Nelson's fishing fleet to be blessed with fireworks

Fireworks will take to the sky and fishing boats will take to the sea, at this weekend’s Blessing of the Fishing Fleet. This is the 16th year the blessing has been held following the tragic loss of over 20 fishermen to the ocean in 1996. On Friday night, fireworks will stream across the sky from 6.30pm, with viewing from the waterfront and the port hills. The Motueka Brass Band will playing on Saturday from noon at the Seafarers’ Memorial, while the fishing boats line up along Wakefield Quay. The blessing ceremony and procession will begin at 12.30pm. Seafarers’ Memorial Trust spokesman Mike Smith says it’s an event that has won a place on the Nelson calendar and in people’s hearts.
