2014 Annual Report

WELCOME

Welcome Thank you! For 20 years members of the tree fruit industry have guided, directed and made possible the work of the Washington Apple Education Foundation. Your efforts have resulted in changed lives and positive impacts that will last for generations.

| 2014 Annual Report

As WAEF has grown over these 20 years, the industry’s direction to impact the families and communities where tree fruit is grown has remained consistent. Input from donors has helped guide that work to focus on access to higher education, degree achievement and recently, career preparation. Your influence through WAEF now extends to activities undertaken to help the talented young people receiving WAEF awards make a plan for the future, a future that includes a college education. For many of our students, they are the first in their families to achieve that milestone. Your input, financial contributions and volunteer hours make this possible. Thank you for choosing to make a difference through WAEF! Jeff Fagg, Chairman

Beyond the Scholarship Beyond the Scholarship

Throughout the year students took part in networking and informational events designed to encourage degree completion and career preparation. Below are a few excerpts from students and volunteers about their experiences. “Meeting with Ms. Woods also instilled within me that I am on the right track for my career. She highlighted the importance of being flexible and comfortable with a variety of writing styles to connect to different audiences. She also noted the need to be able to bridge the gap between producers and researchers and the public, to best explain conventional farming practices in a way most people can understand. My major, Agricultural Communications, Science, and Leadership, is built around that very philosophy.” - Maggie Elliot following visit with Kate Woods of the Northwest Horticultural Council.

| 2014 Annual Report

“Thank you for taking your time to set up the meeting with Kelly. It was very nice to see her again and get more information about public accounting. She was very nice to me and answered all of my questions. She explained the difference between private and public accounting and gave me some advice as to what classes I should take. I learned more things about the field I am going in to.” - Nancy Leyva following visit with Kelly Boreson of Homchick, Smith & Associates. Nancy spent the summer as an intern in Stemilt Growers’ accounting department. “It was a good experience and an opportunity to look at broader options for lab work outside of medicine. Not only did I get a tour of what the lab does, I also got like a glimpse into the business side of the company. Which was a surprise to be honest. I thought I was just going to ask questions about the lab and what their experiments were about (and I did) but I also ended up asking business questions as well.

Mariano Perez (left) with Emily Bautista-Herdt and Luke Tiffany of AgroFresh

8

I think I surprised the lab manager when I suggested an experiment they had been wanting to try out.” - Mariano Perez following visit with AgroFresh.

Teams of volunteers prepared Care Packages sent to students on campus wishing them good luck on the school year and finals. Shown is the team from RaboBank.

Participants in the Career Tour

“I really enjoyed Kershaw and seeing the other side of the industry some of us have been oblivious to. I enjoyed seeing how the company runs. I also really enjoyed that the tour was informal and we could ask questions! I was glad with the choice of companies as well and how they were all different sizes.” - Madia Martinez following the Career Tour in Yakima.

Beyond the Scholarship

I woke up this morning to a care package sitting on my desk and what a wonderful surprise it was! Thank you so much WAEF and Chelan Fresh Marketing for starting my day off with a smile! - Lilianna Ramos

Guadalupe Rangel Gutierrez meets with WAEF volunteer Ben Jensen to discuss the accounting field.

2014 Annual Report

“Working with WAEF students is an inspiring experience. Following my visit with Guadalupe I knew I had made a difference. Guadalupe is a talented, driven young person but she needed some directional help to make the most of her scholarship and align her education with the future she wanted for herself and her family. Using my background, I could share about careers in her field of interest and the impact of CPA credentials. Having this conversation now allowed Guadalupe to make adjustments in her degree plan to meet her career goals.” - Ben Jensen, CPA, CliftonLarsonAllen

Scholarship Training

2014-2015 School Year

Scholarship Training

The WAEF scholarship training curriculum was developed utilizing insights from our scholarship selection committee members. Through it, students learn how to research scholarships, successfully apply and stand out in the selection process.

Student Survey Responses to the prompt

“What were the most beneficial tips you received today about applying for scholarships?” 1. Meet all the deadlines and an applicant must stand out within their application. Also, make sure you fulfill all the requirements before completing an application

| 2014 Annual Report

2. To proofread my essays, personal statements, and application before I submit it and to give the individual writing your letter of recommendation enough time. 3. When writing a personal statement, don’t write what you think the reader wants to read. Instead, write in a way that will show them who you are so the reader can better understand you. 4. To ask my parents if their employer offers any scholarships and to use the questions they ask me to my advantage. 5. Things I should avoid when applying to scholarships. Using a non-professional email is an example. 6. How crucial and vital it is to start early when applying for scholarships. 7. How applying for scholarships is similar to applying for a job. You need letters of recommendation, resume, and a well written essay. This presentation got me into scholarships, and I’ll start applying now.

~ Loved the videos and the one at the end featuring local businesses outlining jobs in the fruit business.

|

~ Our presenter Jose Hernandez did a great job. Our students were quiet and engaged the entire presentation. Jose did a great job of tying his life story to the students and relating. I feel like he helped turn the switch to a couple of the light bulbs going off in students’ minds. He spoke clearly and was engaging. The information was up front and easy to understand.

WAEF Volunteers and Leadership | 2014 Annual Report 16

WAEF Volunt rs and Leadership Over 115 volunteers dedicated time and talent to helping WAEF students succeed this year! The Washington Apple Education Foundation is led by a volunteer board of directors. Jeff Fagg served as chairman of the board from May 2014 – April 2015. Mr. Fagg was elected to the board of directors in the summer of 2011. He was quickly tapped to serve an officer role and begin the process of rotating through the chairs of the role of chairman. Outside of his time on the board of directors, Mr. Fagg is employed by Northwest Farm Credit Services as a vice-president in their agri-business division. He began his career with the lender in 1995 and built strong relationships with many of the larger fruit operations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Utilizing his strengths in finance and business, Mr. Fagg serves on the investment, audit and strategic planning committees of WAEF. He is also a member of our scholarship selection committee. Like many Jeff Fagg greets guests at the summer others, he found this role opened his eyes to the needs of young scholarship luncheon. people and he developed a greater respect for the aspirations of students entering college as the first in their family history to achieve such a milestone. “"I initially joined WAEF to give back to an industry that has treated me well. Now after four years I serve to continue to help the amazing students and families we touch,” Mr. Fagg shared at the 2014 annual meeting. Recently Northwest Farm Credit Services recognized Jeff with their Make A Difference Award. It honored his time and impact with the Washington Apple Education Foundation and his efforts to engage others in the bank with the foundation.

Rabo AgriFinance team members Ben Cox, Mallory Shindler and Greg Loudon accepted the award on behalf of many members in their operation that volunteered with WAEF this year.

2014 Volunteer of the Year - Leo & Pat Sax Mr. & Mrs. Sax are active members of the Wenatchee community. Professionally, Mr. Sax was the secretary/manager of the Washington Growers Clearing House until the mid-1990s. Mrs. Sax was a nutritionist at Central Washington Hospital. Leo was an early board member of WAEF and currently serves as a counselor and member of the WAEF Investment Committee. Pat was one of the first members of the foundation's nutrition education committee, a golf tournament volunteer for many years, Tree Fruit Treasures cookbook committee member and served on the WAEF scholarship selection committee.
