Annual Car Rally gets brains in gear (almost) The old adage “if all else fails, read the instructions” could easily have been applied to almost half the crews who took up the challenge of the annual Club Waimea Car Rally held recently. Adults, however, being adults showed a certain inability to follow straightforward simple instructions, or was it more a case of believing they could read the warped mind of the course plotter. By allowing local knowledge to override common sense, many crews soon found they were off the course that initially took them around in circles in Richmond before heading on a country-style tiki-tour through Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield, and Belgrove before heading back to Richmond. Off-course is probably an under-statement considering some of the mileages covered and reports of crews going round and round in ever-decreasing, and in some cases ever-increasing, circles. In an effort to keep one step ahead of crews, a couple of curve balls were
thrown in by the organiser this year in a effort to get them thinking outside the square, including a variation on the straight-ahead theme and the introduction of a series of cryptic clues. While this did have the desired effect to a certain degree, obeying instructions and carrying them out in the correct order, while the downfall of many, didn’t, much to the dismay of the organiser, faze the majority of the crews. Although fun was the name of the game, reports reaching rally headquarters, indicate that there were some rather ‘heated in-car discussions’ over the just on 94km 3 hour journey, however, while the major compliant seemed to be in regard to dehydration setting in (the course plotter deliberately by-passing any form of hostelry), the general consensus was that most thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, despite the pitfalls. It couldn’t have been too bad, no-one was yelling for a divorce lawyer, or threatening the organiser with any form of unpleasant retribution, at the end of the afternoon!!!

Above: Pam Campbell wininner our second TAB draw with Club Manager John Hewison. Right: Maximum draw winner Jessie Mills last Thursday night.
Club winners are grinners This month saw another lucky winner walk away with the maximum Members Draw prize, with Jessie Mills taking home a check for $1,500. She claimed one of the three draws that were running, with another still at the maximum amount, and another that this week will be worth $1,000. Come to the club on Thursdays between 5pm and 8pm armed with your Club Waimea Membership Card
and you too could be a winner! The TAB second chance draw was held again on June 3, with Pam Campbell losing her bet but winning the draw. The $1,000 prize was happily received by the punter, whose ticket stub number was drawn out of all the bets placed at the Club Waimea TAB on the day. Keep an eye out at the Club and on the website for when the next TAB draw will be held.
