still a hit for men, and we’re offering modern styles at all price points. Zegna’s Triple Stitch is big seller, and Santoni and

Corduroys in different colors will be big.

What’s new in outerwear?

Maurizio Baldassari has a vest that’s stylish and sophisticated for just about any look. Moorer too is very unique, and their jackets and coats have all the quintessential Italian qualities. Gimo’s always has good outerwear, and the cashmere trucker jacket by Cucinelli is incredible.

Seeing that a guy has the right suit, shirt, shoes and outerwear covered, what do you recommend to finish the outfit?

Kiton scarves are 100 percent silk and feel like cashmere, and the patterns are amazing. Also, your feet will thank you if you wear cashmere socks by Marcoliani.

Autumn REFRESHER

WIDE Appeal

While the wide-leg trouser has received a lot of love this year, let’s take a moment for wide-leg leather. Whether you prefer authentic hide or vegan material, leather trousers will prove to be the most versatile piece in your fall wardrobe. Wear them with a blouse and jacket to the office or a metallic top for evening.

Here’s how to choose the perfect pair:

Step one, choose your hue. Available in a variety of colors, wide-leg leather can easily mix and match with your other fall staples. Step two, pick a cut. Straight legs, street-wear-inspired joggers and fun flairs can all take you from day to night when paired with a tweed blazer, ruffled blouse or flattering button-front.

Leather isn’t the only wide-leg style you should have in your fashion arsenal. It’s clear that wide-leg denim is here to stay (well, at least until next season). But the fresh cuts for 2023 make for irresistible investments. For example, everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Zoë Kravitz has been spotted sporting puddle pants, and the trend gets a denim interpretation this season. Puddle jeans are straight leg denim long enough to “puddle” around your ankles. While you might’ve shortened these in past, for 2023, let the fabric

We know, we know! Tailored is the trend for 2023. But this season, menswear styles are sultrier than ever. While wider, more generous cuts are in vogue for most wardrobe items this year, the fall trends include cinching blazers and longline coats at the waist with bold, oversized belts. For a different approach to adding sensuality to suiting, just look to Jonathan Simkhai’s cropped blazers and mini skirts that show a just little skin in the perfect places. There’s more to the tailored trend than jackets and pants…viva la vest! We’re loving the vest as the star of the outfit. Keep your button front in the closet and show some sass with a vest paired with wide leg trousers. If your personal style is a little too rock ‘n’ roll for a traditional vest, Marissa Webb’s black leather vest dress is so cool it’s hot. While we’re on the subject of Marissa Webb’s fall line, we’re obsessed with the unexpected corset details the designer placed on blazers and pants that give wide

BERRY Chic

With all the greige and neutral monochromatic fashions this season, we’re hungry for bright bold pops of color. That’s why we’re berry happy to see so many designers incorporating elements of magenta, wine red and violet rose. These romantic and exciting hues awaken the sophisticated menswear styles and are eye-catching alternatives basic black cocktail attire.

These coats dominated as the spring outerwear of choice for fashionistas and celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Selena Gomez alike. Now cut from warmer fabrics, like wool, cashmere, shearling and leather, longline coats keep you warm. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy can’t capture pawns as well as the wunderkind she once played. But she captures our attention like a champion.

Quick: Where have you seen those big, brown, spaced-out eyes? Actress Anya Taylor-Joy, 27, is best known—so far—for playing chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit, which begins in 1950s Kentucky.

She had a multicultural childhood: born in Miami to a banker named Taylor and a psychologist named Joy, this rising star spent her earliest years in Buenos Aires and moved to London at age 6. (That may help explain why you can’t quite place her accent.) As a child she was so angry about being uprooted that at first she refused to speak English. “I wanted to go home, and in my 6-, 7-year-old mentality I thought my parents would have to take me back if I didn’t speak the language,” she said in a 2020 interview with the British website NME. But the move turned out for the best, because at age 17 the trained ballerina was signed to a modeling contract after being scouted while walking her dog outside Harrods. Later, on a photo shoot, she met an actor from Downton Abbey, who referred her to his agent.

