Driver stable after crashing into truck: The man who crashed into a truck on February 6 is now in a stable condition, according to Nelson Marlborough Health Communications Officer Jane Horder. The crash happened at about 7.45 am Monday morning on State Highway 6 between Nelson and Rai Valley, when the man’s car ran into the back of the truck. The man had multi-trauma injuries and was quickly taken to the Nelson Hospital emergency department in the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

.CO.NZ 100 whales found beached at Farewell Spit this morning: Another hundred whales were found beached on Farewell Spit on Saturday morning. It is not yet clear whether the pilot whales were part of the pod of 400 that beached overnight on Thursday in the third-largest recorded stranding in New Zealand since the 1800s. When the 400 whales were discovered early Friday morning, some 250 to 300 whales were already dead, sparking claims DOC should have acted sooner. Takaka DOC operations manager Andrew Lamason believes that the refloated survivors on Friday swam in the wrong direction and headed back into the bay. “If you were going to design a geographical trap for whales, Golden Bay is pretty much perfect,” he says.
Project Jonah, DOC and community volunteers have been working around the clock to save a pod of pilot whales following one of New Zealand’s largest-ever strandings.
