Coming from Wellington, Hannah says “there’s no point telling people in Richmond how to live without a bin in Wellington.” “We always arrive a few days early and we literally go into every shop and business
and talk to them, and go to the council and community organisations so we can tell people what’s available – it’s a really important part of it, and we get to learn new things too.” Attendee Richard Boyden
says, “some solutions weren’t for us, but there are things we’ll improve, probably to do with our use of plastics.“ However, seven-year-old Malachi Ayre, who sat in the front row with his notebook to write down any good ideas, gave them two stars. “At my school you get two stars, and my two stars are firstly, they really worked together, the two people running it, and my other star is that they didn’t just tell you things, but they showed you things and described them.” Malachi is excited to try out as many of the ideas as possible. “I thought it was really inspiring about what you should do,” he says. “My mum is going to get a bamboo toothbrush and we’ll make some of our own cleaners.” The Rubbish Trip continues throughout Nelson, Tahunanui, Murchison, Motueka and Takaka over the next two weeks.