Soon thereafter the young thespian was getting cast fast and furiously: in 2015’s The Witch, 2016’s Split, in 2020’s Emma (based on

the Jane Austen novel), and in a few episodes of the British series Peaky Blinders in between. In 2020 came Gambit, the streaming service’s “biggest scripted limited series to date,” in which as Harmon she skewers the condescension of self-infatuated young male geniuses as easily as other girls flip their hair. (But she struggles with addiction and mental health issues too, as we’re skillfully shown.) For that role, Taylor-Joy won Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe awards.

A reported 62 million households streamed The Queen’s Gambit—could that be what launched the actress into the stratosphere of fashion? Roughly a year after the show’s debut—the same year Taylor-Joy was included on Time magazine’s 100 Next list—she was named as Dior’s Global Brand Ambassador, representing both its fashion and beauty lines. What becomes A LEGEND MOST?

Give yourself a surname like Legend, and it’s like donning a diamond-studded tux: You risk being a joke if you can’t pull it off, but John Legend wears it well. The stage moniker John Roger Stephens chose for himself after landing his first record deal embodies his persona to a T. It’s a worthy sobriquet for a worthy musical multitalent—and a suave style icon.

The 44-year-old grew up as the oldest of four siblings in Springfield, Ohio, a musical prodigy of sorts. He learned to play the piano at four years old, and performed in his church’s choir at seven. “I’ve been wearing suits since my dad first made one for me when I was kid going to church,” he told Gear Patrol in 2022. “Both of my parents are tailors, and suits have always been very natural for me.”

Did these humble but sartorially sophisticated beginnings foreshadow the star’s later style prowess? Apparently. Since his big musical break circa 2004—the year he was signed to Kanye West’s record label, GOOD Music—Legend has become notorious for stylish suiting, putting his own impeccable twist on traditional menswear. This multitalented star’s success is a surprise to few who knew him early on—who knew, for instance, that he was as gifted academically as musically. He skipped two grades in school and started high school when he was only 12, and he graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. Besides being a male fashion icon, a musician (with eight studio albums), a TV star (a coach on The Voice) and a record and film producer (an executive producer, for example, on the Oscar-winning La La Land), the “Ordinary People” crooner completed the “EGOT” circuit (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner at only 39, the first African-American man to snag that honor. Last year, he became a designer too, collaborating with shoe brand Sperry on a line of boat shoes and lace-up boots.

Just as one needs handsome pairs of cap-toe oxfords, monk straps and pair of kicks that exudes a casual-yet-dressed-up vibe belongs in the shoe rotation. fashion sneaker, this special type of shoe has been making waves in recent years. Aston Martin’s MARVEL

The British automaker embraces change with the new Vanquish, its first mid-engine hypercar.

You can’t simply rest on your laurels when you’re a famous luxury-car brand, surely not the reputed favorite (one wants to spell it “favourite”) of fictional spy-hero James Bond. Long renowned for manufacturing sports cars with front engines, the British manufacturer Aston Martin plans to introduce in early 2024 its third-generation Vanquish—the company’s first-ever mid-

engine car. It’s been several years in the making: Engineers introduced the world to the Vanquish Vision as a concept car in 2019, two years after the company ceased production on the second-gen Vanquish. Fast-forward to this year, when finishing touches were completed and the vision accelerated toward reality.

One thing that’s clear already about the new Vanquish is its status as a hypercar, Aston Martin’s latest entry in that elite category (joining the limited-edition Valkyrie and the DBS). It’s elevated to the top 1 percent of performance cars thanks to a new hybrid V8 powertrain, featuring a twin-turbo Mercedes AMG engine and two electric motors. The equipment under the rear-mounted hood is said to generate 700 horsepower and a top speed north of 200 miles per hour—easily on par with the best from McLaren and Ferrari.

And designers didn’t forget about Aston Martin’s bread and butter: luxury amenities. An intuitive infotainment setup

includes a high-powered audio system, navigation and an 8-inch touchscreen that resembles one used in the brand’s former Vantage models. Engineers ditched the undersized rear seats, which critics deemed almost unusable in previous generations, and gave more legroom to the driver and passenger.

As good as it looks from the inside, the new Vanquish is just as sexy from the outside. The narrow, concave front end, high-positioned headlamps and curvaceous rear can easily take an onlooker’s breath away, while the carbon-fiberdominated body assures the vehicle lightweight mobility. Together, the aerodynamic profile and an approximate 3,300-pound weigh-in move it to the front of the hypercar class.

The Vanquish likely won’t supplant the DBS Superleggera as the marque’s flagship, nor will it be Bond’s next gadgetequipped getaway car. (Did 007 really die?) What’s certain, however, is that this latest iteration of the Aston Martin icon— expected to hover in the $300K-to-$400K range—will attract thrill seekers and enthusiasts alike.

After all, it’s only right that a historic name keeps on making history.

Aegean SWEET SPOT

Within eyeshot of Mykonos’ glittering nightclubs and a short ferry ride north of Santorini’s famed cliffside villages lies the island of Paros. Known through the centuries for its exquisite white marble—the Venus de Milo is one of many masterpieces sculpted from Parian marble—Paros now beckons travelers with promises of varied and beautiful beaches, luxury boutiques in winding streets and sumptuous meals along the harbor. While Paros has certainly hit the map, it rests in a sort of destination “sweet spot”—full of the vibrancy and picturesque beauty of its more popular neighbors, but without (at least for now) their crowds.

Paros is one of the roughly 220 islands in the Cyclades island group, and it’s hard to overstate the depth and diversity of this island gem. There are two main villages around its primary ports: Parikia, the island’s capital, where inter-island ferries dock almost by the hour, and Naoussa, a village along the old harbor that is laid-back yet chic, the dock lined with fishing boats and the ruins of a Venetian fort once intended to defend the town from pirates. Inland, smaller villages dot the hills, and the coastline is peppered with myriad beaches. There’s even the small scenic island of Antiparos lying mere minutes away, ideal for a day trip. To wander around Paros is to explore an embodiment of the elusive “good life.” It feels idyllic, and somehow familiar. All this, and at only 64 square miles—roughly the size

of Brooklyn—a half hour’s ride by car or moped will traverse the island from top to bottom. While Paros is certainly a rich enough destination for a week or more, even a short trip allowed us a brief, teasing taste of all the island has to offer.

Upon docking in Parikia, we encountered a buzzing port that quickly settled into a quiet waterfront as luggage-laden travelers departed in taxis and rental cars. A minute’s walk from the water leads into a maze of white-washed stone buildings with trees winding up to Venetian balconies. As throughout Greece, centuries of history are layered around you—a few hundred meters from the port is the fourth-century Byzantine church Panagia Ekatontapiliani, literally “Church of The Hundred Doors,” only steps away from a small archaeological museum with artifacts dating to thousands of years B.C.E.

Over a few hours in Lefkes, one of Paros’ most beautiful mountain villages, we walked almost reverently through quiet streets, taking in the brilliant colors of bougainvillea bursting across white stone houses against a blue sky, interrupted only by tavernas, ceramics workshops and blue domed churches. For lunch, we found our respite from the midday sun in the shady courtyard of Lefkiano Restaurant, cooling down with a crisp glass of Assyrtiko before indulging in the house specialty of tender, slow-cooked lamb.

Checking yet another box on the summer checklist, the island is blessed with a wide variety of beaches, fit for every occasion, from large, golden expanses to hidden inlets, offering vibrant beach bars or renowned windsurfing as well as family-friendly escapes or quiet retreats largely untouched through even the height of the summer season. For our own beach adventure, we caught a water taxi out of Naoussa harbor for possibly Paros’ best-known beach, Kolymbithres, consisting of three small, sandy inlets nestled between other-worldly granite formations. The largest of the sandy spaces offered shaded chairs and beachside service, but, with only a few hours of sun left, we stretched our blanket out on the rounded rock formations, joining a varied

group of tourists and locals tanning, reading and lazily swimming through pure blue water.

Back in Naoussa, we saw the harbor come to life; it was milling with people finding their spot to watch the famous Cycladic sunset. Just off from the main row at the waterfront, the harbor dips in, leaving an open square filled with the tables of four or five restaurants, each serving the day’s fresh catch against a backdrop of pink-streaked skies and gently bobbing boats.

As the sun goes down, Naoussa’s evening kicks off in earnest, and the village is abuzz with couples, groups of friends and young families wandering through luxe boutiques, eating gelato in streets strung with fairy lights, sitting down for dinner at more conventional Greek dining hours and exploring rooftop cocktail bars.

The food and wine of Greece deserve pages to themselves, and my only frustration was that I couldn’t muster the stomach space for four or five meals a day. The freshness and quality of ingredients make the simplest meals shine—vibrant Greek salads topped with a sheet of feta, whole fish fresh from the sea and tender grilled lamb chops, washed down with crisp white wines.

As Paros’s star continues to rise, so does the number of beautiful hotels, clustered mostly around Naoussa as well as the island’s southern beaches. One standout is near the western coast: the Yria Island Boutique Hotel & Spa on Parasporos Bay, with 60 rooms and suites, bougainvillea-filled gardens, a spa, a fitness center and experts to guide you in tennis, yoga and Pilates. There you can dine in relaxed splendor at Nefeli Restaurant, helmed by Michelin-star chef Lefteris Lazarou, which features food from the hotel’s own gardens and seafood from local fishermen.

For a day or a week, on a romantic getaway or a holiday with friends, as an introduction to the wonders of the Greek islands or a return to explore further this jewel of the Aegean, Paros lies waiting to sweep you off your feet.

Painter Alexandra Suvorova

exuberantly taps other media, other eras—and another name.

“Every child is an artist,” said the famous artist Pablo Picasso. “The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

For Russian-born Alexandra Suvorova, 37, that sentiment has been an inspiration. She first explored art at age 5, when her parents signed her up for art school. Since then she’s become an acclaimed visual artist, exploring various media, working on cardboard and canvas, with acrylics and oil paints. But the common thread in all of Suvorova’s pieces is that each reflects her diverse background, not just as a painter, but as a stage and costume designer as well. The paintings feature animals, humans, nature and body parts—a brain wrapped in a floral bouquet, for example.

Suvorova goes by her alter ego, Baroque Anarchist, because her art strikes parallels between the present day (graffiti, for example) and Baroque era (layers of exuberant detail). Besides her paintings commissioned for private collections, Suvorova’s work has appeared in art shows around the world, as well as in museums such as the Moscow Museum of Decorative Art. Russian-born artist Alexandra Suvorova made this bold oil on canvas in 2021 and titled it “Medusa.” “I hope that people can feel something special for themselves in my art which makes them resonate with it,” she says.

“I do a compositional sketch for each work, or I do a small abstract collage just for the right compositional and tonal decision-formula,” the artist told Medium “Next stage is a drawing, then a grisaille in a brown-white tone. Only after that, if necessary, I apply layers of color.”

In our technology-driven world, you can do everything from your smartphone or computer— order your groceries, pay your bills, track your sleep. You can stream a 30-minute workout too. But what if you gave tech a rest?

In the new wellness trend called primal movement, people move their bodies in the way bodies have moved for aeons, without apps and wearables to measure calories burned and heart rate, and without equipment such as barbells and treadmills or bikes to help you break a sweat. Think of apes instead of apps— fundamental moves that all of us, from babies to our four-legged friends, do instinctively, and that our fellow primates have been doing for thousands of years.

This back-to-basics approach to fitness features seven key movements that are integrated into the workout, all of which we routinely use in daily life: push, pull, lunge, hinge (bend), squat, twist and walk. For example, you may bend to pick up your toddler, twist to check your mirror’s blind spot while driving and hinge to pick up the packages from your porch.

Practical chores aside, the physical benefits of primal movement are clear. This regimen targets your whole body, slowly but surely improving your coordination and range of motion, as well as your core strength. Some popular moves that define these workouts include body-weight

squats, forward or reverse lunges, planks and medicine-ball throws. More advanced techniques that are pivotal to primal movement are employed in quadrupedal movement training (QMT), in which you’re using both hands and both feet, essentially crawling on the ground like an infant or a monkey. Think bear crawls, the inchworm or the bird dog, coincidentally all named for animals. Walking, running and hiking all count as primal movements too, and fall under the “walk” category, No. 7 on the list.

Want to ease into primal? Tack 10 minutes of primal movements onto the end of your current workout. If you’d rather go full force into group fitness, book a class at a boutique studio— Primal Strength at Momentum Fitness in New York City is an example. Or you can order the support system from Primal 7, a portable set of TRX-style bands that’ll help you ease into these “primal 7” moves at home. A price of $179 gets you the full system, including access to more than 10 primal movement programs you can watch virtually.

As with any new fitness routine, the more practice you get, the more reps you’ll be able to do, and the stronger you’ll become.

Of course, there remains that nagging question, a question cavemen never faced. Is a thing really worth doing if you can do it without your phone?

The newest thing in exercise is also the oldest— the basic “primal” moves your ancestors made long before they were human.

Powder, PARDNER!

On my third visit to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, I was riding in a truck to the Hayden Airport driven by Todd Lodwick, one of this ski town’s most famous sons. Lodwick is a six-time Olympian in cross-country skiing who won a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. We had spent a couple of days skiing, and now we were in a blinding snowstorm, with Steamboat’s legendary champagne powder rapidly piling up around us.

“Looks like it’s three-wire winter,” he said, referring to the snow height on the barbed-wire cattle fences on either side of the road. This was cowboy talk in a ski town deeply rooted in its Western past.

Steamboat Springs is one of my favorite ski towns and one of the most distinctive ones in the country. It’s a real town with a wide main street and an authentic Western feel. Every January, there’s the annual Cowboy Downhill, when pro rodeo riders compete on skis in races down snowpacked Main Street, towed by horses in a sport called skijoring, which originated in Norway. You’ll never see this in Vail, Zermatt or Stowe.

This event is a thrill. But every day in Steamboat is a thrill for me, because I get to ski on champagne powder, which is light and fluffy. Credit Steamboat’s location—the northwest corner of Colorado is where the moisture-laden jet stream from the Pacific frequently encounters the Rockies first. It’s where moisture evaporates, and the snow’s water density is reduced by more than half. Or, to put it simply, on an intense powder day, Steamboat boasts what may be the best powder skiing in the world. It is the only snow in the world that’s been trademarked.

Steamboat offers about 3,000 acres of skiing spread across six peaks. There are 169 named runs and 3,668 feet of vertical drop. The mountain also offers fantastic views, some of the best in the

West—with vistas stretching 100 miles or more. What changed this year was the opening of the new Wild Blue Gondola this past winter. The 2023–24 season promises even more changes, a new lift providing access to 650 acres of expert terrain, making Steamboat second only to Vail for skiable acreage in Colorado.

Now Steamboat is famed for its wide-groomed boulevards, and my favorites include Vagabond, Buddy’s Run and Rainbow. I like glade skiing in Twilight, Morningside Park and Pioneer Ridge. On your first day, I find that a good bet is to ski off the Sunshine Express lift, where you can pick and choose from gentle runs to bona fide blues, blues that are almost blacks, and blacks that will immediately test your mettle and ability. You can also dip into the glades. There are various on-mountain dining choices, but I especially love the Paramount, which has some of the best and freshest homemade sandwiches and other fare.

On the mountain you may even spot Billy Kidd, an alpine ski racer who was one of two men to win America’s first medals in slalom at the Innsbruck Winter Olympics in 1964. It was silver, and Kidd went on to win three other Olympic medals, including a gold. He remains the ski mountain’s official ambassador and will stop and chat with just about everyone.

Steamboat is an Alterra resort, meaning that it’s part of the Ikon Pass program. Insiders know that getting up at dawn and paying an extra $55 above the cost of the lift ticket or pass for the First Tracks program is worth doing at least once during your stay. It buys you 45 minutes of prime skiing on fresh powder before the crowds are allowed on at 8:30 a.m.

berry Park Hot Springs, a few miles from town, or downtown Old Town Hot Springs.

If it’s another type of liquid you’re in search of, head to the TBar, an old-fashioned après ski bar in a former ski patrol building off the Right-o-Way run near the base. Mountain Peak Brewery is also a fine choice in town. Beyond the slopes, my favorite dinner choices include Mazzola’s Italian Restaurant for Italian comfort food, Aurum for its creative fare and views and Bésame for fine dining.

Steamboat is not Vail, Aspen, Deer Valley or any other fancier ski resort you might think of. It’s upscale but not luxe because the cowboy ethos keeps it grounded. Main Street is lined not with luxury boutiques but with outdoor gear shops, art galleries and stores with an indie feel.

As for lodging, the resort focuses on condominium accommodations like the upscale Trappeur’s Crossing Resort by Simply Steamboat and The Porches. Hotel properties include the Steamboat Grand, which has long been the classic big hotel in town. When I first visited Steamboat in the 1990s, I encountered the fledgling Moving Mountains. This enterprising English company had established staffed and catered chalets following the alpine model found in France and Switzerland. It now has several dozen of these elegant condo chalets throughout the town.

When to go? Watch the weather reports for the big powder dumps, if you can, and head to “The ’Boat” accordingly. But one of the best and busiest times to be there is during Winter Carnival, held in February, which offers up Nordic jumping, ski races and the Night Extravaganza, an incredible mix of ski prowess and lighting expertise on the slopes. You can be assured that the event is flavored with authentic cowboy culture, which makes Steamboat a unique resort in a ski world that is becoming ever more homogenized.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado, isn’t as chic as Vail or Aspen, but it’s unbeatable for the quality of its snow and the authenticity of its Western vibe.

Catch A CAB

Two words: cult wine. For a lot of people, the term conjures thoughts of cabernet sauvignon from the Napa Valley, and not the kind you find on supermarket shelves. Cult cabs fit a different profile. They exist in short supply. They command lofty prices and earn high marks from aficionados. Stash them somewhere dark and cool, and they grow in complexity and value over time.

That’s their reputation, and it’s not wrong. It is, however, incomplete, because cabs of this fine pedigree—scarce, celebrated, well suited for the cellar—are not confined to Napa. For evidence, look no farther than the county next door.

Roughly twice the size of its more famous neighbor, Sonoma County is a sprawling, diverse region, with offerings that range from robust zinfandel to prized pinot noir and chardonnay, sourced from vineyards along the fog-kissed coast. Further inland, on its steep hillsides, Sonoma also gives rise to cabs as cult-worthy as any sprung from Napa.

While serious collectors have long known about these wines, everyday consumers are just starting to catch on to them. Thanks to a small handful of respected producers, luxury Sonoma cabs—call them cult Sonoma cabs—are having a moment in the sun.

“Why is that happening now?” asks Brian Ball rhetorically. “I guess you could say that when something is truly great, it can only remain a secret for so long.”

Ball is the general manager of Skipstone Wine, a resplendent operation tucked into the folds of the Anderson Valley, a rumpled stretch of Sonoma County renowned for the quality of

its grapes. Skipstone’s roots reach back to 2001, when the Cyprus-born tech innovator Fahri Diner and his wife Constance acquired the property and began tapping into its world-class potential. At the time, the land had vineyards on the valley floor. But the Diners understood that greater intrigue lay in the hills, on the steeper, stingy slopes, where vines undergo a characterbuilding struggle. On that inspiring terrain, the Diners planted rows of cabernet sauvignon.

In 2005, Skipstone released its debut vintage. A year later, famed cab whisperer Phillippe Melka was brought on as a consulting winemaker. He remains in that role today, working under full-time winemaker Laura Jones, who came aboard in 2022.

In the years since it was launched, Skipstone has wowed critics and collectors alike with cabs of unparalleled complexity and depth, imbued with a brightness that complements their dark-berry ripeness.

“Something that jumps out to me about the best Sonoma cabernet sauvignon is that element of freshness,” Ball says. “It balances the richness that is inherent to the wines.”

Like the burlier cabs of Napa, Sonoma cabs speak to their terroir, and, as Ball sees it, there’s no point arguing which county does it better. “That’s a false dichotomy,” he says. Each style is expressive of its surroundings.

One distinction between the neighboring counties is that the wine industry in Napa had a jump-start on Sonoma’s, coming to global prominence in the 1970s and steadily gaining stature. Sonoma, Ball says, followed a similar path some 20 years later, which at least partly explains the

recent swell in recognition for Sonoma cabs.

A cluster of Skipstone’s Sonoma counterparts have helped build on that acclaim, including Vérité Winery, a leading cabernet maker, operating in the shadows of the Mayacamas mountains; and Aperture Cellars, where famed photographer Andy Katz has partnered with his son Jesse to coax powerfully elegant, single-vineyard cabs from fruit grown in volcanic soils.

All three wineries are situated in the Anderson Valley, within a newly proposed appellation called Pocket Peak, which distinguishes itself from the surrounding valley with its hillside vineyards.

“There’s no question that Napa set the gold standard for a lot of people in the wine industry,” Ball says. “They got started before us, and what they produce remains wonderful. But I’d put our wines in a glass against anyone.”

A saturated purple, this compelling wine matches its dark hue with a voluptuous structure and aromas of black cherry and licorice, which give way to dark berry on the palate. It is meant to be aged for 20 years or more.

A Bordeaux-style blend with 84 percent cabernet sauvignon, this beautifully balanced wine is both powerful and supple, with tannins brightened by fresh notes of black cherry.
